Gah! That's where I saw that the first time around, thanks Tilly!
GM, one more change to my character sheet to show Athletics as Favoured. After some feedback from Tilly, I'm trying to decide on my skills as a Burglar. Can I ask your advice on this? I don't really see Jotun as sneaking around or anything, so Stealth might not be the best bet. I see him more as brash and up front about his treasure hunting. Hey, Han Solo didn't like all that 'sneaking around' either!
So that said, as far as lockpicks or 'getting into where he's not supposed to go' is concerned, would that be Craft or Lore? I've got no points in Craft so that'd be my least favorite idea, but I've already got a point in Lore, and could easily boost that skill if that'd work just as well? What do you think?
Bain, maybe a bag of gems or something along those lines (a bribe) for Persuade?

Belle Boffin |

@Belle: You rolled a 12 - the Gandalf rune! :)
Regarding the Earrings of Pearl, it's either Awe or Courtesy and it depends on how you're using the earrings.
If, for eg, you're using the earrings to make an impression of wealth and power, to evoke respect and instil wonderment and admiration (as a status symbol) then the bonus would go to Awe.
If, for eg, you're using the earrings to make a good impression on a host or when receiving guests (like you're getting dressed up/making an effort as a sign of polite address) then the bonus would go to Courtesy.
But do I need to commit to one use?
It’s a tough call. Courtesy is common and my TN for heart is best. Awe is favored with zero d6, so a part of me wants to boost a favored skill.

Jotun "Son of Jungarr" |

My guess is that you can use it with one or the other, given the circumstances as Tilly described.

A brick? A sharp stick? :-)
How about a signet ring or maybe a torc that shows the favor of the King Under the Mountain?
I could also see Jotun's suggestion of a bag of gems (small gems). Either might be applicable in certain situations (bandits might not care about the ring and proud lords might not care about the gems.)

I could see Craft. Despite the example, Lore is a stretch. That was a specific example of a lock with some historical precedence -and- Lore was only used in the assist. I'm okay with either Stealth or Craft.

GM Tarondor |

But do I need to commit to one use?
Yes. The rule permits you to associate your useful item with only one skill.
My guess is that you can use it with one or the other, given the circumstances as Tilly described.
Nope. One skill only. -AND- the GM has to agree that the particular use is apt to the tool. Lockpicks used to boost stealth aren't going to help if you're trying to hide behind a barrel, for instance.

Jotun "Son of Jungarr" |

Sounds good. Think I'll stick with Stealth then, if that works? Could come in handy with other Burglary-type situations - moreso than Craft, I'd think.
And with that, I think I'm done tinkering with my character sheet unless I've got a mistake on there.

Since I think not everyone has a copy of the rules, I want to remind everyone that although we are simulating TOR dice with d12's and d6's, they're not the same.
The TOR "Feat die" has numbers 1-10, plus the Eye of Sauron and the Gandalf Rune. The Eye of Sauron (11) is considered to be a "0" and there are rare times when it can indicate a disaster of some sort. The Gandalf Rune (12) is an automatic success.
The TOR "Success dice" (d6's) has the usual numbers 1-6, but 1-3 are shaded differently. This is to show that, when you are Weary, those numbers are equal to "0". In addition, the "6" contains a Tengwar rune, which is a reminder that (if the overall roll is a success) a 6 indicates a superior degree of success.
♦ If a single (Tengwar Rune) was scored, then the Player-hero’s accomplishment was out of the ordinary (a great success).
♦ If two or more (Tengwar Runes) were scored, the result was absolutely exceptional and memorable (an extraordinary success).

Very good to know! Any chance you could make a fancy reference of this in the Quick Reference slides? :)

How about a signet ring or maybe a torc that shows the favor of the King Under the Mountain?
I can see Báin with a torc adorned with small gems showing the favour of the King Under the Mountain. Fits in with Dwarvish materialism. But to me that also lends itself to Awe over Persuade.

Maybe my "item" can be a big Mafia tough in a black suit walking behind me with his arms crossed, looking ready to enforce my will at all times, thus "persuading" people to see things my way.

I found this list online that could help with ideas for useful items: Useful Items Egs List
I like the idea of a good bottle of wine helping with Persuade. Easy to carry as one is travelling. And wine fits under 'consumables/perishable goods' that can form Useful items.

Was thinking more just as a quick reference. I've got the rulebook, just tough remembering details sometimes! :)

Sorry for my lack of posts - immediate fear of flooding here and so we’ve been trying to keep the waters at bay and our home safe. Will try to post at some point, today, but the rain is just as heavy/constant at present. Thanks for your understanding.

Jotun "Son of Jungarr" |

Good luck Tilly, hope all works out OK!

Belle Boffin |

Yes, good luck!
Also, @Tarondor, I picked courtesy for the earrings.

Waylon. |

I hope your family and home are safe Tilly.

Tilly Appledore |

Thanks, everyone. Appreciate your concern and well wishes.
GM, the rain's still coming down hard (hasn't stopped all day and night), however we're persevering and managing to keep from flooding. We're on the watch for the rising waters in the front yard and the full pool situation out back. The street drains are overflowing, so no matter of backwashing for the pool helps much as it just rises back up from the full drains. We're hoping the rain slows during the course of the night so we can have a small reprieve. Usually summer and the beginning of autumn in Oz is very hot and dry and we're worried over severe bushfires. This year it's the heavy rainfall and flooding which is highly unusual. Apparently we're suffering from severe "rain bombs". The whole of the east coast has been under siege with this bad weather. I'll keep checking in.

Báin son of Thrombur |

As an American, I cannot speak to the Australian experience, but I know that we usually have drought at one location, and flooding at the other, such that our problem isn't overall about quantity of water, it is really about distribution.
If we could pump bazillions of gallons of water from one end of the country to the other, we'd be all set.

Tilly Appledore |

That's the problem down here. The earth gets packed so tightly due to lack of rain, that when the rain falls in abundance it causes trouble rather than help the drought-ridden areas. It simply washes everything on top away! This year has been one where we haven't had the issue of water restrictions where I am (on the east coast). The farmers much further inland have experienced drought. It's the inland residents that have the devastating issues with lack of rain. So, yes, we have both flooding and droughts in this sunburnt land.
The rain has lifted and the sun came out today. Grey clouds still partly fill the sky, but we had a lot of wind yesterday and the rain has stayed away.

Belle Boffin |

That’s rough. Glad it’s a little dryer where you are. Would be nice if the inland could get some of those rainclouds.
In game, if Tilly wants to use another approach while Belle’s attempting to handle things, I’m fine with that in-character and out-. Please don’t feel like it’s stepping on my toes because you spoke up before the NPC post.
Whatever benefits the party is a success.

Báin son of Thrombur |

Ironically, there IS an anti-drought gel, or maybe it's a powder. The Chinese, and some other nations are trying out a soil amendment that helps to keep water in the soil locally, rather than just have it wash away.
There are other solutions like swales cut on the contours of hills, and intermittent small dams on streams to keep water local and give it more time to seep into the water table, rather than just run off.
Now, all of these solutions do require SOME water over time, there's no doubt.
In many places in the US, local water problems are problems created by we simple humans. Whether by killing off predators, so the local herbivores no longer have a competitor and thus eat up all of the ground cover, so the soil goes to crap, or by cutting things down, or cattle, etc. In places we're starting to find more sustainable solutions to these problems that we created, and still keep the cattle, etc.

Tilly Appledore |

Hope things get better for you, GM Tarondor.

GM Tarondor |

Oh, things're great. I'm busy with lots of new work. An avalanche of new cases. Far better than the alternative!
Not so great for my 7-year-old son Matthew, who's downward progress on a snowy hill behind our house was abruptly ended by his face impacting a tree. No broken bones, but it narrowly missed damaging the eye. From his hairline to his collarbone he is one purple bruise and abrasion.

Tilly Appledore |

Ouch. Poor Matthew. Glad there aren't any broken bones. Hope he recovers quickly.
It's very late, here, so I'll make an IC post in my morning. Night!

GM West |

Damn, I'm glad your soon is okay GM! Hey ,just as a heads up, I'm still around, but busy at work (tax office) with zero mental bandwith to compose a decent post. Just want to keep you all appraised and let you know I'm keeping an eye on the thread as best I can. Gonna try like hell to get something up next week sometime. This weekend is my birthday and I'm headed out of town for a VERY brief vacation. Maybe that'll clear my head!

Tilly Appledore |

Oh, I did/do more than that with my boy. ;)
In my narrative of last night it should read Handovar Tunnely not Robin Tunnely. I guess I was too tired to keep their names straight in my head. Apologies!

Tilly Appledore |

Sorry to see you go, Mythicman/Lascegorn. Best of luck to you. :)

Belle Boffin |

Perhaps you heard news of a NATO training accident in Europe. Turns out one of the men who died in the crash was from my hometown, and his mother works at my daughters’ dance studio. We’ll be paying our respects as they return the body to town.
I only bring this up here because I just learned something else about Capt. Ross Reynolds. His cats are Merry and Pippin, and his dog is Frodo. So he was definitely a JRRT fan!

Belle Boffin |

I’m not sure if I add a d6 or something from gear (grappling hook), but moot since I rolled a nat.12.
My favored skills for Champion calling are both ZERO d6-skills, so I only have a 16% (23/144) chance of success regardless of TN.
