GM Baerlie |
Two kobolds are in the room talking to each other. When Radagast enters the room they stop and look at him suspiciously while they grab their crossbows. "Who are you and what do you want?" one of them asks in broken Common.
A lowered portcullis blocks off this room from the hallway to the north. The portcullis is old and rusty, and it no longer fits properly in its grooves. At the south end of this hallway, there is a grotesque dragon face carved in the stone wall. In its gaping maw it has two dozen round holes where its teeth should be. A 20-foot-long series of pressure plates down the hallway is in poor repair.
The dragon’s face used to be a functional trap that fired crossbow bolts at anyone stepping on any of the pressure plates in the hallway, but somebody disabled the firing mechanism and it can be repaired.
Would you please make a Diplomacy check if you want to talk to them?
Beorin Boulderstep |
Beorin waits to see what happens next.
Irisus Versicolor |
Hearing Kobold talking, Irisus walks inside with Radagast.
You have no fear to have for us or our weapons. We have no intention to rob you or attacking you. We only wish to know more about your culture, how you did integrated with dwarves architecture and what happen to them.
We know that you perfectly have the right to stay here. Your trap are still intact.
If you tribe wishs to have something in return, it's okay. Our organisation has done that many time in the past.

I don't think it a good idea to talk about Sharrowsmith now.
Tariq Jalal |
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Tariq throws down his crossbow, putting his hands in an open, non-threatening position.
"We mean you no harm, noble little dragons! We have come to this place only in search of our friend. Perhaps you have seen him? No? Perhaps you would like to trade for things to help you make more of your cunning traps?"
GM Baerlie |
"A human like you collapsed a corridor, that bastard! Many of us died! But we don’t know where he went. Our boss Naktok might know." one of the kobolds answers while pointing at Beorin.
"If you want to proof your non-threatening position, maybe you can help us with this trap." the other one says and points at the dragon head. "It's supposed to be a crossbow trap which fires when somebody steps on the pressure plates down the hallway."
It takes about five minutes to repair and rearm the trap.
Beorin Boulderstep |
"Why is he pointing at me?" Beorin asks not understanding Draconic.
Tariq Jalal |
Tariq nods at kobolds. "Of course my new friends. I would be happy to help you with this crossbow. Very cunning, and frightening to use this magnificent dragon's head as a ruse for your trap!"
Tariq slowly and deliberately picks up his crossbow and hangs it over his shoulder before taking a look at both the pressure plates and the crossbow setup inside the head.
Disable Device T10 + 7 = 17
"Ah ha! Thanks to your explanation of how it should work, I can see here that there is not enough tension here to trip the crossbow trigger. If we remove a bit of the slack here..." The Keleshite sets to work resetting the trap.
"Were might we find his greatness, Naktok?" Tariq inquires with a wide grin.

Irisus will translante what the kobold said in dwarven.

Beorin Boulderstep |
Beorin Nods as Irisus translates.
"Human? Me? I'm a dwarf....." he says disappointedly.
Cathryn Nesteruk |
Cathryn is pleased at the diplomatic way this has played out. It's no surprise to her, since she speaks Draconic too. And she will speak to them in Draconic.
"Beorin here, the priest, is a dwarf, not a human. Irisus is a human. There are many differences between them. I understand. It can be very confusing. But I have travelled with these people enough to know that they are not malevolent in their intentions."
Cathryn will then introduce the party to the kobolds.
GM Baerlie |
"Pale, hair in the face or on the head, no scales, wearing boots and shirts, all the same." the kobold answers.
Tariq takes his time to work on the trap. He rearms the trap with bolts from a bucket next to the double door, attaches some snares and wires and after a few minutes the trap is working again.
Next to the double door you find a sack, there are twelve narrow strips of leather.
The strips are blindfolds for Small creatures, but it is possible to tie two blindfolds together to make a blindfold suitable for a Medium creature.
there are bolts left, in case somebody wants to resupply
"Thank you. Boss is behind this door." a kobold says and points at the double door.

Beorin looks confused as well.

Beorin Boulderstep |
Beorin mirrors Radagast's movement and makes himself one blindfold too.
GM Baerlie |
After putting on the blindfolds Radagast feels his way through the door further into the ruins, followed by Cathryn and Beorin. The door is unlocked and does not trigger a trap. Radagast feels a tunnel to the north and a tunnel to the west. Two doors are in the north wall of the west tunnel.
I would tell you what you see, if you were able to see ;)

GM Baerlie |
Tariq and Irisus leave the blindfolds off and Radagast risks having a look at the room in front.
The reek of dung and sweat permeates this small room. Heaped in a corner, there is a pile of cement pellets, and in another corner lies a grotesque, stuffed leather bag with two oval patches sewn on it. The leather bag looks like a pet's toy, there are bite marks on it.
The leather bag has been used to teach a creature the fetch trick.
The pile of crumbly cement pebbles is actually dung.

"Guys, whatever is down here is clearly a pet of some kind - this thing has been used to train it the 'Fetch' trick!"
Radagast gingerly picks up the toy, before fumbling his way to the next room, and opening the door. If he hears no movement inside the room, he will risk taking a quick peek.
Basically, I will keep doing that with each of the rooms, until we encounter something mobile.
GM Baerlie |
Radagast picks up the toy and after a short explanation he leaves the room and advances to the next door. He opens the door and after a second or two he removes the blindfold. Animal hides and furs have been laid out on the six dwarf-sized stone beds in this room. A crude set of dice lies scattered on the floor. A number of weapons have been stashed in a pile to the north.
Only three of the beds have been slept in recently.
You find a magic longsword between weapons of poor quality. The initials NS are engraved on the crossguard.
Radagast the Brown |
Survival - 'Take 10' = 20.
Radagast can't fail the Perception check ;-)
"Guys? Sharrowsmith has definitely been down here - look at this sword; it has his initials engraved upon it! Also, only three of the beds in here have been used recently."
He then moves on to the next door, opens it, and, if he hears no movement, takes off his blindfold again.
GM Baerlie |
Radagast slowly moves around the corner up to the next door. He does not hear movement inside, but the smell is awful. He opens the door. The smell of incense is now almost overpowering in this house, where shelves full of jars and vases of different sizes line the walls. Three kobolds lie motionless in stone beds.
The kobolds in this room have been dead for several weeks, but the bodies were alchemically preserved. Three of the jars have a crude drawing of a lizard’s head on their labels, two of them are empty.
Some of the herbs and liquids in the jars and vases are alchemical substances, while others are intended for religious purposes.
The gel is basilisk extract, a basilisk's blood treated with alchemical preservatives. When applied to a creature that has been petrified by a basilisk’s gaze for no more than 1 hour, the creature is restored to flesh as though it had been coated with fresh basilisk blood.

"I guess this is the morgue? I don't really know much about kobold funerary rites..."
With a shrug, he carefully closes the door again, before continuing on to the next area.

GM Baerlie |
Irisus identifies Sharrowsmith's sword as a lesser blade of the open road.
Blades of the open road are longswords specifically
crafted to strike against the Aspis Consortium. A lesser
blade of the open road is a +1 longsword with a Glyph of
the Open Road stamped into its hilt. A blade of the open
road is a +1 Aspis bane longsword. Against agents of the
Aspis Consortium and creatures directly employed by the
Aspis Consortium, the weapon’s enhancement bonus is
2 higher than its actual bonus, and the weapon deals
an extra 2d6 points of damage. A greater blade of the
open road has all of the properties of a blade of the open
road and gains the ominousUE and heartseekerUE weapon
special abilities against Aspis Consortium agents and
the Consortium’s employees. Any wayfinder the wielder
carries grants a +2 circumstance bonus on all Survival
checks, not just checks to avoid becoming lost. A blade
of the open road and greater blade of the open road
increase this bonus to +4 or +6, respectively. Between
scenarios, the wielder can enhance a lesser blade of
the open road to become a blade of the open road and
later into a greater blade of the open road by paying the
difference in price between the two items.
