Round 3

Liette lets out a scream again, one of defiance and one of rage. Valor's next round blasts square into the drake's jaw, sending shards of blood and bone fragmenting off. When she pulls the trigger on Justice, the gun ruptures in a misfire, creating a cloud of black smoke around the cylinder and a shower of sparks out the gas vent. Liette flinches, but keeps firing. Valor again strikes true, and the dragon nearly nose-dives straight into the ground as a bullet blasts off one of its horns.

At this, Liette is inching forward, a small step with each gunshot that she doesn't even realize she's taking. Two more gunshots are fired off, bone, flesh and muscle are rendered into a fine mist by the high-caliber rounds. She shoots faster and with more precision than she ever has in her whole life, the entire time recalling what these things did to Nathaniel. Are you watching?

Sigmund nods wearily in thanks at Crissor. He tucks his holy symbol away on his wrist, and draws out Beacon. He focuses through the stinging pain of the cough, and touches Kenan on the shoulder with the pommel. Once again, the blessings of Iomedae bolster his aim.

The drakes not being in range yet, Abigail shouts to the others, "Take coverrrrrrrr!!!" Cursing under her breath, she spurs Sacha to be ready to pounce as soon as possible, while she asks Erastil to make her harder to hit, "Make my skin like steel. Let their evil fang curl and break on it!"

Crissor growls "It's just like shooting ducks for supper back home." He then starts into his firing routine launching arrows skyward at the most wounded drake in the formation. One of them joins the bullet holes and scorch marks on the heavily wounded drake flying to the left of where the dead leader was.

A second later Kenan's first arrow splits the drake's skull and buries itself in the evil lizard's brain. The drake ploughs into the ground, flipping head over heels before sliding to a halt twenty feet from the crusaders. Kenan shifts his aim a few degrees right, and unleashes three more arrows into the next wounded drake. They bury themselves feather deep in his signature tiny grouping in the drake's chest.

Viorel takes off heading for cover, he wants at least something against his back so the Drakes can't gang up on him easily. Death is a real possibility, better make them pay dearly for my life. The thought passes trough his mind as he cast a protective illusion forming figments of himself mirroring his body so it would be harder to hit him.

Barek levels his own bow at the wounded drake. Last chance before they're on us... he thinks, drawing three arrows from his quiver. Focusing, he fires them off one after another. His first two arrows strike the wounded drake in the throat, tearing open its trachea. Blood and electricity leak from the wound at the dragon tries to scream, but it can only gurgle.

The drakes continue to fly forward, closing the distance to the party. The drakes are now about twenty feet off the ground, high enough to clear the boulders, but not high enough to avoid the massive mountain lion's wrath. Sacha charges forward, now fifteen feet tall at the shoulder and bearing a giant-sized Abigail on his back. He leaps up onto the wounded drake, and rips its head off. Holding the head in his mouth he tosses the drake's ragged body hard against the boulder Viorel is crouching next to. The dragon's body impacts the stone with a mighty crunch before flopping down to leak blood into the dirt.

The rest of the drakes hiss and shriek in fury as they wing overhead. As one, they turn their serpentine necks towards Sacha and Abigail and spit balls of crackling sand at the duo. The balls explode into the familiar electrostatic clouds, obscuring sight of Abigail and Sacha. What can be heard is sizzling, growling and shrieking all mixed together. The sounds last a mere instant before they are cut short. Two heavy thuds of large objects impacting the sand follow.

Drake 4 damage: 3d6 + 4d8 ⇒ (4, 4, 6) + (8, 1, 5, 6) = 34

Total damage to Abigail:95 Sacha:95

So, without hero point intervention that puts Abigail at -18 and dead, and Sacha at -23 and really dead. A +4 or a +8 would give Abigail the first save, reducing the damage she takes by 15, and putting her at -3. Burning a H.P. for Sacha's second save would reduce his damage by 16 and put him at -7.

Pummelled and fried by the combined clouds of sand, Sacha rolls and trashes to avoid the electric arcs dancing in the air. Erastil must be smiling upon Abigail, for, as Sacha leaps and rolls with her locked in her saddle, she finds herself under her companion as arcs blast through the air.

The pain and concussion are just too much for her and she feels her head spin. Her mace slips from her grip and she follows, crashing in the sand as her form reduces to her normal shape. She lay face down, the smoke rising from her shell snared and torn by the winds buffeting above her.

Meanwhile, Sacha, driven by fury, races out of the cloud and aims like a bullet to the first drake he sees.

As one of the drakes touches down on the sand beside her, Liette exhales a sharp cry of surprise. The gunslinger steps back, knowing that she doesn't have enough firepower to take this thing on by herself. Eyes wide, she watches the drake turn, jaws snapping in the air, wing-knuckles digging into the sand as its tail lashes back and forth behind it.

Rolling across her shoulder, she ducks under an inquisitive snap of jaws, then springs backwards and tumbles through the dirt, landing in a crouch. Eyes locked on the drake, Liette eases back out of its reach and then turns her back towards it and sprints into the cloud of swirling sand and static electricity that she saw Abigail fall in. "Hang on!" Liette shouts, running straight into the cloud, disappearing from sight as she does save for a faint silhouette within.

Finding Abigail face down in the sand, Liette skids to a stop and drops to her knees, "Crap, crap! Hang on, Abigail, hang on!"

Sigmund's eyes trail the sizzling clouds of dust spit by the demonic drakes as they fall upon the cleric and her cat. He grimaces at the sound of searing flesh and cringes with the muffled thud. When Sacha springs forth from the concealment, sans Abigail, Sigmund cries out in alarm - or tries to, his suddenly swollen throat turning it into a painful squawk. He drops Beacon, letting it swing by the cord on his wrist, and hurries into the sandcloud, hoping the priestess still lives. He finds her supine form stretched out in the sand, the dustcloud obscuring the details. Praying that she still lives, he reaches out and uses one of his few remaining spells.

Oh yeah, since I forgot to say it above, Sacha took only 63 because of his evasion. Looks like we still need Crissor, Viorel, and Kenan. Liette can change her action since she misread the situation. Nothing is threatening her, all the drakes are still flying 20' overhead.

Sure.

Abigail coughs and turns on her belly, every muscle feeling tight and responding sluggishly. Grabbing her mace, she gets to her feet and runs after Sacha.

Meanwhile, Sacha, driven by fury, races out of the cloud and aims like a bullet to the first drake he sees. He rakes one massive paw along the drake's belly overhead, leaving three long bleeding furrows there.

Barek launches another volley of arrows at one of the nearby drakes. He lands two solid shots in the same drake that Sacha raked with his claw, wounding it further.

Sigmund's eyes trail the sizzling clouds of dust spit by the demonic drakes as they fall upon the cleric and her cat. He grimaces at the sound of searing flesh and cringes with the muffled thud. Viorel tries to evaluate the situation and eventually comes to the conclusion that there is not some fancy strategy to win this fight, it's about brute stregth now. With that he takes a small risk and runs towards the lone drake, stopping some ways from it. He then takes a deep breath and calling apon his heritage shoots out a wave of flame from his mouth all over the flying drake. The dragon screeches as it is badly scorched by the goopy fire the sorcerer vomited on it.

The drakes fly on past the group looping in wide horizontal U shaped turns into a formation coming back at the group. They'll make another pass in a few seconds.

Round 5

Viorel curses in his mind that he is running on fumes of his arcane abilities. "We need to get them down before they can launch another attack with their breath weapons." He mostly thinks aloud. Ultimately the mage decides not to risk waiting for the drakes to close in so he could use some of the more potentially lethal spells. Instead he casts his spell unleashing five darts of force against the drake that seems to be the most wounded. He takes off running behind the body of the dead drake taking what little cover it offers. The magical missiles leave the drake barely airborne, flapping furiously for altitude as its blood rains onto the sand below.

"Spread out, or they will hit us all!" Kenan runs behind the group of cacti next to Barek and fires an arrow against the most wounded drake. His arrow finishes the job. The faltering drake crashes down onto the boulder below with a thud, then rolls limply off the back of the massive stone to flop onto the desert floor.

Shrouded by the sandstorm kicked up from the last of the drakes' runs, Liette hastily works to reload her revolvers. She holsters Valor and snaps open Justice's cylinder, quickly thumbing in standard bullets from her bandolier into the six chambers. Sigmund watches Liette reload her weapon, eyes stinging in the sand. "Here. Let me," he croaks, holding out his hand. "I'll load. You shoot."

Barek fires off another arrow and heads for cover behind some boulders further into the depression.

Abigail commands Sacha up onto the boulder, "Go grab one as they fly over," she commands him before running to duck behind a boulder herself.

The three remaining drakes split off and fly for different targets the unwounded ones for Sacha and Kenan, while the wounded one heads for some revenge on Viorel for burning it. The drake targeting Kenan swoops in with terrible speed, and snaps its needle filled maw down tight over his head. When it opens its mouth, Kenan's cheeks and ears have ragged bite holes through them. Within moments his face is a mask of blood and ruptured flesh. The mighty Sacha swats the drake attacking him out of the air, the same way a housecat would an insect. The puma grabs onto the drake tightly, and shreds with his claw. In retaliation the dragon bites down on his spine, snapping it. The burnt drake snaps the head off of one of Viorel's figments with lethal ferocity, causing it to flicker out of existence.

Female Human (Taldane) Fighter (Trench Fighter) 3, Paladin (Divine Hunter) 7

With no time to wait for Valor to be reloaded, Liette leaves her sidearm with Sigmund as he finishes pushing the handful of rounds from her bandolier into the chambers. "Bring it out to me!" She shouts, hustling as fast as she can through the cloud of dust with stamping bootfalls. Skidding to a halt near Viorel, Liette kicks up a cloud of dust around her ankles, the long trail of her coat swings to one side from her momentum, and her gun arm swings upward towards the huge silhouette of a drake against the sky.

"Burn in Hell," Liette curses, squeezing the trigger. The hammer draws back then slams down, eliciting the thundrous crack of a gunshot. Justice's barrel kicks back and muzzle flash accompanies black smoke from the gun barrel. In the same instant a rupturing cloud of red mist bursts at the drake's chest where the round punches through its scaled hide.

______________
Effectively using a free action last round to "drop" Valor and allow Sigmund to use a move action to "pick it up" and another move action to reload it from her bandolier on his turn. Presumably this means both of her guns are reloaded on this turn, but the cloud is still up so she's gotta' move either way, so it'll only be one shot this round.

Seeing both drakes seemingly on a pass for Viorel Crissor shouts. "Viorel take cover!" he then shoots at the remaining drake. Hoping his arrows find an eye or something vital. Three of the shafts thunk into the flying lizard demon, but do not bring it down.

Abigail has learned the hard way the terrible power the drakes can have when combining their breaths. Kenan brings himself in his usual Zen pose and fires five arrows against the remaining drake, unfortunately the nimble drake dodges three of them. The other two arrows pierce its breast, but it remains aloft.

The remaining drake zips forward, inhaling deeply, and then spitting his sizzling gob of electrical sand at Sigmund and Liette. The cloud bursts over them, extending the bubble of electrically charged swirling dust already hanging in the air. Both the paladin and cleric are able to avoid the point of worst impact, but they are still burned by the crackling lightning of the drake's breath.
