Okay...my rebuttal to the nasty arrow trap.

#1. I threw a FIREBALL in that room. If there was a trap hanging from the ceiling or something, I'm pretty sure it is damaged or destroyed -OR- at the very least trigger by accident already. However, let's say the trap is in the floor or the ceiling (or whatever) and is unaffected by the Fireball.

#2. I have on Vambraces of Defense. These state...Once per day, as an immediate action, if the wearer has at least one hand free, when he would normally be hit with an attack from a ranged weapon, he may deflect it with the bracers, taking no damage from it, as if he had the Deflect Arrows feat. The Deflect Arrows Feat states... Benefit: You must have at least one hand free (holding nothing) to use this feat. Once per round when you would normally be hit with an attack from a ranged weapon, you may deflect it so that you take no damage from it. You must be aware of the attack and not flat-footed. Attempting to deflect a ranged attack doesn’t count as an action. Unusually massive ranged weapons (such as boulders or ballista bolts) and ranged attacks generated by natural attacks or spell effects can’t be deflected. Finally: Errata!How does Deflect Arrows work with Manyshot? Answer:
Manyshot allows an archer to shoot multiple arrows, but you only make one attack roll, so Deflect Arrows would block all arrows grouped in anyone particular Manyshot attack.

So...the trap?

ERGO: One attack, one deflection. Done. No damage?

2. As you did not check for traps you were flat footed to the attack.

Aside from detecting magic, there's not too much open-ended info-gathering on the wizard spell list until you get to contact other plane, which is still a level beyond what I can cast. Soooo I'm afraid there's nothing I can think of to help with the current problem, either. Having a bad run of problems that none of my spells can deal with!

You’re a pirate wizard. You are doing pretty well under the circumstances I think. We may want to invest in some scrolls later, just to increase your versatility though.

I just thought about something…if he is possessed or something Protection from Evil could give him a temporary reprieve from it for the duration.

Well, once the levitate spell expires we can detect magic to see if there are any other lingering spells on him. (He's probably wearing some magic items, too.)

I have a pretty wide repertoire of spells, just happen to have gotten really unlucky in the "never have the one right spell for this specific problem" department.

I can't remember...does Pathfinder allow the Wizard 'spell slot pending' rule?

Basically you leave a spell slot un-memorized and then later on when you need a specific spell, you memorize it on the spot so you can use it(Takes like 15 minutes?).

Of course, you still need a decent spellbook full of choice spells to really make it useful.

* Preparing an open slot only takes 5 minutes instead of 15.

Well, the GM told us how to heal the fellow: greater restoration, heal, limited wish, miracle, or wish, none of which I have. The lowest-level of those is 6th level, putting it out of our reach for at least one more level (Rhialla should be able to cast heal at cleric level 11).

I'll discuss some possibilities in gameplay.

There are a lot of good spells that I really need to get, like dimensional anchor (for fighting things like that living nightmare), siphon magic, unseen crew, mind probe, and hold monster.

The insane person also rolls once a week against the insanity. A successful save reduces the degree of insanity. Eventually they can lose the affliction.

Restoration can't cure insanity but it does reduce the DC of the save. Getting him out of the fort and the various things hammering his mind will get him some relief and let him start healing.

You can get information out of him. After a peaceful nights sleep would work best. A good diplomacy roll would be needed though.
