Sorry if this is holding everything up, but I don't feel like posting at the moment; I'm just pissed off at how underpowered Krisilanni is. Then again, how am I supposed to know how to make a character powerful enough to compete with people who've been playing D&D and Pathfinder for a while? I just...need time to cool down. It's probably because I'm dead tired that I'm overreacting, but it's just so infuriating.

even though i have been playing the 3.5. d20 system and derivitives since 2006, i have always been an amateur optimizer compared to some of the people i met, in fact, i'm just as underpowered as you. but i have been doing freeform RP since 1997 and haven't really improved much.

Nothing wrong in any of that, I feel the same way some times

I ignore 99% of any bonuses you get to saving against spells... including but not limited to: spell resistance, immunity, wrong type for spell, and any racial bonuses. Plus your a human to me....
I said no to that... think about it... especially since my thralls are permanent...

what was offered?
Maybe its a secret...to everybody....
Also,
One's first character, never tends to be badass or uber. Often not even second, third, fourth..well, you get the idea.
I have been gaming since 1996, I'm 31 one years old, have read more gaming books than most people have read normal books in their lifetime, and I am a literal encyclopedia of gaming knowledge, rules, lore, etc.
"Ace" is a concept I have been working on for several years now. Somebody who can more or less do anything, and whose uber high intelligence makes him that much better than everybody else.
The character itself has been a work in progress since last summer.
There's an entire handbook on the Factotum and how to play it right and badass.
The Chameleon PrC, which is technically the Red Mage from Dicefreaks, has been around for a long time, tweaked and re-tweaked more than once. There's plenty of discussion on it as well.
So yea, Ace should come off as optimized, polished, badass, etc. I've been working on him for at least three or so years, and there's plenty of work done before me.

Thanks Tre,
I need more exposure to his various inspiration, but right now, one of them doesn't show up in the book I'm reading very much. He gets more 'screen time' later on though.
In case anybody is curious, part of his personality comes from Mat Cauthon from the Wheel of Time. Right now I'm nearing the end of book six, Lord of Chaos. I know he's in some of the other books a lore more, however.

I'm off to bed, night all.

Ok this is where I show my age, I started gaming in 1977 with D&D box 1, Travellers 1/2/3 and James Bond the RPG, I also got space opera that same year a RPG game made in hell.
So work out how long I have been player, I have payed most game system, and count sandy peterson (of call of cthulhu fame) and Greg stafford (Of Hero Quest fame as friends) I have play tested a lot of games and my mate Simon owns palgrane press who make the rpg dying earth.
so lets just says i'm old so very, very, old.

and RE: Character Optimization:
i have been playing since 2006, and i was a big optimizer in 3.5. I learned my lesson about doing that in a party though as it tends to take the spotlight off the less-optimized characters.
that said, this is a high-power game where a lot of things that normally arent allowed to come together can come together over a simple hand-waived alignment restriction. that isnt necessarily a bad thing.
also someone mentioned earlier about your first character never being as good as you intend. that is true. my first character was a fighter, and the party wizard who wasnt even specialized in necromancy made a skeleton better than i was. it happens. once you play more games you get better at making characters.
RE: character with sub-20 AC. big deal. my character has 16 AC. his saves arent great either. I made a character that fit the theme i wanted, AC and saves be damned. The campaign tab said that if we go on field trips we will get gear, so i picked gear to fit my theme only. no rings of protection, cloaks of resistance, bracers of AC, etc. Ryckart doesnt go around instigating pvp because it doesnt make sense for him.
Vai Sunwake |
Krisi: You really shouldn't compare yourself to other people. When Vai first started, literally her only attack was a breath weapon she couldn't control. She had no stat above 14. My point is: character growth is a thing. Honestly I think it's a lot more fun to start out weak and develop as a character. Being a super bad ass from the get-go means your character has nowhere to go power-wise. And isn't that kinda boring?
Tenro |
^yup
i definitely admire the Ace character, i made a similar character for a face to face game. it was a lot of fun and a big challenge (it was more of an investigation-style game with a bit less combat, but the combat was very deadly).
unfortunately i have a hard time spending 3 years or even 3 months building a character. 3 weeks would be my limit. i just get so many character ideas that i get bored with one after awhile if nothing is really going on with it.
that is part of why i like this game because i could have multiple characters and have some fade to black after awhile without disrupting continuity.

I origionally played 2e in the underdark, then 2e in the outer planes, this was during the summer last year and some of the fall, that DM did not gear the encounters much towards the level of the group, he geared it to whatever was actually there, and gave hints as to where we should go, and always left us an option to go at it without combat, but we rarely saw it except in hindsight, that is the DM who has influenced my gaming stile over any other, let me tell you, the underdark is He** I averaged one death per two campaigns up untill I found a warforged who could nt die so long as there was anything left of him and someone conscious to fix him, then I had a super angle (I think it was a Deva, it was originally an agathenin) character that was freakishly powerful and had a freakishly powerful sword.
I learned the hard way to make things powerful, I had to learn fast.
I have had less than a year of DnD,I think about 2-4 months of Pathfinder, but this is not my first character, this is my 8th if I remember right. so yea.. I forgot what point I was trying to make...
you'll get better, not everyone has had years or a killer DM, this is rules light, and combat is not the focus of this Campain, it's about self discovery and having fun and being a kid (through your character) so yeah have fun, if your character would be jelous and suprised at being outclassed, play that, this could be a personal hurtle for him to overcome, his own insecurities
Krays |
Kryas started out as an NPC in another game I ran.
Now exposed to a ruels light environment, he's become alot more.
He's not uber at melee combat (though he's getting better), or even with spells (he can add mix necromantic effects to his spells, though), per se.
Where undead are concerned though, he's nigh untouchable by them and can assert his influence over them, along with any undead he summons cannot be taken from his control.
With Dhampirs he has much less influence, but he has an afinity for them, and they generaly seem to think he's an ok guy. Ask Asch :)
He's come a long way...

That's the beauty of this game - unless it's a combat situation or a charm spell, no one can dictate how you play.
Try to keep it in line with other players for the sake of continuity, but you are (almost) never compelled to do anything: make your own fun, even if you have to bend or break some rules.

Well, not feeling much better, but at least everyone is trying to help me out, so that's something. I still don't fuggin' know what to do at the moment, though, so still not really going to be posting much until I can either get some direction or figure it out myself.
Krisilanni Rashira |
It's more like he thinks Tyrrin is sympathetic to the undead, which is basically allying herself with them in his eyes. Besides, the wall is down anyway with the disintegrate spell, so weaseling his way out with words wouldn't make much sense. I just don't know at the moment; my mind is still hazed by irritation.
