The reputable merchant and ally of the Society Aya Allahe paces one of the back rooms of Sharrowsmith’s Exports, a walled trade compound on the northern edge of Nantambu in the Mwangi Expanse.

“I wish I had more to offer,” Allahe apologizes before even presenting what information she has. “Nieford Sharrowsmith never truly retired from being a Pathfinder, even after he started this business. I think, in his mind, he was still the young adventurer that hiked through jungles and fought off troglodyte tribes. Sharrowsmith’s attitude changed over the last few months—I think he was concerned for his legacy and how history would remember him. Would it be for his discoveries or for the export business that dominated his later years? The answer, I fear, was unpalatable."

“It was no surprise when he packed up and left on an expedition. But that was months ago, and neither the Society nor I have heard from him since. Sharrowsmith has never left for this long without leaving some word as to his status or sending rather demanding missives about business decisions while he was waist-deep in some jungle bog. When my own contacts failed to turn up any useful information, I had no recourse but to go through his private notes.” Allahe motions to the mess of documents scattered about the office.

“What caught my eye was this translated rubbing. It appears to be the most recent piece of a very large puzzle Sharrowsmith was researching and indicated that he may be somewhere in the Bandu Hills. Traders from Fort Bandu have confirmed that he paid the garrison a visit, but that’s where my trail ran cold. Something happened out there, and Praetor Sylien—Fort Bandu’s commander—refuses to correspond with me on the matter despite knowing how close Nieford and I are. All I received in response was that Nieford had ‘done enough damage for one lifetime,’ and that if I wanted to discuss the matter further I would need to go to Fort Bandu in person.” Exasperatedly, Allahe runs a hand across her forehead and turns her distant stare out the window. “I cannot shutter the business and travel hundreds of miles on the off chance that the praetor can help; the company would fall apart. I’m hoping that you will be able to go in my stead, speak with the praetor personally to learn what has befallen Sharrowsmith and help him return.”

Allahe hands you the translated rubbing to look over. "I am happy to answer any questions you might have before you set out."

Cathryn is a half-orc who wears hide armor, and under that, she wears a monk's outfit with a jacket so her breasts aren't exposed, and a pair of high-heeled boots. She has curly black hair and likes to fight with a scythe. She gives herself tattoos on her birthday, so she has ten of them, having been only seven years old when she was left alone. Her eyes are green, as is her flesh.
Nicholas, her guard dog, is on a leash at her boots, gnawing on a bone from the last meal, and looking at him keeps Cathryn wondering if her mule, Zondra, is okay tethered outside or if she should be allowed to come in.
She sits, feeling almost bored but trying to keep up with the fretting Aya is doing. But her mind keeps wandering

"But is it really so strange that a man who is used to action could never truly leave it behind? Besides, the wonders of the jungle have a call that never dims in the soul.
"Still, his absence leaves us with two burning questions. Is he unable to return, or unwilling to return?"

Cathryn takes the rubbing, but does not know quite what to do with it. She reads it, and raises her eyebrows.

"I understand the wish to return to what your ancestors lost, though mine are less . . . ancient." She shakes her head to prevent herself from succumbing to grief. "And not relevant here. Yes, I'll help you find him. Any ideas where I should start? Personally, I would guess his house because there's more clues men can leave behind that just notes.
"And having a chat, in person, with Mr. Sylian seems like could be worth a good try. He's clearly holding something back, and it's obvious he has some kind of quarrel with Mr. Sharrowsmith."

Radagast is a tall, well-muscled half-elf with wild brown hair and a big, bushy beard, clad in spiky armor crafted from green dragon hide, and with an obviously well-used scythe in a harness across his back.

"A pleasant hike through the jungle, all to have a chat with a Praetor about a missing Pathfinder? Sounds like fun!"

He pauses for a moment, frowning.

"Although... do we have someone good at talking with people? I like talking, but I am afraid that usually, people don't appreciate the conversations... I do have a tendency to ramble, at times... Sapients can be so much more difficult to deal with than animals!"

Radagast turns his attention to Allahe.

"Can we have a letter of introduction? So that we can prove that we are acting as your proxies, and are not just a bunch of busy-bodies? Also, what can you tell us of the ground that we will need to cover between here and Fort Bandu, and the lands around about that are?"

Compared to his Companions, this old dwarf doesn't look like much. White beard and a bald plate with a pair of spectacles over his nose. Slightly plump and his beard well kept and groomed, his eyes the color of the brightest blue sky and despite his age, alert and active. A birthmark in a similar sign of a hammer over his left eye.

His equipment however seems to tell another story.........
His armor looks as if it came fresh from the forge with each piece of scale bright yet not gleaming. His warhammer seems to shine with its own inner light and engraved on its haft is the symbol of a hammer upon a forge. Simple travelling clothes under his armor yet padded and well oiled for the rigors of travel and to avoid chafting. Next to his seat is a bulging backpack yet seems to be holding up quite well.

His voice deep yet not loud as if from the depths of an underground river.
"It seems that this is a tale that would excite most dwarves...."
pausing a moment as he leans forward cupping his chins with steepled hands.
"Are we going under cover or as direct representatives to ask about what happened? Could you tell us more about this commander?"

Cathryn listens intently to the others, wondering who in this band gathered around her would assume leadership. Radagast was correct that dealing with animals was easier than dealing with people.

So Nieford Sharrowsmith went off on his own to investigate something that, when another one was investigated, bloody near expended a great deal of resources. I'd still like to check his home first and see if he's left any kind of a clue there, but it's wisest to wait to see what the others know before I make any real judgements, Cathryn thinks.

Okay, let's do this!

In response to Radagast's question about the terrain on the way to Fort Bandu, Allahe says, "The Bandu Hills are a dangerous place. This is true of much of the Expanse, but the Bandu Hills have a dozen ways to kill before accounting for living creatures: heat, dehydration, landslides, poisonous plants, carnivorous plants, and so on. Unfortunately, the place is sick with riches like diamonds, gold, and silver—an embarrassment of wealth that only attracts more dangerous occupants. I am surprised that Sharrowsmith didn’t settle down there, to be honest.”

Regarding Nieford Sharrowsmith's notes, Allahe says, "His old notes are not very useful. There are countless dead ends and disappointments. It seems from his notes that he traveled less and less with companions, and recently would only travel alone. From the way he writes, it seems like he felt he had something to prove. I'm afraid there is nothing more in the notes about the rubbing. He must have taken his most recent notes with him."

Allahe looks to each of you in turn, sizing you up. "We seem to have gathered quite a capable party, and I have faith you will be able to navigate the dangers of the Bandu Hills and discover what happened to Nieford. I will gladly provide you a letter, which you can present to Praetor Sylien. It won't make him any happier to see you, but at least he will see you."

"Do you have any further questions, or need of any further supplies, before you set out? If not, I suggest you begin your journey soon."

Knowledge Checks: Click the spoilers below to reveal what you learn if you succeed on the following checks. Feel free to share what your character learns with the other PCs, in character of course!

Knowledge (geography)

10+:
Thanks to the rocky terrain and bright sun, the daytime temperature of the Bandu Hills can sometimes reaches lethal extremes. Fort Bandu is the only major settlement for miles, and serves to protect the prospectors in the region.

15+:
Regional threats include the often-hostile Bandu tribes, ghouls and groups of kobolds, goblins, and hobgoblins. The one of the highest points in the Bandu Hills is Mount Nakyuk, famed for the veins of gold under it several centuries ago.

20+:
Stories of ghoul activity in the Bandu Hills also include confused accounts of ghoullike creatures that scholars call festrogs—horrific flesh-eating undead that walk upright but run on all fours.

Knowledge (local) or Profession (merchant or miner)
Members of the Exchange faction can attempt this check untrained with a +2 circumstance bonus.

10+:
The Bandu Hills remain rich in gold, silver, and gems, despite several centuries of colonial mining. Prospectors arrive from throughout the Inner Sea region to seek their fortune. The local Mwangi tribes often retaliate violently.

15+:
Most of the larger mining operations belong to the Deeptreasure Mining Company, which has dominated the local industry for nearly three centuries. Their onetime competitors, the Gold Crown Company, are now better known for shipping and export services.

20+:
Deeptreasure agents are always on the lookout for independent miners, whom they bully away from promising claims. A Deeptreasure representative in Fort Bandu is offering a bounty for information regarding any promising unoccupied (or ill-defended) mines.

I'm sure Sir Dwarf knows this story. He can interrupt me at all as if he wants to continue or correct . Once upon a time , the dwarves lived very deep under the earth. From Torag , the supreme God of the dwarf pantheon, they received a prophecy. When the ground tremble under their feet , they will climb up to reach the sky. Because of the difference between our schedules , it 's difficult to know the exact date of this event, however, the scholars estimate in -5293 AR .

And now a question , dear audience. What is the other event that happened on that date?

The answer... after we reach Fort Bendu.

Surprised by the reaction of his new comrades,Irisus admits his defeat and nods. I was waiting for our master of story beacause he could have saying it in better words than me, but hey, since you insist.

Before I begin, know that I wanted in no case to harm you. In addition to waiting for the bard, I thought it would be easier to start with what you knew to make it fit your memory.

Aya's right. The Bandu Hills are a dangerous place. All she says is true. The temperatures of daytime, because of the light and the rocky terrain can reach lethal levels. Fort Bandu is the only shelter for miles around and it serves to protect the prospectors.

Because they need to be protected. The Bandus are full of often hostile tribes and groups of ghouls and goblin, hobgoblins or Kobold. The one of the Highest Points in the Bandu Hills is Mount Nakyuk, famed for the veins of gold under it several centuries ago.

And my friend who eating frogs (points his Raven) made me remember that festrogs have been reported. These are undead flesh eaters who walk on two legs, but run on four. I don't know more about them.

"Save your money, you poor young man! Radagast will look after you! Yes he will..."

I am happy to cast Endure Elements on Renedar as well. After that, I am afraid that I am tapped-out.

"A simple purchase of a wand should help." Beorin offers.

Should no one else object, he'll make a stop at a shop (Pathfinder Style) and puchase one.

I believe Renedar is a brand-new Pathfinder (i.e. 0 XP), and thus does not have prestige to spend...

Tarq produces an elegantly carved ivory wand, offering it to Beorin. "The blessed waters of Sarenrae fused into this wand have amazing curative properties for those who know how to coax them forth. May it aid in binding our wounds."

Wand of cure light wounds (50) to help general healing needs for the party.

"You all seem to know quite a bit about the Bandu Hills. That's good!," says Allahe as she finishes writing the letter to Praetor Sylien. She smiles and hands it to Tariq after he addresses her so politely. "Take this letter and show it to any of the soldiers at the garrison at Fort Bandu. This map will show you the way."

Allahe's map shows a route which will take you south by boat along the Vanji River, where you can then switch to canoes and paddle up the Little Vanji and Dzimmi Rivers. Finally, you will wind through the lower Bandu Hills through a pass to Fort Bandu.

"The society has agreed to supply you with food and transportation for your journey, but any other supplies you will need to purchase yourself."

After you finish purchasing supplies, you set out for Fort Bandu. The journey is rather uneventful, if oppressively hot. The fort is a small frontier settlement surrounded by high stone walls located on the northern edge of Sargava. Within the fort’s walls, dozens of mining companies maintain outposts out of pavilion tents, hiring laborers and purchasing necessary supplies brought in by merchants from the north, south, and west.

The atmosphere when you arrive in Fort Bandu is noticeably tense. People go about their business without cheer, and the few glances you receive as you stride through the fort's wide gate show no hint of welcome.

Noting the sombre mood, Eskell decides to try to lighten it by doing what he does best. Pulling out a beautiful and finely-crafted mahogany flute, he begins to play a slow, soft melody that gradually progresses in tempo and tone to finish on a high and much more cheerful note.

Oh nice! Heh. Can I use that for my day job roll as well? If so, I get to add another +2 to it from my boon from Glass River Rescue. =D

Also hoping that this will go some way towards improving the general disposition of the town, both towards us as well as generally.

Before we depart:
Irisus takes the mug of water from the hands of Beorin wood and its contents greedily.
"Ah! exclaims the mage. Such water forged by Torag is divine and worthy of the reputation of the god of artisans. Thank you, Beorin, I feel ready to continue.

Yes Tariq, the Bandus hills are full of precious metals. The presence of chieliaxians and Aspis Consortium in Mwangi is not for nothing.
Prospectors believe that we are on a virgin land just waiting to be picked. It belongs to mwangis tribes. Ask and many will accept. Plunder and suffer the wrath of the jungle.

That said, we have no defined country. Notambu is not the capital and not Sargava elsewhere. I'm not responsible for what each of the tribes, ethnic groups or races made."

"If Notombu is the capital, so Aya is the Queen because she is so pretty!" La Corneille adds.

Irisus looks his bird with a bad eye and it's beak closes.

"The largest mining company is called the deeptreasure mining company. They have dominated the big mining operation for three centuries now. There was once a rival. The goldcrown company , now best known for the transport and export.

The agents of the deeptreasure lookout for independent miners. They bully them out of interesting concessions. A bonus is offered for information on unoccupied or poorly defended mines."

Irisus listen to the great talent of Eskell with a smile.

"Now that we have reached Fort Bandu, let me tell the rest of the story of the Sky's Citadels. In -5293 AR, The Starstone hit Golarion. It could have destroyed the world if a divine sacrifice had not arrived. This was the event that started the Quest For The Sky."

Yes, Radagast. Charming like the neighbors that the dwarfs found in their 300 years epic journey. They have fought them all the way up. The orcs!

Under the din of Eskell's music Tariq tells the others, "Before we see the Praetor, I would like to visit the Deeptreasure Mining Company and put out a few feelers if you don't mind. Perhaps it would be good for us to ask around and see if we can learn what damage the Praetor believes Master Sharrowsmith is responsible for before we meet with such an esteemed bureaucratic functionary?"

Irisus sighs "Yes, Tariq. They have a reprensentive here. But I don't like the idea of needing help from those vilains."

Well, hopefully I've been able to draw a reasonably positively predisposed crowd to us for Tariq to make his inquiries. =)

"You all bring up both points that is both good and bad but I do believe the good far outweighs the bad. It'll be best to find out what exactly this 'Master Sharrowsmith' has had done to warrant such treatment." Beorin grins as he listens to the music.
