The tiger seems vaguely familiar. I think we might have met him when the Crusaders of the Catacombs teleported to Marrakesh and defeated the Emir. Maybe saw him mentioned in the summary of how we were leaving things as we moved on to the next place. But that was before Alphonse joined; maybe even before Abe no Toshiro? I think it was the Desert Jackals who really knew him.
correct.

so we should be leveling up, yah? I'll try to get it done this weekend.
I am getting bat form, so that is very fun, and also a lot of work because now I'll need to adjust 4 alias.
The Ogon Fox |
Johann: the Bear-Snake-Batman.
I will be taking my 7th level of unchained monk, which means my unarmed attacks are now treated as cold iron and silver. As my 11th level in full BAB classes, I will also be getting that wonderful 3rd iterative attack.
I need to pick a feat. I could do Elemental Fist, Spring Attack...or maybe Weapon Finesse in anticipation of my Dexterity improving soon. Currently I have 14 Strength and 15 Dexterity (and 16 Wisdom), so I'm planning to put my 12th level ability increase in Dexterity, at which point Weapon Finesse will amount to a +1 on attack rolls (more if I get a stat-boosting item on Dex).

foxy, speaking of feats don't forget to use this if you take damage:
Teamwork feat with Foxy:Ally Shield : Whenever you are the target of a melee or ranged attack and are adjacent to an ally who also has this feat, you can initiate this feat to skillfully pull the abettor into harm’s way or dodge behind the abettor as an immediate action.
You gain cover against that attack (and only that attack). If the attack misses you but would have hit you if not for the cover bonus to your armor class, the abettor becomes the target of the attack and the attacker must make a new attack roll (with all the same modifiers) against the abettor’s armor class.
Ihrin Ardlean Dracul |
Ihrin is going into one level of Samurai Warrior Poet, then Unchained Rogue then Fighter of some kind
Johann Kaltgeboren- Dire Bat! |
leveled!
Dire bat isn't as strong in combat as bear or snake, but is a good utility form with fly 60, darkvision 90, & blindsense 20!
also I took vital strike. Snake usually has a 3d6 bite. 2d6 is base and then improved bite to go up to 3d6. When I vital strike, do you think the damage is 5d6 or 6d6?
still looking for a better pic

Good question about damage. The conservative side of me says 5d6 out of the horror of thinking of the carnage if I ruled 6d6, and then you take improved and greater Vital Strike lol...
But I can't help wonder if RAW is in fact 6d6, then 9d6, then 12d6 plus modifiers... That sounds so sickly OP though lol...
What do the rest of you think? I mean, even the conservative ruling is going to be a buttload of damage die, like only a difference of 3 I think?
Storm Dragon |
It's 6d6; Improved Natural Attack increases the damage die, which definitely by RAW stacks with Vital Strike.
This is not as strong as it sounds. Remember you can only use Vital Strike once per round and it stacks with absolutely nothing. Can't use it on an AoO, or with Cleave, or anything like that.
In snake form he's doing 6d6+12, an average of 33 damage, or 39 with Power Attack. That is...not really very much in the grand scheme (in the sense of being OP; it's great damage for a single attack). Alphonse does 2d4+18 (average 23) and can sling out 3 of those per round, and he is not an optimized damage dealer by any means.
3d6 damage die attacks is actually the "break even" point for Vital Strike to be kind of okay compared to simply full attacking or taking a Feat like Furious Focus.
Compare/Contrast a hypothetical optimized Barbarian with the same 22 base Str as Johann. Greater Rage at this level ups that by 6, for a +9 damage from Str, 1.5x for a 2H weapon to +13. Power Attack adds -3/+9 for a +18, followed by a +2 Furious weapon for +22. 2d6+22 is an average of 29 damage (4-10 points lower than the Vital Strike), but the Barbarian can also Charge-Pounce and potentially do it 3 times per round, plus a bite (and two claws if your GM allows extreme cheese weapon swapping which is technically RAW but no table runs it that way) for something like 1d4+12-ish.
TL;DR: Allowing the RAW for Vital Strike isn't going to bust anything.
Johann Kaltgeboren- Cobra! |
I suppose combat reflexes with reach is more op than my vital strike. As a GM, nothing bums me out more than that combo. Reach is the worst and everyone does it!

Sorry for the delay, leveling done:
New feat: Fearless Aura. Everyone within 20 feet of Alphonse is immune to Fear.
New ability: Powerful Justice. Expend a Smite to give everyone my Smite damage bonus (not attack rolls, AC, or DR penetrating).
Prepared spells:
1st: Hero's Defiance, Bed of Iron, Veil of Positive Energy, Weapons Against Evil
2nd: Litany of Righteousness (2)
3rd: Fire of Judgement, Resist Energy (Communal)
@MJ: Since Alphonse is now the primary healer, may I retrain one of my mercies to better reflect that? I just want to get rid of Nauseated in favor of Injured.

BTW, congratulations! At 11th level, your PCs are the highest level PCs in this era (15th century) of my Fairytale Earth campaign. The Lusty Fools (of which Alphonse was part) made it to 10th level before that campaign fizzled out, and the Fierce Ones (20th level, mythic rank 10) won't be around for another six centuries!

whoaaaaaaaaa! MJ you really want to turn up my power level to 11. I appreciate the unslotted beads. You better turn up the heat now!
Michael Johnson 66 |
I will try to draw up a top down battle map of the bottom of KSM by the end of this week. It's a vast mega cavern where the spiral stairs fork into two giant stairways that form a central chamber (N) flanked by a west wing (L, M) and an eastern wing (O, P), where the treasures of King Solomon are guarded by the mightiest of guardians...
Michael Johnson 66 |
I have grand ideas about a diorama made of spraypainted cardboard boxes and styrofoam for the bottom tier, which would be badass, so I'm gonna do it as soon as I'm not crazy busy with the season, but I don't want to hold up the game for it, so I will try to describe as well as I can the dynamic nature of the battlefields, which are full of obstacles like stalagmites, columns, formations and stairways...

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Happy New Year, my friends! I wish an awesome, productive joyful 2020 and beyond to all of us.
I'd like to express my genuine deep gratitude to each of you for staying at my table for as long as you all have, and consistently contributing to what has become one of my most favorite campaigns I have run in my 37 years of DMing!
I know all of you have full and often hectic lives in RL, so I really appreciate that you've stuck with me and I hope we all stay in for the long haul. Even though I've been DMimg almost 4 decades, this group has shown me that I can still improve and sometimes make mistakes. Thanks for staying in despite my occasional heavy hamfisted railroads and Mary Sue NPCs! LOL! As you can tell, I'm enamoured with this setting and our story, and I promise to keep providing my best as long as you are all into it!
Sköl!

I just remembered I have the corset of dire witchcraft! that encreases my Hex DC by +2

You run a fun and unpredictable game! Thanks for all of your efforts MJ.

So! Level 12 and the conclusion of a big mid level adventure arc: The Lost Mines of King Solomon! Well done, Champions!
To let you in on my ideas for the next leg of this journey:
The heroes now have a considerable surplus of treasure for their level, I believe, so for game balance purposes, I will likely dole out very little in the way of monetary rewards for the next couple levels, and let you grow into your new high powered gear.
Your PCs no doubt have goals and ideas for how to spend this great wealth in fighting against the evils that plague their world.
Sir Alphonse has (as the devious Fates have decreed) found the deed to Leeds Castle and has been appointed by divine messenger to found a new holy order of knights to fight against the Luciferians. A lot of excess treasure could easily go toward repairing the ruined castle and fortifying it further, as well as equipping recruits.
We will move forward in the timeline to the winter of 1437, when the adventurers have returned to Anfa, found things to be as Shaka the tiger described them--The Portugese Prince Henry picking up where the conquered Arab Slave Trade left off...
Are we interested in some RP and tactical play dealing with the Portuguese slave trade in Morroco? Or shall I montage it (with your posts to provide flavor and player agency, of course).
The situation in Morroco is this:
Prince Henry of Portugal has captured Anfa, Sir Landry is Emir of Marrakesh, nominally supporting the crusade against the Arabs, but not pleased with the way the Portuguese have merely taken over the Arab Slave Trade rather than quell it.
We can have the PCs lead the forces of Marrakesh in a rebellion against the Portuguese and break up the Slave Trade in North Africa for good, or they can return at once to Rome to continue hounding the Antichrist Nero in his treacherous labyrinth of catacombs beneath the Eternal City.
What is the party's will?
