Booms the scout as the unseeing Kalkamedes approaches him and at the last moment stops held back by the anchor that is Sleeping Sword.

At the sound of Kala's voice shouting his name, Stinky perks up from where he was snuffing and rolling about in the shrubbery. Bounding up to her like a puppy, he stares up into her face with adoring eyes. Kala! Guess what I found! You'll never guess! It was glorious! It smelled so vibrant! I just had to roll in it! Can we go back there? Huh? Can we?

Of course, he knows that Kala can't read his mind, but maybe someday she'll learn.

Assuming Lynn does heal Kalkamedes on the fly (and we'll let her roll that)....

An hour later, (an hour and a half after you left the cabin) after trudging through a lot of untracked wilderness, a wilderness of rolling hills, steep inclines and apparently some sort of musk left by a skunk with a gastrointestinal ailment that seems to dog the party's steps like bad karma, there is a break in the trees and Almaas and Rhinshin step out into a field of tall grass. There's more black forest ahead of them but from here at least they can look up into the twinkling firmament of the sky above and pick out the clusters of stars that make some of the constellations of the Cosmic Caravan. It has the effect of making them both seem a bit smaller.

The clearing rolls on into a little vale where the grass gives way to weeds.

The terrain here grows difficult amid the weeds.

They press on when--

Almaas: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 1) + 2 = 7
Rhinshin: 2d4 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (4, 4) + 2 - 4 = 6

Both dwarf and rodent feel sudden raking pain run through their hands and legs and hear the tearing of cloth. They look down and find that their pants are torn and brambles in the weeds--like a host of hidden sea urchins have scored their legs so badly that it looks to them both like someone had taken a nine-tailed scourge to them.

Kalkamede's snore grows closer, and closer....

Amaas is that mage armor on your tag line real or a legacy from his last game?

Kala: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

Angela, Kala:
It's a big patch of razor bramble! Razor bramble counts as difficult terrain and inflicts 2d4+2 hp of damage each round someone moves though it. The damage is reduced by 1 for each point of armor, natural armor or deflection bonus.

Almaas's vision cannot see the end of the patch of weeds ahead. It just melts into the darkness. So he steps back out of the chest-high (for a dwarf) sea of terminally thorny weeds scraping another layer of skin off his torso and legs, and endangering his err, modesty.

That's basically a 5 foot-step backwards, so there's more you can do if you like.

Maybe Almaas and Rhinshin should split up so we can see which direction gives us the closest path around it." Shouting so the scouters can hear, she repeats herself: "Hey Almaas and Rhinshin! Almaas shakes his head sadly, and in reasonable tones explains the concepts of "bad luck" and "acceptable losses."

Rhinshinbot chooses to delay, feeling quite content not to move very much as the razor sharp bramble barbs encompass him up to his neck. In fact he doesn't even breath very much when he can help it. He just sort of stands there motionless making little gurgling noises.

Lemme know if anyone wants to do anything about that. That scene happens about an hour before the appearance of the razor brambles.

That should probably happen before this current encounter with the thorns, unless you want to allow him to walk wounded for an hour first (as it doesn't seem to slow him down).

Kala would've gladly dog piled him. Since he was glowing from her light spell it would've been easy to see what was ailing him. Also, she has been refreshing the light spell each time it times out.

I'll take that as a second "Yes, I would like all of our characters to tackle him and then give him a good once over for stones in his boots and what have you."

If they do, working together, the party can (apparently with a lot of time) just pile on him. After Kalkamedes is immobilized, his boot removed, and he is thoroughly checked out, Sleeping Sword finds that one of his ankles is badly sprained. Lynn had healed him up to within 1 point of what was necessary to take care of the sprain and then over the course of 10 minutes of walking on it he re-aggravated it again. Were he allowed to continue walking on it he would not have made it to the briar patch without falling unconscious (well, more unconscious). So he has a very bad sprain (again).

Sprains can be treated in non-magical ways (i.e. with a splint--which would require an heal check while he is pinned), or can be healed via cure spells, or some combination of both could be used.

Also while he is pinned you could take the rope off his leg and tie it elsewhere if you like, though with it on his leg he is easier to trip.

Upon discovering Kalkamedes's sprained ankle, Kala fashions a splint for him and wraps it tightly with a strip of cloth torn from his pajamas. She then shoves his boot back onto his foot over the splint. (She tried to be gentle, but he wouldn't hold still.)

That will prevent him from further injuring (i.e. taking more damage from) an already bad sprain.

Noted but all of that takes time.

An hour later, as the party is passing though some hilly country made marshy by recent rains Kalkamedes makes a sudden hard left and head west into what looks like sodden ground the center of which is completely submerged to an unknown depth.

Rhinshin turns around and sees Kalkamedes take a sharp turn to the water. He immediately turns back and heads to assist the others.

Sounds like a plan to me. That way he will not drown. Unless of course he tries to swim with his mouth open underwater.
