Everyone finishes up their business and continues the journey. After a break for lunch and about four more hours of journeying, everyone is exhausted. The sun still blazes in the afternoon sky.

Need four more saves from heat sensitive individuals. Starting at DC 19 and increasing by one each time. Armor gives a -4 penalty. You've been traveling for 8 hours now. Anything more today would be a forced march.

As the group comes to a stop to decide what to do, they are currently in a very arid patch of land. Just as everyone is gathering together to talk, a loud buzzing can be heard coming from above. Looking up, the group sees a large swarm of insects descending upon them.

How fast are the insects moving?

They are moving at about the same speed a human can move. I forgot to mention, it's knowledge (nature) on these guys.

Edit: Ah, those must be your fort saves. That's 2d4 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4 nonlethal damage then Nathaniel.

Out of character yeah. Unless Nathaniel has a yard stick 'as fast as a normal human' is the best he can come up with from looking at it in the brief time since it has descended.

I so very much hate swarms. Fleeing is very viable.


Barek recognizes them as bloodhaze mosquitoes. They are known to be carry a deadly disease called sleeping sickness. Also swarm traits.

Our weapons are useless against them but they can be hurt by large effect magic or splash weapons. I have neither. If noone has the same, I suggest we leave. Wow. We actually fought these things in a Serpent's Skull tabletop game on monday! Not fun. We beat it, but we needed to go back to base camp to get some healing.

Oh. So Barek will take a move action straight down and ready to take another move action if the swarm comes at him.

Made this its own campaign with links in the campaign info tab. Also realized that we need a bigger battlemap, but don't have time to do that until later tonight.

Cinderfang, you know the same things as Barek. Those spells would function normally except where contradicted by *swarm traits*.

Nathaniel hovers a foot above the ground, then flies forwards, grabs Viorel and Torin by the scruffs of their necks and then flees away from the swarm.

I should have enough carrying capacity to let me pick them up.


Viorel is a sad monkey because he wants his fireball. TPO Viorel is angry monkey who facepalms because he could have sworn he had burning hands, need to correct that next level if for no other reason the concept. Also damn I hate swarms.

@DM: Would you allow removal of one of the pouches of adventurer's sash with a dagger and if so with what action? Thinking about use of alchemist's fire if the retreat plan goes bonkers.

That brings us to Cinderfang. Don't forget you're under a geas to help one another, if you all just run away and leave Torin to die you probably won't be feeling too well in a day or so.


@ Viorel - You can draw alchemist's fire from a sash as a move action as far as I know. If you are asking if cutting the whole pouch off and just throwing it would make it any quicker then I'm gonna say yes, but it'll destroy your sash. If you do that we'll make it a swift action.

"Hold still! I'll pick you up, we are fleeing this damn swarm!"

@Nathaniel: Crossblooded means I do not have my fireball yet.

Viorel reaches in to his backpack pulling his hand back now holding a smokestick with all the chaos happening around him, Viorel decides just to get ready to move if the bugs decide to attack him.

Move action-> Get smokestick from handy haversack. And ready action to move if swarm moves to him.

Torin panics and runs to the south, dozens of insects cling on to him as he tears them away from the swarm.

Damage to Swarm 1d6 ⇒ 3
1d4 ⇒ 2 Torin take 1 Con damage this turn and the next turn. You can remove the mosquitoes next turn with a full round action DC 18 Reflex save to prevent the damage.

Viorel retrieves a smokestick from his bag, and gets ready to run.

Initiative 4

Rosa casts a spell on herself and then moves away from the swarm with magical speed.

Nathaniel casts a spell and Nathaniel, Cinderfang and Voirel feel themselves magically sped up.

Moves onto Nathaniel and Viorel's squares, triggering his readied action to flee. The bugs swarm all over Nathaniel biting him repeatedly.

Cinderfang flies directly south of Torin, swooping close overhead ready to pick him up then pulls an aerial loop de loop dance that ends with his wings cracking to full open position. At that moment a bank of fog cascades out from the swarm, blanketing the area.

Cinderfang moves to AJ22, directly overhead of Torin
Casts Fog Cloud, the upper left corner should be in Q21, covering 4x4 area.
@Nathaniel - You should be able to fly right out of there. I'm not clear if concealment helps you against these guys, but hopefully it will disorient them a bit.

DESCRIPTION
A bank of fog billows out from the point you designate. The fog obscures all sight, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. A creature within 5 feet has concealment (attacks have a 20% miss chance). Creatures farther away have total concealment (50% miss chance, and the attacker can't use sight to locate the target).

A moderate wind (11+ mph) disperses the fog in 4 rounds; a strong wind (21+ mph) disperses the fog in 1 round.

With a supreme effort of will, Nathaniel just barely avoids managing to go into a slicing raving frenzy with his blade, instead calmly turning away to go after Viorel.

Going towards Viorel, aiming to end up right next to him so I can pick him up with a move action.

If it looks like we can run away from it as a group she will tell the others to do so.

If how ever it looks like the swarm will follow, she will move to with in 25' of the swarm and Channel Neg energy on it.

Cinderfang flies south and casts a spell.

I'm putting the spell in a better position for you, that way it'll actually do something by blinding them.

Initiative 7

Torin took another 1 con, for a total of three. 1 when the swarm first bit you, one on your first turn when you left, and now the third.

The mosquitoes clinging to Torin are now full to bursting with his blood. They detach themselves and fly away.

Viorel waits, assessing the situation

Failed both saves so...

The mosquitoes swarm into Nathaniel's eyes, ears, mouth a nose choking him as a living carpet of death attempts to devour his vital fluids.

You're nauseated for this round, which means single move only.

He flees the swarm, heading for Viorel, but dozens of the large insects are already locked onto him, drinking.

1d4 ⇒ 4 Take 1 Con damage this round and at the end of your turn for the next three rounds. Unless you spend a full round action and succeed at a DC 18 reflex save to scrape off the mosquitoes.

Rosa sees that everyone is getting away and moves back a bit more.

This would normally be the end of Round 2. Viorel, would you like to step in?

Seeing how it looks like we can run away Rosa will do just that heading 57 and off map 250' a round, then quicken-stride after that. Rosa can keep ahead of them until we lose em.
If not she will summon monsters to keep them accompide wile we get away

"No point fighting the things lets just get away as fast as we can."

Viorel activates the smokestick and throws it aiming it on the edge of Cinderfang's spell. "Nathaniel, you alright?"

Made asumption of improvised weapon and range increament of 10 feet of total -6 penalty, modify if needed, normally empty squere has AC 5. Aiming for R26. If hitting the R26 would be the lower left conrner of the 10x10 smoke cloud.

Teeth clenched, lips tightly shut Nathaniel bends over and grabs Viorel by the back of his jacket, lifting him up. "Lets get the hell out of here and I'll decide" he whispers, white-faced.

Oh! I totally forgot to call out Sun-Eater's movement! I just meant for him to continue follow Burek south. Will you let him move still?


Okay, I'm gonna call this fight. You guys will be able to make it away. Nathaniel would end up taking the rest of his con damage because he'd be too busy fleeing to scrape them off. Viorel would also get hit by the swarm once, so take 1+1d4 ⇒ 1 (total 2) con damage, and give me a DC 17 Fort save.


1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Yay success, oh actually it should have been 1d20+6 didn't get it at first but the con damage would drop the save bonus by one. So saved by skin of his teeth. Also means HP drops to 38

Best way I think, pointless to fight can could have cost us. I can heal if you need it and with a nights rest can even fix that con damage if needed


Yeah, it's a mindless swarm so it would have chased you until it lost sight. No point in acting that out round by round and wasting a bunch of time. You still need to rest though, or do the whole forced march thing.

Nathaniel glumly wipes away the mosquitoes from his eyes and skin and collapses to the ground.

"I REALLY hate insects" he announces to no one in particular. "Anyone know any cures to insect poison?"

GM, just letting you know, my eidolon cannot heal ability damage naturally and so the con damage will persist until I'm able to get a Restoration or similar effect on me.
