The wagon opens, possibly bumping Rhost. Mel steps down her left hand holding fast to Alaric's right. Her right hand comes up to touch Rhost's arm, and both men see the same look that Lio gets when she is steeling herself for touch. Mel seems to realize it as well, because she stops. She closes her eyes, and when she does touch Rhost it is with something close to the girl's normal openness. She leans up and kisses Rhost very innocently on his cheek. "Thank you."
Rhost/Alaric:
"We are going to the river... Can you make sure that we aren't... please?"
Assuming assent from both men, she walks with Alaric to the women's wagon, reaches inside for a small, towel wrapped bundle. And into the darkness.
Xander:
And Xander is of course welcome to come, stay, or go about begging food from Rhost. :)
"Leaving aside the fact that I've always been a supporter of Andoran-style citizen councils anyway, I'm a stranger from across the world who's never set foot in the country, which is surely everyone's choice for their next ruler."
”We’re going there because we’re the only ones who know the truth about a tyrant. No one’s taking the stuff about me becoming Empress seriously, right?” She says again, a little more uncertainly, “... Right?”
Hrithik looks calmly and warmly at Ameiko. "When we arrive, there may be no other choice. When Cheliax That Was spasmed and collapsed, very little of it emerged well. Andoran-style democracy covers not even 10% of the prior extent. Bloody Terrors run through Galt, and bloody Terrors rule the remaining Empire. If you refuse to accept a mandate all traditionalists would accept, you risk chaos that makes Asmodeus look like a preferable option."
Hrithik shrugs. "Restoring the Empress need not mean restoring absolute monarchy. If there is anyone who could make the traditionalists you will need to woo accept an idea as foreign and novel as Andoran councils, it may well have to be the Seal-bearing Amatatsu Empress persuading from a Jade Chysanthemum Throne."
Hrithik looks sadly at her. "I am sorry, Lady Ameiko, but it may be the only way."
Mel looks up at him, taking in the exhaustion and depression that she caused. "Need you. Need to keep that..." Shakes her head, not having the words. "But don't... don't want it to taint what we..." She puts her free hand on over his heart. "Understand?"
"As my father would say, let's not borrow trouble. We have not yet arrived, and we don't know what the facts in Minkai are. I think we need to see how things are before giving Ameiko panic attacks and Alaric conniption fits."
She looks up at him and nods. "I... saw and felt things in those instants that I wouldn't wish on anyone... anything."
She pauses, "I don't want them to change what we have. I care about you. I...." She swallows, "I don't want to think about anyone but you when i think about..." She smiles at him, sad, but at least very much her. "But I think I'm being selfish."
She kisses the scar at the wrist of the hand she holds.
"As my father would say, let's not borrow trouble. We have not yet arrived, and we don't know what the facts in Minkai are. I think we need to see how things are before giving Ameiko panic attacks and Alaric conniption fits."
Hrithik looks sadly at her. "I am sorry, Lady Ameiko, but it may be the only way."
Hrunndalf nods, serious now. "It may indeed come to that. But let's not trouble ourselves with the burdens of possible futures. By the time we set foot on Minkai's soil, we will have seen, lived, and learned many things, and our paths will seem clearer. For now, let us just set out for Kopparberget, and then Karlsgard, and from there onwards one step at a time. We have good people, and a strong spirit. We will do just fine."
Alaric accepts the kiss with a wan smile, but gently removes the hand from Mel's grasp. A hundred thoughts go over his features, but none make it to his lips. Finally: "You should get cleaned up." If she lets him, Alaric turns around heads back to the camp.
Alaric turns for long enough to give Hrunndalf a helpless shrug.
Though this does little to dispel Hrunndalf's concern, he relaxes when Rhost checks in on the "patient".
ka-FLEX!
Later, at Koya's wagon:
Hrunndalf is just about to leave the two Clerics to themselves when he remembers to ask them: "Speaking of divine graces... is there anything in your power that may help Mel with her... affliction? It appears to be taking a greater hold of her every day. And if the magic should fail, Koya, perhaps Mel would be willing to speak to you about it? You have a gift for soothing troubled souls."
As he turns to leave again, he remembers one more thing: "Oh, and Koya, if you'd have a moment for me later tonight, I have another question to ask."
With a smile to the approaching Myriana, he manages to take his leave.
Flex, morning after Brinewall
About an hour before sunrise, Mel quietly enters the men's wagon. Carefully she wakes the only person that she needs to speak to.
Rhost waits for all of the ritual cleansing to finish up before he goes to clean the pots from the evening's dinner.
Alaric, still depressed (but with a fresh shave and smelling a whole lot better), will catch Rhost on the way to the river. "Next town. Too much beer. Cards. That kind of thing. What do you say?"
Hrithik looks sadly at her. "I am sorry, Lady Ameiko, but it may be the only way."
"As my father would say, let's not borrow trouble. We have not yet arrived, and we don't know what the facts in Minkai are. I think we need to see how things are before giving Ameiko panic attacks and Alaric conniption fits."
Hrithik shakes his head firmly at Kalimac. "We are not yet arrived, but the vision was explicitly clear about the Major Fact in Minkai, which I would argue is settled: Nearly everyone thinks the Emperor lives, but he is in fact long dead, a tyrant ruling in his place."
Hrithik nods to Ameiko. "I don't say this to give panic attacks, but rather to make certain that we don't fail to have spent serious thought with clear understanding on the matter. When we show up and overthrow the tyrant, the obvious question is what next? It doesn't require a Final Answer from us now, but it does require that we think about the possibilities lest we be blindsided."
Hrithik repeats his sad expression from earlier, "You asked, sincerely, if anyone was seriously imagining you as Empress of the Tian-Min people. I have to answer, yes, I am seriously imagining that as one possible outcome, which may well be the best possible one when the tyrant falls. Almost everyone who believed the Emperor to be alive may expect an orderly Succession. The only way to prevent Civil War and a generation of bloodshed may be to give them one. May. It should one consideration within the realm of serious imagination prior to our arrival there, because not contemplating the idea until it is an immediate reality is the true path to panic attack."
"None of that need make you Her Infernal Majestrix Ameiko II. Even if we find the decision is somehow compulsory to save millions of lives, it needn't make you anything more than a beloved figurehead, should you not wish to be. But refusing to consider that it may be the best path when we get there is borrowing heartache."
Hrithik smiles warmly at Ameiko. "From everything in the visions we just shared, you currently are the rightful Empress, by Minkai law. Even if you abdicate six seconds after seizing the Throne, getting the support you need to pry the Tyrant out of it may require you to assert your firmly established legal claim to it. Otherwise we can just throw the warding box into Bunyip Bay now."
"That is all I offer: it may be best, and should be in your mind."
She looks at him, tired and and worn. And worries. "I... left a note on Ameiko's things. I spent the night thinking, and I realized." She pauses, "I was so caught up in... I didn't see. I didn't see what it did to you."
She holds out some dried fish, "It's not anywhere near as good as what Rhost would make, but... I wanted to..."
"Will you walk with me to Brinewall? And tell me what I should have listened to last night?"
Alaric, still depressed (but with a fresh shave and smelling a whole lot better), will catch Rhost on the way to the river. "Next town. Too much beer. Cards. That kind of thing. What do you say?"
Alaric nods, silent for a long while as the couple makes its way toward the dead castle. His gloom is palpable, and when he speaks, his voice is rusty. Each word is a struggle, an attempt to express something Alaric barely understands. "I don't... like many people. I'm used to being on the outside of groups. It's comfortable for me. But four people in that caravan -- Koya, Rhost, Kalimac... and you -- accepted me. Each of you has in your own way, pledged some kind of loyalty and each one of you has proven it. And... and I never even had to ask."
More silence. "You're special. I know, in the beginning, you thought it was a physical thing. It's not. It's that young woman that insists on believing the best of other people. Demons, sure, but demons that she battles... and they're her demons. Now... now, you're Lio. And I don't... feel the way I feel about her. I no longer dislike her, but she and I are not friends, and I doubt we ever will be."
A bitter chuckle. "It was silly... but I was starting to let myself imagine a future... and now, now you're a stranger."
Mel stops, they are near Brinewall, even with a short stop they will be there in time. She runs the back of her hand down his cheek, and when she is sure, very sure that his attention is fully focused on her, she speaks.
"I am not Lio." She pauses, "Never could be."
"Last night, I saw three minutes of her life. In the moment... They felt real, but..." she shakes her head. "I don't know if it's me, or Makoa helping me, but they started to fade." She smiles, "I remember seeing them, but..."
"I remember remembering them, but not them." She smiles, "And I will thank whoever or whatever spared me that, because..."
"But... I guess I can't prove to you that can I? That I am still me?"
Hrithik, already awake and ready for the cleansing operation, nods to her and departs for the gathering space for those going back to Brinewall today.
In that case, he sees Mel and Alaric, both tired and drawn leave the caravan well in advance of when everyone else is leaving, headed in the direction of Brinewall.
Ameiko Again Because It is Important to Hit Preview Rather than Submit
Hrithik:
"All right," says Ameiko, in soothing tones, "All right. I don't think you ... took my meaning, exactly, but maybe that's not the most important thing right at this moment."
"I could give you a lot of empty platitudes about how people can always change, how there's hope where there's life, all of that. It's all true, but not particularly ... useful. So I'll try to tell you something I've learned, and hope it's useful for you, too."
"Here's what I found out from my own father. I was never free of him when I was trying to be what he wanted me to be, AND I was never free of him when I was trying to be the opposite of what he wanted me to be. I only finally became someone who wasn't defined by him when I ... quit playing. Smashed the board, threw away the pieces, left the building."
"I don't know if that will help you. But maybe next time you see a choice between up and down, try going, I don't know, left."
"For as long as I travel as one of your number, this I would vow," says Kelda.
Hrunndalf glances towards Koya and Spivey for signs of distrust, knowing them to be wiser judges of truthfulness than he is. "That's good enough for me, then," he concludes otherwise.
Hrunndalf:
Koya does not appear to be distrusting. Spivey, you have noticed, seems wary of Kelda, but she makes no protest at Kelda's oath, and appears to be ready to accept it for now.
"Be you," he says simply. "Be the woman that I..." he trails off, unable to finish that sentence, then: "Mel... I've never been more scared than I was last night. I'm including the day..." he touches the scars on his wrists.
Hrunndalf turns towards the two, and pipes in, "Oh, that reminds me... have you decided how it would befit us to address you? I believe the usual style would be 'Your Imperial Majesty', but perhaps you would prefer a more... culturally appropriate style? 'O Mistress of the One Hundred Falling Cherry Blossom Petals' maybe?" He almost manages to keep a straight face.
"Oh, absolutely," replies Ameiko. "And you shall be my trusted general, with an appropriate sobriquet of your own. General Bloodaxe? Bloodthews? Bloodhelm? Did I miss any, or is that the complete set of options?"
Hrunndalf:
Increase you Relationship Score with Ameiko by +2. Apparently, she needed the laugh right then.
She smiles at him, there is worry for him under it, but other than that, pure Mel. "I can't be anything but me... So at least you are giving me a standard that I can meet."
She looks at his wrists, her fingers touch the scar, intertwined with his own fingers. She looks at him, green eyes on green. "That's because you would rather be hurt than let someone you care about be hurt. Especially, if you can't help."
"My will may not be as strong as yours, but my soul... Is my own. Won't let anyone tarnish it but me."
She looks up at the skyline, just starting to lighten. "I have a present for you, but we need to hurry, okay?"
He nods. Sniffs. Turns away. "Sorry. I think... there's something in my eye. All right." It takes Alaric a second to compose himself. When he speaks, he is still a little guarded, but the anger, the grief, those are gone. "A present, huh? Is it a castle?"
Hrithik shakes his head firmly at Kalimac. "We are not yet arrived, but the vision was explicitly clear about the Major Fact in Minkai, which I would argue is settled: Nearly everyone thinks the Emperor lives, but he is in fact long dead, a tyrant ruling in his place." ... "None of that need make you Her Infernal Majestrix Ameiko II. Even if we find the decision is somehow compulsory to save millions of lives, it needn't make you anything more than a beloved figurehead, should you not wish to be. But refusing to consider that it...
Ameiko has listened to the discussion patiently before chiming in at the end of this.
"Well ... Duh."
"Look, I'm sure all of these scenarios went through everyone's head. What if they need a figurehead heir to rally behind? What if it falls to me to prevent anarchy with a provisional government? What if, what if, what if?"
"Look, I've already said we'll have to assess the situation when we hit the ground, and figure out the best approach. All I'm saying is that I'm sure as hellfire not going over there because I want to set myself up as Empress of Minkai, which makes that being the final end result of all this pretty darn unlikely."
She moves along the trail the group created yesterday. Keeping her stride with him. A short time later, free from the overgrown brush and grass she heads to the fallen lighthouse. From there the western horizon lightening with the morning sun is obvious.
She takes one look at the forest from which they just emerged... making sure that their time alone is still theirs. Deciding that it is, she puts her bag on the ground. Looks at Alaric with a small mint blush and takes off the oversized shirt that she wears and puts it on her bag.
She turns to the west, bowing to the rising sun. The following activity is one part martial skill, one part ritual prayer and two parts self expression. perform: dance 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 She is obviously tired from the day before, and from a night of thinking, but it also isn't her art. She finishes just before the sun breaks the horizon. She has just long enough for a breath, a calm. And then she sneezes, three times, as the first rays of the day hit her eyes.
She turns to him, relaxed, until she sees him. A small amount of tension, and of awareness comes back. "That was a present for me."
She sits down next to her bag and pulls out her flute. "And for you, and only you."Perform: wind 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17 The song is starts slow, sad. But it slowly transitions into something more beautiful, older. Haunted, haunting, but happy.
When she is done she looks at the flute, and then him. "Okay, I'm rusty." Smiles at him, "Obviously I need to practice for you more."
Rhost is up early for the Brinewall cleanup. He nods to Hrithik at the Brinewall Mustering Point.
Hrithik smiles and nods to Rhost. He looks significantly less haggard than the day before. "A good day to do something straightforward. Simple and Right."
"Look, I've already said we'll have to assess the situation when we hit the ground, and figure out the best approach. Hrithik quirks a smile, "But you haven't seen the other compartments in the warding box yet. Glass slippers. Stunning formal evening gown. Placards reading Amatatsu Ameiko for Homecoming Empress. It is your destiny."
Hrithik smiles and nods to Rhost. He looks significantly less haggard than the day before. "A good day to do something straightforward. Simple and Right."
Rhost nods in agreement. "Too few things are simple and right."
Ameiko Again Because It is Important to Hit Preview Rather than Submit
Ameiko:
Hrithik opens his eyes and smiles at Ameiko fondly and warmly, "Thank you for the advice. I have tried a little of that already, at Brinewall after the Vault and in camp, though I don't think my intention with Miss Reta was clear. I'll have to keep trying."
Sleight of Hand: Pickle into Empress Ameiko's clothing at appropriate point: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Hrithik looks into Ameiko's eyes. "I did take your other, primary meaning, Ameiko, I just ... responded to the part of it I can handle right now. Your grandfather reaching into my head was ... not something I can talk about yet. If I think about it too much right now, I'll take your place in the comatose bed."
"The horror of being like Her is the best part of it, because I can do something about that. The rest of it ..."
Hrithik shakes his head, then smiles softly. "When I can wrap my head around it, I would like to talk to you about it. I respect your advice. As the Resplendent Empress of Alabaster Jade, Blessed be Your Toenails, I value your guidance above that of nearly all other Resplendent Empresses."
"Ma tistax tiddeskrivih," Rhost says. "Not in Ordinary. Nor Arferol. It is doing. Not describing."
Mel thinks about that for a long time. In a probably blissful silence to the cook. As Rhost puts the finishing touches on the meal, she replies. "I don't know your word, but it made me think of the things that I can't put a single word to. The best is the moment when thought and action become joined. There is a purity to that moment that I rarely find."
Mel's smile for Alaric changes into a very different one for Lio, one that makes the girl look younger somehow. And then it falls away.
Mel stands still for three minutes, nothing moving but her eyes, which move in paniked jerks. A number of time, her throat moves as if she is going to speak, or scream, but she stifles the sound before it emerges. Three times she cannot, and a small sound of pain escapes. Her hands drop from the bowl, attached to limp arms. She looks down at her arms, seeing things that no one else can, makes a noticeable effort to move an arm, and all she gets is a hand that spasms.
She turns, legs unsteady and moves away from the group in the direction of the wagon where Rhost stores his cooking supplies.
flex time, because i've been at work all day :P
Lio takes the bowl out of Mel's hands, and realizes that something is very wrong. She tries to get her attention without touching her, without making it worse. To no avail. Mel? She says several times, without result. She doesn't have the kind of magic that could even begin to figure out what's wrong. Lio looks helplessly to those she knows to be more mystically inclined than herself, Hrithik, Koya, Alaric, and Ameiko. Why isn't anyone doing anything? Lio's panic is noiseless. When Mel finally flees, Lio, like Alaric, follows. She does not enter the wagon, rather she stands outside, helplessly for a long moment. She left the bowl Mel handed to her sitting on the ground between Ameiko and Shalelu.
Kyrademon:
would Lio be able to hear what's going on inside the wagon at all from right outside?
Lio stands helplessly outside the wagon, moving off when Rhost sticks his head in, and comes back out. She doesn't make eye contact with anyone, but walks a ways out of sight, and immediate ear shot, of the camp.
Bluff 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Enter Bluff total for Sense Motive DC:
Lio doesn't really know what just happened, but whatever it is, she thinks it's clearly her fault. Perhaps she's thinking back to when she touched Tollin and how that ended up.
Stealth 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18 to not be seen or followed.
As soon as she turns her back, Alaric blinks. We? And smiles.
Mel wrote:
And then she sneezes, three times, as the first rays of the day hit her eyes.
Alaric's heart pretty much melts instantly, though he does his best to hide it. Considering what a terrible liar he is, it shows through only slightly less obviously than the sun itself.
Mel wrote:

When she is done she looks at the flute, and then him. "Okay, I'm rusty." Smiles at him, "Obviously I need to practice for you more."
Alaric swallows, eyes clear, fixed on Melinda. He manages a nod but otherwise seems quite paralyzed. Finally, in rapt wonder: "Thank you."
She looks at him for a long time, wanting to touch him... but unsure of herself. Her rapt attention is broken finally, as she looks toward the woods the distant noise of people through thick foliage.
"I should have known... Not long enough." She stops, an odd expression on her face as the thought flickers across it. never long enough
Myriana breaks out into a broad smile and says happily, "Um, when the meetings done, could we visit the river? I'd really like to get cleaned up better. That is, if I'm not pulling you away from something else, of course." then adds, "I guess we should probably be getting back, before they start without us."
Shalelu wrote:
"It is getting a bit late for a river swim," says Shalelu, "But may I suggest that tomorrow, we have that promised archery practice?"
Myri's face lights up in a brilliant smile. "I would like that very much. Umm..I assume after we make camp again?" She pauses, "Umm..will Lio be there also? and um, what about Zaiobe? They're both archers too, right? or do you want to keep this private?"
Rhost stands outside the Supply Wagon in his best shoulders-squared, arms-crossed, nothing-to-see-here guard pose.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Myri having apparently missed exactly what happened but aware the something is not right with at least one of her friends, has left the gathering and approaches Rhost, having just missed Lio also. "Umm. What?" she says helplessly.
The randomwalker suddenly unlurks and congratulates DM and all players on a very well written and entertaining read (and an absolutely amazing posting rate).
The randomwalker takes the liberty to suggest the party is exposed to the dish called Hákarl, before slipping out of focus again.
Those characters who have been inquiring about local foodstuffs may feel free to add Hákarl to the list.
What is Hákarl?:
"Hákarl is a Greenland or basking shark which has been cured with a particular fermentation process and hung to dry for four to five months. Hákarl is an acquired taste and has a very particular ammonia-rich smell and fishy taste, similar to very strong cheese slathered in ammonia."
Okay, this is how I understand the crafting rules to work. Please correct me if I am wrong.
As an example, Rhost makes a dagger.
A dagger costs 20 sp and the Crafting DC is 12. So a minimally successful roll (resulting in a 12) would be multiplied by the DC (of 12) to make 144. 144 is greater than 20, so Rhost can make the dagger in a week. In fact, it's seven times greater, so with this check Rhost could make seven daggers in a week -- or one in a day.
So far, so good. But let's say Rhost wanted to make a masterwork dagger. So he makes the check above for the easy part, and then needs to start building successes for the "masterwork" component. 3000 sp, DC of 20. Let's say (for sake of simplicity) that Rhost rolls exactly enough for a result of 20 each time. 20x20=400. So in roughly eight weeks of crafting work (plus one day for the base dagger roll), Rhost has finally accumulated > 3000 progress, and finished a masterwork dagger.
Moral of the story? Masterwork is master work.
Now -- can Rhost actually spend time crafting while the caravan is moving (if we are not otherwise rushing around and exploring), or would I need to limit such work to those days we are still for > 8 hours during the day (time in town and repair days)?
Sounds right, but I will frankly admit that the rules confuse me.
You can Craft while the Caravan is in motion, including Smithing. The restriction is you cannot perform two eight-hour tasks in the same day without certain kinds of magic aid. So you can't Craft and be Cook on the same day.
Having read the rules, misread the rules, re-read the rules, and asked Mana to double-check my interpretation of the rules, I think I'm fairly solid on the Craft rules.
And while I'm at it, my final purchase list for Rhost (which is changed slightly from the one I sent to you when I started looking at the money involved) is this:
Reta-size armored kilt & underthings, masterwork breastplate, sharpened combat scabbard, masterwork smithing tools, 4 bells, two intended Koya gifts (Pocketed scarf, cold-weather gear), regional food (a bit of everything you mentioned plus Hákarl), raw smithing materials. I will integrate it into the character sheet before the weekend is over.
Kyrademon has shared that Maya is finding the Lab scene baffling rather than revelatory. My apologies
I have been made aware, on multiple occasions, that my preferences for OOC first are distinctly in the minority in this group. In a roundabout way of logic, I was trying not to force a burdensomely long and undesired OOC discussion onto you, especially since Hrithik's turning the corner and ultimately being more restrained has been taken firmly in hand by the four main NPCs. Sorry if the end result has felt bait and switch rather than insightful and influential over Hrithik's messed up psyche.
Hrithik has been increasingly playing the role of the Fool, and is increasingly perceiving Melinda in the role of the Queen. He couldn't give any Peer more authority to issue commands to him if he tried. (On the queen look-alike comment: seriously, look up a picture of Abrogail. Pale skin, green eyes, goth-black hair, teenaged leader possibly bearing unusual essence in her blood. Except for being diametrically opposite people, they are very similar to each other.)
Hrithik's pickle thing has been about demonstrating Inferiority. Acting the Fool gives permission to prank, but relegates the prankster to dead-last social status. Since the pickles are also redeemable Favors, post-Kopparberget, they are effectively moderately valuable Gifts, from a Fool, demonstrating his subservience.
Thus the laugh thing. Hrithik has been setting up situations where he is supposed to be laughed at ... but instead Melinda has been offended, and wary, and uninterested. Hrithik is using Melinda's spell to convey what he has been doing the past few days.
Yes, Hrithik finding scary powerful angry women hot is obviously messed up, but it is sincere. The more Melinda facially looks just like Liothonae with her expressions of anger and irritation, while looking just like Abrogail with her Appearance and bearing, the hotter Melinda becomes to Hrithik ... because she appears similar to powerful women who demanded and commanded his respect.
Melinda can smash Hrithik with the "Just Like Mistress" hammer if she wants. Melinda, even more powerful right now with her granted Superior Peer status, can punch him in the nose, or spit in his eye, or just simply properly Chelishly laugh in his face, and for all his words he will have to take it and acknowledge her higher station.
If she just snaps and Rages at him, he is completely hers. If she points out his emulation of Mistress, he disintegrates. If she walks away hurt, he shatters. For all his words, he is broken and not yet fully reordered at the moment. All of the real power to remake things radically, or not, in the Alchemy wagon, is Melinda's to choose.
Mel will never play the Mistress card. It would cause too much pain, and it isn't in her to do that.
Raging would be a bit ooc in this moment, but doable. But frankly, she doesn't want Hrithik. And I think it would make this game very unfun for Alaric. (Which does matter to me.)
However, Mel's most IC action, would be to be hurt. However, Mana has an issue with shattering someone. And doing so to ANOTHER character would greatly screw up Mel.
I have some thoughts here. Unfortunately, I have to step out right at this moment, so I will weigh in when I get back if it still seems like it might be helpful for me to do so.
Hrithik has set his character up to have a breakdown in this scene; Melinda does not particularly want her character to be placed in the position of giving another character a breakdown at this point, if ever.
Possible solution:
Melinda's potential action was going to be along the lines of (with some potential additions or variations): At end of speech, drop spell, say how much pain Hrithik has caused by what he said, start to leave. Hrithik has said this action would indeed trigger a breakdown.
My suggestion would be to make a slight variation on this action --
Instead of "start to leave" -- leave.
Don't wait to see his reaction. Don't give him time to respond. Don't allow him the opportunity to affect you emotionally any more in the scene, positively or negatively, to cause you to feel pity or shame or regret or angst or responsibility or whatever his breakdown would make you feel. Be hurt, get out. You don't know how he responds, and assume it is whatever you would assume the normal Hrithik response to be.
Say your piece and get out. Hrithik has his breakdown alone, and Melinda never knows about it.
Comments/thoughts:
1) Hrithik, what would your reaction/response to Melinda going forward be following such an occurrence? She seems to have some concerns about how this is going to play out long term.
2) I believe events in another scene will soon lead to Hrithik making the "won't eavesdrop any more" statement to Melinda at a different time not may days later, eliminating that concern from this particular scene. Hrithik, please confirm if so.
3) Melinda, to check in, how would this scene affect your response to Hrithik going forward?
4) Assuming the answers to the above three questions are acceptable to both sides, is this how you would like to proceed, or would one or both of you like to suggest something different?
Mel will never play the Mistress card. It would cause too much pain, and it isn't in her to do that.
Raging would be a bit ooc in this moment, but doable. But frankly, she doesn't want Hrithik. And I think it would make this game very unfun for Alaric. (Which does matter to me.)
Mel doesn't have to want him for him to be hers to do with as she pleases. Queen of Rage leaves Hrithik "intact" but makes him subservient to Mel. Understand if that's not a place desired, but it is definitely an option on the table.

However, Mel's most IC action, would be to be hurt. However, Mana has an issue with shattering someone. And doing so to ANOTHER character would greatly screw up Mel. So... what options are you giving me here?
Does it change Mana's opinion about shattering someone if part of that person desperately wants to be shattered, and if that part of that person is trying to get back to the mind-state with grandpa Rokuro, full of anger and awareness, in a deliberate effort to be properly broken all the way, and therefore more properly rebuildable?
Would it change Mel's opinion if Destroying Him to Save Him was in fact the best possible option for his work toward redemption? Would that make it something that wouldn't screw her up?

Don't wait to see his reaction. Don't give him time to respond. Don't allow him the opportunity to affect you emotionally any more in the scene, positively or negatively, to cause you to feel pity or shame or regret or angst or responsibility or whatever his breakdown would make you feel. Be hurt, get out. You don't know how he responds, and assume it is whatever you would assume the normal Hrithik response to be.
Say your piece and get out. Hrithik has his breakdown alone, and Melinda never knows about it.
Just abruptly leaving, whether hurt or angry, will piss the hell out of Hrithik ... get him into a truly towering rage - "she really isn't as "strong" as Abrogail", to his read of it. But he's established enough Subservience that it would not be his place to run after her and castigate her once she has ended the interaction. Quickly enough he will have to ask why his Queen left him so rudely, and will only have her final words to focus on.
Cycling between rage at those words and understanding of those words should make him mutely angrier yet more understanding with each cycle. Quickly enough, that leads back to Brinewall Vault, he can emotionally explode and intellectually put it together himself. Explosion has nowhere to go but him. Boom.

1) When Hrithik gets his head screwed on right, post-breakdown, his immediate space will be that she is even *stronger* than Abrogail and Mistress. They ruled their systems but they were still bound and enslaved by their systems. She just completely busted free - obviously more powerful.
Given the conversation that the breakdown flows directly into, Hrithik's next interaction with Melinda would be to apologize for eavesdropping ... barely avoiding tears and blubbering and probably over-gifting her at the same time. His long-term response would be inverting the She is My Superior dynamic from creepy devil lust/love to just Love, in the friendly and spiritual senses. He will feel ridiculously indebted to her, as he feels ridiculously indebted to Ameiko and Rokuro.
Beyond that, there will probably now be a rather extreme costuming change come the end of Kopparberget, and a rather scathing series of opinions toward Hrithik That Was.
2) Yes, absolutely. The breakdown will probably trigger one scene with Lio, then preface and frame and suffuse the scene after that. Hrithik will absolutely follow the guidance in that scene, possibly up to and including doing an apology at an embarrassing time (middle of camp, etc.).

Happy to proceed this way. Also happy to proceed with Full Breakdown on screen with Melinda staying for it. Also happy to proceed with No Breakdown but Hrithik subservient to Melinda outside of the Lab Wagon in a messed up lust/love/respect place. All of it brings his spy/spotter behaviors to an end, and each is a fine, if different, journey for me.
Okay, I am inclined to go with my original instinct for Mel.
3) Honestly, she doesn't like structures of the dominant/subservient style that Hrithik seems to depends on. She'll accept someone as an equal, or but it's not in her to lead... and obviously not really in her to follow either. Mel will be fine. guilty at the breakdown, but if she can fix it, as opposed to the Lio one where nothing she could do did any good... she'll be okay.
Sorry for the circumstance being surprising and less than comfortable on a player level. Would you like the potential blubbering to follow in a public or a private place?
People seem to be leaning against getting a supply wagon Right Now, but leaving it open for Karlsgard.
Any thoughts on getting Reinforcements for a wagon? I know Tollin is in favor, so I think that's two votes for right now.
Myri has made it publicly known

that she has funds she is looking to contribute towards the caravan again. It's merely a matter of deciding what they/we want and what can be afforded. Anyone interested in additional upgrades above and beyond what we decide to pull from the caravan fund should probably check with her also.
GM:
also, she would make a point to know if there are additional storage spaces not being used before we leave Kopparberget. If there are, she would buy one more lot of stores and perhaps something else for the caravan on her own if they are not filled and her funds are not requested for other uses. She is a bit short on being able to get campsite traps on her own (though she will consider selling off some of her things if there are 2 storage spaces left unfilled)...and next level, she actually can start placing two of her own traps.
Of course she will clear things with Sandru first.
I think i've got it finagled to -1 consumption, half of the time, assuming tollin is willing to drive half the time so Kalimac can scout half the time.

Assuming that our consumption is reasonable, I am Entirely In Favor on Reinforcing a wagon. With no preference as to which is Reinforced next (since the fortune-teller wagon is already Taken Care Of).
...and out of curiosity, since Rhost might be taking time off from Cooking to Craft, can we get it to -2 (even if in a non-ideal fashion)? Or should we put up extra consumables?
Silmemir can put a rank into Survival instead of perception to become a scout next level if that will help.
Rhost:
Myri is planning on purchasing at least one extra set of Store (which equates to 10 units of provisions) which could take care of short term crafting needs. If you have longer term plans for crafting you will have to ask Ry or someone who knows the rules better. I'm planning on making my determination on what Myri will do in conjunction with Sandru after we know what kind of storage space we have left
If Rhost is going to inflict Hákarl on us, we may have to. ;-)
I think that might result in an alignment slip. Rhost: CE cook. "Who wants kitten broiled in the tears of orphans? How about papercut pie garnished with the rejection letter from a safety publisher? Pan-seared genocide maybe?"

It's not like Rhost is serving casu marzu here (and if you don't know, I recommend not looking it up). Or durian.
Although I will say that it has taken me longer to find a recipe that includes hákarl (other than "drink with ice-cold brennivín") than any other ingredient to date.
Most people still seem to be happily Kopparbergeting or catching up on flexed conversations, so I'm probably going to leave things in town for a little while yet to let things catch up some more. And it'd be good to get the Caravan details completely settled first before moving on anyway, if possible. But moving on will happen at some point, though, no matter what's going on with those (shocking, I know).
If stalking away is what she wishes to do, that's really all I'd need from her to initiate Meltdown. :-)
Hrithik's Vault meltdown got immediately interrupted and intervened on by Liothonae. His first consensual anything ever put the breaks on the disintegration. Ry and I have been working out other ways to move him forward, because Hrithik has been "half broken" ever since. All the acceptance and care from Lio isn't doing him any favors where his flaws are concerned.
Melinda stalking out after he gave her the Last Word will definitely engage the "finish the meltdown" angle, and speed up the transformational process significantly.

Actually I had figured it was before the crafting time. Unless she intervenes literally immediately, like she did the first time, it would be much too late whenever Lio arrives. He'd be long past shattering when she showed up.
Quick note -- Next weekend (October 15/16), I am going to be taking a weekend trip to Munich in the interest of seeing what it looks like when an entire town is hungover. My posting that weekend between Saturday morning and Sunday night my time will be very limited if it happens at all.
However, looking ahead in the module, that by coincidence does happen to fall, by my estimation, right about when you should be in the middle of fighting off a savage horde of [SPOILER DELETED], so I actually don't think it will slow things down TOO terribly much.

The old town in Munich is fun. They've got some great shops. You could get a Dirndl! There was even an Egyptian store there last time I was in Munich. And a good sized book store, and castles! I have a cuckoo clock from Munich. The old fashioned kind. Anyway, I ramble. Have fun!
