To avoid wasting time...

Torin and Nathaniel pop down into the holes and have a look around. This appears to be a small den. There is a chamber full of waste, another full of rotting meat and vegetable matter and a third that appears to have been some kind of nest. Giving it a thorough search they turn up a rod in the pile of waste. It's about two feet long and is made of a transparent glass like material. The surface of the rod is covered in swirling intertwining wind gust-like patterns from end to end. It's lighter than glass would be.

Nathaniel pops out of the hole and sighs as he scrapes the nest-gunk off his clothes.

Can't take 10 as there are consequences for failure (not knowing what it is). 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21 That doesn't get it. Either someone else can take a look at it, or you can try again tomorrow.

Hate to waste your 20, but that's not what Knowledge (Arcana) does, and unfortunately Rosa's not trained in Spellcraft and also doesn't have Detect Magic memorized today or I'd let you switch it over. All the things you can do with Knowledge are listed here. That roll would tell you that it was magically manufactured, not much beyond that.

I see. You still need to cast detect magic, but I don't want to hold up the game and make this a big deal. One of you will eventually get that it's a Metamagic Rod, Ectoplasmic (Lesser)

Everyone forms up and the column continues onwards. As they swing back northward the terrain again becomes scrubby dirt, devoid of features.

Eventually enough time passes that it's once again time to bed down for the night. Appropriate watches are set, but the night passes without incident. Once again, after the sun goes down the plains are covered in a freezing mist.

As the group is stopped eating lunch, there can be seen four riders approaching on horses. They are still fairly distant, but look humanoid. You can give me perception for further information. It'll take them 10 rounds or so to get to where you are now.

Nathaniel nods and soars up 30ft moving towards the riders, scanning them carefully.

As they get closer you can make out that they are humans. Three women and a man. All but one are wearing chain shirts. Apparently seeing the flying elf and Rosa's massive form they slow their mounts to a walk. They are still three or four hundred feet away when they stop. The woman in robes waves her hands briefly and a blue glow passes over her. She and the red-haired woman in chain say something to the man and he nods. He dismounts and advances on foot towards the group, his hands held where they can be seen.

Nathaniel flies towards them, stopping when he is 150ft from the group. He points a finger at them, and casts a spell. Message

The approaching group hear this: "Greetings. Cease moving towards my comrades, and identify yourselves. Speak and I will hear you."


"Uhhh....my name's Ish. Who're you?"

After speaking to the approaching group, Nathaniel swiftly cancels the spell, casts another directed at Rosa and the party and speaks "Everything is fine thus far, I am negotiating a means for us to pass each other without incident. They are cautious, but so far not hostile. Wait for my next communication."

Finished, Nathaniel turns back to the group and casts his messaging spell again, waiting for their response

Rosa dos not Relax, she knows other groups are out her seeking trophy's and spoils. In a lower voice she says to the others.

"Nathaniel says they are no hostile, but keep an eye on them, you never know"


"We should spread out just in case. There are spells that can hit from this distance. Most likely they are other crusaders or adventurer's but I care not to take the chance." Viorel notes before starting to adhere to his own advice. His hand moves to his morningstar at his belt out of habbit. "If they prove hostile we probably should start with the horses I don't like the fact that they have the mobility advantage."

She walks 45' ahead then stops keeping a grip on puppy leed, if they are going to hit any one with a spell it would be her so there is no reson to put the others in danger.


"Uhh. Okay. That sounds good. I'll go tell 'em." he says, turning back around and walking over to the women. He says something to them and gestures around the party with a broad hand gesture. The women nod and after Ish has remounted begin riding in an arc several hundred feet wide to pass around the party. Progress is slow, with much glancing at the party, but if no one stops them they will ride on in peace. They are headed west.

Nathaniel cancels the spell and flies back to his companions.

"All clear. I suggest we head on."

Rosa shakes her head and then starts to walks close to the four, holding her hands out so as not to look theating she stops and says to them.

Nathaniel jumps ahead of Rosa and stops her in her tracks before she can get too far away.

"Rosa, halt! I did not ask them because I did not want to risk confrontation. If you are certain that you wish to do so, then I will communicate your messages at a distance. For the sake of our safety, do NOT stride towards them. This is a land of demons, and they know nothing about us and have barely seen us. This I would preserve."

So saying, Nathaniel casts his messaging spell towards the other group. "Greetings again. My companion wishes to ask for information about our road ahead, if you would be so kind. All words from now on are hers."

So saying, Nathaniel communicates her questions, altering the wording slightly where he feels necessary.

DM, don't need to wait for me to post just assume I am automatically carrying along Rosa's messages.
Rosa, bit about altering messages is just so we can take advantage of my diplomacy bonus


They're riding from the east, the direction of Clydwell Keep, headed out west.

Edit:This time the red haired woman replies to Nathaniel, "We aint your feckin' tour guides and we don' want to kill you. Now honor the agreement and let us pass."

Rosa looks the the Red haired bimbo for a moment, wondering what the others would thing of she set Puppy on her, then she tilts her head, and says to the others behind her.

"You know this always happens, I just have this affect others, one look at the horns and they lose all ability to be respectful, its down right prejudice-stic I tell you. Well feck um, they are not use to us."

She turns and heads back to the group forgetting all about the four smeg-heads on pony's.

Nathaniel raises an eyebrow, then nods. "Let's get going then. We have a great deal more ground to cover today."

Getting ready to move off, Nathaniel casts a spell of magical armor on himself.

Cinderfang did not speak during the interaction, but as the other party walks away he speaks slowly. "That was a missed opportunity. They are clearly as wary of us as we're of them. Friends will be rare out here. Very likely they are just like us, and would have welcomed a brief respite from the constant hostilities of this region."


"Perhaps, but I will rather live without the brake I can wait untill we return the keep. The risk was too big, what do we carry with us 50,70 or perhaps even 100 thousand worth of gear and coin? Even with lousy market you could get at least third of that when you sold it. Even if they would have honorable intentions that is a big temptation if you belive you could take it by force. There is no law here. Either way what happened happened no sense in mulling over it." He took out his map making tools and marked an X on the map to this location. "They came from the direction of the keep so if they were fellow crusaders, we could return here and use the path they probably cleared somewhat, if we happen to come back to this area."
