Minkers's Untitled Campaign

Game Master Minkers

51 to 100 of 116 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

My previous post was lost to the great website crash of Jan '14, here's hoping that this one stays put!

Morythine's character sheet is about 95% finished. I've added traits and completed the backstory, which I've summarised so as to save those interested a rather lengthy read. The only major question left outstanding regard starting gold; Morythine's been built with average gold . . . if we receive maximum than I've got more to spend. I also want to check my history lines up with Galt's chronology, if it doesn't I might make some small tweaks to the history.

I’ll probably multi-class Morythine as a cleric of Zon-Kuthon as the campaign progresses. Mechanically this will give him some access to negative channelling (and the ability to heal), and Zon-Kuthon’s portfolio has echoes in Morythine’s own darker leanings.

However, I intend to play him as a strictly neutral character. Whilst on paper he doesn’t seem like much of a team player, nor a particularly good fit for a party of heroes, roleplaying wise I want to make his personal development from a clinical, distant character to one that actually connects with, trusts and cares for the other PCs part of the campaign’s story.

added more background in profile putting the finishing touches on the stat block.

Questions and answers:
-Who are you: (A seemingly straightforward question. What is left when you take away your characters abilities, past and future actions? What is the core concept of this person?)

Poorly phrased, I think, since your past decisions and actions are not JUST the product of your prior experiences, but they are also part of the set of prior experiences which shape you as you move past them. But I think I understand what you're after.

Gudada is, at heart, still a frightened little boy who just wants to play. His abusive father prevented a carefree childhood. His time in the streets of Sandpoint as part of the village's only internal gang of Varisian urchins is as close to a carefree childhood as he got. It ended VERY abruptly with the lifting of the murder weapons and the urchins fleeing to the corners of Varisia. 'Dada found himself forced to be a man in a man's world, with no time left for being childish.

The position he found in the caravan required a cheerful face, so he has a cheerful face regardless of how he feels. The position allows him to clown, so he gets to be a buffoon, but it is required behavior and can feel empty and formal far too easily. His father left 'Dada with an amazing fear of violence that time on the road, helping protect the caravan, has tempered, but that adjustment keeps him very serious about the risks and dangers of combat to those around him.

-What inspired/forced/motivated you to take on the life of an adventurer?

Nothing, yet. 'Dada has been part of a Varisian caravan, and his skills reflect his role within the caravan. He is a distraction, a pick-pocket, an occasional burglar (if the pickings seem good enough to Papa (the caravan-master & family's father) for the risk as the caravan leaves town to be acceptable) and a part of the caravan's defense team on the roads.

-What is your biggest weakness? (Think personal character flaws)

Dependence. His cultural background has built a deep need for a support structure (that he thinks of as family regardless of structure or relations) into his personality. His attachment won't form as quickly as his cooperation, but once the attachment forms he readily accepts tasks, assignments and risks form that structure that he wouldn't choose to perform on his own, in order to earn and maintain his position within the family.

-What is your biggest strength? (What seperates your character from another character with the exact same statblock.. in a positive way.)

Adaptability. Some things are pretty simple. If a guy tries to stick you with a sword, you try to keep that from happening. If you want to get into somebody's home, though, there can be an amazing variety of things to try. Wealthy enough for servants and deliveries? Have a child of age for a quick tryst? Travelling missionaries here to deliver the message of Desna? Traditional B&E?

Sadly, as a PC, his adaptability is limited by my ability to think outside of the box. I try.

-What is the most enjoyable thing you remember doing?

Cuddling with his mother, Nadya. That's not to say Gudada is a virgin, it is intended to point out his most warm, most comforting memory.

-What is the most significant thing you remember doing?

Transitioning. Until very recently, the most significant thing Gudada had individually done was lift the still bloody murder weapons early in "The Recent Unpleasantness". As he starts the story still in mourning for his mother, after being her sole care provider for the final weeks, burying her looms large over everything in his history.

-What do you fear?

Becoming his father, Djordi. An unhappy man trapped into work he came to despise, taking his anger and frustration out on his wife and children while managing to present a face to the public that he was who and where he wanted to be. Gudada is unconsciously aware of the fact that he does the last bit of that constantly already, though he denies it to himself.

-How do you want to be remembered?

As a loving old uncle in one of the Varisian extended families. He doesn't see himself taking on the role of Papa (leader), but he wants to find a niche where he can fit and encourage others to grow and become more than they would without the extended family.

-What is the line that you won't cross?

Intentionally hurting children and helpless (or hopeless) women. Crossing that line wil make it very hard to even pretend that he is not like Djordi.

-What do you see as future goals? Both long and short term.

REALLY short term? Find a new family. This drive is very strong, and he completely hides the strength of this drive from himself. The goal is a good one, but the reason for the urgency is questionable at best.

Shortish Term? Get past his mother's death.

Long Term? Build a family within an extended family. Establish and create a permanent place for himself where he knows that he fits and belongs. Hopefully one where he can do things he enjoys and not the things that are expected of him.

-What path do you want your character to take (Answer this as a player, what kind of growth would you like to see in your characters and what kind of trials would you like to see him overcome. How would you like your character to 'end up' at the end of the campaign? Take note that this doesn't need to be in line with your characters goals. They may even contradict. These are your goals!)

I want him to lose his fear that he is secretly a monster waiting to happen.

I want him to learn to relax and truly play instead of perform and banter.

I want him to learn that danger, risks and pain are his by choice, not because he deserves them. And then have him choose to continue to accept the danger, risks and pain in order to protect others.

I want him to gain the self-confidence required to become Papa. But I have no idea if he will ever actually return to the lifestyle where he would have a chance to do so.

I want him to be heroic, and then to grow into someone who exhibits heroic behavior because someone has to. An example from pop culture that most people would recognize is Han Solo. In "A New Hope", he is a highly capable, but still failing, member of the criminal underground doing what he can just to keep eating and being mobile. In "Return of the Jedi" he had developed into a dedicated leader of men who was attempting to do the things that needed doing. Most of Han Solo's changes happened off-camera. Gudada's should be all on camera, as it were.

-Why are you at the swallowtail festival?

Coincidence. Gudada is in Sandpoint nearly 2 weeks after having buried his mother, and is concluding the traditional mourning period. He's hoping that the festival may attract another Varisian caravan and offer him the opportunity to join their ranks and return to the role he's gotten comfortable filling.

I sat down this morning and ran through your questions. I was right, only one of them challenged me. The rest I knew how to answer fairly quickly.

Which was the challenge? His strength, actually.

Gudada's not QUITE an anti-hero, but he is a very flawed human being with aspirations set well below what he is capable of achieving. His awakening has a lot of story potential, I think. But of course _I_ think that. <g>

Had a great questionaire written, but the forum ate it. >_<

TAKE TWO!

Who are you?
"Olrun Daerdrencynn, apprentice transmuter of the Order of Cyphers and aspiring Thassilonologist.”

What inspired, forced, or motivated you to take on the life of an adventurer?
"My mentor one said, if you want to be a good archaeologist, you have to get out of the library. Of course, he was trying to get me to leave the study so he could read his latest book privately, but he had a good point regardless. Thassilon's bones lie in many places besides Riddleport."

What is your biggest weakness?
"I've been told that I can be stubborn when I think I'm right, and downright a downright @rse to people I consider my intellectual lessers."

What is your biggest strength?
"My mind, of course. Knowledge is power, the old saying goes, and when you combine knowledge with a wizard's magic, you become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."

What is the most enjoyable thing you remember doing?
"When I learned to cast my first spell. My mentor rapped my knuckles and shouted at me for each misplaced finger or misspoken incantation, but it paid off when I finally managed to make a minor prestidigitation effect. My mentor said I wasn't completely hopeless after all."

What is the most significant thing you remember doing?
"Making the decision to leave Riddleport. My mentor was dead, I was scared and desperate. I followed his instructions, took the books he kept under lock and key, and paid some Varisian caravaneer to take me anywhere but there."

What do you fear?
"That I'll finally meet my match. That I'll find something or someone I can't just power through with magic or intellect. That I'll find the one thing that can power through my magic and intellect and leave me like my mentor, broken and bleeding."

How do you want to be remembered?
"As the most powerful and learned Cyphermage in history!"

What is the line that you won't cross?
"I'll not see knowledge mishandled. Burning books, defacing ruins and stone tablets. Knowledge is more than power, it's the light that will guide our world out of darkness."

What do you see as future goals? Both long and short term.
"Short term? I want to meet with Brodert Quink and start digging in Sandpoint. Yeah, the town's been here for a while, but they can't have picked all the nearby ruins clean. It's not in their character."

"As for long term? I want to learn. I want to get stronger, so strong no mage can match me. Then I might have a chance of returning to Riddleport and giving Tammerhawk the thrashing he deserves for killing my mentor. Inheriting control of the Cyphermages as a result's just an added plus."

What path do you want your character to take (Answer this as a player, what kind of growth would you like to see in your characters and what kind of trials would you like to see him overcome. How would you like your character to 'end up' at the end of the campaign? Take note that this doesn't need to be in line with your characters goals. They may even contradict. These are your goals!)

I want Olrun to be able to take levels in the Cyphermage prestige class as soon as she can access it.

I'm also interested in the Pathfinder Savant prestige class too, symbolizing a diversifying of her knowledge and her starting to go her own way, realizing that the hoarding ways of the Cypher Lodge aren't necessarily her own. It's that mentality that got her mentor killed.

I want her to be humbled and learn the value of working with others. She's developed a mentality that she has to do everything herself because she's the smartest person in the room and has powerful magic at her disposal, and I'd like her to realize that despite the hard path she's chosen for herself, she doesn't have to walk it alone.

I want her to realize how horrible Thassilon's masters truly were, and that sometimes her mentor was right that some secrets should be kept rather than shared, and that her obsession with history and stuff like that should be tempered with empathy for the rest of the world.

Some reconciliation with her estranged family might be nice, as well as an encounter with agents of the man who slew her mentor (Elias Tammerhawk, the head of the Cyphermages, to be exact). But when she returns, she's a better person and by taking control of the Cyphermages, she will steer it in a better direction. To be clear, I don't want to take the campaign off the rails by going to Riddleport. That's what Second Darkness is for. I'll save her going back to Riddleport for a character epilogue.

Why are you at the swallowtail festival?
"To meet one of my mentor's old contacts, Brodert Quink."

I'm throwing my hat into the ring. I present Cadeyrn (Cade to his friends.) I assumed average gold for equipment.

Questions:

-Who are you: (A seemingly straightforward question. What is left when you take away your characters abillities, past and future actions? What is the core concept of this person?)

I am Cadeyrn, a fearsome foe to those who wish to prey upon the innocent and fast friend to those in need.

-What inspired/forced/motivated you to take on the life of an adventurer?

I wanted to see the world. My mother was a follower of Desna, so perhaps it is that as well.

(The true reason is he had nothing left back in the Land of the Linnorm Kings to keep him there.)

-What is your biggest weakness? (Think personal character flaws)

Weaknesses are only strengths that have yet to be revealed.

(Cade's biggest weakness is a deep hatred of all giant kind, which includes a tendency to react before thinking things through where they are concerned.)

-What is your biggest strength? (What seperates your character from another character with the exact same statblock.. in a positive way.)

I am loyal to those who deserve it.

(Truth is, he will be the last one to leave a fight if others are in danger. He is tenacious and refuses to abandon anyone who is in danger.)

-What is the most enjoyable thing you remember doing?

Well, there was that one evening with that Shelynite priestess. Never knew a woman who liked to carve wood as much I do before that.

-What is the most significant thing you remember doing?

Joining up with a Varisian caravan. I've learned a lot from them.

(This is where he developed his brand of fighting and a respect for the culture that surrounds the nomadic people.)

-What do you fear?

Being alone.

-How do you want to be remembered?

As a good man and a kind father, one who was trustworthy and steadfast. One that could be counted on.

-What is the line that you won't cross?

I refuse to harm an innocent, especially a child.

-What do you see as future goals? Both long and short term.

Short term, I intend to spend another year or two as a caravan guard. I want to see a little more of the world before I settle down.

In the long run, I'd like to settle in a small town, start a family, and open a smithy.

I'd like to see him overcome his fears and hatreds. I also expect that he'll be put through the ringer at least once or twice through this campaign.

-Why are you at the swallowtail festival?

Either by chance or by the will of Torag. We happened to pull in a few days before the festival and the elders decided to stay for a few weeks.

Background:

Cade was the son of a ulfen smith and an escaped teifling. His mother was originally from Cheliax and the slave of a wicked noble merchant who delighted in torturing the poor woman. His mother, however, had a secret. When traveling with her master as a girl, she picked up a book that contained the teachings and philosophies of the Desnan faith. Little did she know that the book was dropped for the sole purpose of her finding it. As she read, she felt a peace come over her. A few short days after finding the book, she had become a follower of the Starsong. Her faith had to be a secret one. If her master, a diabloist of the worst sort, had found out, she would have been tortured for weeks then killed.

Fortunately, she was given an opportunity to escape before this could come to pass. Her master sought to establish contacts with merchants from Tian Xia and had traveled north to Kalsgard to do so. Uncharacteristically happy at the prospect of such a deal, he let his guard down. Not a week had passed before the young tiefling woman was free and running to get as far as she could from her former master.

This is when she ran into Cade's father. The man, a kindly follower of Torag, took the tiefling in and helped her make it to his village. Despite the differences in faiths, they fell in love along the journey. And after a year of debate with the village elders, they were wed as husband and wife. Their first son was Cadeyrn, and he was followed by four other brothers and sisters. A large and caring family that provided the foundation on which Cade built his worldview.

Sadly, that foundation crumbled in a night of blood and fire. A frost giant, drunk with ale and rage came down from the mountains and assaulted the village. Cade's father and mother put him in charge of his younger siblings and went to aid in the defense of the village. Sadly, this spelled their doom. The giant slew the defenders then turned the village to rubble. Come morning, Cade was the only survivor. His brothers and sisters crushed by collapsing debris and his parents dead at the broken wall. He buried the dead he could find and prayed over the village that was now a graveyard. Then he left. There was nothing here now.

He arrived at a nearby village a few days later. Half-starved and nearly dead from thirst. He stayed long enough to heal his wounds and refine his skills in combat and the forging of weapons. A caravan from Varisia pulled into the village and he was among the first to sign up as a guard. For the next several years he rode with the caravan along trade routes more ancient than almost anything back in his homeland. He refined his skills and picked up new ones. Adapting the Varisian style of rapier and dirk to heavier blades and picking up wood carving to while away the long hours of boredom.

Now, nearly eight years since the death of his home and family, he is in Sandpoint, just in time for the Swallowtail Festival. Seeing this as an opportunity to remember his mother's memory, the young ulfen has made an effort to be more sociable and forge new friendships. He is familiar with the ways of the Varisians that have adopted him, and knows that he'll likely be spending weeks here.

Appearance and Personality:

Cade is tall and broad. His physique toned by hours in the forge and honing his skills with his weapons. His strong-featured face is framed by a mess of black hair and the ever-present stubble along his jaw. His eyes are the only hint at his unusual heritage, being a dark, almost black, red that sometimes seems to glow when his anger is roused.

His time with the Varisians has helped lift the dark moods that seemed to be a constant companion to him shortly after the deaths of his parents and siblings. They still appear from time to time, but those times are few an far between. Most of the time, he enjoys an ale or three with friends and listening to tales of their exploits. He is quick to smile and laugh. He loves to be with children and takes an almost child-like glee in telling them stories and teaching them the skills of wood-carving.

-Who are you: I'm just a straight forward kid who wants to do good in this world. This life isn't fair, and I never expect it to be. However as long as a few more people can live easier and safer, then I know my job is done, and my goal is satisfied.

-What inspired/forced/motivated you to take on the life of an adventurer? My older brother and sister. We share the same blood, but not the same shape. After our father left though when I was born, my brother took care of us. As I grew up, they didn't care that I was different, they helped raise me. My brother ended up fighting goblins in the countryside and woods, and I began to admire and wanted to join him. He taught me how to defend myself, and my sister taught me the way of the land. When I grew old enough, my mother gave her blessing fpr me to make my own path. So I took my leave and headed out into the world.

-What is your biggest weakness? Despite not being like the other kids, my older siblings still treated me like I was nothing special. And when my little sisters grew up with me, they did the same. And to be honest, I miss those days. In fact, I think of them quite often, which also distracts me from time to time.

-What is your biggest strength? I feel I'm different for reasons aside from my appearance. I may appear otherworldly, but my family instilled in me that despite my celestial blood, my blood was still there. Keeping my feet planted in the ground helped me focus on what my brother and sister taught me, while retaining what is important in life.

-What is the most enjoyable thing you remember doing? Spending time with my older siblings. Even when we weren't training, we were always together as often as we could. Our little sisters weren't like us, they were full human. So being the half elf I should have been kept them as a whole.

-What is the most significant thing you remember doing? Saving my youngest sister. My mother was at the church, my brother on a hunt, and my older sister teaching my younger sister about the land. While I was just past the treeline practicing my sword skills. I hadn't noticed that my youngest sister had snuck out from the church to come watch me. As I was just about to call it a day, I heard her scream from behind me. As she ran past me to hide, I spotted the rogue goblin that had tried to attack her. Only thinking of the safety my baby sister, I reacted in defense and waited for the goblin to make his attack. Once the goblin had almost gotten close enough to grab my throat, I thrust my short blade upwards and pierced it's skin. I fell back and landed with a dead goblin on top of me, my blade stuck through his head. Not only did I just earned my first goblin kill, I had earned it saving my family.

-What do you fear? I fear that I won't be able to save someone. As much good that I know I bring, there's always going to be just as much bad out there. I just fear the day that I can't stop the bad.

-How do you want to be remembered? If I'm remembered for anything, I would want it to be for the good I've done in the world. I may not change it, but I can help make a difference in it.

-What is the line that you won't cross? Straight murder. I may hunt goblins for the safety of the land, but I know not all of them are evil. My brother taught me to hunt down goblins not for revenge, but to protect. My sister taught me that while I hunt to protect, overprotection can cause more harm than it does good. So when I kill, it's not to destroy, it's to protect only what I have to.

-What do you see as future goals? Both long and short term. For now my goal is to aide as many people as I can. Though I suppose when I come to terms that I can relax, I would like to have a family of my own that I can pass my knowledge down onto.

-What path do you want your character to take? Satinder is young and naïve. Right now he has this built notion that good needs to be triumphant over evil as much as it can. With how this campaign runs and the paths it goes through, I've always wondered what it would do to a character who is young and naïve like Satinder. I don't have straight goals with him, being as any goals would somehow be based on the campaign's end game, so instead my only goal is to let him be shaped by the story and those around him.

-Why are you at the swallowtail festival? I've arrived at the Swallowtail Festival only by coincidence. I was intending to arrive in Sandpoint to offer my services to help against the recent attacks by goblins, I just didn't realize that there was a festival taking place.

I don't have his full stats as I don't know how much gold we're starting with, but everything else stat wise is good to go. Let me know what else you want from him if there is anything.

Questionary:
Who are you?
Brunhin Rustbeard, traveling brewer and faithful of Cayden.

What inspired, forced, or motivated you to take on the life of an adventurer?
Me old man shamed our family, and thanks to the strict rules of Janderhoff his shame fell upon me. No thanks. Pops was a fool and is going to pay for it. Me, I’m gone. I’m not living my life apologiz-ing for me father’s mistakes.

What is your biggest weakness?
I think people are basically good, y’know? Sometimes they ain’t and they try to take advantage of me. I’m quick to notice them bastards though, and drop the hammer on them. But, you know… I should know better.

What is your biggest strength?
Good with a hammer, Cayden at my side, a quick wit and a charming smile under this gorgeous beard? Do I need more?

What is the most enjoyable thing you remember doing?
The first taste of Goldbrew special year of ’11. We had to take care of an ogre, no kiddin’, to get to the only patch of foxleaf around, but it was worth it. Old Grandma Audie knows how to toast the barley just as well as she can hex the next fool, I tell you that…

What is the most significant thing you remember doing?
Leaving my home, no doubt. I can be free an’ everything, but for a dwarf, leaving home is a big moment. first time with no roof over me head I almost puked.

What do you fear?
That people under the Mindspin Mountains will remember my father’s wrongdoings more than my efforts to make the world a safer place.

How do you want to be remembered?
As a warm, smiling, no nonsense guy. I’m not after glory, not after fame. I only seek

What is the line that you won't cross?
Many. I won’t assassinate an innocent. I won’t enslave someone, and most likely I won’t bear to see someone else enslaved. And of course, I will never, never dilute a fine brew.

What do you see as future goals? Both long and short term.
I guess for now I’m happy making brews, singing the good tale of Cayden and protecting small towns.
I do want to clear my family name under Janderhoff. That’s a long way to go, but I guess if I come back with evidence of a great deed, that would be enough.

What path do you want your character to take (Answer this as a player, what kind of growth would you like to see in your characters and what kind of trials would you like to see him overcome. How would you like your character to 'end up' at the end of the campaign? Take note that this doesn't need to be in line with your characters goals. They may even con-tradict. These are your goals!)
Since Brunhin is pretty easy-going, in the long run he can go in many directions. I would like to see his resolve to uphold freedom against slavery put to a test, in a difficult situation with shades of grey. The “clearing his father’s name” thing can be either addressed in game or just be an epilogue.

Why are you at the swallowtail festival?
There’s brews, games, and feasts! Seems like a festival Cayden himself though up.

Background:

Brunhin, son of Helma, of the Rustbeard family, was born 50 years ago in Janderhoff, a thriving city in the southern Mindspin Mountains overlooking Bloodsworn Vale. His family, for generations, imported cereals from Varisia to make some of the finest ales in the Mountains. As much as he would’ve loved to continue the family traditions – he took pride in fine brewing just as his mother, father and siblings – he also felt a bit restricted by the rules of Janderhoff, whose strict body of law left little room for innovation. He asked his father for permission to travel west, to Varisia, to bring home new cereal samples to try out new brews, and his old man agreed that it was a good idea.
But when he came back, he found his father shaved and in shame – his job lost, sentenced to work in a deep mine for selling diluted ale and tainted brews. Ashamed of what his father did, he decided to go back to Varisia, changing his patronymic for a matronymic and embracing the human god Cayden, protector of personal freedom and fine brews. Always one for working with his hands rather than just pray at a temple, Brunhin traveled through most of the western Avistan, evaluating in the name of Cayden most taverns and inns, giving advice where he felt the brewer could’ve used it and learning from those he felt were better than him.

Personality:

Brunhin is a warm and laughing soul. True to Cayden’s teachings, he enjoys adventure, feasts and good camaraderie. His childhood in the Mindspin Mountains left him with a bit of a sour aftertaste regarding strict rules and those who enforce them, but all in all he sees the possible value in a body of law and an organized community, just doesn’t seek it out.
He likes to solve problems with diplomacy if civilized beings are involved, resorting to violence only as a last effort. Against monsters who seek to disrupt the happiness of a community, he is instead an implacable foe.
Apart from monsters and slavers, the only thing capable of really enraging him are innkeeper who dilute beer and wine for a quick buck. Such people should be dumped in a barrel of vinegar.

Appearance:

A young and smiling dwarf, Brunhin stands four and half feet tall. Slightly less stocky and wirier than most dwarves, his body looks like a loaded spring full of energy. He sports the rust-colored hair that his nickname indicates, and both hair and beard are thick, short (for a dwarf) and shaggy. He has fair skin dotted with freckles. He wears comfortable travel clothes covered with sturdy, but not too heavy, armor. He always carries around his lucky tankard and a few weapons – notably a warhammer and a bow.

Because I got curious, I decided to give myself a quick overview of the competition/help. When I had finished putting it together, I figured I could share without insulting anybody. At least, I hope it is without insulting anybody.

Looking back through the thread, I see these 15 characters at least partially defined and submitted:
Brinn Argentari - Human Sorcerer
Brunhin Rustbeard - Dwarf Inquistor of Cayden
Cadeyrn - Human Fighter
Dr. Jedidiah Mor - Human Alchemist (Healer focus?)
Erynion Orvir - Elf Archivist Bard
Gudada Purrun - Human Rogue
Jack Erizo - Half-Elf Mysterious Stranger Gunslinger
Lukain Callinova - Human Carnivalist Rogue
Morythine Ette - Dhampir Hungry Ghost Monk
Nar'a - Human (?) Witch (Fortune teller)
Olrun Daerdrencynn - Human (?) Transmutation Specialist Wizard
Satinder Coric - Aasimar Ranger
Shane Teldean - Human Shielded Fighter
Steward Cavendish - Human Hunter
Vulorah Whitemane - Elf Bard

Breaking them out into some of the more common categories (without focusing on the details of the actual builds, just the nature of the classes selected):

Combat Specialists: 7:
Brunhin Rustbeard
Cadeyrn
Jack Erizo
Morythine Ette
Satinder Coric
Shane Telden
Steward Cavendish

Arcane Casters: 6:
Brinn Argentari
Dr. Jedidiah Mor
Erynion Orvir
Nar'a
Olrun Daerdrencynn
Vulorah Whitemane

Divine Casters: 2:
Brunhin Rustbeard
Steward Cavendish

Skill-Based: 7:
Dr. Jedidiah Mor
Erynion Orvir
Gudada Purrun
Lukain Callinova
Morythine Ette
Satinder Coric
Vulorah Whitemane

Divine Casting options look thin, but 6 of the characters CAN do magical healing. I'm not saying their builds do, just that they can. Heck, only two casters submitted don't have healing on their class spell list!

My best guess put 8 different characters into a single category only. The 7 others each fit into potentially two categories.

I had to hit the internet to find out that the Carnivalist is a Paizo archetype. I had never heard of it. Heck, I had never heard of the Pathfinder Player Companion: Animal Archive (where it was published) before, either. A rogue with a familiar . . .. Interesting.

EDIT: Minkers didn't say when on the 20th he's cutting submissions. For those of us in the USA, though, you should be aware that midnight the night of the 20th his time will be about 6 PM Eastern. Yep, that means it is almost midnight on the morning of the 20th for him right now.

yeah, it's an amazing little thing.

So that puts this list for multiple use characters as:

Brunhin Rustbeard
Morythine Ette
Satinder Coric
Steward Cavandish
Dr. Jedidiah Mor
Erynion Orvir
Vulorah Whitemane

For the last hour I´ve been trying to write a post to respond to each and every submission but as I see that some speculations have arisen while I was away I´ll take a break from that and clarify a couple of things.

Firstly, the post that I promised about how I´ll handle animal submissions got lost during the crash of Paizo´s forums.

Secondly, the crash also prevented me from announcing that I had a tabletop game-binge planned this weekend.

I have considered the situation and came up with the following two things.

I'm willing to push character submission to January 22nd. I understand that some people had planned on working on their character in the weekend but couldn't due to Pazo's crash. I calculated at what time I plan to sleep on the 22nd and it would be at roughly 5-6 pm CST. The neccesary decisions will be made at roughly 10 am CST the day after.

I'm willing to push the character slots from 4-5 to 6-7. I'd rather GM outside of my comfortzone than agonize more about which characters to involve in the game. There are a whole bunch of good concepts and picking only 4 would be hard.

Yes I'm aware of my contradiction there.

I'll get back on replying on submissions now.

All the more reason to have a fellow GM in your party lol. I miss binge gaming weekends, been a long while since I've done that

Wolfgang Rolf: Thank you for taking the alignment seriously. I look forward to see what you bring to the table.

Nar'a: Those were my thoughts exactly!

Dr. Jedidah Mor: It's an exciting race! All of your character concepts are going to make it very difficult for me to just pick a couple.

Morythine Ettes: I usually don't mind very long backstories. And I'll look at the entire entry soon. But I'm in a break during a tabletop session here, so I can't do it now. I'll get back to you!

Vulorah Whitemane: I'm a big fan of option 2. Everything happens for a reason after all.

James Martin: As for the goblin.. knowing the adventure path, I think that I should think that one over. And for your knowledge of the campaign.. as I've said to KyleS:

Quote:

I've been wondering what I would do if this situation would arise.. And I've come to the conclusion that your knowledge of the campaign isn't really a problem. RotR is one of the most famous adventure paths if I'm not mistaken. I can't blame someone for knowing it. As a DM you probably know the horror of metagaming players, that makes it very easy to trust you on your word.

And who knows, maybe your knowledge of the AP and setting can actually be beneficial to the game! (Spotting derailments ooc or accurately playing someone with high knowledge local ic)
Feel free to submit a character!

Lukain Callinova: Thanks! I've got a better idea of who your character is now. And I like it!

Erynion Orvir:Everything looks good so far, it's a nice and detailed visual description. If you feel like expanding on his background and personality you can use the questionairre or any other method you feel comfortable with.

James Martin: I think your concept could work. Mogawmp will receive no racial intolerance from my behalf.

Gudada Purrun: This looks very good! I wish I had anything to add to that but I don't. It seems like you really got into the mind of this Varisian. This is amazing. (And you were right, the phrasing of the first question could be better.)

Brinn Argentari: Thank you for the clarifications!

Irnk, Dead-Eye's Prodigal: I look forward to meeting your character.

Morythine Ettes: I have only been able to read the short version of your characters history for now. I´d like to prepare myself a bit before I tackle the longer story. (To my shame I must admit that I´m not very familiar with Galt and have some reading up to do in order to put everything in place.) But it looks very promising so far! I´ll get back to you on this.

Jack Erizo: You filled the open spaces of the gunsmithing heritage nicely! Good work!

Archpaladin Zousha: Cool concept, nice mix of crunch and fluff ideas for your Olrun's future. I look forward to seeing more.

AdamWarnock: Cool way of making the story span generations. We should talk about fleshing out the specifics of the Varisian Caravan before the game starts, it seems like they will be staying throughout a big part of the game.

Satinder Coric: I like the idea of a naïve character. Since his family is so important to him maybe we could think about where they are at the moment? I think it would be nice to involve them in the campaign at some point.

Airon87: I have nothing to add to that other than that I need a drinking buddy like him!

-I've covered everyone for now, right? (except for Morythine, who I need to some homework for.)

Sorry for being unclear about this: Average starting gold is the way to go.

I wanted to give you all a heads up about what I'll ask myself while chosing which characters will fit the campaign. I don't expect anyone to write specific answers to this, just thought I should be open about this.

-How much is there in the character background for me to work with?
As I stated earlier, I want this game to be the story of your characters. Not so much of goblin menaces or evil wizards. To do that I try and weave in parts of your character history with the events of the campaign. This way the story takes a more personal role and will gave the characters more personal motivations to pursue some of the plot hooks.

-Will I be able to craft a personal story arch for this character? This is somewhat dependent on my own creativity but having a fleshed out character helps. During the course of the game I'd like to see the characters grow in more than just stat numbers. To do so I'll create situations which would facilitate such a growth. If by reading your character I get cool ideas to do so he/she will be most likely become a part of the group.

-What will be the most interesting combination of characters?
For this I look at both the characters history and personality. This is a bit dependent on your fellow players. It would serve the game if the combination of characters create enough conflict within the group to help keep things interesting but not so much as to make the game frustrating and take away from the fun. I also intend to tie some of the backgrounds together from behind the scenes so that during the game there is more room for character development.

-Will the combination of characters be able to overcome RoTR's trials?
I will look at party balance last. If the combination of character strength and weaknesses is still too one sided I'll reconsider my first choices. You don't have to worry that you'll get stuck with an unbalanced party because of my preferences.

Aight, I'll finish Satinder up then with equipment and backstory. That way it can give you an idea if you want to involve his family.

Granted it's not my call, but having a goblin in this group can really add for the story if that's what you're going for. But you're gonna have to figure out how you're gonna implement his existence with it being a no explanation good guy or instant death bad guy type of deal. Just my advice.

I would love to be a part of this game, and I love the idea of heavy RP. I hope I'm not too late to be considered. A complete character and a bit more background can be found in my profile.

-Who are you: (A seemingly straightforward question. What is left when you take away your characters abillities, past and future actions? What is the core concept of this person?)

I am a man! Mother and Uncle cannot take that away from me. I am a man and I will prove to my fath . . . I mean myself that I am worthy and not someone you can run away from!

-What inspired/forced/motivated you to take on the life of an adventurer?

I was not born to be a clerk. I am destined to follow in my father's footsteps. I know he must have been a great wizard, so I will be on too.

-What is your biggest weakness? (Think personal character flaws)

I am young . . . but I am powerful. I let my temper get away from me sometimes. People don't always understand I know what I'm doing and treat me like a child. I am no child! I made it to Kaer Maga from Sargava on my own. Uncle was a fool to try and hold me back. I know it is wrong to defy Mother, and I miss her, but she didn't understand, I need to prove myself

-What is your biggest strength? (What separates your character from another character with the exact same statblock.. in a positive way.)

I am determined. I will be a force for good in this place. When I prove myself, I will return in triumph to support and serve my family.

-What is the most enjoyable thing you remember doing?

The day I met Moninga. Finally someone who saw me for myself, finally someone who I didn't have to hide from. We like to pretend he is bird. He stands on an old board and I make it fly. He snaps at the bright lights I can create. We steal sweet treats from Uncle's store, and he helps with my paints. I see he is more than he appears to be, like me. We will be friends forever.

-What is the most significant thing you remember doing?

The day I found my father's book. It must be my father's, whatever my cousins say. Buried deep in storage in my Uncle's offices. How dare he try to keep it from me. With it I discovered my legacy.

-What do you fear?

I fear disappointing Mother. Something I have done, but will correct when she sees how powerful I become. I fear losing the path of my father. It is cold and difficult to see sometimes, but it is the path set to me by fate and a legacy of greatness. (I fear I am wrong, and there is nothing special about me. I am just a foolish boy who found a book and dreams stupid dreams. But that is Uncle talking and not what whispers to me in the dark, far from home . . . missing my home and cousins and most of all Mother)

-How do you want to be remembered?

I will be remembered with the same breath that shouts the name of my father! I will be remembered as one of the great wizards of the world! I will be remembered as a good son. I will be remembered as doing the right thing when my story is done, though all denied it at the start.

-What is the line that you won't cross?

I said I would do it all on my own, but . . . but it is no fault to except help kindly and freely given. I said that my powers are to be used in service only, but it is no failing to earn money for food and clothing and shelter. I said I would not hurt Mother, but Shailii said Mother cried when she read my note.

This I will never do, I will never turn from my destiny

-What do you see as future goals? Both long and short term.

I seek to learn to foster my gifts with the knowledge of this savage land. I want to learn more of Thassalonia, and the Varisians who came after. I wish to find the thread of my father's journeys and follow that thread to see why he was not able to come back to us. I wish to prove my greatness to all who doubted me. Beyond this, I will let destiny reveal itself to me.

I want to see V'Thamuus grow from the naive scared boy he is into a true man. I hope to explore Thassalonian magic to its natural conclusion. I want him to become a true student of Wrath. I see his alignment shifting from NG to LN throughout the campaign as he makes sacrifices for what he perceives as his destiny. This is already a big part of his personality, but I'd like to be put into positions where his morals come into conflict, and he has to make tough choices - be great or be good. I expect his to make the wrong choice frequently, but hope he has a chance at redemption at the end of the campaign. I don't know if he'll ever find his dad, but that is almost an excuse for V'Thamuus to imagine a great destiny for himself. Actually meeting his dad might just crush him.

Mechanically, I want V'Thamuus to become the greatest wielder of magic missile there has ever been. To support that I included an adaption of the Force Missile Mage prestige class to Pathfinder. The original was published by Paizo, and I changed it very little.

-Why are you at the swallowtail festival?

I have been sent by the Arcanist's Circle of Kaer Maga to retrieve some rare components. It is my hope that I can use this to become a full member of the guild and get access to their rarer tomes. I want to do more than scribe minor scrolls for the shops, and this is the first opportunity they have given me to do something important.

Satinder's backstory is up for you to look at Minkers. Have fun reading and don't be afraid to ask questions!

I've added a little more backstory and added more to the personality. I would like to have the parents and dwarf placed in the world but I'm unfamiliar with this AP and with the pathfinder world in general(most of the games I played were homebrewed or didn't last long). i would also like to add more to my backstory but I'm currently stumped and would be open to connecting with others if they wish.

What exactly do you mean by character's story, as opposed to "How its written"? I'm not sure exactly what you mean by that, and reading comprehension is, according to my grades, my best quality.

Cheers. I also hope to address the different questions posited in the opening post of recruitment, but regrettably, it won't be tonight. For what it's worth, I'll also mention I run my own campaign on the boards here, and have done so for nearly a year, so I'll be a reliable poster.

Finally, Minkers, how should we address you; DM, GM, simply Minkers or his Glorious Great Green Wartiness?

Assuming this has not closed, I present you all with another Divine Caster. I have no high hopes, but I enjoy offering a product of mine to the masses. In case someone finds fault with my ability scores, this character is Middle-Aged, which grants +1 to all mental scores and a penalty of -1 to all physical scores. I did this not for the sake of power gaming, but merely because I've never played a middle-aged character before. If this is an issue, then there is no need to consider my character.

Spoiler:
-Who are you: I call myself Forlorna, but most have taken to naming me Forlorna the Storyseeker. My blood name I no longer have claim to. At best, I am a retriever of forgotten knowledge, one who tells the untold tales, and revives the past so it may live again. At worst, I am a pillager of secrets, a reminder of buried pains, who refuses to accept that there are somethings better not known.

-What inspired/forced/motivated you to take on the life of an adventurer?: My avarice for knowledge, my need to open closed doors, and the sins I made doing so. I paid great prices for what I know today, but I continue to crave even more.

-What is your biggest weakness?: Unfaltering curiosity

-What is your biggest strength?: My ability to look past the mundane and ordinary, and perceive the unique and fascinating.

-What is the most enjoyable thing you remember doing?: As a child, I found the world a wonderful place. But it wasn't until I learned to read, and opened one of my father's books in his studies that I found that not only the living spoke. Dead authors, ancient philosophers, great leaders- Through records and monuments and powerful acts throughout history, we could remember and learn from the past. From then on, I decided my future would aso hold the past in close consideration.

-What is the most significant thing you remember doing?: I sold part of myself for knowledge from a Devil. There is no mild way of putting it. I yearned for more, know, required more. There are so many mysteries within this world, so much forgotten and unexplained. So I gave up part of myself, part of my future, so as to better understand the past. But what I didn't know was that the price included my clan as well. But my own story is not worth telling now, no. I do not regret my choice, only that others suffered for my sins.

-What do you fear?: I fear being forgotten. I fear being like a tome whose pages have long since been erased. I fear no one remembering me, when I have died. I fear my grave being unattended, my stories untold, and my work without a future.

-How do you want to be remembered?: I want to be remembered at all. The details are less important. But I suppose I'd want to be remembered as I am, rather than what I am not.

-What is the line that you won't cross?: I am uncertain, for the gravest transgression I could make has already become a part of history.

-What do you see as future goals?: I want to know all. A silly, foolish, and arrogant dream, but I do not deny my own heart. In the present, of course, I wish to live, I wish to learn, and I wish to experience the world, and claim its secrets. As for the future, what is inevitable will be inevitable.

-What path do you want your character to take: My characters are almost always organic. While they may have short-term missions or paths, their long term is always open, for they are people. Their companions, their friends, their enemies- All may have a chance to influence Forlorna and her beliefs. But ultimately, at the core of Folorna is her quest for knowledge. What she will sacrifice, and how far she'll go to obtain it will be pivotal points in her developments. How she'll decide will be critical to whom she is. Can she resist the temptation for knowledge? Will she go too far into the darkness, and be unable to save herself? Will she ever die satisfied? Could she ever intentionally sacrifice other for the sake of learning the past, present, and future? These are what will drive her quest.

-Why are you at the swallowtail festival?: Varisia is one of the lands with the greatest amount of secrets. An ancient forgotten empire, powerful magicks, home to people with centuries of history. It is only natural that she be drawn to this land, and with Sandpoint being one of the largest settlements within the country, Forlorna's presence is not unusual. That said, her arrival a few days before the festival will not have been planned, but instead coincidence, something she takes in her stride. The chance to experience the local ceremonies and earn coin telling some stories are merely bonuses for the middle-aged woman, who has yet to realize the path destiny will be placing her upon.

Quick OOC Notes: Her blackened hands curse will be associated with the Devil whom she made a contract with, which in turn granted her access to the time mystery. The wrecker curse, however, will be associated with her exile from Kyonin, a karmic curse formed from her unintentional ruining of her clan. The breaking of items will represent her hands causing held objects to wither and waste, time accelerating for the object until it is marred from wear and tear. This is all flavor, of course, but that's how I'll be playing it.

In addition, I've intentional left some details unexplained, so as to be able to go deeper into it if accepted in the RP.

Apologies.
Will get finished profile and questions answered this evening.

Still around, hopefully will get around to answering the questions and updating the back story of the character I am going with before recruitment ends.

I'm officially withdrawing my interest in this game. I won't be able to complete my submission in time. Have fun guys!

Questions:

Who are you:
I am Nar’a….Shoanti…nobody…heh...heh… depends on who you ask, neh? I seek. What do I seek? My destiny.
What inspired/forced/motivated you to take on the life of an adventurer?
There can only be one Kholi. My leaving was the only solution, to go out into the world.
What is your biggest weakness?
<frowns> weakness is for fools! Heh, perhaps that is my weakness, neh?
What is your biggest strength?
<frowns again> I fear nothing! Heh, heh, maybe that’s a weakness too?
What is the most enjoyable thing you remember doing?
Shiva led me to the top of a cliff along the shore there. I found him perched there and he waited for me. When I reached him he flew off of the cliff, wanting me to follow. So I followed, diving off of the cliff into the water many tens of feet below. For some moments I was as Shivi was, free with the wind.
What is the most significant thing you remember doing?
Removing myself from my tribe and people
What do you fear?
Didn’t I answer that already?
How do you want to be remembered?
Memory is like the wind. When I am dust, the spirits will know what I did and who I was. My destiny is not yet written, who knows what the spirits will remember.
What is the line that you won't cross?
Friends are family! Never betray a friend’s trust.
What do you see as future goals?
I’ve made a home here in Sandpoint, made some friends, so I am content. Until Shivi shows me a different path, I will remain. I want to learn all of what my spirit will reveal to me , the trickle of power it has provided me only whets my appetite.
What path do you want your character to take
I want to see Nar’a embark on a journey of self-discovery. She’s a blank slate, I want to see her wonder at the power’s she’ll be given, and learn the responsibility that goes along with whether that be to herself or to others.
Why are you at the swallowtail festival?
Nar’a had been dragged to the festival, kicking and screaming by her friend Ameiko. She’s even wearing a dress! (of course there’s a dagger bound to each leg!)

OK profile's mostly done, I need to get my skills fixed plus some formatting.

Now you've gone & tempted me to adjust this concept, which was originally for Jade Regent, and see how well it might fly in RotRL...

Which was not my original intention. Would you object to two entries from me? With the clear understanding that if either was offered, the other would not be.

This is me giving into the aforementioned temptation. Expect to see a Human Wizard concept tomorrow.

Morythine Ettes: Character background is approved! We'll wait and see if Detheris' wrath will follow the Dhampir from half across te continent. I don't feel the need to be all too formal with eachother. You can call me Minkers, GM, “He who's farts go uncontested.” whatever pleases you.

V'Thamuus Diwanimi: This is good stuff! There are a whole bunch of things that I like about this character. And that leaves me with little more to ask.

Satinder Coric: So the Coric family still resides in closeby Nybor? That will work perfectly.

Jack Erizo: Good update! As for connecting the dots between players. We'll get to that after submission. It would be a shame if some of the ties were severed because other characters don't make it into the game.

Mekura: I meant as opposed to how te adventure path is written. I plan to step away from the published material to delve into character driven plots every now and then.

Forlorna:Everything looks great. As for the details left unexplained (especially how the deal with the demon brought ruin for your clan) do you want to work together on thos or would you rather keep those in your (blackened) hands?

Nar'a: I'm a great fan of Nar'a and the answers to the questionairre have done nothing to change that.

Wolfgang Rolf:You have quite some time left available. Depending on how busy your schedule is you have nothing to worry about. If you're really too late with character submission post the concept anyway, just in case I decide to run a second group sometime or some player leaves the game.

Archpaladin Zousha: You can take on the same offer I made Wolfgang, if you'd like. If not well, too bad to see you go.

Irnk, Dead-Eye's Prodigal: Sure, send in two submissions.

Indeed. The Coric family still resides in Nybor. Just let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to answer them for you. This seems like we'd have an interesting group just based on the submissions though, that's for sure.

Ask away. At this point Thim is an open book. He's a bit naive that way.

Updated my profile with a completed build, however I'm still not sure if my first level bonus feat should be TWF or precise strike. Also no statblock for Ysmeralda yet but more on her below...

I just saw you knew nothing about the Carnivalist Rogue (which is forgivable as it's rather obscure) so I just wanted to give you a quick run down of what the idea behind the build was even though you seem more interested in flavor than mechanics.

What I'm trying to do with Lukain is to set my familiar, Ysmeralda the Bilge Rat, up as a flanking partner for Lukain. On the one hand this allows me more control over a key class feature (Sneak attack) on the other hand Ysmeralda shares Lukain's Sneak attack progression and is small sized so she threatens, meaning Biting Bilge rats are actually a good thing... To make this even more OP (humor) Ysmeralda takes the Valet familiar Archetype (also from Animal Archive) which gives here all Teamwork feats Lukain has. So once Lukain has picked up Precise strike and Outflank the two of them are one hell of a tag team.

lurking beneath the floorboards.

I like applications like this. They make applying fun. So just based on this I'm giving this a shot.

Here's my character Aliver, a halfling ranger with the guide and skirmisher archetypes. The crunch could use some slight tweaking, but most of it should be there. Took the monster hunter trait because it's the closest fit.

QUESTIONAIRE

Spoiler:
Who are you: (A seemingly straightforward question. What is left when you take away your characters abillities, past and future actions? What is the core concept of this person?)

Who am I? Whaddya mean who am I. I be tha best damn archer this side of Varisia and I dare ya ta try and prove otherwise. I remember my first kill, nailed an orc right in the eye a hundred yards away. It's not a lie. You don't know that. You weren't there. Did it with me lucky bow that I got off a bet in a card game with a travelling elf with orange eyes and an earing in his nose. Elves do too got orange eyes, it's true I tell ya. What I'm getting at is I'm a pround and sentimental man with a passion for stories and the life which creates these stories.

-What inspired/forced/motivated you to take on the life of an adventurer?

Lemme tell ya a story. When I was but a wee boy being raised by my human family, I was lost in the woods for two days with nothing but a crossbow one of the bigger boys gave to me as a joke cuz they thought I looked funny or 'cute' with it. Ugh. Anyways, I survived there two days. Just halfling vs nature. And halfling came up on top and I found my family and I've been a caravaner ever since, but lately y'know, caravaning's great and all. It's in me blood. But it's about time I go for the big score. I hear there's guys who plunder dungeons and stuff for a few years, and they go retire and start a shop or tavern or something. That's what I want to do. I mean 'sides, either way I wasn't going to live long with the way I been living.

-What is your biggest weakness? (Think personal character flaws)

My weakness is that sometimes I get a little carried away with stories and stuff I guess. If you call that a weakness. I think me weaknesses are actually some of what make me such interesting company. Oh and I guess some people say I'm a bit arrogant I guess. And I'm sort of a pack rat and I drink, but hey who DOESN'T drink in this business. And who knows, you might throw out something you needed later. Don't care if me house is a mess. I just stuff it under the bed when I got company.

-What is your biggest strength? (What separates your character from another character with the exact same statblock.. in a positive way.)

Well I guess my biggest strength is my optimism. Never say die, that's what I say. It isn't over until it's over and all that. If there's a jam, I try and find me way out of it with my great eyesight, catlike agility and remarkable cunning. And good looks of course. *prominently displays moustache and earrings*

-What is the most enjoyable thing you remember doing?

Well I guess I have pretty fond memories of setting up here. After I left the family it wasn't easy. Didn't have much money, but then I found this place. I found a place to stash all that stuff and went on a run through the taverns here, and I got to go out into the woods. I remember this one time in the first week I met with some lads and went hunting. Long story short, I took on a dare or two from them, and before I knew it, I was riding a goblin dog home, clinging for me life and hoping the guards wouldn't take a shot at me. They said I couldn't ride one of those things. I sure showed them. Good times.

-What is the most significant thing you remember doing?

I grew a mustache, when they told me I could only grow sideburns And what a glorious mustache it is. Though I guess if ya want to be more substantial, I've helped this town with a couple of the goblin problems and have driven caravans all the way from the swamps to the mountains. That stuff helped some people out I guess. I'm still more proud of my mustache though.

-What do you fear?

Fear eh? Well I'd hate to admit it, but I DID have a scare a while back. Y'see, I lost my Kapenia. Now for those of ye out of town, a Kapenia is like a scarf wit metal bits in it. It's a quilt, that shows your family history if you're a Varisian. Passed down from generation to generation. Now I'm not a proper human, but I was adopted by a family who knew my parents--bless their souls. My 'siblings' made it for me. Took what they knew about my parents and sewed it in. Best gift I ever got. It became a parting gift once I left my human family to pursue my own interests. Anyway, one day I lost it, and the short version of it was I spends three days in the woods trying to find it, only to find it in the hands of the biggest Goblin I've ever seen. He was using the thing as a weapon. Can you believe people would do that? Anyway, I killed the thing and took it back. What I fear most is losing anything that brings me memories. I don't like the idea of forgetting the stories that made me who I am.

-How do you want to be remembered?

I want people to remember me as the guy who always proved people wrong. Who raised expectations on what a man of my stature can do. As a man who made people laugh and at the same time look in awe at me having the gall to do all the things I did. That's how I want them to tell stories about me in the taverns. It don't matter if it's throughout the country, or even if it's just being told by old friends. Though I guess I prefer the first one.

-What is the line that you won't cross?

I don't tend to side with those who would oppress or belittle my people. I like people to have a reasonable amount of freedom. I won't take away from that. Taking anyone's gods given freedom. That's a line I won't cross.

This I will never do: I will never forget where I came from

-What do you see as future goals? Both long and short term.

Short term I want to explore, kill besties and make some profit while doing it. There's no harm in that. Protecting the town also I guess, but that's mostly cuz my stuff is in it.

Long term I plan to settle down, maybe learn to cook and open an inn or something. I think that'd be cool. Be one of those people who went to war and retired to the good part of the country. This part ain't the best, but we'll see how it is in a coupla years.

I believe Aliver should, mature as a character. He's a halfling and he's not old yet, but he's still an arrogant, wanderlust ridden, ambitious teenager with a bow essentially, even if his teen years are long behind him. Perhaps he should also become a little less self-absorbed. Right now the people he's cared about behind himself are in his past. He's not a sociopath or malicious or anything, but he does think a lot about himself. He's probably neutral or somewhere on the South side of good. So yes, at the end I figure he should be more humble, more attached to non-Aliver people, even if it's just a little bit. Over the course of the campaign, he should diversify his skills as well. Rely less on bows and more on his mind to solve problems. Aliver should probably also learn to diversify combat wise, using more creative tactics or not just sticking to bolts and arrows. He should be challenged both mentally and socially. Other problems not involving monsters and caravans.

-Why are you at the swallowtail festival?

Uh, why WOULDN'T I be at the festival. It's tradition, there's drink, games, girls, nice weather, girls, drink...Anyway, what I'm saying is even if I don't look like one of 'em native fullblood Varisians, I be more Varisian than a whole lotta them. I moved here sorta recently. Been getting to know the folk. Good folk. I gotta place here on Mud Street. It's a hole, I ain't gonna lie, but with the Sandpoint Devil and them goblins, I figure I'll have me hands full in my new monster hunting, treasure grabbing, dungeon digging job.

I hope I'm not too late for the festival. That trip took longer than expected.

-Who are you: (A seemingly straightforward question. What is left when you take away your characters abillities, past and future actions? What is the core concept of this person?)
Yes, that does seem a bit straightforward of you. I suppose I would find my definition of self among my family and friends at Mordant Spire. It's in my relation to them that I am who I am.
-What inspired/forced/motivated you to take on the life of an adventurer?
I would hardly call myself an adventurer. Well, sure, I answer the call to become a cleric, and I am carrying weapons, but I'm really much more a traveler on a journey.
-What is your biggest weakness? (Think personal character flaws)
Isn't that a bit too personal a question to be asking someone you just met? I suppose I am a little cold toward non-elves. And I haven't been out of Mordant Spire long enough to become knowledgeable in the ways of the world.
-What is your biggest strength? (What seperates your character from another character with the exact same statblock.. in a positive way.)
I'm both compassionate and curious. Or would you consider those more weaknesses?
-What is the most enjoyable thing you remember doing?
When I was a child of but 50, there was a particular festival we had, and I was able to enjoy it with all my friends. Good food and contests.
-What is the most significant thing you remember doing?
When I decided to accept my destiny as a cleric of Findeladlara. I remember telling my parents. Their tears, and how they said they were proud.
-What do you fear?
I heard about some of the monsters in the area. Like I said, I'm not really an adventurer. To die so young seems too sad a fate to accept. I know everyone back home would miss me.
-How do you want to be remembered?
Hey! It's not like I'm going to die! I plan on living a very full life. I'll probably outlive your grandchildren. But if you want to remember me after I've left, remember this: flashes a friendly smile
-What is the line that you won't cross?
I promise I probably won't violate any of your laws. I would never purposely hurt someone, even a human. Well, maybe in self-defense.
-What do you see as future goals? Both long and short term.
What is this, a job interview? I just want to see the cathedral, enjoy the festival and get back home to return to my clerical duties.
Hey, Minkers. If accepted this would be my pbp game. I am fairly happy to let Adonnenniel achieve her goals. I'm certain once trouble pops up her compassion will move her to help in anyway she can. If you are interested, I also have some secret background I'd like to share with you while keeping the other applicants in the dark.
-Why are you at the swallowtail festival?
I don't see how that's any of your business. Er, wait, sorry, I guess that one is a pretty normal question for a border guard. Well, as it happens I am looking for someone. Do you get many elves in these parts?...

Either or. I'm not opposed to the DM working it in or being solo in that regard ^.^

In Azlanti:
"Adonny, what in Gozreh's blue skies are YOU doing in Sandpoint?!"

-Who are you: (A seemingly straightforward question. What is left when you take away your characters abillities, past and future actions? What is the core concept of this person?)
Are we not all an amalgamation of our experiences?  If not, then perhaps I am a collector.  I ever seek to encounter new curiosities, sensations, people, and events.  But I am certainly not just a hedonist.  The experience of life could not be complete, after all, without both the good AND the bad.
-What inspired/forced/motivated you to take on the life of an adventurer?
Despite the proximity to many fascinating Azlanti ruins, life in the Mordant Spire grew stale.  Avistan offers so much more potential, with its varied people and incredibly rich history.
-What is your biggest weakness? (Think personal character flaws)
I have often been chastised that I am too, shall we say, rash.  I just don't find that there is anything to be gained from sitting around doing nothing.
-What is your biggest strength? (What seperates your character from another character with the exact same statblock.. in a positive way.)
While my admittedly enormous intellect has served me quite well, I dont believe that it is my greatest strength.  That would be my ability to leap head-first into the unknown and suppress my trepidations while doing so.  As I just said, there is little to be gained by sitting around and doing nothing.
-What is the most enjoyable thing you remember doing?
He pats the wolf pelt on his shoulder. The first mug of mead after outwitting this beast and proving myself to White Estrid's meadhall?  Or perhaps... he digs around in his pack for a moment before withdrawing a small vial of yellow fluid which sparks and glows behind the glass as his fingers warm it.  Dancing under the stars in Katapesh well into the night with a stranger, and afterwards, my fingers guided by the glow on the ifrit's skin...no, life is too full of wonders to pick only one.
-What is the most significant thing you remember doing?
Personally, it was leaving the Mordant Spire behind.  I've never felt such freedom as when I took my skimmer and set course for Halgrim.
-What do you fear?
Stagnation.  Also, aboleths.  They are not to be trifled with.
-How do you want to be remembered?
Fondly, I suppose.  I have no particular desire for personal glory or anything of the sort, but if I leave behind a legacy it will likely be my writing.  I have been sending my travel journals back to the Mordant Spire.  If they serve as a source of knowledge or inspiration to others, I can be content.
-What is the line that you won't cross?
There are certainly limits to my ambitions to experience everything life has to offer.  I wish no harm on my fellow free-thinking beings, and I find it to be the minimum of conscientiousness to act towards them as I would to my friends or family.  Avistan can be a dangerous place though, and I will defend myself and my friends if necessary.
-What do you see as future goals? Both long and short term.
Varisia has a fascinating history, dating back to sinilar times as the ruins I explored as a child.  I intend to explore them, as well as the many and varied local cultures.  Afterwards, I suppose I will go where life leads me.  Cheliax is nearby and has seen drastic changes recently, which could be interesting.  I would like to see Absalom again as well, as my first visit was painfully brief.  And at some point I suppose I will return home, although I am in no rush to do so any time soon.
Despite Erynion's friendliness, wordliness and familiarity with many human cultures, he often views them as curiosities to be catalogued rather than necessarily people to make lasting connections with.  Think "another notch on the bed-post."  I'd like him to grow beyond that and find a place to call home, even if he doesnt necessarily settle down there.  Sandpoint may be the place.
-Why are you at the swallowtail festival?
I met a group of Varisians in Katapesh and traveled with them for a few years, which led me to Magnimar, where I heard about the festival.  They encouraged me to come, and to see the new cathedral.  They said Desna had guided me here.  I dont knoe about all that, but festivals have a way of showcasing the unique wonders of an area, so here I am.

As far as non-core stuff goes-He has the Darkvision racial trait from the ARG, the Archivist bard archetype from the APG, and the Unwitting Ally cantrip from the APG. He also has a few items from ultimate equipment and the arg, like fire ink, wandermeal, a waffle iron, cake mix, and maple syrup. So he can be the party cook. I'm pretty sure that's one of the basic combat roles, right?

As far as background goes, I've left it somewhat vague so other party members can potentially be worked in, but here's what Ive outlined so far:

Grew up at the Modant Spire before setting out for Halgrim in the Iron Archipelago of the Land of the Linnorm Kings. Traveled with a few of the Ulfen to Taldor as they left to become Huscarls for the royal house. Briefly stopped in Absalom on the way. Spent some unspecified timein Taldor, before leaving for Katapesh. Spent several years in Katapesh before traveling to Magnimar, and he just arrived in Sandpoint from Magnimar.

Connections to Adonnennial will be outlined in PM.

-Who are you?

I am not here to cause trouble Not trouble I can get caught for anyway I am just a sell-sword looking for work, that's pretty common in peace time you say? Heh that's actually funny, almost as funny as a guard baking under the hot sun while I look at him from the shade of a tavern.

-What inspired/forced/motivated you to take on the life of an adventurer?

Look beautiful, just because I have a soft spot for girls who work at inns doesn't mean you can just drag my life story out of me. Free of charge for one night if I do tell ya? I am out for revenge.

-What is your biggest weakness?

Are you the type that enjoys seeing a man pour his heart out or do I just bring out the sadist in you? Calm down honey, alright I'll tell ya Not like that will matter after I leave this town Sometimes...I get too focused on what happened in the past, that I don't pay attention to what's happening around me, I lose it and start doing things that won't benefit anyone, including me.

-What is your biggest strength?

I took your job didn't I? Didn't I? That means I'll get it done, I am a professional, that means I don't take jobs I don't plan to finish.

-What is the most enjoyable thing you remember doing?

Free dinner for a tale that'll make ya laugh eh sweetheart? I was ten years old, my dad and I were just walking around town when these guards start chasing him, we start running them all through the Shingles, even made'em crash into a couple of wagons, I remember one of them falling into a butcher's shop, when the sun set we were home free and looking at the sunset from the roof of my house.

-What is the most significant thing you remember doing?

No I wasn't always a sorry merc like you, I actually made it into Sable Company, I am liar? Of course and your just a well of honesty, guarded the lost heir of the old Chelixian empire riiiiight.

-What do you fear?

What am I going to do after I kill him....What was my room number again beautiful?

-How do you want to be remembered?

Why would I care how these people remember me, some of them will think hero and the rest will think monster, the funny part? They'll both be right.

-What is the line that you won't cross?

Its the funniest thing beautiful, ya see when someone pays me to kill a kid or a sweet thing like you, all I hear is 'please sir, I am sick of living kill me and take everything on me as your pay'

-What do you see as future goals? Both long and short term.

I told ya that I wanted to kill some bastard, so stop asking me what I want to do after that!

I want Karl to fail, lol I know unexpected, let me clarify; I want the man who killed his wife to end up dead, but I want it to be completely devoid of any feeling of victory, like having Karl finding the murderer dead thanks to a disease or some other person's blade, even if Karl did end up killing him I want it to seem a like a completely empty victory. This should make him take the question of what he wants to do in his life more seriously, which after much thought and contemplation should have him deciding to help with whatever it is the plot of the AP leads them to out of a sheer desire to prove once and for all that he isn't just some thug, its not even about whether his mother was right about him or not anymore, at this point he wants to prove it to himself, which in my opinion is a pretty selfish reason to be a hero, but that does fit him doesn't it? Also a sub goal would be to have him be completely wrong about Selina stealing his money, and that it had been a big misunderstanding.

Why are you at the swallowtail festival?

What festival?

Zander's submission!

Spoiler:

Who are you:
When I introduce myself to someone I tell them my name is Zander Byfellow, Sandpoint native and dabbler of all things old and new. Underneath that, I am humble cleric of Desna. I follow the light and ways that are presented to me and I try to enlighten the path for others as was once done for me.

What inspired/forced/motivated you to take on the life of an adventurer?
I would hardly call my life as one of an adventurer! Just recently I have decided that I would like to leave the limits of Sandpoint to see some of the greater sites in Varisia. But to go so far as to call myself an adventurer! Ha! That would be a bit of a stretch. One day I do hope to label myself as such so that I may have stories to tell the children.

What is your biggest weakness?
Zander is a survivor, so much so that he tends to stay with situations too long. No matter what happens, he always thinks that he will pull through. There are times that you should give up, runaway or regroup -- Zander is not quick to come to these decisions. He believes to a fault that Desna will always guide their path.

What is your biggest strength?
I believe that my greatest strength is I am reliable and dependable. When I give my word, I bind myself to keep the commitment no matter the cost.

What is the most enjoyable thing you remember doing?
Laughing with my father -- when he was home. Since he often left for days and sometimes weeks at a time to be a trapper in the surrounding woods, we was not always home with the family. When he was home (and not at the Hagfish) we would spend time together down at the docks fishing (where a fresh ale from the Hagfish was within walking distance). When we would fish together we would play games and make up stories about the fish we caught and often laugh until we cried. Those memories, I shall always cherish most dear.

What is the most significant thing you remember doing?
Saving the life of the smiths son, Jacob Korvut. Jacob and I are close to the same age and often spent many days and nights together as teenagers. One summers eve we were playing out near the Old Light above Junker’s Beach when Jacob slipped on a loose rock and fell off the edge of the cliff. The 80’ drop to the waters below did not enter my mind as I dove towards the cliff and was able to snatch his wrist before he was lost to the waters below. Of course, instead of being proclaimed a town hero we were punished for being out late near the Old Light. Still, I like to think of that moment as a beacon that there is something more within me.

What do you fear?
Snakes. Yes, I know it’s a cliché fear, but snakes terrify me! When I was a boy of eight I was out in the Tickwood with my father hunting one morning. He was with several of the men from town and they were out hunting boar. I was brought along as a reward for some recent chores I had helped around the house with. During the hunt I got separated from my father and I came face to face with a constricting snake. Oh, I was so terrified I froze hoping it wouldn’t see me! The snake of course definitely saw me, as dinner. Frozen, unable to move, I let the snake begin to wrap around me and begin to squeeze the life out of him. The entire time I was unable to move, completely petrified as if I had turned to stone. As the last coil began to squeeze the air from my lungs, one of the hunting party members found me and slashed at the snake until it released me. I’ve never been able to quite get over snakes, they have repeatedly haunted my dreams and driven me to avoid the Tickwood all these years later.

How do you want to be remembered?
[/i]I do not need to be remembered, I’m not one for fortune and glory. If I must be remembered, I suppose it would be that I was a proper servant of Desna and that I provided those around me with hope and joy. My goals are to help those that have fallen off their paths just as I once had. If I am able to guide one such soul to safety, I would like to be remembered for that service.[/i]

What is the line that you won't cross?
Betrayal. I do not proclaim to hold the law as the word of the Gods and pretend there is no gray area that must not sometimes be endured. However I cannot find it in me to understand what motivates mankind and other creatures of Golarion to turn on their word. Once you have given your word, be it in friendship, partnership or marriage, you should be bound by that oath forevermore. Once I’ve given my word that I will support someone, I will never turn my back on them regardless of the fame and fortune or death and dismemberment that would follow

What do you see as future goals? Both long and short term.
[/i]I do not believe I have lofty goals and ambitions as some. My only goals would be to have made a difference in this world before I pass to the Lady of the Graves. Fame, fortune and glory have never been something I have set out for. It’s true that I am planning to begin a life as an adventurer, but my long term goals are to increase my knowledge of the lands in Varisia and learn the many things that the lands offer. I’ve heard truly magnificent stories and legends of Golarion and I would like to see them for myself one day![/i]

What path do you want your character to take:
I would like to see Zander be faced with his fears and overcome them. His faith in Desna has been a solid substance in his life so far and has provided the path that he has taken to become the man that he is currently today. I think it would be fun if that somehow could be shaken or challenged so that he was unsure and was being “tested”. He is so sure of his path that he does not believe that this could currently be a possibility.

At the same time, in the long term I’d like to allow his breadth of experiences in Golarion to expand and for him to branch out and make more long-term friends. He mostly has acquaintances rather than friends and it would be great for him to build those relationships that last over a long period of time.

In the extreme long term, it would be great to see Zander transform from a student to a mentor. While this is not achievable anytime soon, before his life is out it would be great to see him back to the community some of the good that helped save him.

Why are you at the swallowtail festival?
To return home and celebrate and partake in the remembrance of the late Father Ezekiel Tobyn. You see, it was Father Tobyn that illuminated my life by showing me the path that chosen for me. With Father Tobyn’s guidance I embraced Desna and wholeheartedly set forth on my journey to become who I am this day. When I was lost and all of my days were dark I began to show interest in the Sczarni. Father Tobyn intervened and opened my eyes to the more wondrous moments in life. That and Sandpoint is my true home of course! Being a native of Sandpoint means attending the festival! Every one who anyone will be there! I wouldn’t miss this for anything!

Alright, this is Irnk's second character submission.

Background:
Born the bastard son of a Kellid whore & an unnamed foreign sailor, Vinccenso's mother named him after her Riddleport pimp to assuage the man's pride & keep him from simply killing or selling the child, at least until his adolescence when it became apparent that he had significant innate talent for the arcane arts...
Enough so that Amicus Falco, a retired Pathfinder & occasional mercenary pirate mage living in Riddleport offered him an apprenticeship.
An offer the pimp happily accepted as it meant, to his mind at least, one less mouth to feed.
Vinccenso found that life apprenticed to a Wizard agreed with him, though he didn't take to the discipline of Riddleport piracy any more than adequately at best; the constant travel, experience with different places & situations and the camaraderie of the sailors with whom he found himself constantly, spoke to him in ways life as the Bastard son of a pimp never did.
Particularly when he met Annalisse Mercuri.
The only child of a several generations long pirate tradition, Annalisse was almost everything Vinccenso wasn't; dutiful, disciplined, attentive to the consequences of her actions & the actions of those about her; the two of them clashed at almost every meeting. Only Vinccenso's clear utility & potential saved him from summary dismissal long enough for the two of them to recognize a mutual regard.
A regard shattered by his mother's unsolved murder & the 'turf war' between Riddleport's Overlord & the leader of the 'Cypher Mages', who had been trying to entice Amicus to join them since he had returned to the city of his childhood.
In the aftermath, Vinccenso decided he had had enough of Riddleport life & decided to see what the rest of Varisia had to offer.

Appearance:
At nineteen, Vinccenso is a lanky, loose-limbed individual, standing noticeably over six foot in height; with an insouciant manner & a smirk that even divine wrath might have difficulty removing.

Personality:
'I will go down with this ship. I will not put my hands up in surrender. There will be no white flag upon my door.
I'm in love & always will be.'
Dido

About those things & people Vinccenso cares, he cares deeply. At the same time, life as the bastard son of a murdered whore with no family, no loved ones & no real home has lead him to the conclusion that in the eyes of the world & the gods around him, he is nothing more than a commodity...
And a commodity does not offer anything of itself freely.

KyleS: I plan to discuss the last few details after the group has been established. And I have to agree with you, with these entries it's bound to be an interesting group.

V'thauus 'Thim'Diwanimi:I'm sorry, I meant to say "everything is clear."

Lukain Callinova: Thanks for the update. It makes sure that I know what I can expect later on in the game.

Master Dungeoneer: As I know you would be. ;)

Aliver Magravi: Cool character. Aliver seems like a good person to pal around with, what else could an adventuring group need? Heheh

Adonnenniel Orvir: Feel free to send those top secret background details through PM.

Forlorna:When the group has been established we'll see what works best. I'd be willing to hear what you had in mind and seeing how it fits the plots that I'm weaving afterwards.

Erynion Orvir:Thanks for outlining what non-core stuff you have used. That saves me on a whole lot of searching mid game. My compliments on your understanding of how elves think (or Erynion at least), that's some really cool stuff in the questionairre. Would you perhaps be able to share some of your interaction with Adonnenniel's player through a pm?

Karl Sarvo: A revenge driven character can be real fun when it is done right. It can be a real cliché when done wrong. I read through your character and I'm convinced Karl Sarvo is done right!

Zander Byfellow: I like the humbleness of this concept and of the person himself. A very 'mundane' character (so to speak) can be very interesting when in non-mundane situations!

Vinccenso Pruffi: From what I have read I like this character. Is there anything you could tell me about what motivates him or what his goals are? If not than that's okay, I'm just being curious.

Right now, Vinccenso's goals & motivations are pretty much just away. Away from Riddleport, away from the 'pointless' violence, betrayals & general skullduggery.

Of course, once he has managed to be away for a while, he has always been quite interested in the history of the Thassilon/Varisia & in fact, the reason why he is in Sandpoint right now is because his master & he had been frequent correspondents with a historian here, and that guy is just about his only 'close' friend left.
Also, his mother raised him in the 'Green Faith' as best she was able, so he has a deeper appreciation for Nature than is common for a Wizard.
Being a teenager, he is still more driven by his hormones than he would like to admit, so the chance to catch the eye of a cute girl will probably, consciously or not, sway him as well.

Hopefully, those answers were helpful, even if they were a bit vague. I will take another look at the questions later & see if I can't answer some more of them more directly.

Sovereign Court

Hmmm. At least your not starved for choice. :)

Hey Shane! It's been a while. Yeah I've been agonizing over those choices for the last two hours. We've got an army here that could conquer the whole of Varisia in an afternoon.

Based on the above, Minkers' open recruitment phase should be over. He, naturally, has the right to change that.

I see the following 22 character submissions:
Adonnenniel Orvir - Elf Cleric of Findeladlara - D
Aliver Magravi - Halfling Guide/Skirmisher Ranger - CS
Brinn Argentari - Human Sorcerer - A
Brunhin Rustbeard - Dwarf Inquistor of Cayden - CD
Cadeyrn - Human Fighter - C
Dr. Jedidiah Mor - Human Alchemist (Healer focus?) - AS
Erynion Orvir - Elf Archivist Bard - AS
Forlorna - Elf Dual-Cursed Oracle of Time - D
Gudada Purrun - Human Rogue - S
Jack Erizo - Half-Elf Mysterious Stranger Gunslinger - C
Karl Sarvo - Human Cad Fighter - C
Lukain Callinova - Human Carnivalist Rogue - CS
Morythine Ette - Dhampir Hungry Ghost Monk - CS
Nar'a - Human (?) Witch (Fortune teller) - AS
Olrun Daerdrencynn - Human (?) Transmutation Specialist Wizard - A
Satinder Coric - Aasimar Ranger - CS
Shane Teldean - Human Shielded Fighter - C
Steward Cavendish - Human Hunter - CD
V'Thamus Diwanimi - Human Thassalonian Evoker Wizard - A
Vinccenso Pruffi - Human Scroll Scholar Universalist Wizard - A
Vulorah Whitemane - Elf Bard - AS
Zander Byfellow - Human Cleric of Desna - D

So, that's 8 Arcane, 10 Combat, 5 Divine and 9 Skill character role fill opportunities, as I understand things. 12 (over half!) of the submissions I have marked as single role concepts. I can easily be wrong.

I don't envy Minkers' the choice. I don't really like my odds in a field of this size, either. My character seems too simple and limited by comparison.

Guess we'll all find out in a few hours.

For the majority of us who don't make the cut, I notice another RotRL thread recruiting right now:

The Rising Phoenix's game

Vincensso: The answers were helpful. Nothing in life is clear.

Hustonj:Being as I am still up (this is rather exciting on this part of the gm screen aswell) the outcome will probably be announced earlier than I mentioned in that post.

There is also good news for those that won't make the cut though; I think that after a month or two when the campaign of this group has started to live a life of it's own I'll also try running a second group. For that second group I won't open a new recruitment topic. I'll pm players that applied here to see if they're still interested.

Oops! 23 submissions, with 8 Arcane, 11 Combat, 6 Divine and 9 Skill role fillers available, then.

My apologies.

Okay, I'm not going to keep incrementing the counters at this point. I got 'em wrong.
