All seems to check out quite nicely.

The dinosaur's eyes remained fix on the drakes above as his expression shifts from one of annoyance to unmistakably that of a predator.

"Liette, while I'm sure It'd be a crime to miss the experience, up so high I doubt you'd get a good shot, and that I could catch you if you fell. No... this one is up to me, I suspect." He grips his bladehilt tightly and hovers a few feet above the ground. "I believe I can take them down- if they do not run, of course. And I can take enough hits and teleport far away enough to escape if they harry me." He takes his eyes away from them and looks around. "If anyone has any spells that will last long enough for me to get up there, now would be the time."

"I do not posses a spell that reaches anywhere near that far. And the one spell that would stop them from flying needs to supported by ground. Best I could do to bring them down is tantu them with writing draconic on the ground. Also nay on the spells to help you, either they last too short period of time, you posses already or only work on myself. Try your best to lure them within reach." He takes out his spyglass again. "I will keep an eye to the direction the third one went just in case."

So Nathaniel is going to fly up alone then? Are you just straight up flying at them? Teleporting partway up then flying?

So with 110 ft flight speed and the run action, you could get to them in ~36 rounds using the run action straight up each round.

Shadow Lodge

HP 100/100, Fort 13 Ref 20 Will 11, AC 21 TAC 16 FFAC 15, Init 8, CMD 33

You can run up? And you can run with a fly speed? Cool.

I'll fly straight up to them.

EDIT: Hopefully they'll run away, a solo fight in the air wouldn't be fun for the party...... You're too far away to see any of the details of my awesomeness.

I thought you can only run for limited period of time? Yeah little checking up on the rules.

You can run as a full-round action. If you do, you do not also get a 5-foot step. When you run, you can move up to four times your speed in a straight line (or three times your speed if you're in heavy armor). You lose any Dexterity bonus to AC unless you have the Run feat.

You can run for a number of rounds equal to your Constitution score, but after that you must make a DC 10 Constitution check to continue running. You must check again each round in which you continue to run, and the DC of this check increases by 1 for each check you have made. When you fail this check, you must stop running. A character who has run to his limit must rest for 1 minute (10 rounds) before running again. During a rest period, a character can move no faster than a normal move action.

You can't run across difficult terrain or if you can't see where you're going.

You can run up for x2 movement (normally x4, but can only fly up at half speed). Good point on the con checks Viorel. So 14 rounds without triggering the "run to your limit" thing, then a bunch more rounds of normal flight. All together 6 minutes give or take.

Shadow Lodge

HP 100/100, Fort 13 Ref 20 Will 11, AC 21 TAC 16 FFAC 15, Init 8, CMD 33

I'll just double-move up. They'll see me coming and with that height advantage they can flee before I catch up with them, so i'm not in any hurry.

Seeing no other way to realistically deter the drakes from following them, the team's giant super powered flying dinosaur resolves to go up and drive them off or defeat them. The minutes tick by as the synthesist speeds upward. He fades from sight for most of the party after about two minutes. Kenan, Viorel and Abigail are able to follow him for about another minute or so. Just as they are losing sight of him, they see the third drake has returned, and it looks like all three are descending to meet Nathaniel.

Everyone's eyes are turned upward straining to see what's happening until they hear a series of strange sucking noises. Loud barking and growling fills the air around them as they whirl to find themselves surrounded by five canine humanoids. Light is blotted out in shadowy auras around the creatures, turning the bright morning light into grey shadow. Clouds of brimstone scented smoke stream off their fur as the last of the teleportation magics that brought them fades. The things stand only partially upright yet are six feet tall at the shoulder. Their overlong fur covered arms dangle forward like a gorilla's nearly brushing the ground. Their grasping human hands end in wicked black claws, and their slavering wolf-like maws hang open to reveal blood red tongues. Ropes of thick yellow-green saliva drip from their teeth, and boarish tusks. Each one sports a third, octopus-like eye in the middle of their foreheads which seems to glow with a burning anger. Their lower bodies resemble that of common werewolves, like a man's body covered in coarse black fur, somehow warped and feral.

They each raise one arm and point a claw at a member of the party, still growling and howling. The noise becomes unbearable, seeding chaos in the deepest portions of the targets' psyches. Sacha, Barek and Crissor find themselves being driven mad by the noise. They begin to loose control, seized by the mental destruction it's wreaking on them.

Meanwhile high in the sky:
Nathaniel feels like he's been flying upward forever. While it was boiling hot down on the sand, it's getting gradually colder as he ascends. The air is getting thinner also, making it more difficult to breathe. At first he has no trouble looking down and seeing his companions below. Nor does he have trouble noticing that the third drake has returned. But after a few minutes even his eagle-sharp eyes can only pick up glints from their armor and the cloud of dust that's slowly fading around the stopped group. He turns his eyes skyward instead, focused on his task and hopefully redeeming his mistake from that morning. Once the drakes notice him, they show no signs of running, rather they begin to dive towards him seeking to meet him in battle.

Nathaniel, you are shaken for three rounds.

The altitudes next to the drakes are relative to Nathaniel, not the ground.

Need a round one from everyone, if you're confused roll and act accordingly.

Knowledge Planes on both the drakes and the wolf demon things. No, Nathaniel you can't see what's going on on the ground in any meaningful detail. Same goes for the people on the ground for what's in the sky. The sky battle's taking place at around 7500 feet so that's -750 to perception checks.

Viorel is a sad monkey... no two close enough to snatch in the same AoE :P Also I spent 10 minutes writing up the rolls for battering blast and then realized oh right I got haste now too.

Viorel lowers his spyglass as he notices they are surounded. "How the hell did these things sneak so close!" He exclaims as he tries to scourge his memory for some sort of explanation. He pushes that out of his mind as he concentrates on his spell enhancing everyone's speed.

Hasted everyone but Nathaniel(surprise) I went with the assumption that everyone is familiar by now the effects of the spell, duration 9 rounds.

The drakes rocket down around Nathaniel swooping as he feels a cold chill run through him, one nothing to do with the freezing winds that buffet him. Gripping his hilt, he looks down at them, and sees clouds of what seem like brimstone puff up. They need me...

A new urgency in his movements, Nathaniel turns his head towards the drakes below him and assumes a feral grin. "Down there on the ground, I have to move slow or else I'll smash into things. I think it's time to find out just how fast I fly." Raising his hand, a shower of silver sparks washes over him. His movements blur and, stretching out his blade, he rockets away parallel from the drakes, and lets out a whoop of joy. "Catch me if you can!"

Round 1
The Sky

.....In fact as Nathaniel nears the trio of dragons, he realizes they are falling much faster than he is rising. Still several hundred feet above him, they flap out their wings in a slowing maneuver. They rocket just past his reach roaring and streaming electricity from their needle filled maws, while simultaneously buffeting him with heavy wind. The gracefulness and power of these natively aerial creatures is terrifying, and Nathaniel feels himself shaking with fear and wondering if this was a good idea.

As the drakes swoop down around Nathaniel he feels a cold chill run through him, one that has nothing to do with the freezing winds that buffet him. Gripping his hilt, he looks down at his friends, and sees clouds of dust being stirred up. Uh oh, do they need me? A new urgency in his movements, Nathaniel turns his head towards the drakes below him and assumes a feral grin. "Down there on the ground, I have to move slow or else I'll smash into things. I think it's time to find out just how fast I fly." Raising his hand, a shower of silver sparks washes over him. His movements blur and, stretching out his blade, he rockets away parallel from the drakes, and lets out a whoop of joy. "Catch me if you can!"

The three demon-drakes immediately pivot to follow him, maintaining their position below him. Powerful strokes of their wings drive them forward until the catch him and then they execute graceful barrel rolls in time, like synchronized swimmers. Their bellies facing the sun, they inhale sharply and each spit a watermelon sized ball of electrically charged sand at Nathaniel. The crackling orbs speed up to him and burst open into electrostatic clouds of stinging sand. Nathaniel's tries to flip out of the way, and while he avoids a good deal of the lightening, one of the balls hits him squarely on. His scales are scoured and cut by the sand as the electricity sets his muscles to spasming painfully and his nerve endings burning.

After expelling their breath weapons the drakes pirouette gracefully into a diving posture and start to speed away towards the ground. Nathaniel can't see them from inside the lingering clouds of crackling sand that surround him, but he can hear their hunting shrieks dropping away from him...

---------------------

The Ground

Viorel lowers his spyglass as he notices that they are surrounded. "How the hell did these things sneak so close!" He exclaims as he tries to scour his memory for some sort of explanation. He pushes it temporarily out of his mind as he concentrates on a spell, enhancing everyone's speed. As his spell is completed he recalls a name, "They look like some sort of Lamasthan Nerizo demons. Normal demon properties, and they're poisonous, be careful!"

Barek looks a bit dazed for a moment but then shakes off the demon's spell. He growls, his rage rising in him, and then takes off towards one of the demons, drawing his blade and making a slash at it. The blade cuts deep, opening up the demon's side under his left ribs. "Don't forget that they spit acid too!" he growls.

When the ambush occurs, Sigmund is prepared. His mind shunts aside the chaotic intrusion and brings forward a spell to turn the tide in their favor. "By Iomedae, darkness be banished," he cries, as he evokes the goddess' curse onto the demons. Then he moves backward, dropping his holy symbol and drawing Beacon, which now shines like the sun. "Stand fast, my companions. Let us end these dogs." Once the magic takes effect, Sigmund tries to identify them and calls out his observations and recollections to the group. He doesn't recognize them, but apparently Barek and Viorel do.

Kenan waits till Sigmund's Aura emerges and then fires five arrows in rapid succession at the demon in front of him. Three of them hit the wolf-demon directly in the breast, piercing it deeply.

Seeing the demons appear out of nowhere, Liette lets out a yelp of surprise. Unable to warn her team and direct them to coordinate their attacks, she instead moves with a gunslinger's quickness, throwing her duster open and swiftly drawing her revolvers. Justice and Valor gleam in the bright daylight as she levels them at the closest of the demons at her side, bringing the barrels close together and staring between them as a makeshift sighting.

The smell of black powder fills the air, and with each shot the demon is driven back, a rupture of blood blossoming in the air, its body jerking left and right like a marionette on tangled strings. The nerizo looks shocked to have been hurt so badly so quickly. Hunching over in pain, its baleful eyes lock on to Liette's, hatred burning in them.

Crissor shakes his head violently as he almost drives his own arrowhead into his wrist. "Get out, and stay out, of my head filth!" He growls and aims at the demon closest to him, calling out [b]"Erastil grant me the power to smite this evil abomination." All four of the arrows, blessed by Erastil, pierce up to the feathers through the demon's core. As it leans over vomiting blood, the four wickedly sharp broadheads on Crissor's arrows jut smoking from his back like some kind of alien spines.

Abigail looks concernedly at Sacha as he whines and hisses, his eyes rolling wildly about. Resting her hand on the back of his head she says, "Come on Sacha, you can fight it." The cougar lays his ears back and looks up at her await orders. "Erastil, grant me your favor!" she calls as she urges Sacha forward into a charge towards the demon that Crissor just feathered. Abigail can feel Old Deadeye watching as the cougar leaps onto the demon's back. The demon shrieks as it is torn to shreds by the huge cat. The bloody bits of Nerizo flesh flying everywhere turn to ash and burn away to nothing as the demon dies.

"પ્રથમ પાદરીઓએ" says the demon Liette shot, then "અને પછી પવિત્ર યોદ્ધાઓ" continues the demon nearest Sigmund. Finally the one facing off with Kenan says, "ધીમું તેમને મારવા!"

The demon who Barek slashed open steps back from him, and disappears in a puff of sulfur scented smoke. I reappears off to one side of the battle, out of easy charging distance for the raging Sarkorian. The other three demons charge Sigmund, loping forward with long lupine strides. Two of the canid demons latch onto the cleric's arms lifting him briefly off the ground as they crunch down through his armor. The wounds sizzles and burns with their saliva and Sigmund can feel himself growing noticeably weaker. The third demon tries to bite his leg, but it's foot-paw gets caught in a gnarly root, and it is jerked up just as it lunges for Sigmund.

Round 2

The Sky

With lightning rippling through him, trapped in a miniature thunder cloud and the cold grip of fear holding his heart tightly, Nathaniel nevertheless cannot resist a small grin. "Shocking!" Moving down out of the cloud, he sees a descending drake and drops like the wrath of a god upon it. Nathaniel's falcion cleaves the dragon's snout, chopping half its mouth and face off lengthwise. The drake shrieks defeaningly in pain as its body parts and blood tumble away into the endless sky.

Seeing Nathaniel follow them as planned, the drakes turn, arresting their fall as one. They twist together like water pouring down a drain to attack Nathaniel. All three of them tear at him with crackling lightning filled maws, razor sharp claws and thick lashing tails. He tries to fend them off, but cannot stop all the blows. First a claw gets past his blade and rakes across his stomach. Then a thick crocodilian tail slaps him in the back of the head, filling his vision temporarily with black and white spots. He's still reeling from the blow when eletrical jaws snap shut on his thigh, sending spasms and shocks up his nerves and into his spine. His leg and back go numb as a final claw shreds its way across his back. A rain of charred and torn eidolon scales falls from within the twisting serpentine mass of angry dragonflesh as Nathaniel readies to strike back...

The Ground

"They are trying to concentrate their offense on Sigmund, followed by Crissor!" The mage translates. As the enemies surround the cleric he decides to try to relieve some of that situation, and shoots two fist-sized spheres made of force at the dog fiend. They strike home, sending the demon flying backwards to land hard skidding across the dirt. It flips quickly back to its feet.

Barek growls frustrated at the disappearing act. He spins and then rushes past the remaining demon to Sigmund's far side. The ranging barbarian attempts to roll past the demons, but still draws an attack. The demon's teeth catch only air. Barek swings his large blade into the creature, cutting it across the back. Its fur rapidly becomes matted with thick dark blood.

"No!" Liette shouts when she sees the three remaining demons converging on Sigmund. Viorel's warning goes right over her head as she pivots on one heel, sweeping her revolvers up and maintaining her steady aim on the demon she had fired at before. "Stay away from him!" The gunslinging paladin screams, unleashing another volley of gunfire that peppers the creature in the side, clips him in the shoulder and spins him around just in time to take a round to the center of his chest, another in the leg. The last shot shatters the demon's leg as its entire body begins to collapse into the now familiar ash of a dead fiend.

"Sigmund get out of there!" Liette shouts, smoke issuing from the barrels of her revolvers.

"Well, don't I feel special?" Crissor asks. Needing a longer lasting punch then smiting each demon, he focuses inwardly on his bow holding it out and calls on his divine bond with the weapon. After it begins to glow with a soft holy light, he steps back to stand beside Abigail.

Abigail orders Sacha to move nearer the demons, and asks Erastil to smash her foes. "Erastil, protect your allies and blind these evil fiends!" The demon that Barek hit earlier with his sword staggers under the spell, clawing at its eyes. The other hisses in pain and anger.

Sigmund continues to concentrate on maintaining his aura of bolstering light, while he backs slowly away from the demons careful to give them no opening for attack.

Kenan fires at the blinded, wounded demon hoping to gain some time to breathe for Sigmund. Four arrows find their mark, and the demon slumps forward onto the ground dissolving into a smoking pile of ash.

The last two demons look warily at the piles of ash that had moments before been their packmates. With a last whining growl they teleport away, defeated.

The Sky

Suddenly out of nowhere Nathaniel hears harsh voices appear above him shouting in abyssal. A second later two dog-like demons go plummeting past as they free fall towards the surface of Golarion below. Once they've apparently finished shouting their message, he sees them poof out of view a few moments later and several hundred feet below...

Nodding, his expression suddenly serious, Nathaniel concentrates to activate his dimension door ability. This requires him to lower his guard for a fraction of a second, which the drakes exploit ruthlessly. Twice more teeth sizzling teeth find him in the moment before he teleports. The electricity coursing through his system causes his concentration to falter and he loses the teleport!

Usually, a spell-like ability works just like the spell of that name. A spell-like ability has no verbal, somatic, or material component, nor does it require a focus. The user activates it mentally. Armor never affects a spell-like ability's use, even if the ability resembles an arcane spell with a somatic component.

A spell-like ability has a casting time of 1 standard action unless noted otherwise in the ability or spell description. In all other ways, a spell-like ability functions just like a spell.

Spell-like abilities are subject to spell resistance and dispel magic. They do not function in areas where magic is suppressed or negated. Spell-like abilities cannot be used to counterspell, nor can they be counterspelled.

If a character class grants a spell-like ability that is not based on an actual spell, the ability’s effective spell level is equal to the highest-level class spell the character can cast, and is cast at the class level the ability is gained.

Concentration: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17

Nathaniel's spell fizzled and with a shocked expression on his face three drakes claw into him.

Any chance I dropped the wounded drake first?

The three drakes continue their onslaught, sensing victory to be near. Another raking claw and a tail slap set Bartimeaus to flickering, barely maintaining his bond with Nathaniel. Then the jaws close around their throat. It's the badly wounded drake, whose face he chopped in half. The two good rows of teeth it still has clamp down through Bartimaeus, shattering his shell and tearing open Nathaniel's jugular and windpipe. Without the eidolon, the full extent of the frail half-elf's wounds is visible. He's literally torn to shreds, barely recognizable under all the blood. The drake gives two rough, savage whips of its neck to either side nearly tearing Nathaniel's head right off his corpse. Then it flings the bloody bit of meat in a wide arc into the open blue sky.

So that puts Nathaniel at -2694. Pretty damn dead. However, you have two hero points.

Hero Points Rules wrote:
Cheat Death: A character can spend 2 hero points to cheat death. How this plays out is up to the GM, but generally the character is left alive, with negative hit points but stable. For example, a character is about to be slain by a critical hit from an arrow. If the character spends 2 hero points, the GM decides that the arrow pierced the character’s holy symbol, reducing the damage enough to prevent him from being killed, and that he made his stabilization roll at the end of his turn. Cheating death is the only way for a character to spend more than 1 hero point in a turn. The character can spend hero points in this way to prevent the death of a familiar, animal companion, eidolon, or special mount, but not another character or NPC.

Because I'm gonna have to go realllllly fantastic to come up with a way you could survive being torn to shreds by dragons and falling 7500 feet, I'll warn you that there will be harsh but impermanent penalties in line with paying 4000 GP and getting a raise dead spell cast on you. The advantage being it will be immediate and not cost you anything directly.

I'll wait on describing the body falling until you decide what to do. It'll take a few minutes for it to fall that far anyway.

... I confess that I am tempted to spend the two points just to see what you come up with. Perhaps what occurred in Life of Brian?

Nathaniel's time is up. I'd like to spend a hero point as proposed in the discussion thread, if you would permit me. The hat is a Hat of Disguise so may cause some WBL problems, just to warn you.

The threat of demons finally away, Abigail looks up to the sky to see whether Nathaniel has managed to chase the drakes.

Perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17

"These were no match. I don't see Nathaniel up there..." she says as she frowns, concerned.

So, 5 Str Damage total. Also, I only have 1 round of Aura of Heroism left, so once that's up, we'll be without it until tomorrow.

"That was over very quickly. I hope Nathaniel is having as easy a time with those drakes..."

Dread grows in the hearts of the crusaders as first a minute and then two passes without any sign of Nathaniel's fate. Suddenly a dark colored object comes plummeting out of the clear blue sky. It slams into the sand twenty or thirty meters away with a loud thud, sending a cloud of sand and dust pluming up high into the air. A few moments later, a blood soaked top hat comes floating slowly down to land on the sand a few feet away from the group. Nathaniel's hat.

Viorel takes a moment to register what has happened, mostly being in denial. He then roars in draconic promising death and misery for the drakes while he shakes his fist at the sky. Eventually the mage wears himself out, after a few deep breaths he starts to walk towards the shape that fell preparing himself for the grim task of disposing of body. They will pay for this. I will make sure to kill each and every Sand drake that I can find.

Abigail dismounts and runs towards the crater as understanding slowly grows inside her. She topples the top hat in her hurry, tears flowing freely down her cheeks. "Fool!" is all she manages as despair strangles her words.

Reaching the crater, she watches with horror the mangled body, torn by drake and crushed by earth, knowing there is nothing her faith can do for him... She turns to the others, eyes red with tears, but can't say a thing.
