@Azaela: This is what was written on the Lands of the Linnorm Kings

Lucent wrote:

Ruin is what the people of the north know now. First, ruin came from the hands of Karzoug the Claimer. When the ancient Runelord of Greed arose from the mountains of Varisia to reclaim his kingdom, he sent forth armies of giants to the north to scatter the Shoanti tribesmen and press on into the northern lands. The Linnorm Kings and their people met Karzoug's giants with the ferocity and heroism expected of their people, but Karzoug's tenacious strategies soon entrenched the Ulfen in a war of attrition against a larger and more powerful army.
Holding their own for years, it was only the icy grasp of unending winter that would weaken the Ulfen resolve. After seven years of battling Karzoug's forces in off-and-on skirmishes and sporadic sieges, starvation and the elements proved to be the enemy that this land could not as readily weather.

Whole crops failed over the three most recent years and thousands died of hunger. Low food stores soon resulted in riots and in-fighting among an already disparate and crippled people. Karzoug likely would have finished off the Ulfen people, were it not for his own kingdom suffering equally under the weight of winter snow and biting ice. The winter has proven to be a stalemate for the two forces, which is likely all well considering each of the Linnorm Kings have broken away from one another, turning their holds into selfish city-states that struggle to maintain the lives of their own people at the sake of all others.

A uniting force, and a reprieve from this abysmal weather, is needed to save these people before the Lands of the Linnorm Kings fades into icy memory.

If you need more or want me to come up with anything specific let me know.

Oh you just gave me a nice idea...

I have a Viking or Ranger(Guide, Skirmisher) that just needs a little Modification. I can get a background up soon.

Nice :)

Lucent:
Glad I'm not going with the Manilest Man Ever build. Already seen two other people mention guide rangers at least. Can't wait till I have some downtime to pour into Rasso.

I was super bummed when my work schedule didn't let me play Gaius Vekkhar in your Ascension game.

Two clarifications, if you would:

1. Is the deadline for recruitment March 1 or 4? Your OP said March 1.

2. I'm still unclear when the meteor hit. You said that Tamran would have taken two years to rebuild, and is now rebuilt - does that mean it hit two years ago? A number of years ago for the impact, relative to the start of your campaign, would be a great help, and I'd stop bugging you about it.

Thank you.

Info in Alias. She is going to be completely built in a Few days. I will slowly add in her info

Is there an Easy way to get Bastard Sword Proficiency without burning a Feat? I might convert her to the Fighter(Tactician) Build. Nearly the same background just instead of being a Scout & Hunter she is going to be a Soldier Commander.

Khelreddin - I believe the asteroid impacted in 4711, five years before campaign start date 4716. Lucent can confirm.

Aeryn - You can take heirloom weapon to get proficiency in one specific, single bastard sword. It's a trait.

Gundahar Brandt has been rebuilt from the ground up as a servant of Karzoug the claimer.

Troubled by the encroaching threat of eternal winter, Gundahar has begged his masters permission to act as an emissary of Shalast while attempting to restore some semblance of balance to the world.

A student of the old magics, Gundahar uses Thassilonian magics. Always a student of the school of Conjuration, Gundahar has focused on summoning magics to a degree beyond that of most modern wizards, forsaking the schools of evocation and illusion.

While I did not include a specific section on appearance in my statblock, my intention is to have Gundahar's appearance match that of his avatar.

Thanks very much - I'm reading on my phone and missed that date when I read back through the initial post.

Off to build a partisan!

Heirloom no longer works... It only goes with Martial or Simple...

Frakking Erratas!

Basic Stat Block is up. Will be adding in a stat block based on my Ezra Scarlet Acadia VI Alias.

Now I just need to figure out what gear she will have. Can we have our remaining Wealth as Gems?

What Jelani said, yep!

Yes, you may convert your remaining currency as precious gems (or even other trade goods like spices, etc) if you so wish.

Also, oops. Looks like I got my wires crossed when at work today. Deadline for submissions is March 1st as said in the OP. Campaign starts on the 4th.

All these dates are relative to -5GMT (Eastern Standard) time.

Having Karzoug around as an actual force and presence has opened some interesting doors for me creatively and RP-wise. It gives me notions about setting a PrP during the height of Thassilon where players could be associated with the other Runelords too (or waking a couple more up in this timeline }:)

Food for later thought.

You mean PvP?

And Almost got my gal situated. Any hints on Items? I have my Advanced Adventurer's Kit(100GP), Breastplate, Heavy Spiked Wooden Shield, Handaxe, Cold Iron Bastard Sword, some javelins, a bow and stone arrows, and that is it. I am thinking maybe making it just a standard Masterwork Bastard Sword but it doesn't fit the image of her Grandfather being a Cold Iron Bastard Sword Wielding Barbarian from a anti-fey militia... Though I am basing this on Irrisen still fighting the Linnorm Kings...

Any ideas? I am thinking her Grandfather fought Fey she is now fighting Giants. Any thoughts?

For gear, take a peek at my character Marcellano Kain for ideas on what to buy for misc gear. I don't know exactly what we'll be facing, but gear to help you in cold weather is -highly- recommended for this campaign. Cold Weather Outfits, Furs, etc. I happen to be carrying 40+ days worth of food just in case, myself. I don't know how much you can carry after what you bought, but don't be shy on buying a ton of stuff :P

Ooh. I didn't realize that they'd errata'd that. Lame.

Are any of the Aasimar types allowed? There's like 6 I believe.

If so, would you allow the Variant Aasimar Ability's to be used?

I am planning on Having pretty well all the items in the RoW Player's Guide.

Cleats, Ice Skates, Cold-Weather Outfit, Climber's Kit, Furs, Maybe Skis I think I allotted for 60 Rations...

Thorgar is all done I believe. He was sent to man a mountain fortress against Karzougs giants under the command of Linnorm King Opir Eightfingers twelve year old son, and after three months of starvation things ended badly...

I think the heirloom weapon errata is pretty great, traits should never be better than feats and heirloom weapon was better than most feats by a ways.

Instead of 60 days of Trail Rations (Which is 60 lbs), you could instead get 50 days worth of Wandermeal and 10 days worth of Trail Rations (for 35 lbs and 5.5 gp). Wandermeal is normally less-nutritious, but it weighs half, costs only 1 cp, and can be supplemented by the trail rations. Normally if eat the Wandermeals for more than a week, you become sick, but if you eat nutritious food at least once a week, you're good. Plus we can supplement it with hunting and foraging (hopefully).

I agree but you also have to realize it only applied to a Single Weapon. Meaning you could never pick up another Identical Weapon and gain the benefits.

Good catch! Where is Wandermeal Detailed?

EDIT: Nevermind... Why not stock up with some more of it? Say 12 Weeks worth of supplies?

After whatever period of time Fenyx spent enslaved by Shalast's forces, would it stand to reason that he was then apprenticed to a more experienced wizard, or would it be something more akin to a professor with multiple students? I'm operating currently under the assumption that it is the former, and they are huge proponents of the classic master/apprentice relationship, but I wanted to run it by you before I ran with it. Just looking to expand on his background's anchors a bit, mostly in regards to his time spent in Xin-Shalast.

The Exchange

Lucent, this is a *fantastic* idea! Your intro write up was great, and it really set the mood for what your going for. I like how much effort your putting into the recruitment thread, as it tends to speak well of how well the campaign itself will progress. I have a few questions.

1. What sort of balance between roleplay and combat are you hoping to strike?

2. Are there particular "roles" or "tropes" that you are actively looking for.

3. A concept I am considering is a Snowcaster Elf PathfinderWiki lore says that they have an active elfgate (The Icegate) that connects them with several other locations including Galt, Ustalav and Kyonin. What effects would you anticipate that the cataclysms would have had on the snow elfs? What I envision is that they would have been fighting a two front war between Drow and the hordes of the Whispering Tyrant, while perhaps acting as a refuge for some survivors from Kyonin. Do you think that would be a fair assessment?

4. A second concept I am kicking around deals with Hermea. For years Mengkare has been collecting the best and brightest humans from all over the world to take part in his "glorious experiment". With the world literally collapsing, it threatens to ruin something that he has spent thousands of years working towards. I could see Mengkare sending a select group of individuals to represent his interests. Do you think this would be a fair assessment, and if so, how would the past seven years have affected the island nation?

Hermea... I might need to look into that for Future Golarion Characters as they seem... Isolated enough to help me learn of Golarion.

Though it seems very... Marxist...

Liberty's Edge

Interested in the extreme here, and have a character emerging. A human Paladin of Sarenrae, who was coming of age when Tar Baphon made his move. He's had to watch his home of Ustalav turn against itself and fall to the undead, and since he grew up idolizing soldiers and adventuring warriors, you can BET he's itching to strike back. I have a few questions that'll help solidify some details, if you would be so kind:

exactly how many years ago would you say Tar Baphon pushed to the bastion of Lastwall? It's the trait I'm using and trying to get his age right for it.

What direction did the whispering Tyrant's forces come from/push to? Geography is my worst subject and just want to look credible in my background, lol.

Most importantly, any objections to a paladin? I'm perfectly willing--nay, eager--to discuss beforehand my ideas of what his alignment/code entail, and his relationship with Sarenrae, so there's no rules lawyering later about breaking/not breaking his code, or stepping on other players' toes. I know firsthand the drama that can come with a paladin in the party, and I want to spare us all the headache by sorting things out well beforehand, rather than choosing not to play a paladin at all.

Shadow Lodge

Dotting for interest.

Irrisen and pretty much everything on their borders are still fighting them. This includes the Mammoth Lords. They haven't moved much into Brevoy yet since ancient red wyrm has put a crink in their plans. So your background is much still applicable.

As for gear, everyone else pretty much said good and applicable things. I will also be including some downtime for crafting items if players want to take the magic item crafting feats. I believe from what I know of the AP that there will be good opportunities between chapters for this, if not in the chapters themselves.

Javell DeLeon wrote:

I would need to see a background written up before I okay an aasimar, even if just a few paragraphs justifying it. We have one applicant who is a plumekith aasimar, but he tailored a pretty great background for it.

Basically, make a great story for it, and the better you weave things together (not just into his personal life but the events of the world at large) the more likely it is I'll say yes. I'm pretty fair about that sort've stuff.

I think master/appretice works well. Especially in that I just don't see Karzoug putting together any classic academies just yet, not when he's still settling his power base and trying to get things back in a working order.

I love numbered lists! <3

1) Pretty even balance. I'm sticking as close as possible to the Reign of Winter adventure path (save for the beginning of the first book), so there will be an even enough split between RP and combat. Without having seen the future books I can't say exactly how much the AP itself skews things, but I am a huge proponent of inter-personal exploration between the PCs, so I will be giving lots of opportunity for the PCs to have time to RP amongst themselves along the course of the adventure.

2) I think if you look at the campaign traits in the Reign of Winter player's guide, and the ones I made up in this thread that speaks of the kinds of roles/tropes I'm looking for. I mostly want characters who feel like living, breathing parts of the world, with desires, wants and needs and a driving reason to care about the world; for altruistic or selfish reasons.

3) I would allow a snowcaster elf, definitely. They would have been some of the fortunate who survived the destruction of Kyonin thanks to their distance. If you have a copy of AP #17 (Second Darkness, a memory of darkness) it goes into some detail about them. If not I can reiterate what's there for you.

4) Yes. A thousand times yes. Mengakare would most definitely be behind sending an envoy of his bizarre nation of humans out to help. I'll make another post a little later detailing what's going on in Hermea. I have some great ideas for Mengakare, personally, so I'm excited to see someone take a look at his nation.

Liberty's Edge

Just posting to say I'm still excited about this game!

It'll probably be Monday before i get a full write up of his background/personality/appearance.

In the meantime, check out this image I came up with using Heromachine 3 !

Obviously it has it's limits, and the shield is likely a bit more stylized than it will actually look, but it's something I wanted to share to give a look to the character, thanks for the opportunity to come up with such a character Lucent!

What has happened to the Erutaki with the failure of the heroes in the Jade Regent AP?

One thought I had for a character is a displaced Erutaki whose home was destroyed by the morozkos the villain from the third book had been creating.

Tar-Baphon didn't initially invade Lastwall. His first act on being freed in 4710 was to conquer Ustalav, which with the armies of creatures formerly imprisoned within Gallowspire was a swift and largely brutal offensive. From there he pushed into Belzken to "reclaim" the orc hordes that once bent a knee to him, only to find out that they really weren't too keen on the idea anymore. Lastwall got involved of their own impetus pretty much as soon as they heard of the Tyrant's rebirth, and rallied with the orcs of Belzken (reluctantly) to battle Tar Baphon in Belzken territories. Thus far, Tar-Baphon hasn't made too large of a push into Lastwall aside from skirmishes. Odds are he is biding his time to make a single offensive that will wipe out the crusaders that defeated him the last time.

Belzken is pretty much a no-man's-land now, though. With Karzoug on the west side sending giants in to test Tar-Baphon's defenses and the Whispering Tyrant himself coming in from the east. It's a war-torn wasteland.

For some good geography references: Try this hugenormous map!

As for a paladin, I'd be very happy to have one in the group. However, a player's responsibility (especially in this campaign) is to realize that Paladins can now (as of the shift from 3.5 to Pathfinder) willingly associate with evil people for a greater good. This may well happen in this campaign, so an understanding that you may have a paladin working alongside an emissary of a Runelord of Sin is something to consider.

As for a code for Paladins of the Dawnflower, I think that redemption should be strong focus. Giving evil a chance to redeem itself and become something greater/rise above its previous sins. I think the upcoming Champions of Purity book coming in April will give a lot more options for that, too.

Funny you should mention the morozkos ;)

Some Jade Regent Spoilers:
Katiyana definitely made it out of Jade Reagent alive and still in control of the winter storms of the crown of the world. As her influence gradually expanded the Erutaki people were certainly decimated by Katiyana's influence, the undead, and pretty much every other hazard the PCs would have stopped.

While Katiyana hasn't subjugated the entirety of the Crown of the World, many Erutaki settlements are destroyed, and a large number of them fled south into the Lands of the Linnorm Kings or the land of the Mammoth Riders. Some small settlements still eke out an existance on the crown of the world, too.

All in all I think that concept is pretty sound, provided you can find a way to get an Erutaki survivor to the same starting point as the PCs.

Sczarni

Just posting to reiterate my interest. As my character is straightforward, I am guessing you didn't have questions or concerns.

Correct! Bjorn was pretty straightforward and I didn't have any inquiries. Typically if I go over a submission and don't see anything that needs correction or clarification I let it sit. Also if no questions are asked of me, either!

So you're good to go :)

Hmmm. Reading over the golarion deities a little closer, kinda feel like Iomedae might be a better fit for my idea. She's more closely linked to Lastwall, and her portfolio and domains just seem to align a little better with my concept and my plan. Working on it now.

Alright, here we go. Got some fluff whipped and some crunchy cookies baked up. Background remains somewhat general, but hopefully is accurate enough to the events of the setting. Let me know if something conflicts with history somewhere, and I'll patch it up.

Fire away with the questions, DM, and we'll fill in the gaps together if you're up for it. He's a bit iconic, perhaps, but with subtle differences that I'll get to express in the story. If we work out his code and such beforehand, we'll have none of the destructive drama that a bad paladin can bring, while hopefully still having a -little- of that rich in-character conflict that makes characters believable without bogging down the game.

Well, I'm 15 pounds from Heavy Encumbrance, and I'd lose out on some of my dexterity if I hit that. So while I could get 30 days more of Wandermeal, I think 40 days 'should' suffice, as I can also supplement it with Survival checks. I hope.

Man this Heromachine is tough business.. I've got my guy done gear-wise, but now is the annoying task of giving him color. He looks AWESOME though, even if I couldn't include all of his bandoliers, his shovel, or his cutlass into this. Least I got the musket and boarding axe..

And here he is!

Marcellano Kain.

*Edit* Modified it and updated the link to Marcellano 2.0. Took out most of the black and brown in his outfit, as it would stand out too much in a wintery setting (Idea courtesy of a friend of mine). Kept the hat the same, as its his symbol, though.

What about the Realm of the Mammoth Lords? Would they have fared pretty much the same as the Land of the Linnorm Kings?

I am in the middle of making my own Heromachine Picture... Great minds think alike...

Also I am planning on carrying a lot of it for the group as well as myself.

The Exchange

Good Afternoon Lucent,

I am still playing around with the premise as to my character, and I have a few more questions.

1. How did the Mordant Spire fare following the destruction of Kyonin and the return of Karzoug? Did the Runelord of Greed have any interest in the so called inheritors of Azlant? I am aware that the Moredant Spire elves are notoriously standoffish, But I could see them taking in survivors from Kyonin, considering that they did help the elves of Kyonin retake the fallen elven capital of Celwynvian four years ago. I'm starting to see a concept develop here but I need a little more info.

2. Ydersius and the return of the serpentfolk: In my mind, I see the serpentfolk as being cold blooded. While there is nothing that is specifically stated as such in RAW, I think that it's pretty reasonable. Going off this assumption, I could see an eternal winter as a severe threat to the followers of Ydersius. Is this a fair assessment? Going along that same line of thinking, do you feel that the other nations of Golarion might be willing to accept an emissary of the serpentfolk? Conceptually I am leaning towards a Nagaji for this idea.

3. Custom traits: You have created several custom traits to represent the nations of Cheliax, Lastwall, Shalast and Andoran. Would you be willing to work with me towards a custom "campaign" trait for the Mordant Spire, Ydersius or Hermea?

Thanks again for the quick replies Lucent. At this point I have narrowed down my character concepts into three ideas. I look forward to hearing your response and incorporating it into my final submission.

-Celeador

I'll look at throwing together a sketch of Fenyx in the next day or so. May be willing to do "thumbnail" portraits for others as well, possibly, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it; not got a ton of time to devote to it at the moment.
