As Redstick does with Horgus, Morgrym talks to Anevia during the downtime.

How ye holdin' up lass? I could tell ye were intrigued by the though of help pushin' the demons outta the city. I just want ye ta know that we're all willing to do our part and take the city back. We'll get ye to yer wife and run these damned souls out, no matter what it takes, by Torag's beard I swear it.

Also during downtime, Caelus will again apporach Aravashinal, privately, on the arcane communities of Kenebares.

Spoiler:
"If you have a moment, Aravahsinal? I came to Kenebares, specifically, to join the crusades because my family - my parents - had based themselves from here. Jalren, my father, was a sorcerer, and my mother, Ulrya, a witch. Are the names at all familiar?

I was foster-raised from a very young age, but did see them occasionally. I knew, as a young boy that they had died, but I was told to seek out the order to which they had belonged. Do you know of a group called the Riftwardens?

During the downtime, Red Stick will approach Horgus.

"Your lordship, I just want to let you know that I think you've held up incredibly well, given the trying circumstances. Traveling underground like we have, trying to find our way to the surface, isn't easy on anyone, but it's especially hard for a noble who specifically has not been trained for hardship. Me? I'm a stable boy. I'm used to hard labor, horrible smells, and all that. But I've also taken care of many nobles' horses, maybe yours as well, and so I am keenly aware that the challenges they face are far different from my own. I know you're entirely out of your element down here. But I also want you to know that I recognize the stoicism and resolve you've shown in enduring this challenge. I have no idea what we're going to see when we get back to Kenabres, but I do know that they're going to require leadership up there. I'm sure you're going to be far better positioned to provide the guidance the city will need, thanks to these difficult experiences."

Horgus looks at Red and then replies with a smirk

"Leadership? Of course they need leadership from one as esteemed as myself. I Horgus Gwerm, proud scion of the Gwerm family have the the riches to rebuild Kenabres as needed but first we'll have to get back to the city. It's good that a peasant such as yourself recognizes such noble station as myself. Alas it falls upon me to show all of you what a Noble can do in such hard times. A leader indeed I am."

Sense Motive DC 15 (Red only):

You can sense that alot of this sarcarsm is directed at himself.

Sense Motive DC 20 (Red only):

There seems to be sadness upon Horgus as he speaks those words. A duty he has yet to be released from. Some kind of heavy burden but he has not given up yet.

Anevia is elated and now looks far better than before with the rest.

"I'm doing as fine as I can good dwarf, as long as I can get back to my wife and inform her of what you and yours have being doing. She too will be glad for your strongarm. I cannot imagine what the city will look like now. The news of the mongrelman offering their aid will only bring resolve and bring light of hope into those still alive. By the grace of Iomedae, with stalwarts like you by our side. We could maybe reclaim our city!!"

Her words seem to be spoken with such longing and hope, that it seems cruel to crush that spirit. However her leg is a grim reminder that her wounds are still serious and may make a difference in a life or death struggle.

Aravahsinal looks pensive for a moment before he replies.

"I'm glad to hear of one with a strong arcane background as yourself taking part in the crusades, however ask me no more of the riftwardens until we reach my destination. All I can tell you is I know of the organization you speak off and knowledge of members are restricted to all but a few."
He'll refuse to answer all other queries on the Riftwardens.

Sense Motive DC 15 (Caleus Only):

Aravahsinal knows more than he's letting on. It's almost certain that he knows more but is unwilling to share as he feels slighted. Possiblity because of the party siding with Horgus rather than him.

Red Stick smiles wryly at Horgus' answer, the points of his tusks showing themselves just for a moment. He pulls out the old, painted stick he wears around his neck, and points out, "Hey, you never know exactly how and why you'll be thrust into a position of power. See this? I was randomly chosen to be sold into slavery--well, actually, sold into sacrifice. I wouldn't be the man I am today if that hadn't happened. Disasters have a way of forging people anew."

I'm not exactly sure if we are moving down the path or not. If we are, Sarthonn tries to stay in front of the main group but behind the scouts. Also, Sarthonn wears the brooch around his neck, but he makes no particular attempt to hide or show it. I get that it is a plot device of some kind, but we didn't really account for that in earlier role play. You may need to GM-up somebody noticing it if it is important later.

Already on It Sarthonn
King Sull notices the Brooch and with a trembling hand and tears in his eyes asks for that brooch to be handed to him.
"That brooch!............... It used to belonged to one of my sons who left after a great quarrel between us. I held little hope that he'd return for I have had no news of him since he left. I gave his this brooch before he left and now seeing this I know that he perished. I must ask that you give this to me and in return I shall gift you a weapon passed down from my ancestor's time."

Upon being given the brooch, King Sull retrieves a beautifully crafted morningstar that sheds light and has the symbol of Iomedae upon its shaft. It's design is certainly ancient but looks as if it was freshly forged.

Once the party is ready. We shall proceed to the nest section.

Naravash shakes his head at the arrogance Horgus persistently oozes, inwardly wondering if the fop would ever prove brave enough to admit his debt to the group. He imagines a city run by Horguses and it only takes a few moments before his shoulders slump in sadness, the tiefling suddenly thinking Kenabres would be better off an eternal ruin than rebuilt and run by Horgus Gwerm and his ilk.

Troubled by his dark thoughts and frustrations, the tiefling wanders throughout the mongrelman settlement alone, wondering on the future, fate, and the futility of effort.

Male Half Elf Fighter 2 HP 26/26; AC 16, T 10, FF 16; CMD 15; F +5, R +0, W +0 (+2 v Enchantment, +1 v Fear); Init +2, Per+5

Back with King Sull.....

Sarthonn nods solemnly when King Sull brings up the brooch, "Do accept our condolences for your son's loss, King. I lost both of my parents some time ago under similar circumstances. "

Sarthonn takes the brooch off and gently hands it to King Sull, trying to be calming. Then he volunteers some additional info, "While wandering the tunnels, we never cam across any other people of Neathholm until we saw Lann and Cern and Kern. We will keep a watch for your son while we continue to work toward the surface. Might there be other ways we could recognize him?"

Maybe extra discussion here? Not sure.

After finishing the audience with King Sull, Sarthonn leaves the king's dwelling and leans against another wall, thinking of the loss of his parents and their similarity to King Sull's son. He takes a long drink from his flask to avoid the pain. You could have some in-game penalties for being buzzed/drinking if you want.

Sovereign Court

King Sull shakes his head at Sarthon's question.
"It's not possible. I know that despite our differences, he treasured this for it is a gift I created with my own two hands. I thank you for your offer."

Sarthonn does find to his delight that the town actually has very ancient methods of brewing but they refused to share their secrets. Their ale is equal to hundred year old age ale.

The town is simple but the wares are displayed with pride and are all of ancient design and carved with ancient runes not seen often in your time. Just like the morningstar now at his side.

Making your way from the city to the 'Traitor's lair', you see barricades made of heaped loose rocks and wooden boards bisect this cavern. Beyond the barricades, a wooden screen covers the lower half of a tunnel mouth. You spot 2 mongrel men in the distance but they do not seem to have seen you.

Razul pauses. "Do we take the king's word that these are hostile, or must we give them the opportunity to parlay ourselves? What is to become of us if we assume evil where there is none? I have the scale; I can disguise myself as one of them and approach them. If there is evil, then they will attack and show themselves as such." Razul looks distinctly uncomfortable as he speaks of the assumption of evil.

"I've heard of powerful Iomedaens who can see into the hearts of men, but it is not an ability I myself possess." The lithe tiefling hedges then, rubbing his chin in thought. "But you make a good point. If you or another are willing to use the scale to learn of their nature, then I think you should."

Male Human (Sarkorin Kellid) Summoner 3, AC 14/10/14, Hp 21/21, Init +0, Frt+1,Rfx+0,Wil+4

Male Half-Orc Rogue 2: (HP 21/21, AC 16 FF15 T11, F+2 R+4 W+0, Init+1, Per+5, Evasion)

Red Stick raises an eyebrow. "Perhaps, but what does 'one of them' look like? If they don't recognize you, wouldn't they just assume you are a Neathholmer and attack anyway?"

HP 20/20; AC 15, T 11, FF 14; F+4, R+1, W+7; Per +11 low-light
