Paizo's 'The Godsmouth Heresy'

An adventure for 1st Level Characters

1 to 50 of 68 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Deep below the anarchic city of Kaer Maga, someone—or something—has begun stealing corpses from the city’s most prestigious tomb, the Godsmouth Ossuary. Fearing the worst, the clerics of Pharasma in charge of maintaining the crypts quietly call for aid, not wanting to risk their own members in combating whatever horrors may have crept in from the tunnels and hidden chambers of the legendary Undercity.

I am looking for 4 – 5 adventurers to accept this call for aid and to investigate the Godsmouth Ossuary. I will make my selection based on interesting characters (background and/or character concept), party balance and what looks like fun to play.

I am running this adventure already on these boards but had to turn a few interesting characters away at the recruitment stage...after running this adventure for a month, I am sure I can manage running a second group.

This adventure takes place in the Varisian City of Kaer Maga. All characters should have a tie to the city and should either be living or newly arrived in the city when the quest starts.
Your ‘employer’ for the adventure will be the Church of Pharasma. Your character should be known to the Church in some way.

The ‘Crunch’
All Paizo created classes other than Gunslinger, Summoner, Ninja and Samurai are acceptable; all characters will begin at level 1.
20-point ability buy.
Maximum HP for your class.
This being the ‘cosmopolitan’ City of Kaer Maga, Core, Featured and Uncommon races from the Advanced Race Guide are acceptable (Custom races will not be considered).
Two traits maybe selected (preferably thematic to Kaer Maga, Varisia or your Character’s background)
Average gold for your class.
Non-evil alignments only.
All character options must originate from Paizo published Pathfinder products; No 3rd Party Materials.

Recruitment will be open for a week, during which time I will try and answer any questions, with an expected close date of 26th May, Midnight GMT. I will make my selection over the following couple of days and look to start the adventure as soon as possible. The selected persons should be able to commit to posting at least once per day during the week.

I look forward to seeing some interesting characters ready to delve the Ossuary.

PFS credit?

NateMg - I am not running this for PFS credit...One of these days, I will look into the PFS program...just not yet....

Presenting Edmond.. All info is in his profile.. Thanks..

Posting interest. I'll have a character concept up sometime later tonight.

Here is Relnan for consideration. I used information from Pathfinder Chronicles: City of Strangers in drafting the backstory, so I hope that's okay. Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

My character idea is for an Inquisitor, of the diety Pharasma. Graven Chandler was picked for this task because of his history and special skills. In addition, he will make sure the wishes of the goddess are fulfilled. Graven Chandler was born and raised in Kaer Maga and has spent most of his life in or around the city.

This alias was made for a mid-level tomb of horrors campaign, I believe, but was passed over at the time. I'd be perfectly willing to redo at level 1, and perhaps tweak a detail or two, if the concept strikes anyone at all as interesting?

The short version: He's a zealous, undead hating paladin with multiple archetypes (3, in fact) who dual wields a main weapon with a particularly sentimental short sword, and wears slightly lighter armor than is typical.

Again, pertinent details are up for adjustment if appropriate, so don't sweat the details if they don't fit perfectly; I'll work with it if need be.

I think I might be of some use. I volunteer.

Never played a Barbarian before and a backstory is percolating ...sounds like a good campaign, time to get crafting!

On the other hand, the Ancestor Oracle I've been working on actually fits into the setting much better. Gonna go with that one.

Grand Lodge

Posting to confirm interest as well. Will post a character up later on today.

Interested. Would Kaer Maga work well for a goblin PC? Maybe a former slave?

All - some cool characters already, thanks... I will get a list up and running so people can see what roles people are going for, and where there may be gaps.

Edmond Blackerly - Half Elf Cleric of Iomedae
Relnan - Human Sorcerer
Graven Chandler - Human Inquisitor of Pharasma
Kairen Valos - Human Paladin of Iomedae
Mara Joans - Drow Rogue

Alex Mack - I am open to any race just as long as the story is good, fits with Kaer Maga and is fun to Role Play.

Dotting for interest.

So I went with the Barbarian in the end. He's just too fun. A member of an especially isolated Shoanti tribe up north, the Bone-Cruncher earned his nickname both by his ferocity in battle and at mealtime. Sent to the city of outcasts "to prove his might" (to keep the rest of the tribe from starving, in fact), this none-too-bright barbarian is ready for action. He's far from the smartest, and he's not even the strongest, but not many men take a hit quite like Madok.

Class Abilities
--------------------
Weapon and Armor Proficiency
A barbarian is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, light armor, medium armor, and shields (except tower shields).
Fast Movement (Ex)
A barbarian's land speed is faster than the norm for her race by +10 feet. This benefit applies only when he is wearing no armor, light armor, or medium armor, and not carrying a heavy load. Apply this bonus before modifying the barbarian's speed because of any load carried or armor worn. This bonus stacks with any other bonuses to the barbarian's land speed.
Rage (Ex)
A barbarian can call upon inner reserves of strength and ferocity, granting her additional combat prowess. Starting at 1st level, a barbarian can rage for a number of rounds per day equal to 4 + her Constitution modifier. At each level after 1st, she can rage for 2 additional rounds. Temporary increases to Constitution, such as those gained from rage and spells like bear's endurance, do not increase the total number of rounds that a barbarian can rage per day. A barbarian can enter rage as a free action. The total number of rounds of rage per day is renewed after resting for 8 hours, although these hours do not need to be consecutive.
While in rage, a barbarian gains a +4 morale bonus to her Strength and Constitution, as well as a +2 morale bonus on Will saves. In addition, she takes a –2 penalty toArmor Class. The increase to Constitution grants the barbarian 2 hit points per Hit Dice, but these disappear when the rage ends and are not lost first like temporary hit points. While in rage, a barbarian cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except Acrobatics, Fly, Intimidate, and Ride) or any ability that requires patience or concentration.
A barbarian can end her rage as a free action and is fatigued after rage for a number of rounds equal to 2 times the number of rounds spent in the rage. A barbarian cannot enter a new rage while fatigued or exhausted but can otherwise enter rage multiple times during a single encounter or combat. If a barbarian falls unconscious, her rage immediately ends, placing her in peril of death.

Switched Edmond up a bit.. Hes now just a reggie cleric..

Dotting with interest.

Here is my human witch that I am posting for consideration. I will have the rest of the skills/feats added on soon.

Pondering a Goblin Magus or maybe Bard, former slave and follower of Saerenrae working covertly in the lower parts of the city and starting trouble.

Shadow Lodge

This character should be a great challenge to play in this adventure due to his personal talents, faith and history. I look forward to hopefully joining the group! He may be an odd one, but he is a team player :)

Gazzer is a coward and a thief and a sneak.

And he's very happy being all three. He was born in a Kaer Maga warren and expected to die there, but circumstances changed all that. A roving band of cut-throat adventurers slaughtered his entire warren, all save Gazzer who stuffed himself in a crack until the slaughter was over.

The next few years were a blur, as Gazzer experienced life on his own. He crept from shadow to shadow, stealing to eat, stealing to live.

And loved it. A chance encounter with a book of alchemist formulae turned him from a sneak thief into an accomplished alchemist. At least until the Church of Pharasma caught him sneaking into their crypts. Instead of turning him over to the authorities or executing their own rough justice, they released the rat with a warning and expectation of a favor, to be disclosed later.

The time has come to pay up. And Gazzer hates having debts...

Mentality: Gazzer is initially distrustful of new people, but if they prove themselves to be loyal and useful, he will adopt them as his new family and stay loyal unto death. He's a bit standoffish and definitely used to being on his own, but he's also a little, well okay, a lot terrified of the Church of Pharasma, and what they might do to him if he fails to fulfill his debt. So he's more than willing to do anything he can to ensure that they won't be unhappy with his work. And if he can get rich along the way? Bonus!

Thanks for submissions so far - I will close recruitment at the end of the week (as planned) and then spend a short time making some difficult decisions on best submissions.

And Sara is back!

I think she is still good, as I didn‘t apply to any other PbPs with her, but I will check.

Sara is a cheerful, 78 year old aasimar that looks like she is twenty or so. She is a bit touchy about her youthful looks, as she has a history of being held back by her superiors for being “too young,“ dispite the fact that she probably played tag with her superiors‘ parents. She has a extreme distaste for undead, gladly discarding pride and safety to destroy them. She is quite sociable, with friends of all sorts all over town, but she is starting to be reluctant to begin friendships with the shorter-lived races, as she has out-lived a few too many friends.

Look at that. I rambled quite a bit. Should probably add this to the profile.

I present for your selection pleasure Zazou Elfear a Goblin Dawnflower Dervish (Bard Archetype).
As to party role he can function fairly well at the frontline due to good AC to hit and damage output, paired with the very useful role with it feat. He also offers some utility thanks to skills and spells. With his kick ass stealth and perception scores as well as darkvision he should make for an awesome scout.

Background:

Zazou lived a peaceful life, peaceful for a Goblin that is. His Clan the longears was at home in the Mindspin mountains in a secluded valley and were safe from pesky longshanks, Elves and mountain men and their rotten dogs and horses. Being the nosy Goblin that he is Zazou was always keen to explore what lay outside the valley and on one unfortunate day he got lost when straying too far from home and was promptly fetched up by Orcish slavers. While he was able to convince them he was not well suited for food this only ended him in being sold to Kaer Maga where the small goblin boy was condoned to servitude in a cleaning squad responsible for clearing out drainage tunnels.
Fortunately for the drain cleaning squad a Halfling follower of Sarenrae was among them who as was operating as a covert operative and looking to free Kaer Maga slaves. After a successful escape mission Zazou decided to join the ranks of the order Sarenrae as he did not like slavery and was impressed with the goddess of lights control of fire.
A decade later Zazou is similarly working in the name of Sarenrae to free slaves in Kaer Maga. His most popular routine being disguising himself as Halfling Cleric of Pharsma and disposing of the corpses of feigned dead slaves. This has caused a bit of irritation with the church of Pharsma as of late and there are rumors the priesthood is on the lookout for a Halfling imposter.

Personality:

Having grown up in a Goblin tribe Zazou is still what most Varisians would consider a savage. Another defining trait he shares with most goblins is a profound curiosity. However what he has left behind in the Mindspin mountains is the cruelty so typical of his kind. Also in his years in the civilized world Zazou has learned much, not only the fluent command of the common and Halfling tongue but also how to behave around longshanks and how to deal with the animosities his race is faced with outside of Kaer Maga. Currently I'm still misisng a trait and equipment was a bit sporadic but should be covered both weight and wealth wise.

That was allot of work, but finally done! :3

Let me know if anything is out of place. I put the normal average HP for my animal companion, but let me know if I should do something different.

Added some allies/enemies to the profile, tell me if they clash with npcs you have.

All - Thanks for submissions, really good entries from everyone and a real challenge for me to make a final decision...As soon as I have made that decision, I will post it here and connect the gameplay thread, etc

Just let me know if I should go ahead and revert to level 1. Imagine my alias now as an example mid-level build that is open to tweaking, heh.

Good luck to all!

Every time I check this page the jeporady music starts playing in my head.

Edit: random thing I noticed. The acronym for this adventure is HotGO.

Go Hot or Go Home!

....

I think I need a life.

It's ok. It's probably one of those things that sounded funnier in your head. I get those sometimes.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

All - Sorry to keep you in suspense but I am still mulling over party combinations...and I will now be away from the Internet until the weekend...So, keep eyes peeled on Saturday, I will post my selection then (sorry it is taking a while but people have obviously spent a lot of time crafting characters and I want to give everyone's submission a good thorough read before I make the final decisions).

PBP isn't meant to be rushed; take your time and make good choices. Campaigns can run for months, even years, so it pays off in the long run to have a good foundation. I check daily, so I won't miss the post where you decide. We'll see you then.

Let‘s play completey random rock paper scissors!

Roll a d3, and 1 is rock, 2 is paper, and 3 is scissors.

1d3 ⇒ 2

Preview says paper.

Third person to post goes against the winner between me and the second person, using the roll he/she posted in the first match.

1d3 ⇒ 2

random RPS? Hmm. Kind of a double blind there, ain't it?

Maybe?

Going to look up what double blind actually means.

Edit: yup, it‘s a double blind. I just can‘t think of how to do it without the players messaging a third party.

Also, I made some official-looking rules and posted them on my golnor alias‘s profile.

Well, it's probably too late to throw in a submission, but I've always said that futility is my fetish.

Anyway, here we go:

Harver the Red!:
His name, Harver the Red. A Tiefling Fighter, the 'Red' is sort of something other people call him, due to his red skin. It's not a name he really enjoys, but he makes due.

Largely a barfly, used to be from Magnimar, and he was a popular fixture over in their slums, usually known as the big evil bastard that people could trust and talk to. One of his buddies, a Gnome with a gambling problem, came to Harver for help, and the big red demon ended up dismantling a fairly 'harmless' criminal organization. Unfortunately for him, the head of that organization had powerful friends behind the scenes, and so Harver split. Since being a six and a half foot red demonic creature tends to put people off, Harv decided to make his way to Kaer Maga where he could more easily just blend in to the already unusual atmosphere there.

As to his connection to the church, I'm open. If their priests or worshipers are allowed to drink or 'enjoy' life, it's very possible Harv is one of their drinking buddies. If that's not possible as I see they're usually very somber people, maybe Harv helps out somehow. You know, shows a little good will and helps some of the more frail holy men/women lift things around and redecorate, when he's not drinking or hung over. I'm easy when it comes to that.

Some crunch:

Ability Points Mod Cost Racial Trait Actual Points Actual Mod
Strength: 17 3 13 0 17 3
Dexterity: 12 1 2 0 12 1
Constitution: 14 2 5 0 14 2
Intelligence: 9 -1 -1 0 9 -1
Wisdom: 10 0 0 0 10 0
Charisma: 11 0 1 0 11 0

Just wanted to show how I statted him initially: After his Racial Modifiers

STR: 17
DEX: 14
CON: 14
INT: 11
WIS: 11
CHA: 9

Wow, that actually isn't bad. I'm not used to my characters not being horrible in some way. Anyway, if you have the Tiefling race to look at, he's basically that, except replace 'Skilled' with 'Fiendish Sprinter'. He's got loud cloven hooves. Clack clack clack. And replace Fiendish Sorcery and that spell ability with "Soul Seer", I figure that's one way he knows how and when to help people. Very eerie and paranormal.

With his gold, I'd get an Armored Kilt(he enjoys the feeling of being 'free', quite a bit.), an Armored Coat(what can I say, I'm a sucker for trenchcoats. I'm so cliche), and a flail(which I picture as just being a big iron ball on a chain that he swings around.). I imagine he'd squander the rest on, like, smokes, booze and beef jerky/meat. Not the healthiest of diets, admittedly.

So, if you like this character, I'll go ahead and stat him up more officially. But, I know I'm coming in late, so I'll understand if there's just no room. In any case, thank you for your consideration. :D

EDIT: Forgot to factor in the hit to his Charisma. Fixed now. Sorry about that!

So, it took a while...and a lot of reading and enjoying your submissions...but I have finally made my decision....

Cue drum roll, etc...

...there were too many good submissions to slim it down to one group so I am going to go with 2 separate groups....the first will stay on this board (which will have the gameplay thread connected shortly) whilst the other will go to Heresy beneath Kaer Maga....

But...to make sure I don't overload myself, I will stagger the games by one week (so Group 2 won't start until next weekend - I will send a PM to let Group 2 members know when their game is up and running...)

So, who's in? Like I said, it was very difficult and I would love to have given everyone's characters an opportunity (and I'm sure those who didn't will find a game elsewhere soon enough)....

Second drum roll....

Group 1

Madok Bone Cruncher - Human Barbarian
Sara Evergreen - Aasimar Paladin of Pharasma
Edmond Blackerly - Half Elf Cleric of Iomedae
Relnan - Human Sorcerer
Elee Laurell - Halfling Druid

Group 2

Balin Katona - Dhampir Cleric
Olwyn - Human Witch
Kairen Valos - Human Paladin of Iomedae
Gazzer - Ratfolk Alchemist
Zazou Elfear - Goblin Bard

To those who didn't make it, I hope you find another game (and I will keep you I mind if I ever need a replacement).....to Group 1, I will connect your gameplay thread very shortly and to Group 2, I will set your board over the next few days and get things moving in a week's time.....

Sounds good. Can't wait to start, and thanks GM!

Excellent! I will see you then!

I'm really excited! Ready to go whenever you are captain!

May we find victory.

YEEEEEAAAHHHHH, time to SMIIIIIITE.

...Next weekend. lol.

I'll go ahead and retro my level, etc. before then. Try to keep up with me, boys! Once the unliving stop poppin' up, I'm gonna be mowin' them down! WOOOOOO!!

MADOK ENJOYS TWO CHICKENS EXTRA IN CELEBRATION

Looking forward to starting, and congrats to everyone who made it!

Don't mean to be impatient but any idea when you're going to have the group one thread up? Am getting pretty excited. :D

This site is a bit weird. Try clicking on the title of this page (you know, the bit that says "The Heretic of the Godmouth Ossuary.) That should take you to a slighty different page that has a bunch of links near the top.

The thread has been up.. Click on the gameplay tab at the top of this page..
