”Idun… I do not like this” - Grenz nodded at their companion who decided to stay behind - ”Take absolutely no unnecessary risks - remember there are still others involved in all of this. And they may come sniffing around” - he added - ”Deal?”

At the gates.

”At last… I am sick and tired of listening to these two”

At the Sandpoint Gates

Khamul nor Grenz recognize the two men approaching them, but as you have become somewhat familiar with the town’s militia, these two certainly look out of place and by now, most of the town, or at least the militia, would recognize who you were. It is possible that some of the guard from Magnimar have been taking shifts though and they would not know you as well.

The guard speaking adjusts his helmet and then says, ”Henri, go and get Sheriff Hemlock, he’s probably at Kaye’s by now. You two wait here.”

About twenty minutes later, after being made to wait outside Sandpoint, Henri returns with Sheriff Hemlock, who seems to be more irritated than usual. Looking at your haul, he grunts, ”Is that Erin Habe, the doctor at the Sanitarium? I hope you two have a good explanation for why you have a celebrated citizen of these lands in custody.”

Habe’s Sanitarium

The howls remind her of the voices she would hear in the snows up north. When the winter winds blew from the witch's lands, there was more than just natural whistling. She tries her best to figure out what she can nonetheless.

"Thank you. I'm going to try to administer something to the patients soon. We'll see if it works. I doubt I'm his equal, but I can at least try." Idun nods in thank of the simple meal, accepting it with only a mild wince at the mug's scent.

M Halfling Medium (Fiendkeeper) 5

Khamul gestures at the other prisoner "Well Sheriff, this other fellow here is Cai. The necromancer who was practicing in the basement of the sanitorium, with the connivance of Dr. Habe... It's a bit of a tale and should probably be told in a more private place than this..."

I'm guessing we will head off to the sheriff's place and have a chat there...

Assuming that we go someplace private:

Khamul tells the tale: "All right Sheriff Hemlock, sit yourself down and get comfortable. After our meeting this morning with you and the mayor, we headed off to the sanitorium to get Habe's input on these ghoul things. We got there, and had a bit of chat with Habe, who didn't have much useful to say: he has 2 patients muttering about ‘he is coming’ and refusing to eat. He wasn’t having a lot of success with them, and didn’t think it was mass hysteria. We got to see one of the 2 patients, a Mr Sevilla, we tested him with holy weapon balm and he turned out to be a ghoul. The facility had an infestation. So we put that down, killing a another bunch of ghouls… and Habe started acting all squirrely. We were already suspicious at how blasé he seemed about a bunch of ghouls, so some blatant threats and arm twisting later, he was willing to take us downstairs to the basement, to meet his heh-hem ‘arrangement’. His arrangement is Cai here. The gist of it that Cai is experimenting with reanimating the dead. He was paying Habe to rent the basement, and buying the corpses of those who died in the sanatorium for his reanimation experiments. I’m pretty sure that creating the undead is a serious crime around here; it is where I’m from. But, they claim to have nothing to do with the ghoul outbreak we are seeing, in fact they figure it was a threat to their operation and offered us a deal. We would 'thin their numbers and finding the culprit who wishes to ruin our operation' and they would support us with a bolt hole and 'all that they know'. We decided we didn’t like the deal, so we changed it. We took Habe and Cai prisoner, put their zombie minions down and talked the orderlies at the sanatorium into keeping the place in hand overnight, while we hauled these cretins back to Sandpoint for you to sort out…” He pauses at this point to haul out the evidence: Cai’s book and notes and whatnot. He continues ”and there’s something more going on. We took the time to look through Habe’s office and found the accounts for the sanatorium. Unless he’s faking the accounts, an anonymous someone is dumping thousands of gold sails into the place every month, which is crazy enough to buy a room at the sanatorium. It also makes me all kinds of curious about what the money’s going to…” At this point, Khamul digs out Habe's journal and the sanatorium accounts for Belor to look at.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

At the Sanitarium:

The orderly listens to Idun’s plan, but is hesitant. ”Pardon miss, but isn’t experimenting on these patients exactly what you are trying to stop? Look, we barely know each other and we,” he indicates the other orderlies with a wave of his arm, ”trust that you are to free us. Testing on more of them doesn’t look so good in that way”

Sheriff Hemlock’s office, Sandpoint:

After having the other guards take custody of the two men, the Sheriff leads you back to his office, a place you have been many times. He listens intently to what you say, nodding and rubbing his chin, which has a strong evening shadow, as if he hadn’t slept in a while. When you finish, he looks up and shakes his head. ”This sounds far worse than what we thought. I am glad we brought the Magnimarians in. We could use the help. In the meantime, there are two problems I need to deal with. One, I will need to go through these documents and figure out who is behind all this. I thought we had them in custody. Secondly, what are we going to do about the Sanitarium? We can’t just leave those patients there to fend for themselves. Not only that, not too long after you left this morning, Maester Grump, one of our local farmers, came in from the fields covered in mud and cuts. He was screaming something about his scarecrows coming to life and killing his cattle. With all this talk of ghouls, it has to be related.” He sighs, as if the weight of all of Varisia was on his shoulders. ”We haven’t yet had another murder here in Sandpoint, but I don’t think for one moment that this is over. I need you to do some digging and see about what we can do for the people at the Sanitarium. Someone has to take care of them. Your mandate still stands though. Find out who is behind this recent trouble and put a stop to it.” He reaches under his desk and pulls out a piece of parchment. ”Mayor Deverin wanted me to make sure you were being properly compensated for the work you have been doing so far. This is for your team.” After signing his name, he slides over the writ. It reads that you are owed six hundred gold sails from Sandpoint’s treasury. ”It’s the best we can do, considering. Let me know the moment you have something. I have to compose a letter to Magnimar and brief the mayor on these new events.” He then turns to his work, rubbing his head with his hands.

M Halfling Medium (Fiendkeeper) 5

Geez these are getting to be enormous posts. We need to do some planning. We also need to recruit help outside the party - too many jobs, too many skills we don't have.

Sheriff Hemlock’s office, Sandpoint:

”I hope you have some coffee on, because it’s going to be a working night for all of us.” Khamul’s tone is grim despite the wisecrack. ”We have lots of things to do. The sanatorium issue first. Idun stayed out there, trying to keep the ghoul outbreak under control using Cai’s notes. I hope she and I will meet again, when we go out there again tomorrow morning. The orderlies appear at least temporarily content with their jobs, so the manpower is there. Although they claim to be compelled by the tattoos they’ve been given. So if you can find someone to be put in charge temporarily there, that’ll keep that fire under control for a week or two until a more permanent solution can be found. Maybe if you asked if Mirah, Gurin or both might be willing to go there to take charge for a bit as a mission of mercy? We should also take this Maester Grump along too, he could easily be infected too, and maybe Idun’s alchemy can treat him, what with her going over Cai’s stuff.”

He pauses to offer Belor a chance to speak, and then continues. ”The first tonight thing to do is to recruit some local expertise. First an accountant that you trust to go over the sanatorium’s books. What the hell was that money going to? Any hint as to where it was coming from? Like say was it letters of credit, and if so, which bank and what accounts? Was it chests of ancient coinage from this Thassilon? The other thing we need is trustworthy experts on the arcane. How much do you trust Master Gandethus from Turandurok academy or that Brodert Quink guy that people speak about? I lied to the orderlies today about understanding their claim that their tattoos bound them, and that I was sure we could help them. I’m both curious and worried about the answers about what’s going on there… I’d say send some of your guardsmen to pull in the people you trust and want to recruit.”

”The second tonight thing is interrogations. Did the Magnimarians send you anybody with interrogation skills beyond punching people in the face? I hope so, because we have lots of people to ask questions of: “ Khamul starts counting on his fingers: ”One, Habe – all about the money coming into the sanatorium. Two, that acolyte who was dealing with the blue-coat ghoul, what’s all that about? Three, blue coat himself; although I’m not figuring we’ll get anything out of him with conventional methods. Four, Red Fist, have you got anything more out of him today? Like who’s R.B. who’s X, and what’s this about an undead army?”

He pauses again (to let someone wants to interject if they want to), and then goes on ”Five, Cai the necromancer. Now him I’ve got a proposal for that you’ll need to thumbs up or down. He says him and Habe had nothing to do with the ghoul thing. Habe’s journal hints otherwise, he’s been dealing with a “ blue coated man who kept his face hidden in the night and who had a certain ‘unappealing aroma, but good manners’.”, which reminds me of our sewer slasher… But coming back on topic, Cai rings true to me when he says he’s got nothing to do with the ghoul thing. Now I’m pretty sure that animating the dead is the kind of thing that results execution in Magnimarian territories. But he hasn’t hurt anyone directly from what he’s said, so I’d like to propose a deal to him. He stays a prisoner and becomes our go to necromancy advisor, in return for which, rather than becoming a head shorter, he gets exiled to Mwangi or something when we’re done. But you and Mayor Deverin, and maybe higher would have to approve that…”

Savage Rifts RotRwT

It’s all about the role playing… I’m going to let Grenz interject if he wants and then I’ll post Hemlock’s part. Idun has some thinking to do as well.

Sanitarium:
"It's one thing to experiment on someone by watching and taking notes on how they die. It's another to try to help them without being sure you can pull it off. That said, I do agree in part. If I didn't already know they had just been infected with a disease that will kill them, yes, I'd never do this. It's not right but I can't just sit and do nothing and watch them suffer." Idun sighs, before answering.

Hard to tackle such long texts :D

Sheriff Hemlock’s office, Sandpoint:

Grenz stands to one corner with his arms folded over his chest - "Well for me this Cai and Habe need to go to justice for what they have done. Sure they can cooperate or whatever, and they are free to do so. Perhaps their sentence will not be as harsh if they do. Perhaps it will make no difference. That is their problem, and their decision to make" - he grunted.

"In the meantime, I think if the orderlies are paid, promised freedom from those tattoos and are asked to temporarily assist some representative from the Sandpoint Church in keeping things under control, they will do so"

"Interrogations and accounting are not my specialty, so I really have nothing to add on those. But I can see the importance of finding out who might have been funneling the money to the Sanatorium" - he added - "So if we have no one better at it, I do not mind doing some questioning" - the half-orc cracks his knuckles.

Sanitarium:
The orderly strokes his chin thoughtfully. ”You make a good point. I can help you give some to one of the patients, see if it works. If not, then no more until we can find a better solution. Let me know when you are ready.”/b] He then turns to leave, leaving Idun alone with the scant dinner and some moral quandaries to consider. It will take most of the rest of the evening to finish your first dose and be prepared to try it out.

When you are ready, the orderly takes you to a young woman who looks barely out of her teens. She has unkempt long dark hair and pale skin. Her eyes, when you see them, are polychromatic. She grins at you when she finally acknowledges your presence. You feel a bit unsettled at how she looks at you, almost as if she was deciding your fate for you. She holds stock still as you approach. The orderly said her name was Sara and that’s all they really know about her. You can see the bite mark on her forearm. You know, from what Khamul said, she may not have long until she turns…

Hemlock’s Office:
The sheriff, for his usual sense of gruffness and stoicism, seems genuinely worried at this point. [b]”You are right. We have a lot of ground to cover and not a lot of people to cover it with. Father Zantus can spare those two acolytes, and possibly more, but from your account of how they were when you were delving into the tunnels tells me this may be over their heads. Still, it’s not like Magnimar is going to send us anyone else soon. I’ll have a page go and tell him to send those two in the morning.”

He looks at Grenz as you are discussing how best to interrogate Habe and Cai. He gives a rare half smile. ”As much as I’d like to let you go in a beat a few heads around, I don’t think that either of those two will need much prodding before they give up what they know. It’s the rest of them Red Fist’s people that need some pushing around. I feel like these two things are connected, but I can’t put anything solid down on it. The man himself has shut down like you wouldn’t believe and since that priest was taken by his own people, well, you already know how I feel about that.” He glares at an empty glass on the table.

”I’m starting to understand my predecessor a bit more. No, I haven’t gotten anything more. With the recent murders and other smaller things, I have had my hands tied to the very walls of this place and have since taken to passing out things I normally would do myself. Look, for all intents and purposes, you are my deputies. If you need to rough a few folk up, just don’t make it too messy. Otherwise, Deverin and the rest of the money of this town will be breathing down my neck and you know how things trickle downhill. Clear? I’ll see to this ledger. I know just the person and he’ll do it or I’ll bring him in just to make me feel better.” He trails off and waves his hand dismissively.

Not sure why, but I can't get the last spoiler, "Hemlock's Office" to open... I'll try again tonight.

Same here.

M Halfling Medium (Fiendkeeper) 5

Yep, still won't open. Hemlock's Office has been eaten by a grue...

If it is pitch dark, you are likely to be eaten by a grue :)

I can’t seem to edit it either. It’s been too long. That’s odd because when I previewed it before posting, it seemed to work. I will have to rewrite that part again.

Hemlock Office, again:
Sheriff Hemlock puts his hand to his head and runs it vigorously. The veins in it seem to be pulsing heavily. ”Look, you’re right. I had hoped this was going to something simple, but it seems that the more we dig into it, the more we unearth.” He sighs and then continues.

”I will get Father Zantus to send those two and maybe a few more if he can spare them to get the place under control, at least in the interim. As you said, it is only a temporary solution, but it will help, assuming the orderlies you mentioned can be kept in line.”

When Grenz finishes his part, he cocks and eyebrow and then shakes his head. ”While I appreciate the enthusiasm, those two probably won’t put up much of a fight, physically at least. Though Habe and this other one might have access to a barrister, in which case, that is a fight we may not be able to win. Especially with the money involved. On that part, I know someone who can look into that and he will do it or spend more time here with the others.”

”After that priest left, Red Fist and his boys clammed up. I haven’t been able to get much out of them, one because I don’t have the time and two because I feel like that priest has something big over them. Look, for all intents and purposes, you two are my deputies and as such, if you need to ruffle a few feathers to get this figured out, then do it, but make it clean. If it gets messy, Deverin and the rest of the money of Sandpoint will be breathing down my neck and you know stuff rolls downhill. Clear?”

Sanitarium:
"... I'm sorry, but you've been infected. I'm going to try to help. I... I can't be sure. But I promise I'll do my best to help you survive." Idun's eyes hang low, barely able to meet Sara's. Idun moves closer, reading the dose of what she desperately hopes is medicine.

M Halfling Medium (Fiendkeeper) 5

Ok, we got to town at 1938, so it's got to be about 2000 now...

Hemlock's office:

"Yeah, stuff rolls downhill, it's the way of the world. Well, do what we can and hope for the best. Ok Sheriff, you haven't said that you'd blackball either Gandethus or Quink, so we will bring them both in on the problem of the tattoos. With respect to the accountant, someone has to be keeping the town ledger and we need to tell Mayor Deverin what's up anyways... Can you send guardsmen to ask Gandethus, Quink, Mayor Deverin and the town accountant to meet us for a nightcap in the backroom at the Rusty Dragon? You may as well come too, you look like you could use it."
Assuming Sheriff Belor agrees and sends the guardsmen with invitations...

Khamul (?and presumably Grenz?) will hightail it to the Rusty Dragon and ask Bethana to open the backroom for a bit of a parley. (Bringing Cai along, hooded so that he won't know where he is going or if Habe is along.) He'll also beg a plate of whatever the kitchen is cooking. Assuming he has some time before the interested parties get there, he will alternate scarfing down the food with sketching pictures of the tattoos that the orderlies showed him...

I figure my proposed meeting will be at about 2030; it's a pretty small town for finding people. The plan for the meeting : I propose brief everyone on what was found at the sanitorium. Then put Quink and Gandethus researching the tattoos and how to remove them (and send them off). Hand the sanitarium accounts to the town accountant and tell him to figure out whatever he can about where the money was coming from and what it was going too (and send him off to work as well). Then I propose to get Kendra's buy in on offering Cai a deal, and then offer him said deal to sell out Habe. Whether that succeeds or not, then it's back to the jailhouse to interrogate Habe, Red Fist and the acolyte (the one who got his throat cut)...

Savage Rifts RotRwT

I am going to do two separate posts, to see if I can prevent what happened to the last double spoiler.

Sanitarium:
Sara, for her part, only watches intently as you take the medicine in the needled syringe and prepare to inoculate her. She seems almost fascinated by what you are doing. Out of the corner of your eye, you can see the orderly clenching and unclenching his fists nervously.

Sara watches as the needle goes into her skin, not even flinching. It is all you can do to keep from shaking as concerned as you are. Without a whimper, Sara smiles as you withdraw the needle. At first there is no reaction, but as she watches you, you can see her eyes start to well up with a dark red substance. Her facial expression changes to something less serene and you can almost feel as if she is fighting something. That’s when you notice that her veins are starting to turn a gray color, visible even in the candlelight and against her already pale skin. For a moment, you think you hear a low growl escape her lips. Before you can register it, she lunges at you.. Make a DC 13 Reflex Save please

Hemlock's office:

Sorry Khamul, but:

"I do not think this is a good idea - taking them to the Rusty Dragon" - Grenz grunts - "Bethana has shown us nothing but hospitality and respect. Neither she, or the establishment should be dragged into this. Dealing with these individuals is our responsibility, not hers"

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Rusty Dragon:
Starday, 19 Lamashan 4707, 21:15pm. 42 degrees, Clear Bethany, as sweet as she is, seems to be in a bit of a huff as she brings out the remainder of the evening’s meal and some drinks. The roast duck is a little dry, since she had to warm it up, but the potatoes are still spicy, which helps. Sheriff Hemlock is the first to arrive at the meeting, followed by Mayor Deverin quite a bit later. Before she gets there, the Sheriff says, ”Brodert and Gandethus both seem to think that we can wait until morning to speak with them, at least according to what I was told by the messengers that went to retrieve them. We will have to discuss this with them then.”

When the Mayor arrives, she looks at Sheriff Hemlock with a quizzical look and then at the rest of you. ”I feel as if my dinner must have a good reason for being interrupted, or else you would have sent a better invitation to this one.” She gives a diplomatic smile and then sits with the rest of you, protocol vanishing with a swig of the ale at her place. ”Well, out with it.” About then, two guards usher in Cai, hooded, bound and gagged. You are sure you do not want to hear what he might be saying. The Mayor’s eyes go wide. ”So this is not one of your many social calls, Belor. Who is this?”

”His name is Caizarlu, he seems to have a font of money coming from somewhere and is funneling it to support our dear friend Habe at the Sanitarium. We are going to get to the bottom of this mystery and try to prevent another Unpleasantness.”

As if on cue, another walks into the room and you recognize him immediately. His cocky smile and the way he smoothies his thin mustache as he looks about the room may not be unique, but he seems to think so. Ah, well it is about time you invite me to one of your late night parties, Sheriff. I was starting to think you didn’t like me.” He grins and takes a seat, nodding in your direction. ”At least I am among some friends.”

Mayor Deverin looks askance at him and then at Belor. ”You had better have a good reason for bringing him in on this.”

As Belor starts to speak, Jubrayl Vhiski cuts him off. ”My dear mayor, it may come to you as no surprise, but I do so love Sandpoint and would hate to see anything untoward happen to it. You know, as well as Mister Sheriff here knows, that I am your best bet in finding where money disappears to. If you want this thing figured out quickly, and I am sure you do, let me handle it.” He smiles something almost predatory. The Mayor and Sheriff Hemlock look to the two of you.

”He’ll find it and he’ll do it nice like, or I spend another night going through his finances.”, Belor says.

”No need to get personal now Sheriff, we’re all friends, right?”, Jubrayl looks at you.

M Halfling Medium (Fiendkeeper) 5

At the Rusty Dragon:

Before the meeting
"Bethana, you're a dear and a charmer and I love you dearly", Khamul is effusive with praise at her help and the food. He makes a mental note to tip especially well…

*****

At the meeting
"Ok, first things first, a short summary of today's events. We went out to the Sanitorium to talk to Habe about ghouls. While we were there, we found out that Habe had cut a deal with a necromancer – to support and house his experiments in reviving the dead in return for money. To introduce our guest here, “ Khamul points to the bound and gagged Cai, ” this is Caizarlu the necromancer in question. This discovery prompted us to take Habe and Cai prisoner, and search the Sanitorium. Currently Idun is at the Sanitorium, trying to use alchemy to fight the outbreak of ghoul disease that is occurring among the patients. Cai and Habe claim that they’re not part of the ghoul stuff that’s breaking out.”

Khamul takes a swig of ale and continues ”Ok, I asked Sheriff Belor to get an accountant who’s trustworthy because we found and looked at the Sanitorium ledgers and someone has been putting a lot of money into the place – thousands of sails…” he looks to Jubrayl and puts the accounts in front of Mayor Deverin. ”An accountant I am not, and you may be trustworthy and skilled enough to hand this job; someone needs to look through the books and figure out whatever they can about where the money was coming from, and where is it going… So that’s why you’re here. I don’t know you, so I’m going to let the Mayor and the Sheriff make that call.”. He pauses (casts guidance) and looks at Jubrayl…

Sense Motive on Jubrayl: 3d6 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3, 4, 5) + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 23
2 ranks +3 trained +1 trait +2 spirit Bonus +2 seance boon+1 guidance

Yeah, that’s probably running into a nice high bluff skill on Jubrayl’s part, but still got to try

Another swig of ale and ”That brings us to our other guest this evening, Cai.” Khamul’s grin is mirthless, ”I’m fairly sure that reanimating the dead is a capital crime in these parts, and Cai is surely guilty. That said, talking to him has me believing him that he’s not involved in this ghoul fuss. By the by, I’m not so sure about Habe; there’s some stuff in Habe’s journal that raises questions. But back to Cai, we however, need as much help as we can get with this ghoul thing, especially the necromantic and arcane questions; neither myself, nor Grenz, nor Idun has much of a clue in those directions. So I’d like to propose a deal. For the duration of the ghoul emergency, Cai becomes our necromancy consultant. In return, when this mess is settled, Cai keeps his head and hands and gets exiled, shipped off to the Mwangi or somewhere. We’ll even send his book and his bonded object along to be given to him when he’s dropped off wherever.” He looks directly at Cai ”We won’t trust you with your stuff here. It’s in your best interest to give your best advice, as if we come to a bad end, well, you’ll be staying in a jail cell, and sooner or later the locals’ll decide to put you down.” He turns back to Belor and Deverin ”Again, I don’t have the authority to make that deal, so it’s your call if it gets offered”. He pauses (casts guidance) to assess Cai while Belor and Deverin no doubt have a think..

Sense Motive on Cai: 3d6 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1, 5, 3) + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 20
2 ranks +3 trained +1 trait +2 spirit Bonus +2 seance boon+1 guidance

He’ll wait for Belor and Deverin to make the call, and assuming they say yes, he’ll un-gag Cai to let him say his piece…

Diplomacy to get his proposal accepted: 3d6 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (3, 3, 1) + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 = 17
+3 trained + 4 ranks (trickster's edge)+ 1 cha + 2 spirit bonus (trickster)

and the scene comes to a stop. We need decisions from Belor and Deverin obviously, and then we need to know if Cai’s in. After that, one way or another, it’s time to interrogate Cai, then go back to the prison and interrogate Habe, the acolyte, red fist and maybe blue coat … It’ s gonna be a long night.

Easily fixed.

Town Hall, Backrooms:

Looking over Jubrayl, Khamul knows that there is probably a lot this man is hiding, especially since the sheriff keeps glaring at him. Still, whatever it is appears to have nothing to do with the subject at hand, based on his seeming confidence in his ability to help. Noticing you looking at him, he smiles. ”Don’t you worry little one. The Sheriff and I go way back and Sandpoint is my home. I have no interest in seeing a bunch of ghouls take over. It’s bad for everyone, including me and mine. Now if I can just see those ledgers..”

”Just a minute.” Mayor Deverin firmly puts her hand on them. ”I haven’t agreed to this yet. Sheriff, I know you mean well and I know you are trying to give Grenz here a second chance, but bringing Vhiski and most likely his boys in? That’s risky, especially for you.”

”Which is why I brought him in. If there is one thing I do trust about him, it’s that he has a vested interest in continuing to operate here, despite his less than savory business practices. You trust my judgement, I’m asking you trust me on this. He’ll do his job. He knows the consequences to do otherwise.” Belor makes a pointed look at Jubrayl, who responds with a ‘who me?’ Look.

The Mayor thinks for a moment and says, ”Fine, but one misstep, and only one, and you find someone else. Now about this other miscreant. The punishment for the practice of necromancy is life in prison, as death is more of a reward for them. That being the case, either way, he will want to cooperate because if I know Belor, he can make that sentence a lot longer and a lot more difficult if people do not cooperate.”

”I’d rather just take him out and feed him to the Pharasmin’s that were just here, but I don’t believe that will work to our advantage, as satisfying as it might be for me. Khamul here is right though, if he is willing to cooperate, we need to use what he knows in order to stop this threat to Sandpoint.”

As you remove the gag from Cai’s mouth, the necromancer speaks through his teeth. ”You bring an old man, bound and gagged to meet with people who would rather kill him and yet expect me to work with them? You are bold and foolish, a common combination. No matter, what I have left to tell you will only help if you plan on becoming my apprentice at some point, but I will digress what I am able, considering a life in exile is better than a life in captivity. Besides, I hear that Mwangi is a beautiful place and they aren’t so unforgiving of science.”

From what you can tell, either Cai is amazing at lying, or he is genuinely willing to help, if he would be sent away to a far off continent.

No worries Idun.

Sanitarium:
You recoil back as Sara attempts to sink her teeth into your arm. She continues to gnash at you, but the orderly is already there to restrain her. In mere moments though, the color starts to return to her face and her eyes gain a slight sparkle to them. Her face turns into a real smile as she says, ”Th..thank you.” The orderly looks surprised.

”She hasn’t spoken since she got here. I don’t know what you put in there, but it seems to have worked.”

Sara goes back to her quiet, but you notice she can’t help but to smile a bit when you catch her eye.

”I’ll stay and keep an eye on her if you want to try another.”

My paranoid player senses feel like I'm falling into a diabolical trap. But I think Idun would stay the course.

Sanitarium:
Idun seems anything but surprised at the volatile reaction. That some of their ghoul infections might be spreading so quickly was to be expected. But the reaction to the injection? Well, that was surprising.

"Uh... It should just be disease resistance? Maybe it eased pain." Idun pauses. She resolves not to treat anyone without an obvious bite. Just in case there's something fishy she couldn't figure out about Habe's medicine.

"I'll probably need your help for the next one too, let's lock it up for now and move on and then make the rounds to check on everyone after the first dose. Help should be on the way."

M Halfling Medium (Fiendkeeper) 5

At the town hall:

Khamul is pleased that we have some agreement on how to proceed. He unties Cai and offers him an ale (if he wants one). "Thank you Lady Mayor, sounds like an agreement to me. First questions for you Cai. What did you pay to Habe to get the sanitarium basement and where did the money come from? Don't forget that Jubrayl here will be going over the books." He pauses to give Cai time to answer fully.

@DM ShadowbloodMoon, does Cai's answer account for all the mysterious incomings to the Sanitorium's books?

*****

After Cai replies, Khamul turns to Jubrayl: "Have fun with the books. Hustle as fast as you can; I think we're chasing things that will get nastier the longer it takes. I really would like to know what was being done with all that money; it sure wasn't spent on upkeep at the Sanitarium."

He turns back to Grenz, Belor, and Cai. "Now for our work. We're going to hide Cai here's face with a mask and let him have a look at all our prisoners (Red Fist, blue coat ghast, acolyte who got his throat cut. The mask is so that they can't recognize Cai.) and then he can tell us if you've met any of them before and tell us all about it... After that, we get to start interrogating people. I think we'll start with Habe. Letting him see that Cai has cut a deal might just help convince him the jig is up and it's time to talk... After that, Cai can get his beauty sleep for the night, while we work the rest of them."

@DM ShadowbloodMoon, not sure how you want to handle the interrogations? Do you want to fully roleplay them? Also, if Habe breaks, we will pull the same mask stunt and find out if he recognizes blue coat ghoul (which I think he will from his journal...). Finally, I think I have come up with a threat that will work on a ghoul: The Cask of Amontillado, so we might get somewhere with blue coat.

Sanitarium:
You spend the last of the night inoculating two more patients who had been bitten, along with an orderly who had been bitten. The other patients react more appropriately to the idea of having a needle shoved in them, but the concoction you came up with seems to work for the time being. The true test will be the next night. It is difficult to catch any rest this evening, as you don’t know when Khamul and Grenz will return and at any time, your chemical could stop working and those you gave it to could turn. Still you take what rest you can, where you can. You basically are done for the night, but the other two are not. You can wait or we can move on to morning if you wish.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

I’m going to let Grenz interject if he wants to regarding your plans before posting the replies, as for the interrogations, we can do some rolling to get them done quickly and move on to the next step if you wish. Idun is pretty much done where she is at this point.

Sorry, pretty hammered with work. Will only be able to post later today. These huge posts take time to read through…

Khamul, you do realize Guidance is not an automatic bonus, right? And the spell itself has a verbal AND a somatic component?

At the Town Hall:

Grenz interposes himself between Khamul and Cai, before his companion can untie the necromancer - ”No. I am against releasing him, and I am against letting him go to exile if he helps us. So he stops being Sandpoint’s problem, to become someone else’s? Is that the plan?” - he looks at Khamul first, then at the others in the room - ”I say he cooperates as a prisoner, and hopes his assistance is taken into account when he is facing a judge. Plain and simple. Otherwise he rots in jail for his crimes. As it probably should be. Or so I’ve been said by better men than me ”

Savage Rifts RotRwT

I have taken into account Khamul’s psychic spell components, but as yet, those who noticed didn’t care or otherwise have other ideas about what is going on. I am going to let Khamul say his piece about Grenz’s actions, but here is Idun’s part.

Sanitarium:
You spend the night doing what you can to stay awake and between the walking around, exercising and even the occasional concoction from Cai’s lab, you manage it fairly well. At one point, you feel as if you are about to drift off, you could swear you see Sara standing in front of you if that strange smile of hers. She is holding out what appears to be a drawing of some kind. You awaken almost instantly, ready to call for orderlies, but she isn’t there. However, at your feet, is a picture that appears to have been drawn by a young child of a nice sunny day and two people walking hand in hand. Before you can reach down to pick it up, an orderly comes to find you. ”I hope you have gotten some rest. Someone is at the door demanding to see Mr. Habe. I don’t think they are from Sandpoint. I tried to explain that he is indisposed and to come back later, but they are insistent. I told them I would see what I can do.”

M Halfling Medium (Fiendkeeper) 5

At the town hall:

Ok, Khamul didn't have much to say in response to Grenz, which is why I haven't posted, but here it goes.
"I'm a stranger in town Grenz, but two things. First, if I've been reading what you and others have said around you right, you got a bit of ab bargain with Belor yourself, and you're living up to it. Second, I figure the decision is up to Mayor Kendra and Sheriff Belor..." With his piece said, Khamul pivots and makes an over to you gesture to the mayor and the sheriff.

At the town hall:

"Agreed Khamul, it is up to them. So perhaps letting them decide before you go ahead and release Cai?" - the half-orc raises an eyebrow.

My bad if I misinterpreted - I thought the agreement had been regarding Jubrayl :/ In any case, Grenz is against untying Cai anyway, at least until he is in a cell. So lets stick with the action?

Sanitarium:

Idun wonders if there's something magical about the girl... A ghoul doesn't get powers to phase through walls and influence dreams, right? Maybe she should ask Khamul. But she's quickly prevented from thinking about it for long as the situation develops.

Idun ponders for a few moments... then comes up with a terrible terrible idea. "Tell him that Habe needs five minutes. Then invite him into the basement. I'm going to call in a favor."

Heading down to the basement herself, she decides to for the first time since joining the heroes, adopt her Caprice persona. She pep talks herself. "Ok, so, think like an old evil alchemist..."

It seems her plan is to shift into her guise of a fey creature... and then pretend to be Habe somehow. Despite being the wrong gender, age, species, and knowing barely anything about Habe. At least she has her sword unpacked now for when this plan inevitably goes south.

"He's agreed to cooperate Grenz, ain't no need to keep making an old man hurt. Once we're done with him tonight, he's going in a cell for now anyways."

Not sure that (not untying him until he's in a cell) works 1) Carrots and Sticks - he's an old man who's been choked unconscious and then tied up and lugged around for 8 hrs. I'm pretty sure he's hurting and there's no need to make a guy who's agreed to cooperate suffer more. 2) I would like to use him as a psychological pawn against Habe - if he's untied and walking around with us, it's pretty clear we've cut a deal and thats cuts one more pillar from Habe's position... So unless you're dead set on not untying him, it's time to let him go.

M Halfling Medium (Fiendkeeper) 5

Assuming Grenz agrees, we are on to the interrogations. @ShadowBloodMoon Presumably these are combinations of Intimidate/Bluff/Diplomacy and Sense Motive checks... So I will give a you a general interrogation approach, and then each skill a roll per prisoner, in their own spoilers.
I am assuming as I control the pace of the conversation, I can use guidance easily... Feel free to adjust that out as a GM's call. Also, I figure that Grenz will kick in with aid another, but I will leave his rolls up to him and you can adjust afterwards.

At the prison, Habe:

I think Habe's an intellectual type who might just bend to offers of physical violence, so it's intimidate for him. I'll get Grenz to the looming with an aid another, so there won't be a size penalty on the roll... I will also bring in Cai for a bit, just to show that he's cut a deal...
"It's brass tacks time Habe, as you can see Cai's cut his own deal. Now you're gonna tell me everything or Grenz'll break your fingers and work his way up your arms. First until you scream and then until you talk..."

Intimidate: 3d6 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2, 4, 4) + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 21
+3 trained + 4 ranks (trickster's edge)+ 1 cha + 2 spirit bonus (trickster)+1 guidance

Sense Motive to Assess Answers: 3d6 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2, 1, 3) + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 17
2 ranks +3 trained +1 trait +2 spirit Bonus +2 seance boon+1 guidance

Things I particularly want to know - what about his meetings with blue coat guy (from his journal), can he confirm that's the ghoul we have in custody, where's the money all coming from, and where's it going...

At the prison, Red Fist:

Red Fist on the other hand, I'm figuring diplomacy
"Ok, we got problems and their your problems too. If we get overrun by ghouls, you're going to be in the larder as well... "

Diplomacy: 3d6 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2, 2, 2) + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 17
+3 trained + 4 ranks (trickster's edge)+ 1 cha + 2 spirit bonus (trickster)+1 guidance

Sense Motive to Assess Answers: 3d6 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2, 6, 1) + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 20
2 ranks +3 trained +1 trait +2 spirit Bonus +2 seance boon+1 guidance

Things I particularly want to know - anything at all he has on RB and X, the 'signers' of the notes to the bloody fists that we found. Especially are they the same guy?

At the prison, Acolyte:

The acolyte gets bluff, as Khamul won't start torturing religious figures until I'm either really desperate or have a direct OK from the local law...
"All right, we caught you dead to rights talking to that ghoul thing. He cut your throat to stop you from talking. Talk or things are gonna get ugly: What's the deal?"

Bluff: 3d6 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4, 5, 4) + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 24
+3 trained + 4 ranks (trickster's edge)+ 1 cha + 2 spirit bonus (trickster)+1 guidance

Sense Motive to Assess Answers: 3d6 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2, 3, 5) + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 21
2 ranks +3 trained +1 trait +2 spirit Bonus +2 seance boon+1 guidance

Things I particularly want to know - what was his deal with Blue Coat and why?

At the prison, Blue Coat:

Here, I will start with diplomacy, especially if it seems his own personality is in control, not the external whatever it was that seemed to take him over... If that fails, I will go to intimidate, proposing to 'Cask of Amontidallo' him.
"Hi, last time we talked, you were saying you had made a bad deal and were cursed and needed help. Talk to me about it, what's going on. What have you been doing. Maybe we can help you out with your problems..."

Diplomacy: 3d6 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2, 3, 2) + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 18
+3 trained + 4 ranks (trickster's edge)+ 1 cha + 2 spirit bonus (trickster)+1 guidance

Sense Motive to Assess Answers: 3d6 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3, 2, 2) + 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 18
2 ranks +3 trained +1 trait +2 spirit Bonus +2 seance boon+1 guidance

Assuming I need to try to force some cooperation out of him
"You know, I've been thinking about your kind. They all seem to claim some sort of incredible hunger. I wonder what would happen to you if we bricked you up in a stone cellar with no one to eat for a week ... or maybe a year... Will you eat yourself?"

Intimidate: 3d6 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3, 3, 6) + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 23
+3 trained + 4 ranks (trickster's edge)+ 1 cha + 2 spirit bonus (trickster)+1 guidance
again, if needed, I'll get Grenz to help out to avoid the size penalty

Things I particularly want to know - pretty much anything he can tell us... What's he been doing and why? What does he know about the power that seems to be controlling him? What was his 'bad bargain'?

At the town hall:
"I disagree from your assessment - agreement to cooperate to save one's skin does not warrant a more favorable opinion from me" - Grenz shrugged - "But do as you will"

Too much OOC for me Khamul, sorry - I will stick to the IC conversation ;)

Grenz gets a disbelieving look, "We tried to talk her out of staying, but she does have the orderlies... Running around in the dark with ghouls hunting seems like a really bad plan to me. Getting yourself eaten alive won't help anyone."

Seriously, this is really starting to sound like a B list horror movie. First Idun stays by herself at the Sanitarium, now you want to go running around in the dark, by yourself (as I'm doing the interrogations)...

To answer Grenz’s question, it is probably almost 11pm by now.

Sanitarium:
You quickly change into your guise as The Captivating Caprice and then into what passes for Habe from which you are going purely on memory. Which I will need a Disguise roll for.. Using the tools in the lab, you concoct your best kit and hope for the best as the orderly opens the door and you hear him say, ”Master Habe is down the stairs and is awaiting your arrival.” You then hear footsteps coming down and what sounds like someone whistling as the door above closes. The man you see in front of you is not who you might expect to see in such a place. While the small tusks protruding from his lower lip tell you his orcish heritage, the way he dresses makes him look as if he belongs up on the hill in Sandpoint, where all the other rich folk live. His accent tells you he is from out of town though but used to being among upper class company. Ah, dear Erin Habe. I had presumed you would be in your office at this time of day, but alas, I have to come to find you here, in your basement. It is rather odd, I suppose, but my arrival was a surprise for you to be sure. Nonetheless, I have been told that you have had visitors lately. I have come to see to their purpose.” He looks at you, awaiting a response.

SPlitting these up again to make sure we don’t have another reading issue.

Sandpoint Hinterlands, Night:
It is dark. Really dark. Even with your inherent ability to see in low light, once you leave the lights of Sandpoint behind, the forest grows dark, throwing shadows over the road you travel on. Perhaps it is your inherent battle instinct, or even simply knowing what might be out here, the hairs on your neck raise in constant alarm as you move down the road as quickly as you can towards the Sanitarium. As you go, you remember what the gate guards told you as you left. ”Be careful out there, the night tends to swallow people up.” You know that normally they would not have let anyone out this late, but as you are a member of the Sheriff’s Deputies, you are given free leave.

You come to a point in the road that leads off towards the farms and one that continues south towards the Sanitarium. As you start to continue on, you notice that to the East of you, towards the farms, it is quite a bit lighter than usual for being this late at night. You then see why. Not far off in the distance, something is on fire and your eyes can make out figures moving near it. You are not sure what is going on until you hear a woman’s scream..
