The Paizo boards have been weird lately too. I know a few players on Discord who were just able to rejoin games this week.
My only issue is that I can’t edit profiles on iPhone anymore.

Belle Boffin |

No problem! I didn't know the history!
I'm looking forward to adventuring with you all.
Same! I suppose we’ll meet Bain when we set off on the road (or at breakfast).

For anyone who wants a quick snapshot of Combat and Stances (modifiers) and who doesn't have The One Ring Starter Set the Rules PDF, here's a copied summary (you can magnify the print if it is too small for you)===> Combat and Stances
While the rulebook states that hitting in combat is based on your Strength TN, it is also modified by the opponent's Parry, but how? I couldn't find the "how" in the book anywhere.
Difficulty of all attack rolls is based on the Player-Hero's STRENGTH TN modified by the Parry rating of the targeted enemy.
An eg for you, if Báin is fighting an orc:
Bain's STRENGTH Target Number (15) +1 (parry value for an orc) = 16 So Bain would have to beat the difficulty of 16 to hit the orc. I'm not sure if the GM will calculate/add into the parry value of the enemy in the background and narrate success or failure or whether he will give the parry value for the enemy as combat begins and we include it in our calculations on the board.

So how does a favored skill work? Is that extra ‘box’ an additional d6?
So Belle has
• Athletics (favored, 0 boxes)
• Stealth (favored, 3 boxes)
• Riddle (3 boxes)
Would I roll this?
Athletics TN16: 1d12 + 1d6 ⇒ (12) + (5) = 17
Stealth TN16: 1d12 + 1d6 + 3d6 ⇒ (5) + (1) + (3, 4, 1) = 14
Riddle TN16: 1d12 + 3d6 ⇒ (5) + (5, 6, 5) = 21
And how about that? My best skill failed and my worst made the near-impossible target! (Strengths & Wits are both 16; Heart is 14.)

GM Tarondor |

Tilly's got it right. But remember that a "12" on the feat die (the d12) is always a success. -And- the bad guys have the same difficulty in hitting you.
Also, there are modifiers. One is your stance (Forward stance earns you an extra die, Defensive stance costs you one (p. 96.)) Or you may have complications or advantages (e.g., high ground or standing in a bog (p. 102.))
But on average, you're right. You'd miss an orc more often than you'd hit. This isn't rocket tag.

Belle Boffin |

This isn't rocket tag.
I think that’s exactly what I’m doing in Ruby Phoenix!

Belle Boffin |

So I could reroll that stealth d12 then (and disregard its last d6)…
Stealth: 1d12 + 1 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 1 + 3 + 4 = 12
And I still fail.
But my Athletics roll was a d12, so lucky me!

Awesome, thanks GM! I'll get that rulebook this week and take a look this weekend. Is anything in the book open to players? Or anything off limits in particular?

Me too! I had read the big 5 multiple times before I graduated HS.

Tilly Appledore |

Báin, you've come to Tilly's room and Belle's a guest there. (Going by the rp leading to your entrance.) So, in the rp, I've had Tilly play out feeling snubbed by you. Just so you're aware.

Tilly Appledore |

@Elliot Sorenson: Please check your PMs. :)

Nicely sorted, Mister Báin. ;)

I have three daughters, who often share a bed during school vacation weeks (even this week, though the oldest has her own room). Occasionally, they complain about each other. Mostly, it’s the kicking and waking up with a foot or two on the pillow because one of them somehow turned 90 or 180 degrees in her sleep.
I’m giving Belle the middle-sister experience as seen through my daughters.

My oldest son (8) sleeps like he's six cats in a bag. He's all over the bed, or hanging half out of it. My youngest (7) never moves a muscle. He wakes up in the same position he fell asleep in.

Tilly Appledore |

When my son was little, you'd always find him in the same position he fell asleep in. He's still the same now. My brother's two girls destroy a bed/bedding when they sleep over - can't stop squirming.

Elliot Sorenson |

Okay, I'm leaning toward playing a Barding character, probably a treasure hunter type. He's grown up with stories of the events surrounding the death of Smaug (he was but a wee lad, if I'm getting the timeline correct) and longs to prove himself a hero of the realm as Bard did against the dragon. His family is not wealthy by the standards of Dale, and my character intends to return home with fabulous treasures to boost their influence, made famous by his exploits. Though exactly how he plans to go about this is still a work in progress..

Elliot Sorenson |

Good to know, I'm off on the timeline then. Was referencing the one in the book, which seemed to indicate that Smaug was killed 20 years earlier than the 'current' year, but wasn't sure which year this adventure takes place in. But maybe I should have looked at the first post and saw that the current year is 2998! Not much change to the character, but obviously he grew up with the stories told him by his grandfather! :)

Tilly Appledore |

Some quick retconning: I've fiddled around with the year in which this is set more than enough! I've permitted myself to be confused by the default setting of the game (much earlier) and my initial date (somewhat later). So HERE IS THE CANON: the year is 3016, as I wrote at the very start (see the Campaign Tab). Which means that the owner of the Prancing Pony is not Old Baynard, but his son Barliman Butterbur, the same that appears in the Lord of the Rings.
Elliot, hope this helps with the timeline in game. :)

Yes, we're doing things a bit differently here. The default time period of "The One Ring" is in the long decades between "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings." Everything's peaceful in Eriador, Bilbo is in the Shire and Balin is still around. This is to keep the PC's from rubbing up against the events of the Lord of the Rings and thereby being less important than a bunch of fame-hogging NPC's. :-)
Our game is making different assumptions. These early acts are directly before the War of the Ring. Bilbo's gone. Balin's gone. Sauron has declared himself in Mordor and the White Council has gone to pieces.
It's often asked "How would the War of the Ring have gone differently if Smaug was still alive in Erebor?" Well, we're going to look at a scenario very much like that. Our threat will be discovered just before war breaks out, but Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond and others will have their eyes on the Ring, so -someone- has to step up and deal with another situation. And somehow it all has to happen in a way that the story never makes it into the Red Book of Westmarch. :-)

Báin son of Thrombur |

Consider the authors. Bilbo and Frodo jumped up their own contributions and left out the other storylines. There's room for more than one historian for a time period.

Jotun "Son of Jungarr" |

Think I've got my character sheet squared away. What's the best way to get it to you?
Looks like I start with a horse as well, based on my Prosperous standard of living? Should I start with riding into town and figure out my hook? Or did you have a plan for that?

Belle Boffin |

So far, Tarondor’s been giving us new players a cue to enter!

Tilly Appledore |

There may be a chance for a meeting with Jotun as the party moves to the south gate to find the two farmers we need to question...? The GM will toss you in soon, I'm sure. ;)

Báin son of Thrombur |

If Jotun is a Bardling, perhaps he and Báin came to town together as business partners? He could be out with the horses and stuff, and we grab him as we head towards the gates?
I'm just spitballing here.

Jotun "Son of Jungarr" |

Sounds good, either way I'll wait for my intro! How did the rest of you get your character sheets to the GM? Did he create a slide and you popped your own up there?

Jotun "Son of Jungarr" |

Nice! Bain, did we get any other information from Gandalf? Or did he just say 'help these folks' or something along those lines?

Jotun "Son of Jungarr" |

Just like old Greybeard... enigmatic and curt to a fault! :)

Belle Boffin |

Belle, so did you go through Bilbo's birthday speech and pick a clan to join from the many he mentions there?
I believe Belle’s mother is a Took and Pippin is her cousin.
Is there more I should have done? I was so focused on statting Belle (which I did *not* get right the first couple tries!) that I missed the birthday speech.

Báin son of Thrombur |

Hahaha, no, nothing missed, I was just asking how you picked her name.
Right though, I need to remember that we are contemporary with Pippin, Merry, Sam, and Frodo.
Bilbo's 111st Birthday was 15 years ago, and it is 2 years away from when the 4 hobbits leave on their quest.

Belle Boffin |

Tarondor referred me to a site. Pearl Took had a funny story that, if my memory has it right, involves her accidentally killing an old lady by dumping her from her wheelchair. Now that I phrased it like that, it doesn’t seem funny. I guess what I found humorous is that Pearl Took is known for doing something dumb, and I like the idea of being her descendant and knowing there’s more to a person than one’s worst mistake. Of the useful items, Pearl Earrings are mentioned, thus they are inherited from Pearl Took—who I think died at the age of 64.
As for Belle Boffin… I liked the name! So Took is Belle’s mother’s maiden name. I was thinking of the song Liberty Belle from Super Furry Animals, which I guess is about a super heroine. It seemed like a funny name for a hobbit champion. (Stats-wise, a poor choice for a hobbit—I have two favored skills that have a 16% chance of succeeding!) Boffin reminds me of the term applied to LARPing weapons: “boffer weapons.”

Tilly Appledore |

We’re outside in the open and Tilly thinks they all need to be a little discreet when talking about all these things. I can stop doing that if it’s annoying.
