Male Halfling Bard 4

"Happen we can all sing as well. Everyone know Shenandoah?"

Greylan looks dubious, "Well... you're the musician but I don't know if sea shanties will help much..."

"So, are we heading for the source or not?"

Male Halfling Bard 4

"Don't have to be sea shanties, Greylan," explains Healaugh patiently.

"Just wanting to keep music out of heads like. Thought most of lads might know them is all."

He looks dubiously at the elf. "Mebbe not. Some other song we all know. Better make choice. Reckon we need to be going in there."

"Well, I'm with you. We have to find out what happened to those poor people as soon as we can."

Male Human Ranger 3

"Know Ten Drrunken Nights, A Willin Lass Es A Gude Lass, and Dirrge of Black Fearrgal", Nechtan offers hopefully.

Male Dragonborn Paladin, Level 4

"I could sing you the draconic opera Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, but it lasts for three weeks, you wouldn't understand it, and you need a large towel at the end" said Ddraig, mournfully.

"Alternatively, I could intone the draconic ballad of Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenua kitanatahu, but it involves a lot of shouting and thigh-slapping, and to do it properly you need to be heavily tatooed."

"I can, however, see no alternative but to locate the source of the music and silence it forever."

Male Halfling Bard 4

Healaugh sighs. "Best be Ten Green Bottles then, like always. Tain't musicality that matters here lads, tis blocking ears to mournful enchantment."

Spoiler:

It's a rubbish plan really, but are we going to try this? Translated into non-Healaugh for ease, the idea was that we'd split into pairs (Ddraig and Ynyr, Greylan and Darvyl, Healaugh and Nechtan). That makes sure each pairing has a light source of some kind.

Then move around the hill and all approach from slightly different directions on a signal - Greylan can use Ghost Sound for that. Healaugh makes as much hurdy-gurdy racket as possible while we all sing like mad to drown out the beguiling music and see what's up.

It worked for Odysseus.

** spoiler omitted **

Spoiler:
Didn't it take Odysseus years to get home? I mean, I'm in this quest for the long-haul, but a dragonborn has to draw the line somewhere!!!

If I don't hear to the contrary within the next few hours, I'll assume you are going with Healaugh's plan. I'll sketch out a map of the hillside in any case. Thanks short-stuff, split the party in three!

Male Dragonborn Paladin, Level 4

I'm happy to go with Healaugh's plan.

Now, which direction are Shaggy and Scooby going in? I'm with Daphne, right?

Male Human Fighter 3
Ddraig Goch wrote:

That would make you Fred -- are you sure it's worth it?

Going with the plan. La-la-la-I-can't-hear-you

Male Human Atrificer/3
Ddraig Goch wrote:

Who are you calling Daphne?

Male Human Atrificer/3

Ynyr was going to propose singing 'My love is a tender rose' but, fortunately kept quiet about it. It would not have been loud enough.

"Now are you sure that you think that this is going to work? Ten green bottles you say? Well, at least we all know that song don't we? I don't suppose it will matter if we are not all in the same key now will it? And what, do you say is the signal going to be that we are to be listening for?"

Ynyr casts a dubious look and Healaugh and then Ddraig who will accompany him. "You will try to be quiet now won't you?"

Is nobody going to pour cold water on this plan? The concept of six brave adventurers singing Ten Green Bottles while charging up a hill accompanied by a hurdy-gurdy has novelty value I'll admit. But will it strike fear into our enemies?

Ynyr the Artificer wrote:

"I presume this is a new variety fo quiet, involving singing!" said Ddraig, quizically. "I will do my best, but this armour isn't really made for sneaking ..."

I love this plan! We've got them right where they want us! If we play this right, we can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!

Male Human Ranger 3

Hmm... looks like it's up to the heavily tatooed, lime-haired one to be the reasonable one.

"Enough jabberrin! Time fer sengin!"

"When I came hame on Firstday night,
As drrunk as drrunk cude beee!
I sawr a horrrse ootside the doorr,
Wairr my ol horrse shude be.
So I calls me wife an I says to her....
"

Nechtan looks around expectantly...

That didn't go well.

Male Human Ranger 3

Getting no response, Nechtan sighs and starts again.

"Ten grreen bottles hangin on yon wall,
Ten grren bottles hangin on yon wall,
And if one grreen bottle be rraided by Angus McCall,
Then nine grreen bottles hangin on yon wall.
...
"

You realise that there are only really two clear routes you can take as much of the hilltop is covered by trees and undergrowth densely packed. You can go either west of this central copse or east of it. The oni flew to the north-east You could also make your way centrally through the undergrowth Difficult terrain granting concealment to all, total concealment in places.

Male Halfling Bard 4

"Grand singing voice you've got there Nectan."

Surveying the landscape. "Seemingly we're only needing two group. Happen Ynyr might want to join Nechtan and mesen and Ddraig go with Darvyl and Graylan. Careful like. Lands a tad tricky from looks of things."

If we can go east or west, then suggest Greylan/Darvyl/Ddraig go east and Nechtan/Ynyr/Healaugh go west. No particular reason, just being decisive.

Male Human Ranger 3

While Nechtan's singing is deficient in accuracy in melody, lyrics, and mathematics, it is blessed with an abundance of enthusiasm and volume.

Both groups will now be put in spoilers. Until the groups re-join please continue to post in spoilers for your group. If you wish to communicate with one another, you may find it difficult to impossible given the terrain and distance, oh and the singing.

Nechtan/Ynyr/Healaugh

Spoiler:
You make your way through a narrow passageway of trees into a more open area, north of where you fought the oni. This peaceful hilltop grove has been enveloped with a scene of unimaginable horror. Dozens of bodies are scattered among the trees. The faces of the corpses are frozen in masks of absolute terror, while the bodies have been horribly mutilated. Discarded limbs and heads, some with the spines still attached, are thrown haphazardly about, many stuck in the branches of the nearby trees. Still you feel yourself being dragged to the east now.

Ddraig/Greylan/Darvyl

Spoiler:
You walk north-east of where you fought the oni, skirting the steep edge of the hill, your feet drawn ever onward to an eerie grove of dead and dying trees. It is full of shadows, rotted moss, and fungus growing on branches. A foul-smelling stagnant pool at the centre of the grove is choked with hundreds of dead rats, pigeons and other small animals. The small bodies cover the ground forming a squelching, fuzzy carpet of gore. The skinned carcasses of sheep, cows, and goats hang from the branches of trees.

Male Human Atrificer/3

Fabes/Healaugh/Nechtan

Spoiler:

Ynyr makes a gallant effort not to gag and just about succeeds. He makes sure he is as close to the others as is practical and his face takes on a grim expression.

"This is what we must stop must we not? If the music does this, then you must play your hurdy-gurdy for all it is worth, no?"

"Do you think we should pretend to be influenced by the music when we meet who we meet when we meet them?"

He gets ready to join Nechtan in song, while considering what he might do when they reach the source.

Ynyr is wary and on the lookout as he is well aware that they probably do not have the element of surprise on their side.

Male Halfling Bard 4

Fabes/Nechtan/Ynyr

Spoiler:

Repressing his own gag reflex, Healaugh sings on, changing the words to suit his mood

One big oni, hiding on a hill
One big oni, hiding on a hill
And if one big oni should fall beneath our will
That's one less oni, hiding on a hill.

"Tha's in right there Ynyr. Got to be putting stop to this." The halfing sounds unusually grim.

Male Human Fighter 3

Ddraig/Greylan/Darvyl

Spoiler:
Daryvl nervously manipulates his weapons. He wasn't much into the singing to begin with, and now mutters, "I told you we should have waited for morning."

Ddraig/Greylan/Darvyl

Spoiler:

Greylan points to the other side of the horrific grove. Tall humanoid shapes can be seen advancing, "Um... ah... we're not alone."

Ddraig and Darvyl can only dimly make them out but it seems to be the oni and two verbeeg. The singing dies away.

Initiative please. Moonlight grants concealment to the oni and the verbeeg from Ddraig and Darvyl unless their opponent is in the 4 square radius of Greylan's light spell. Likewise the Ddraig and Darvyl have concealment from the verbeeg unless the verbeeg are in a light source radius. Greylan and the oni can see normally. Map coming up later.

Nechtan/Healaugh/Ynyr

Spoiler:
The singing fades away.

Male Human Fighter 3

Ddraig/Greylan/Darvyl

Spoiler:
"Found them," he yells. Init (1d20+6=10)

Ddraig/Darvyl/Greylan

Spoiler:
>>>>MAP<<<<

Waiting on Ddraig for Initiative, but at the moment it's:
Cyrollane the Oni 24
Greylan 14
Darvyl 10
Verbeeg 8

The yellow area is the area of Greylan's light spell.

Healaugh/Ynyr/Nechtan

Spoiler:
To the south through the trees, you hear Darvyl bellow "Found them!" in his mixture of fear and bravado.

Male Halfling Bard 4

Fabes/Ynyr/Healaugh

Spoiler:

"Join them shall we?"

Holding his lamp high, Healaugh heads towards the sound of Darvyl's voice.

Male Human Atrificer/3

Fabes/Healaugh/Nectan

Spoiler:

"They are found! Now we will put a stop to this. It cannot carry on."

Ynyr follows Healaugh in the direction of the shout.

Male Dragonborn Paladin, Level 4

Sorry for the delay - I've been acquiring a trailer, and injuring myself quite often!!!

Spoiler:
http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1930620/ - Initiative (1d20+1=8)

Nice to see Ddraig in sparkling form, as usual!

Healaugh/Ynyr/Nechtan

Spoiler:
Please roll initiative. I will add you to the map the others have, and then merge the groups.

Ddraig/Darvyl/Greylan

Spoiler:

The dark brown area (corpses) counts as difficult terrain as do the green areas (woodland). The woods grant cover and concealment to those inside.

The oni strides through the hideous scene and laughs his horrid laugh, "Now you shall see the power Cyrollane commands!" he cries. He opens his fanged jaw and the mist of sleep pours forth again over you all. Greylan says, "Look, that tree! It's moving!" as indeed one of the dead, twisted trees flexes its branches and its roots pull it up and across the ground with terrible purpose... Its form wavers...

Beads of sweat form on Greylan's elegant forehead as he concentrates. "Feel my power, fiend!" he says with determination. Unfortunately , his magic veers wildly as the oni laughs. More magic missiles stream towards the creature but he easily dodges them. Greylan passes out from the strain.

17, 27, 26 vs Will against Darvyl, Ddraig, Greylan. You are all dazed. Greylan - magic missile misses oni, spend AP, magic missile misses again. Failed save. now unconscious. Daryvl's turn. Map to follow.

Male Halfling Bard 4

Fabes/Ynyr/Nechtan

Spoiler:

Keeping his hurdy gurdy in tune slows Healaugh's reflexes.
Init (1d20 2=7)

Ddraig/Darvyl/Greylan

Spoiler:
[url=http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i57/Fabes_photos/twistedgrove-1.jpg]>>>>MAP<<<<[/url

Male Human Ranger 3

Healaugh/Ynyr/Fabes

Spoiler:

Of course, Nechtan accompanies his companions, and stops singing when the music stops.
Initiative (1d20+4=21)

Male Human Fighter 3

Ddraig/Darvyl/Greylan

Spoiler:
Not being entirely insane, Darvyl sheathes his shortsword, grabs up the unconscious Greylan (AP), and prepares to flee. "Ddraig, fall back!"

Save vs daze/sleep (1d20=15)

Darvyl/Ddraig/Greylan

Spoiler:
Verbeeg move. Throw javelins. Miss Ddraig and Darvyl. Draw glaives.

The two verbeeg advance on the party, throwing their spears. Greylan's swinging light must cause distracting shadows as their shots go wide.

Ddraig's turn.

Healaugh/Nechtan/Ynyr

Spoiler:
You make your way as fast as you can to what is now clearly the sounds of battle. You can hear Darvyl calling out something in panic.

Male Halfling Bard 4

Fabes/Ynyr/Nechtan

Spoiler:

"Reckon our lads are in spot of bother." Healaugh picks up the pace, holding his lantern high to show the way.

Male Dragonborn Paladin, Level 4

Ddraig/Darvyl/Greylan

Male Human Atrificer/3

Haelaugh/Nechtan/Fabes

Spoiler:

"Right, we should fix them then, shouldn't we?"

Off with his friends to join the fray.

Initiative to the fray! (1d20+2=5)

Ynyr likes to consider his options before diving in to any fray.

Ddraig/Greylan/Darvyl

Spoiler:
Without wishing to be a killjoy - you had your sword out when I last checked. Sheathing that and taking out the javelin are 2 actions on their own. Sorry. Care to try something else? I'll keep the attack roll for the next attack you make. How's that?

Male Dragonborn Paladin, Level 4

Ddraig/Greylan/Darvyl

Spoiler:

Arse! OK, as my one action I'll sheath my sword - but next time ...

Ddraig/Nechtan/Darvyl/Greylan

Spoiler:
The oni's strides towards Darvyl and claws at Greylan's slumped form. 15 vs AC hits as Greylan takes -5 to all defenses for being unconscious. 14 psychic damage to Greylan and oni heals 10hp. Fine mist issues from Greylan's mouth and the oni breathes it in, looking revitalised. The tree's branches shiver and Greylan's body convulses and he murmurs, "Ughhh the leafless tree..." before his body slumps alarmingly. 29 vs Will. 22 psychic damage to Greylan. Greylan is now at -5 and has failed a death save.

Nechtan arrives to see Greylan slumped and unmoving. {ooc]Nechtan has a minor action he can still spend or indeed another action as well if he has an AP.[/ooc]

>>>>MAP<<<<

Healaugh/Ynyr

Spoiler:
You can hear the oni's horrible laughter and a sound like wind through branches...

Cyrollane the oni
Nechtan
Tree
Greylan
Darvyl
Verbeeg
Ddraig
Healaugh
Ynyr

Male Human Ranger 3

Fabes/Ddraig/Darvyl

Spoiler:

Nechtan yells, "This one is mine! Destrroy yon trree!", then charges the oni.

Hunter's Quarry. Action Point for Charge to Q14. Charge attack with handaxe vs AC (1d20+8=16, 1d6+4=9, 1d8=1) Looks like a miss, but if it hits, activate the daily power on the axe cold damage (1d8=3) and oni is Slowed til end of Nechtan's next turn.

Not sure if Healaugh and Ynyr could hear what Nechtan said. Fabes, another description of the current situation would help we latecomers (ie. who is wounded, terrain, etc).

Ddraig/Greylan/Nechtan/Darvyl

Spoiler:
Will do, Nechtan. In brief the dark brown ground is covered in animal bodies. It and the trees are difficult terrain. Your attack missed, I'm afraid. Darvyl's turn.

Ynyr/Healaugh

Spoiler:
You hear Nechtan yell something about a tree...

Male Halfling Bard 4

Fabes/Ynyr

Spoiler:

"Odd that."

How close are we? Near the map yet, or not?

You'll arrive on your initiative with a minor action left to use, and of course if you have an AP, you can use that.

Male Human Fighter 3

Darvyl et al.

Spoiler:
Darvyl lugs Greylan's unconscious form out of reach of the Oni.

Not entirely sure of the color-coding -- can I get to V11 in 4 squares of movement? That direction, anyway -- double move, slowed.

Everyone except Healaugh and Ynyr.

Spoiler:
You definitely can get there. Sorry, the 'light radius' marker kind of obscured the colours of the ground. Dark brown is difficult terrain as is green.

Darvyl carries the unconscious elf away from the fray, and Nechtan's attack is swatted aside by the now gloating oni. Nechtan can see that the grove is covered in animal corpses and that a dark, leafless tree is somehow moving! Nature check as a minor action, anyone? Verbeeg with glaives are approaching the party.

"Tell your gods that Cyrollane sent you to them, little man!"

Ddraig's turn.

>>>>MAP<<<<

Male Dragonborn Paladin, Level 4

Spoiler:

Right! Utilising the previous roll ...

Ddraig withdraws a javelin and hurls it at the oni

http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1932627/ - Basic ranged attack with javelin (1d20+7=23, 1d6+4=10)

"You will not flee from us again, coward" snarled Ddraig.

>>>>MAP<<<<

Healaugh and Ynyr's turns - you each have a minor action left, as you are assumed to have double moved to get here. All dark brown ground squares (which will be described when you can see it better) and the green woodland squares are difficult terrain. The woods also provide cover and concealment.

Block 1
Cyrollane the oni

Block 2
Nechtan
Tree
Greylan

Block 3
Darvyl
Verbeeg

Block 4
Ddraig
Healaugh
Ynyr
