2014 Art Review

Wednesday, December 31, 2014

As we close out 2014, I wanted to end on a high note and give you one last year-end blog. I went to our Managing Art Director Sarah Robinson and Senior Art Director Andrew Vallas to get some help rounding up some favorite illustrations from the past year. Seeing how great their selections were, I also asked various members of our editorial team to pick a few of their own favorites to add. So here are some of our best illustrations from 2014!

Let's start off with some covers! The above are selections were made by Andrew, Sarah, and Developer John Compton.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Monster Codex Illustrated by Wayne Reynolds, Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Lost Treasures Illustrated by Igor Grechanyi,
Pathfinder Module: Plunder and Peril Illustrated by Kiki Moch Rizky, and Pathfinder Player Companion: Alchemy Manual Illustrated by Kerem Beyit

Monsters and gods are up next! The above selections were made by Andrew, Sarah, and Designer Stephen Radney-MacFarland

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Monster Codex Illustrations by Subroto Bhaumik and Jason Rainville, Pathfinder Adventure Path #80: Empty Graves Illustration by Johan Grenier,
Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Occult Mysteries Illustration by Ralph Horsley, and Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Gods Illustration by Yu Cheng Hong

Brigh and Zyphus are two of the many Golarion deities featured this year. The above selections were made by Adam Daigle and myself.

Pathfinder Adventure Path #86: Lords of Rust Illustration by Johan Grenier, and Pathfinder Adventure Path #89: Palace of Fallen Stars Illustration by Matias Tapia

And to round out this art blog, some portraits of deities, monsters and important characters of 2014!
The above selections were made by Andrew, Associate Editor Judy Bauer, Editor Ryan Macklin, Developer Rob McCreary, and Managing Editor James L. Sutter

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Monster Codex Illustration by Tim Kings-Lynne, Pathfinder Adventure Path #80: Empty Graves Illustrations by Ekaterina Burmak,
Pathfinder Adventure Path #84: Pyramid of the Sky Pharaoh Illustration by Johan Grenier, Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Gods Illustration by Maichol Quinto, and
Pathfinder Tales: The Redemption Engine Illustration by Eric Belisle

What was your favorite piece of Pathfinder art from 2014?

I always love it when I see Raven Mimura's art!

These are all excellent and deserving of the spotlight, but if I had to pick one, it'd be the goblins in the stable from Jason Rainville. While skimming through the MC, I had to stop and stare for a while. It's just about perfect, on multiple levels. Happy New Year, and many more to come! =]

Excellent picks I can't disagree with.

If I had to rank them, my favourites would be the Shelyn taking Zon-Kuthon's glaive piece, and the illustration of Brigh.

Wait a minute, are those "Outer" Dragons? I ask as they seem to be fighting in space (also the Red Dragon looks suspiciously unlike the official Paizo design). Other than that, awesome artwork.

One question though Mark, could you let the staff know we'd all love to see artwork for ancient metallic dragons (or artwork for ALL the different breeds of Dragon). Have a happy new year. ^_^

I personally love the visions of WAR book. Happy new year to all and a great 2015!

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Now THIS, as I recall, was the whole reason for Mark to get a job at Paizo in the first place. Thanks for the art Mark, and best wishes for a fantastic new year.

Nice! Happy New Year Mairkurion!

Thanks for putting this blog together, Mark. It looks awesome!

Perfect! I needed a desktop background for my home PC, now Here Be Dragons!

Fave Paizo art of the year? The one by Eric Belisle. Scratch that, ALL the ones by Eric Belisle. Him and Steve Prescott are keeping graphic colors and dynamic poses alive and kicking in games art today.

I always enjoy Pathfinder art! Thanks Mark!!
I would like to see some pictures of places like the Iadenveigh, page 62, adventure path #87, the Torch, page 62, adventure path #85 and others.

Love the picture with the goblins in the buring building. Fantastic piece.

Zyphus is amazing!

My favorite artwork was the sandman in the first mummy ap. But the assassin bug is perfect too

That Shelyn/Zon-Kuthon piece is one of my very most favorites in the world.

Yeah that is a good piece as well. I just don't like the way the glaive is constructed.

I always thought the red dragon depicted in Occult Mysteries was strange and did not resemble any of the red dragons in Pathfinder RPG (because of the horns), but after Dahak was revealed in Inner Sea Faiths, I suppose that one wasn't just a red dragon, but the Sorrowmaker himself (again, because of the horns).

We had a picture of Apsu (in his silver dragon avatar) and his wayward son, the dragon gods fighting each other, and I wasn't aware of it? I can't forgive myself for noticing it just now... Or am I misunderstanding something?
