Hi there! have you ever wanted to battle a Tarrasque? Do you dream of taking down that Great Red Wyrmm? What about bringing down Elminster a peg or three? I know i have.
Well, now is your opportunity.
Here is what i propose: the party group vs the classic dnd NPCs in a battle arena simulation. This will be a battle to the death. no retreat, no surrender.
I am looking for 4 pcs, so choose your classes wisely.
character creation guidelines:
Starting level: 20
25 build points
Character wealth: 880,000gps
For a balanced approach, PCs that are built after 1st level should spend no more than 25% of their wealth on weapons, 25% on armor and protective devices, 25% on other magic items, 15% on disposable items like potions, scrolls, and wands, and 10% on ordinary gear and coins. Different character types might spend their wealth differently than these percentages suggest; for example, arcane casters might spend very little on weapons but a great deal more on other magic items and disposable items.
2 traits
max hps per level
anything from the pathfinder srd website is allowed. ( i only ask that you hyperlink feats and unique items/abilities to make it easier for me and other party members to find. If it is not hyperlinked, then it is not applied to your PC).
***exceptions to the anything rule***
no creating monsters or using the monster build rules.
no templates that adjust your starting level. ie: level 19 fighter with a +1 template of XXX, making the fighter a 20th level.
wishes and the manuals/tomes
according to the balanced approached, the wish spell and the manuals/tomes can be considered disposable or magic items. to make it simple, i am going to say that these items will be considered magic items, therefore you can apply up to 25% of your starting wealth towards these purchases.
i am sure that you will have questions, so feel free to ask. i will try to answer when i can, but i hope to get this rolling by next monday.

Hmmm, my off the top of my head vote:
* A witch seems handy, since her hexes bypass DR.
* Add three master summoners, to distract while the witch works her hexes.
Buffs: minimum, the party starts with greater invisibility and haste. Probably much more, focused on protecting the witch when she's in close range.
The witch wants a (invisible) mount, either from Leadership or one of the summoners' summons, so that she can fly in and out of hexing range.
Witch
R1: Evil eye (-4 saves), cackle
R2: Forced reincarnation, cackle
R3: If that doesn't work, Dire prophecy, cackle
R4: (end dire prophecy while creating) Ice tomb (-24 to save means Mr T gets +7 versus a DC~30 hex). Once it's entombed (and unconscious, though not paralized, since it's immume to paralysis) the party has lots of time to try to plane shift it away.
The master summoners' jobs are just to keep the witch safe and Mr T distracted with their pets.
Note, assuming time to prepare, lots of consumables make sense, e.g. scrolls of greater planar ally &etc.
(Not actually thinking to play it, but this is the first approach I'd consider. I trust there are other useful strategies.)

I'm curious. A couple questions:
1. When you say this is "arena" style, does that mean roll initiative and you are "x" feet away or can we prepare the battle field?
2. Alignment restrictions?
3. Will our equipment restart at the beginning of each battle? (i.e. expendables are returned)
4. Do characters with crafting feats get to take a discount on items they can craft?
5. Can we create unique magic items so long as we show our math?

Guns ok
Any class combo, including prestige
1) init is done differently. yes, if are able to, you can choose the battlefield
2) nope. Just remember that if you backstab a friend, she has 2 others to support her.
3)ill make that call if you you survive...if.
4)yes. Meet the dc and can take off 15% the total cost. For every point you exceed, you can another 1% off. Max of 30%
5)go ahead, but i have final say.

I modified the concept a fair bit. Ill get him added to a character sheet in a few minutes.. am out of food & drink.
L2 Gunslinger: Guntank
L5 Fighter: Tower Shield Specalist
L1 Sorcorer: Golden Draconic Bloodline
L5 Dragon Disciple
L7 Stalwart Defender
similar to my Klokk character from 3.x only adding stalwart defender in place of dwarven defender and gunslinger in place of 2 more fighter levels That and being gold instead of copper.

A Drunken Monk / Ninja could be amusing for this. Would the retraining rules for allowed for this? Basically, you've been around long enough to have taken some time to relearn some feats as more beneficial feats.
Although, I'm just being inquisitive. I have enough on my plate as it is at the moment.

Captain Fremont |

I would assume normal build rules apply. Which mean you should still normally choose your feats based off an order in which you could have legitimately acheived them. Such as, you still should't get Weapon Specialization before fourth level and the like. That means you have at least two feats slots that you could not have used to choose Weapon Specialization.
However, retraining would allow you to overcome this.

Gorden McDermitt |

<--- Klokk
Ohh yeah I assumed that as well im building gorden from 1-20.
I didn't think with the retraining you would be able to remove any feat that was a preq. to another feat. So like you still would need weapon focus at 1st/3rd to get spec at 4th. I still don't understand why would even need to retain, as there are so many other feats out there that you can take at 1st that are useful. ya know?
I did not take leadership, because I assumed it was the 4 of us vs whatever.. not an army as well. But if is desired I can take leadership to add to the size of our teams army.
I am of the golden bloodline, but if the rest of you opt to go evil I can be a red. I am LN but that's subject to change up till first gameplay post.

25,000 Gold for a +5 Armor/Shield
+2 Ghost Touch Mithral Tower Shield of Determination
+30000 Determination 5d8+20heal @ 0.
+3 Ghost Touch (works against incorporial)
+1000 Mithral
================
56,000 gold for this shield?
Or does that count as a +10 Shield @ 131,000?
Basically wondering does the determination count as a +5 ability or just the increased gold cost?
I have never made a magical item using PF rules.. at my home table we use 3.5 for the xp costs. So I am not sure exactly and dun wanna screw it up.

Bruhma |

hmmmm...an incorporeal Tarrasque... thanks for the idea, gorden!
when using the retrain ability, you cannot swap out a feat that is a prereq feat for another feat.
Id like to start this show next monday, if not sooner depending on submissions.
submissions so far:
arenel: eldritch knight
gorden: he has class.
interested:
ilmakis: summoner

GM Gabboge |

Frankly all of these monsters can easily be handled by a group of well built lvl 14 characters with enough imagination.
The game starts to break down at about lvl 12 and turns into a game of whoever gets the drop on the other guy wins mercilessly.
Anyway, there are a ton of spells to help whittle down the Tarrasque. The thing is remarkably weak against big holes.

Bruhma |

Eduldhur i must have missed your posting. Or confused u with another. Either way, im sorry.
Submissions
Eduldhur: zen archer
arenel: eldritch knight
gorden: he has class.
ilmakis/alamar; oracle
As for gabboge.. whats your point? You felt it necessary to inject your opinion into my recruitment? Now i could validate your posting if you would have said " this is so easy, ill make a 14th level guy and beat it". But you didnt. So i ask you kindly to go post your opinion in another part of the boards and let me recruit people who want to throw down with a tarrasque.

Gorden McDermitt |

Arenel How did you get the +5 Determination Forification(Light) Glamered Radiant Mithral Breastplate to work? I count that as a +5, +1 Fortification, +2 Glamered, +3 Radiant, +5 Determination for a +15 total.
This is what I am wearing +2 Righteous Mithril Full Plate of Speed
+4 for the +1 Mithril full plate of speed, +5 for righteous, +1 for the change from +1 to +2. Which is a +10 total.
So now I am confused.. Do the +x gold to base price Not count as a +# ability?

![]() |

I didn't know that.. I actually started a thread in rules questions about. apparently raw isn't clear and rai can go either way is what I found out. like I said Ive never made a magic item with PF rules.
That changes things a fair bit, ill have to redo my items to conform to that. Be some crazy arms/armor potentially.

In addition to an enhancement bonus, armor may have special abilities. Special abilities usually count as additional bonuses for determining the market value of an item, but do not improve AC. A suit of armor cannot have an effective bonus (enhancement plus special ability bonus equivalents, including those from character abilities and spells) higher than +10. A suit of armor with a special ability must also have at least a +1 enhancement bonus.
bolding mine
Nothing in this sentence said that special abilities without an equivalent enhancement cost could be add to the +10 cap.
Plus how could you decide that the special abilitie "My armor is the coolest" costing +100K is en equivalent +X ? By his price ? By its title ? No, you can't so you can't add special habilities without equivalent enhancement bonus to the effective bonus cap of +10.

![]() |

Several armor and weapon special abilities have fixed prices instead of a bonus equivalency. Do these abilities count toward the maximum +10 bonus in enhancements? No.
That said, if you’re using the guidelines for epic magic items (page 123 in the EL), any fixed-price abilities should count toward the 200,000-gp market-price "trigger" to determine if an item is considered epic.
That's the only answer to that question and its 3.5 not PF, but its as close as we have to clear RAW answer. RAI is split 50/50 There are not enough people that have actually played at level 20 either via an arena setting or from 1st for RAI to have a coconscious
I have marked my post in rules question for FAQ to get a clear ruling on it for pathfinder. Not just for this, but I am running three tables for the AP Wrath. My players Will be 20 for most if not all of the last book.. Sometime in January or Febuary the first group will be there. They are going to want to make things themselves, they already want to :D

Bruhma |

hey everyone!
sorry for no commo with the group these last few days, had an interesting thanksgiving and then had a weekend of a sick wife and kids. So yeah...

1d8 ⇒ 5
1d8 ⇒ 4
1d8 ⇒ 6
1d8 ⇒ 5 this is a reroll
1d8 ⇒ 1

Considering it would make the fort save on all but a 1 than he would not have be 1 rounded.. 1 crit would have changed that :)
