I don't have a clear picture yet of to what degree the Fox is restrained, or his condition (if you want to give me a slew of conditions like exhausted, sickened, etc. I think it would be plenty appropriate). I'd also be curious to know when I might become aware of the party's actions. I don't think that time is now--I figured I would hear the dragon because it is so loud, but I'm not likely to hear anything else for now.

Anyway, just let me know when there is something I could respond to. =) And I think it would be good to lay out conditions, etc. in case it comes to a point that it makes sense for the Fox to try to struggle against the jorogumo. For now, he feels hopeless and is not bothering to try that.

16 year old Abe no Toshiro reporting, full of vim and the righteous fury against unfairness only a teenager can really bring to bear.

Sheet

Backstory:

Toshiro was born under auspicious signs declaring him to be he eventual successor of his revered ancestor Abe no Seimei's legacy as a great magician. Almost as soon as he could talk, his training began, his masters teaching him the way to communicate with kami, beseeching them for aid or warding off evil. He grew up believing a close relationship with the spirits of all things was as natural as the relationships you or I form with other human beings or animals (depending on their relative intelligence).

His upbringing left him gifted and educated in many magical rituals and traditions, it also left him isolated from much of humanity, and spoiled nearly completely rotten; he never wanted for a thing and needed but ask for a something to be done or brought and it would be so. It became as natural as commanding spirits to command people, and expect unthinking obedience in all things and as he grew to early adolescence his family and teachers realized their mistake, as Toshiro had grown arrogant and entitled beyond all reason.

So he was subjected to a severe change in lifestyle, forced to live among the common folk and live a simpler life for a time. At first he resented this, and lashed out at the "injustice", but after a time came to appreciate that the reduction in luxury led to a much needed increase in FREEDOM; the ability to wander and make friends away form the watchful eyes of his protective and overbearing family, whose expectations he had not even consciously realized were weighing heavily on him.

So it was that by the time he was a young man, he realized the true injustices his people suffered under the yoke of their shogun, Yoshinori. Raised to power only a few years after Toshiro was born, his rule had been marked by capricious and cruel dictatorship, that his people bore as best they could.

Seeking to save his people from their own government, Toshiro was in the process of gathering support among the common people and other sin power to oppose the shogun, banking on his name, reputation, and ability to perform miracles to sway them to his side on a grand pilgrimage from the small village he had been moved to, back to the Seimei Shrine in Kyoto.

He had gathered what he believed to be sizable support, and assured he was on his way to fulfilling his destiny by freeing his people form the yoke of unjust rule for what could be more disastrous than a government that did not serve its people)...when the meteor struck.

In the weeks hence he has moved among the people, treating their wounds, laying spirits to rest, and slaying predatory yokai, aghast at the sudden and unprecedented destruction laid on the people of Japan. His original goal almost seems petty now...but with the Shogun's men keeping up their brutal and unfair treatment even amidst the devastation, he steeled himself to end the problem once and for all.

He would storm the Shogun's palace and end this with his own hands.

I worked it in in such a way that he could be introduced mid combat if that's all right, but if not there's any number of reasons he'd be late arriving from across town or something.

Considering how much damage the underworld imperial dragon just dealt to Johann in round 2, I'd say right now is a great time for young Abe no Toshiro to join the fight! :0

Abe no Toshiro is 60 ft behind the party when the dragon comes to the doorway and attacks... Will DC 20 vs frightful presence... Hopefully, he saves and can get up there and save Johann from becoming the door dragon's next snack!

After awarding 6,000 milestone bonus XP to the party for exceeding 6,000 gameplay posts on all three tables combined, each PC has a current total of 57,185 XP...

Adding up XP for the 12 spirit oni and ogre mage...

Sharing with PusInBoots, that's 1,500 XP more per PC, so total XP per character is 58,685!

Bahaha I can see this as a movie scene, now--the camera is looking straight down a wide hallway with no one in it. At the far end, on the left side, you see a door open and the Fox dashes out and starts running down the hallway toward the camera. A couple seconds later, this huge spider woman crashes through the same doorway, skidding across the floor and then bouncing a little off of the wall on the right before beginning to run toward the camera, herself, in pursuit of the Fox...

Fascinate is a gray area and needs GM discretion. I can see an easy interpretation that a fascination could happen in battle and not break if the fascinated person is not threatened.

There's a little bit of one, but once open combat breaks out it seems pretty clear Fascinate is not meant to work.

The only gray area I see here (though MJ may disagree) is that the cloud is opaque, so it could be argued that the ninja INSIDE the cloud can't actually see any of the threatening things going on, so the Fascination isn't broken.

Well this is the part you are probably referring to: Any obvious threat, such as someone drawing a weapon, casting a spell, or aiming a ranged weapon at the fascinated creature, automatically breaks the effect.

I read this as the spell, weapon drawn, or ranged weapon must be directed at the fascinated creature. (It doesn't say "near", it says "at")

My interpretation means nothing in the context of this game because it is MJ's game, but if you have developer quotes or FAQ or other source material on the subject I would love to see it because it certainly comes up in all games.

M Human unchained monk 8/paladin 6

Because these ninja aren't substantial threats to your party (there are only 6 of them against 8 of you, and they are only CR 5), I'm thinking of having them flee to speed things up any way, but yeah, the fascination question is... fascinating lol... I'd be curious to see how an official game designer would rule it... I will say that the ninja are intoxicated by the euphoric cloud, but not fascinated, as they were already in combat with the party when the spell was cast. That said, your obvious superior prowess and the spirit oni's warning will cause them to flee, I think, so effective nonethess...

I dunno if it means nothing; MJ of course has the ultimate say, but he's always been a benevolent dictator. ;)

Anyhow, I can't find any dev quotes and there's no FAQ (which is somewhat odd, it seems a pretty simple FAQ candidate); the closest thing I could dig up is this thread, which has a post by ROgue Eidolon in it...before he was actually employed by Paizo, so it counts even less than forum posts from devs usually do (since many get contradicted by later FAQS anyway).

Regardless, the point is moot; I mostly went digging to sate my own curiosity, and came up empty.

Happy New Year, everyone! Be safe tonight. I'm staying in and designing adventures lol... Speaking of which, after you (hopefully) rescue Fox and complete The Ghost Tower of Flower Palace, I am guessing you will try to find your way back to Rome to continue the hunt for Nero Antichrist in The Roman Catacombs?

Assuming the answer is yes, that should occupy the party for a good while yet (I think you were on level 4 of 6?)... On completing that adventure, you should be somewhere between 11th and 13th level, I believe. I won't give away any spoilers, but let's just say that won't be the end of your conflict against the Church of Lucifer, even if you manage to defeat the Antichrist in his lair...

On 14th February, there will supposedly be an attack on Rome by the ancient red dragon Wormwood, a foe beyond any party of even 13th level Pcs, which I don't think you will quite be even after completing the Roman Catacombs... In fact, it might be wise to do some other adventuring before attempting to face the Antichrist in his lair...

What kinds of adventures would you all like to go on afterward, when you are around 12th level or higher, or even before to bolster your strength before returning to the Roman Catacombs?

I know Mwikali mentioned interest in returning to Africa for some adventures against the Ottoman Empire, which could definitely be fun...

Or even bring the fight home to the front in Eastern Europe, assisting Prince Vlad II Dracul in defending Christendom in Wallachia...

Or return to The Lost City of Atlantis to finish exploring and plundering the ancient treasures and magic of that prehistoric realm...

Or an expedition to the uncharted Skull Island to contend with savages, dinosaurs, and giant beasts, hopefully avoiding or befriending the islanders' colossal demigod, King Kong (and bring the colossal ape to the New World to fight Gojira and his kaiju pals!)...

Or perhaps a crazy visit to Johann's beloved Black Forest, and the demiplane of Gooseland within, where you might use your rare jar of sovereign glue to help all the Wall-King's horses and men put broken intelligent, egg-shaped crystal golem Humpty Dumpty back together again...

M Human unchained monk 8/paladin 6

Ideas for future adventures:

In Africa:
Quest for the Mask of Cleopatra:
The Sultan Murad II has sent an expedition of Turkish adventurers to the Ruins of Great Zimbabwe in Africa to search for a potent relic--the Mask of Cleopatra (as a headband of alluring charisma +6 and eyes of charming, eyes slot). Prince Henry of Portugal hires the PCs to beat the Turks to the prize, but the Ruins of Great Zimbabwe hold darker terrors than enemy Turks...

The Lost Mines of King Solomon:
Sir Landry, now the de facto Emir of Marrakech after Zagathoth's untimely death in Japan, finally agrees to reveal what he knows about the Lost Mines of King Solomon, in spite of the horrors that he encountered (and alone survived) during the Knights Templar's failed expedition there to. He provides the PCs with a map to the Lost Mines, which apparently lie within an unknown land called Kukuanaland, north of the Kalukawe River, inhabited by fierce cannibals ruled by a King Twala and his chief advisor, an impossibly ancient night hag named Gagool...

The Mines sound neat, I've always liked King Solomon and occult tales relating to him.

Some extraplanar adventures could also be cool, since at that point we'll be at a level where Plane Shift and such comes online.

M Human unchained monk 8/paladin 6

Ideas for future adventures, cont.:

Campaign Arc: Quest for the Mirror of the Multiverse, a 4-adventure arc:

The Black Abbey of Kilkenny: Some of Habiba's past lives seem to be bound in some karmic way to the Mirror. She recalls two such past lives, one as a Blackfriar monk of the Black Abbey in Kilkenny, Ireland. The Blackfriars have been charged with keeping a fragment of the Mirror secret and hidden in a safe place. Can the PCs convince these puissant warrior-monks to give it up? Probably not without a fight...

The Great Pyramid of Cheops: Habiba also recalls a long-ago life as an ill-fated priestess of Isis, entombed with King Cheops--and a fragment of the Mirror--beneath the Great Pyramid. Do the PCs dare to enter the Tomb of Cheops within the Great Pyramid, said to be guarded by terrible undead spirits and ancient curses?

The Temple of the Moon: Finding two more fragments of the Mirror of the Multiverse makes it possible to track down the remaining two fragments with powerful divination magic, which NPC allies can help the party with. One fragment lies within the sacred treasury if the Temple of the Moon in Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec Empire in the New World!

The Tower of Babel: Powerful divination magic reveals that the final fragment of the Mirror lies within the topmost chamber of the mythical Tower of Babel, at the heart of the Ruins of Babylon, near the Arabian city of Bagdad. The Ruins of Babylon are known to be haunted by desert spirits, djinn, and divs...

Ideas for future adventures, cont.:

Extraplanar Adventures:

The Demiplane of Gooseland:
Within Johann's homeland, The Black Forest, lies a portal to Gooseland, a fairy dimension akin to Avalon, Alfheim, Tir Na Nog, etc., but smaller in scope (more on the scale of Wonderland, the Land Beyond the Looking Glass). Here can be found the Kingdom of the Wall (where Humpty Dumpty had a great fall off said wall...); the Sea of Mermaids (ruled by King Neptune, an avatar of the greater god Poseidon, and his mermaid daughters, youngest of which is Princess Ariel, the Little Mermaid); the Dark Wood, inhabited by a pack of powerful and cunning werewolves led by the Big Bad Wolf, and by a family of wereboars, and Three Little Pigs (wereboars), and by Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother, and by a nosey burglar named Goldilocks; the Big Shoe, home of a hag named the Old Lady of the Shoe, and her many "children"; and other fun NPCs...

The Inferno:
The PCs could take the fight against Lucifer to the Arch-Fiend by plane shifting or entering one of the known gateways into the Nine Hells... Careful hit-and-run missions to assassinate greater devils, or to rescue captives that do not belong in Hell...

I'm glad that some of you have been faithful players from the very beginning back in April of last year. We are in our 10th month for this campaign, and though we have lost a number of great players and their characters, we still have Critzible, Mustachioed, Johnny Panic, and Keante from the original tables. Storm Dragon is a veteran from a couple past campaigns set in my Fairytale Earth, and I'm glad to have him back! CA Jademan, thank you for bringing Algoral to the table, you are in great company, and all of you are in a position to enjoy a fun fantasy story and alternate history that we will create together!

The next year should be a world and plane spanning epic worthy of being retold in novel, graphic novel and film form. In effect, I hope that these myths and legends we are creating together will entertain others in the future. Big goals and big dreams are my thing! Lol... I have two screenplay writer friends in LA, one who wrote and directed Waiting and the more recent comedy Tag, the other wrote Dark Summer and Patient Z. Who knows?

M Human unchained monk 8/paladin 6

If my breakneck pacing of this PbP is ever too much for any of you, for whatever reason, during whatever time in your RL it occurs, I'd rather have you take a break and return like Keante, rather than leave for good.

Or instead of daily posting, if you can only post once in a week, I'm sure accommodate that via bot at this point. I would relax my posting requirements for veterans, of course! ;)
