I'm curious what the manueverability of Cawin is. If it's not great then it would be a very handy advantage to the crew, while not being unbalancing combat to much. Especially if since he's a musketeer making shots while in flight could be really dangerous especially when you add in moving ships on the high seas and rigging, or vines and trees even. I don't think thats to bad. Plus if I were fighting us and I saw someone flying around with a gun I'd shoot him first. So I vote for the flying bullseye.

I think you're voting for flying bullseye just so you don't get shot at. ;P

Isn't that what I said? I'm a pirate not a paladin the less people shoot at me the better.

I just find it amusing we're not arguing whether he's got talent or skill as a character. We're simply voting in favor, so we have someone flying for target practice. lol

Well I think he has potential I'm curious to see how well he plays someone raised on a complete slave mentality. Especially since the sense of slavery would have to be reinforced mentally or else he would have flown off. So it would be really interesting to see how he grows and develops as a character starting from such a difficult place. Plus I'm less likely to get shot.

I'm not sure I feel I should be commenting on other peoples applications. If the GM makes a call, that's the call, whether I want someone else to take the heat for my character or not. I will say that a PC race with wings could definately trivialize a goodly number of encounters, which would make the game less fun for me. I'm not a fan of one or two super builds that can duo the game while you have 3-4 others who just kind of show up to see the story.

While that can be annoying Mezegis, I think that the 3-4 others would be likely to murder and loot those two seeing as we're pirates and glory hogs make targets.
I know it's not my call on his application, but I don't see why commenting on it out of character would be a problem, at least so long as it's constructive or silly, not negative or rude. Though if Cawin doesn't like it I will stop.

If it becomes a factor, I can give him the clipped wing Alternate Racial Trait, which would lower his flight speed from 60 to 20, his maneuverability from average to poor, and would answer the question of why he didn't just fly away when he was taken captive. It would make his ability to fly go from something he always does in combat to a useful trick that takes most of his concentration to pull off. It would also require reshuffling his stats, so I could take the Stretched Wings feat sometime later, which requires a strength of thirteen.

One other interesting thing, I had this really cool image of him taking flight by climbing and then diving off the top of the mast. Having clipped wings would actually make give a logical reason for that, given the difficulty he'd have of ascending.

That sounds really cool.

What's your opinion on psionic classes? I've got a Soulknife [Soulbolt]/Aegis bouncing in my head at the moment, probably either a ratfolk or a tiefling.

I will not touch a Psionic, sorry.

Sczarni

Eeeeewwwww psionics... So OP and so awesome

"Doc" Williams reporting for duty!

For GM Hills:

Three questions:
1. Is the "Rich Parents" trait ok?

I've got Doc with the "Rich Parents" trait to represent the success he's had as a doctor on various merchant ships and stopping through ports so far. The money spent from the trait is separate in case the trait needs to be replaced.

2. Can I use Brew Potion pricing on starting potions, or do I need to pay full market value?

This is also related to question three. As an aside, I've paid full price for all alchemical items in Doc's inventory.

3. Would it be possible to make an exception to the "No personal range" potions rule for the spell Poly-purpose Panacea?

This spell is brilliant flavor for an alchemist/doctor, and I would love to be able to hand out potions to cure hangovers, pains, etc.

Thanks!

1. Yes
2. Sure, why not.
3. I have no problems with that.

@GM Hills: I think I have everything updated now. Thoughts? Questions? Concerns?

I would like to note my interest in collaborating with any wizards or sorcerers to begin enchanting a ship at some point. I can build it you do the magic bits.

Terz would never know this but, coaral golem powered paddlewheels; epic win.

Dark Archive

Okay, Isabella's background has been expounded upon.

Background:
Isabella D'Rosini was born Quinteliasa, the daughter of an elven nobleman and his human wife. From birth, she was raised in the ways of nobility and seldom wanted for anything. But Isabella longed for the one thing that she could not have; a life of adventure. She thrilled to heroic exploits in stories read to her by her mother and wished more than anything to have an adventure of her own.

She was only 16 years old when she resolved to leave home and seek out a grand adventure. She left in the dead of night, leaving a note to her parents explaining herself and admonishing them not to worry. But worry they did, and spared no expense to find their little girl. Quinteliasa, for her part, made their task difficult. She changed her name to Isabella and went into the Chelish underworld, becoming a street rat. She learned the ways of thievery from unsavory sorts and paid for the knowledge in ways best not described here.

But when she was 20 years old, she was casing a storefront for a possible hit, when she saw him. He was tall, dark-haired, and incredibly handsome. For Isabella, it was love at first sight. Forgetting her intent, she revealed herself to him. His first reaction was not what she had hoped. The young sailor was repulsed by her wretched appearance and unsavory origins.

Drawing upon her noble background, Isabella cleaned up. She put on a lovely red dress that she had "acquired" a few days before and had intended to fence later. She washed her hair and put it up in a bun, and added make up to accent her features. Then, she found him at the local watering hole and tried again.

This time, the handsome sailor was smitten. He never recognized her as the street rat that he had turned away only a day before. It was his turn to fall in love with her. He remained in port and courted her through the winter, and in spring, they were wed. His name was Roberto, and she never told him of her deception or her past.

They lived happily for two years. Roberto spent much of his time at sea, and Isabella faithfully waited for her love to return. It was eight months ago that she received word of his abduction from the decks of the Widow's Breast during a pirate raid. At first, she was distraught and had no idea what to do. Then, a fire began to burn in her breast. Drawing on her training with the rapier as a girl, she sold their home and used the money to secure passage on a ship and begin her search for her lost love.

It was three months ago when she got a tip that he might have escaped slavery and was in the Shackles. Her quest led her to Port Peril, where she was investigating a known pirate watering hole, the Formidably Maid. She was quenching her thirst and getting a lead on her husband's trail when something hit the back of her head, and everything went black.

Sheesh, must've been half-asleep last night when I finished Doc up.

Fixed some math errors in his gear list and updated him to specify which potions he has available.

If you have a moment, let me know if everything looks good, Thanks!

Doc, you are good. Dig the character.

@ GM Hills: Hoping that Diabolito meets the standards set now?

Good to go, Diabolito.

GM Hills - I'm regretfully going to have to withdraw my application. Wish everyone the best of luck getting in.

Ok Jivo :(

How much time is left for this recruitment? Ive been having a hard time thinking of something good, but finally got an idea for a Magus Myrmidarch. Would grab a single level of Gunslinger for the piratey feel, and some fun with Ranged Spellstrike.

Just wanna be sure theres time before I go and get all excited.

Recruiting is opened for two more days, I will close things up and announce on Friday. As far as I'm concerned, any application before I say it's closed is fair game.

Just an FYI - I'm traveling this week, so I'm afraid I probably won't be able to follow-up on my first post in the "tavern thread." Didn't want to leave anyone "hanging." Sorry for the inconvenience. I wish I could participate in this aspect of the recruitment more - it's a lot of fun!

Bucket

The boy was thrust into this world as a by product of his mothers trade. He was given to an old crone, as a baby, who ran a seedy fortune telling business in Skuttlecove. The old hag, who referred to him only as boy, forced him to work and toil the days through while beating him severely for any transgression. She often made the boy steal money from the purses of her more intoxicated clients.

One night a slack faced sailor came to the crone's shop in a angry state. Claiming that she had stolen his money, he was about to invoke the right of vengeance upon her when she claimed that the boy must have stolen it. She brought the boy into the room and started beating the boy severely, screaming at him to tell her where the money was. During the beating something in the boy snapped. Anger, Red, Rage, Pain, Fear...

... When the boy came to he was standing over the contorted mess of the old crone's corpse with nothing but a broken and bloody mop bucket in his hands. After the shock wore off and the reality of what he had done set in, at the request of the sailor, the boy showed him where the old crone kept her valuables in exchange for a chance to work on a boat as a cabin boy. Later, when the captain of the ship inquired of the the 10 year old boy's name the slack faced sailor simply replied "Bucket"

Since that night 10 years ago Bucket has been sailing the shackles. Moving from cabin boy to a fairly competent sailor and a damn good brawler. Although well liked he is known for his darker barbaric rages from time to time.

Currently Bucket is waiting for a new berth. Hopefully on a ship where the crew can earn a bit more than what the tight holed merchants pay.

Please allow me to submit Ajani Ihejirika, a Vanaran Aquatic Druid, for your consideration. I've been playing in a S&S game with him for a while now, but unfortunately my GM had to shut the game down due to real-life complications. We're not terribly far into the campaign; I think we were closing in on the end of the first book.

I'm in the process of resetting him to level 1 and changing the listed equipment accordingly; that should be done before the recruitment closes. Regardless, I believe the background I wrote up for him should give you a sufficient idea of what kind of character I'd be playing.

Please let me know if he meets your approval! Thank you!

Going to cut recruiting off in about 17 hours, as it rolls over to midnight. As of right now, everyone has complete enough characters for me to make decisions about them. I can say for sure, it's going to be very, very hard to make decisions.

Wishing every one all the very best. (^_^)

The Exchange

Good luck, there are some very interesting characters in this pool.

I'd wish everyone good luck, but that doesn't seem very piratey, so instead I'll hope no one gets eaten by a shark.

*Splashes Sasha* (^_^)

I wish good sails and mighty loot upon my friends!

Are there people who've applied that are not involved in the discussion thread? I thought that was part of the application.

I've been tweaking Nissa as we roleplay in the tavern. I've increased her Charisma at the expense of her Wisdom, which what with the way things are going felt right. I hope this is a kosher move. I also want to thank GM Hills for giving us this rping opportunity. It certainly helped my get a better sense of Nissa, which will be helpful if I'm chosen.

Oh, I just discovered Dervish Dance. (I'm new at this. :-)) Is it alright if I change the Urumi for the scimitar and change Nissa's skills to work towards that feat? Having a higher Dexterity would be better for her any way since she doesn't wear armor?

Word of warning on dervish dance, you do not benefit of using Dex to hit until after you complete Dervish dance. I've seen a lot of people tank their Str for Dex only to fail to hit for the first 2 levels of their lives, which in PBP can be quite long.

The reason is, the Scimitar is not affected by Weapon finesse, and so it takes Dervish dance to grant you the "to hit with dex" aspect.

Oh, good point, so if it is kosher, it would behoove me to keep my Strength at least a 12, if not a 14.

That is a personal preference, and if you can tolerate it, there is no reason you can't survive with a 10 Str. I just know many new players see the coolness of the feat and miss that fine print so to speak. I know I did the first time I tried it out.

I was just making sure you knew what you were getting into before you made the change :D

I din't even realize I'd missed most of the tavern thread until just now. I will fix that.

Welcome t'ye! (^_^)

Nissa Alami? Not sure how relevant it is to your weapon of choice etc, But "Piranha Strike" will add a +2 to your damage, though I think at a slight negative to hit...Just a thought/suggestion.

The tavern is NOT required, it was a way to enjoy the recruiting process a little more, if you wanted and potentially set yourself apart from others. It could be the deciding factor between two characters that are both on the cusp, but one of them wowed me in the tavern and the other didn't or didn't participate and there was something there that pushed them above. I suspect there is at least one person that has not participated in the tavern at all that is going to get in and at least once that it will make the final decision.

Good luck to all, let me be clear, I haven't made ANY decisions yet, just spitballing.

Good to know I just wish I had noticed it earlier there is some great interaction going on in there.

Meep! I didn't notice the Tavern myself until just now. Will post in it as soon as I get home from work in a couple of hours.

Gah, I completely missed before that you had pointed out my missing trait. Sorry about that, I have it fixed now.

Well, this is awkward. I've been housesitting the last few days, and haven't been able to get online much, and I've just completely lost track of the tavern. *sigh*
