Rise of the Runelords: Anniversary Edition by DM KLS (Inactive)

Game Master KyleS

So I tried to run this late last year, but I had some life issues slow things down a bit and a bad moving experience that prevented me from running, but fear not! We're good to go here! So what am I looking for in this game? I've already got two characters that were able to return, and one person creating a new one. So I'm looking for a couple of people. We didn't get very far, and the players already in decided to go ahead and start from the beginning. The group currently consists of an Elf Paladin (Divine Hunter), a Gnome Cleric (Ecclesitheurge), and a Tiefling Magus (Eldritch Scion). So, for creation rules:

First and foremost: No 3rd Party. I don't run it in my games, so if you want to run something, it either must be found in a physical book on the PRD here on Paizo (yes, I don't trust the pfsrd20 site. I've found too much home brew supposedly published by Paizo). I will be okay if you can provide a link through the Archives of Nethys as the PRD isn't fully complete and I've yet to find inconsistency with them. This is not to say that I won't say no to ideas though. If you wanna try it, run it by me, but keep it practical and simple. If I'm to welcome new players because I always do, I don't want it to be something they can't wrap their head around and takes me 15 minutes to figure out how it works. Now on to the creation rules!

- This will be a 20 point buy for ability scores.
- Average starting gold for character class.
- 2 traits and a drawback. Campaign traits are not required, but if it's a trait that involves some background work, I will expect the work along with it. Example: the Rich Parents trait. Tell me how you got an extra 900 starting gold. I'm not going to just straight hand it to you, and it may not be 900. Also, make the traits tie into your character. The Fencer trait makes absolutely no sense if your character has never touched a blade.
- Please provide at least a brief background of your character and who they are. I favor stories over roles and stats. That doesn't mean the longer the story, the better the chance of getting in.
- If you have anything in particular that you want to incorporate, please ask. I'm sure I will get people who've played or own this AP that apply. That's fine with me as long as you keep character knowledge separate. But if you want to utilize something from the AP as part of your character, give a simple explanation of how it would tie with your character and we can go from there.

I'm sure you will all have questions, so please be free to ask. I don't have a deadline as of yet as things can fill very quickly, but I will be looking for at least the next couple of days. I look forward to seeing everyone's character ideas!

Posting interest. Thinking of making a conjuration focused Arcanist. Maybe dhampir for race.

Also posting interest. Classic Human Fighter with some personality.
Getting to work on the submission now. :)

I may very well have to submit a character for this. I haven't played any of RotRL but it's at the top of the wish list.

Color me interested as well, will post something tonight after work. Hunter Class, most likely, if pets are ok. RotR is one ice desperately wanted to get in on

Mr. Nevets here, and Vaeldon's my alias for this. Definitely human fighter, and looking for a melee. Been wanting to play this AP for forever.

Still fiddling around, but this should be mostly done. Human Arcanist with Occultist archetype, primarily geared towards control and summoning. As we level, I expect its role to expand to buffing and utility as well.

Runt is from a still born RotR campaign. I really like the character and it would be sweet to get her into another one that has legs.

So I have an aasimar oracle raised by Shoanti, and I was wondering if I could take the Shoanti tatoo trait? It's normally only available to humans with the Shoanti ethnicity, but given her background it would fit pretty well. Other than that she's all ready to go.

If it helps, taking the Scion of Humanity alt racial trait would allow you to count as human, thus opening up the trait.

I'd like to apply with a goliath druid. He's a modified version of a character that I made originally for Reign of Winter, but I liked him so much I've changed his background a bit and have tried to apply to a handful of RotRL games in the last few weeks, with no takers.

Mechanically, he's pretty simple, but I'm happy to send you links to anything that you aren't comfortable with, as everything he can do is found on the archives of nethys site.

Background:

1) Sven is from the enigmatic town of Sojourner’s Rest, in the Grungir forest in the Land of the Linnorm Kings. His adopted mother Freyja, was a kindly venerable Anhana that found him as bundled infant in the ruins of a town on the outskirts of the Mierani forest in Northern Varisia. Freyja overcame her natural inclination to avoid contact with humanoids and raised Sven to the best of her abilities by moving to Sojourner’s Rest and contracting help from the other fey of the city. When he got older, he would help the people of the Rest with tasks for big folks and would sometimes break up fights between larger fey. Sven did not take particularly well to formal instruction, and instead relied more on his instincts and physical strength to solve problems.
2) Sven is a tall Ulfen human with pale skin, white hair, and flinty black irised eyes. He keeps his hair long and braided, and his beard full but trimmed. He wears his clothes in an ulfen style, though he has adapted somewhat to the warmer climate of Varisia. He is quiet and terse in his dealings with other people, and sometimes resorts to physically imposing himself on other people instead of being more diplomatic. His mother tried to draw out his more outgoing side with some success, but he does not always know the right way to speak to people and can get frustrated when things don’t go his way. He tends to appreciate travel, new experiences, meeting new people, and is usually kind and generous. When battling though, he can lose himself and can be merciless.
3) When Sven got too big to fit in Sovereign’s rest comfortably, he was sent to Hagreach to learn the fighting styles common to the Ulfen. He worked as a scout and runner for Freyr Darkwine and the Blackravens out of Blackraven hall. While working as a scout, he failed to get a message of warning to the Blackravens in time to defend a small village north of Hagreach, and it was destroyed in a frost giant attack. Since then he’s been angry that the giant blood he might have in him might be merciless and rough, and dedicated to fighting them where he could, feeling guilty for his failure. He follows Desna nominally, though he isn’t a strict devotee. After the stint as a scout, he returned to Freyja and asked her about giants. She explained what she knew of them, but also explained that they were not common in the Grungir forest. She speculated that he may be long-descended from giantish folk of Varisia, but that if Sven wanted more information that he might have to venture south mountains where giants are more common and seek out some more neutral giants to question. She also explained where she found him, and a short history of the disappearance of folks in the town.
4) He travelled south to his ancestral home in Northern Varisia, south of the Steam River, and worked as a trapper in the Nolands, hunting and gathering food for the people in the area, and trying to ask around about where giants were more common and to get more information about giantish behavior and customs. He tried to learn techniques for how to fight them but was unable to get significant first-hand experience. While trapping, he accidentally entered the territory of a small tribe of reclusive stone giants in the Red Mountains. Without knowing, he hunted one of their oxen, thinking it was wild. A stone giant herder caught Sven and was angry, but recognizing Sven’s fear of the giant, and that the death was accidental, he let Sven go and told him to leave the area of the Nolands and not to return. Shaken and confused, Sven travelled further south to the area outside of Sandpoint on the rumor that there were more giants in the wilds outside of the small town, to lend his sword and maybe find more answers.
Step 2: Goals
1) Sven would like to unlock and uncover his giantish heritage, fight evil giants, including ogres, and act as an intermediary to prevent good/neutral giants from being killed erroneously.
2) Sven will become a goliath druid and unlock his giantish heritage. He may take a level of bloodrager as well!
Step 3: Secrets!
1) He does not actively tell people of his significant familiarity with the fey, but refers to fey creatures that he meets for the first time with nicknames like “Nuncle” and “Auntie.”
2) Sven’s family did not intend to lose him, they were killed. His family escaped but they assume he is lost forever to the dangers of the woods when they were able to return and find him.
Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.
Step 4: Relationships!
1) Freyja is Sven’s adopted mother. She is an Anhana of some renown with the ear of the king of the pixies, which is why Sven was spared a gruesome fate at the hands of the more malicious fey working for Bjarma.
2) Bjorn is a friend of Sven’s that worked in the Blackravens with Sven. Bjorn was a lithe, elven ranger that was very adept with a bow, and taught Sven everything he knew about archery. It wasn’t clear why Bjorn was working with the Blackravens, and Sven was never able to get a straight answer from him. They ranged together for a year, until Bjorn unexpectedly had to return deep within the Mierani forest.
3) If it had been up to the crone Bjarma, Sven’s infant entrails would have decorated her hut in the Lurkwood. Bjarma is responsible for the death of some of Sven’s family and abandonment of Sven near the forest, but nobody else knows this. Bjarma is a hag that has thirsted for Sven’s death ever since the intervention of Freyja many years ago. She hates Freyja and thirsts for giantish blood of Sven for her dark magic.
Step 5: Memories, quirks, and mannerisms!
1) Sven always starts out friendly with fey, though this is typically a cover as he sizes up their motivations. He also begins most encounters with giants cautiously and tries to read their intentions prior to instigating combat. He knows that not all giants are evil but doesn’t know who to trust or not trust (as he doesn’t know enough about giants yet).
2) Sven is unknowningly still haunted and traumatized by Bjarma’s attack. He was older than an infant when it happened but has suppressed his memories. He is very suspicious of crones, and quick to anger if they slight him.
3) Sven hates people being imprisoned or captured (for any reason). For enemies, he prefers to dispatch his foes with a clean kill. There isn’t always a legitimate authority to turn to while adventuring. He similarly believes in the freedom of folk to make their own path and suffer the consequences (for good or ill) of that path.

Hello! I have a Bard I'm writing up for this game. I've never played on the Paizo forums before, but I've played on other PbP venues, so I'm still figuring out the local peculiarities like where and how to put character sheet stuff. I've been gaming since dwarf was a character class, and am presently running a tabletop incarnation of Kingmaker which I've adapted to the Forgotten Realms.

i need to make a few adjustments, but this is the character i plan to submit.

two quick questions:

  • Are you saying we must take a drawback or that the option is available if we want a third trait?
  • Do you have a format preference for backgrounds? (e.g. summary, very short story, 10-min)

  • Alright. Slight change for my character submission. My apologies if it comes across as wishy-washy. Just wasn't feeling a connection with Vaeldon. Mr. Nevets here, applying instead with this charming Dwarven Fighter rather than the Human one.

    "Ispen Ironblood, at yer service."

Alright, so here's a list I've got so far now that I'm home from work:

    Submitted
    -Ralleck by Usmo
    -Runt by Miteke
    -Sven of Lfur by Litejedi
    -Delia Mae Rose by cuartroespada
    -Ispen Ironblood by MrNevets

    Interested
    -Uthraed
    -TheGoofyGE3K
    -Simeon
    -AmelioCasca

So to answer the few questions I've seen, if by pets you mean companions Goofy, then yes that's fine. I would like some explanation as to how you came across your companion. The more exotic, the more it needs to make sense. You don't just find a tyrannosaur and become instant best friends for life. I do try to stick towards RAW Simeon just for clarification purposes if people aren't aware of what it is you're referring to, but if you can make it stick with the background, then I can get with you about it if I need to. And it's both two traits AND a drawback Delia. Not a drawback for a third. I'm very much a story driven GM and I like for characters to have some sort of weakness that I can play with. Really though, I like to give characters something to help develop them as a character, so the more I can tailor something to make the characters seem like they're in a story and not a railroad script, the better.

As for backgrounds, they don't need to be complex. I'd prefer not to have to read a 432 page document (points for who can guess the reference). What I really need is who they are, where they came from, what they're doing in the area, and what they hope to accomplish. If you can get those while providing a good concept of the character, then I'll be okay. I've seen 2 simple paragraphs that made for what turned out to be great characters and I've seen 5 page histories that were so convoluted that the player couldn't even keep track of the basics. The more interesting the concept, the more keen I am to picking the character. Class roles tend to take a back seat for me unless I need to consider them.

So for now, here's a few notes I've made for the characters I've seen submitted so far. Ralleck, I like the backstory and there's enough for me to work with. If you want to flesh anything else out, I won't mind. Runt, you have an interesting backstory, but I will admit that I fear that could end up with some possible conflict with the party taking consideration to the story. I'll need something that can show me a little more that any conflict won't turn out to be PC vs PC or result in game ending drama. I'm perfectly fine with conflict, I don't expect characters to get along perfectly after the first encounter, but conflicts of interest tend to be something I'd like to avoid if possible. Sven, I need to clean and consolidate the background. It's really convoluted for me to read and make connections with what you have mechanically and how your backstory actually relates in part. Right now I've got way more questions than I need to have for a submitted character. Delia needs a background obviously, I hope I was able to answer the question. And finally, I like the little story there Ispen, gives me a great idea of who the character is, but I would like a little more info about his past so that I can get a better idea of who is who.

cool. yeah, see Sven is using the 10-min background format i was talking about. a lot of people like it, but you are apparently not a fan.

Gotcha. Will add a Flaw and more Background tomorrow.
    ~Cheers!

I think you misread me. I don't mind having to read a background. I don't want to read a novel, but I don't mind some length if a person wants to flesh it out. I've already asked for this. Let me show a better example. I'm not trying to demean you Sven, I'm just trying to help you out so that everyone can get a better picture. What I mean by convoluted is how you have it structured. I like the fact that you've gone step by step. It's a methodical approach and obviously shows the thought you've given. But because you're presenting it in this step by step manner, it's hard to flow. I feel like I have to hop around constantly from point to point to point.

My comment about questions. I have absolutely no clue if Sven is supposed to be human, goliath, giant, fey, half giant, half fey... I can't correlate what you're doing with him on a character and mechanical development track. It really appears to me that you're forcing background points to fit this power build character that I obviously have zero idea of what you want it to be. I don't want to think that's what you're attempting to do, and I don't want to call you out on it if that's not what you're attempting to do because that's unfair of me to automatically judge you like that. If you're wanting to attempt something specific with the character, that's fine. But I gotta be able to understand the short term before I can look 10 levels down the road that the party isn't even close to yet. Does any of that make sense for people?

i got you, but the step by step structure you're talking about here is the 10-minute background format. i'm not sure why whoever decided to call it the "10-minute background" but yeah, i was referring to that specific structuring of a background (5 core details, 2 goals, 2 secrets, 3 relationships, 3 secrets/quirks/mannerisms listed out).

Heh, I thought about trying to simplify the character background, but it sounds like we wouldn't be on the same wavelength. It sounds best if I bow out and let someone else take a shot at it.

I wish you the best of luck, and hope everyone has a good time. :)

The ranger rolls 1d20 and adds his ranger level and his Charisma bonus to determine the wild empathy check result. The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly.

    Background:

Nuri was born in the Cinderlands to the Shoanti Sklar-Quah. However, from her earliest moments, it was clear that she was different, from her fiery eyes to her talent for manipulating flames. Her magical talent was recognized by her tribe's thundercaller, and she was raised to become an oracle. Her first revelation came as she stared into the sun, and saw enlightenment and wisdom in its infinite light. Her power was fully realized, able to channel blasts of solar wind and divine power, but it came at the price of her sight, her eyes damaged by the sun she would come to hold so dear. With the coming of her abilities, she decided she was not content to follow in the trackless meandering of her tribe, instead she would follow the sun and stars wherever they would lead her. About a month into her wandering, a brutal storm blew in from the Arcadian ocean and without shelter she likely wouldn’t have survived. She found shelter at Windsong Abbey. While she may have entered to find respite from the storm, she left five days later a devout worshiper of Saranrae. She wandered for a day more, before finding the quiet seaside town of Sandpoint. She then knew where she would settle down until her destiny called to her again. In the five years she has lived in Sandpoint, she has gotten to know Ameiko Kaijutsu quite well, and has refined her magic into a more polished form. She spends her days chatting with Ameiko, praying to Saranrae in whatever patch of sun she can find, or practicing her oracular abilities.

    Personality and Appearance:

Nuri is a kind and generous person, and always striving to redeem those who do not see the light of goodness. While the sun took her sight, she sees it as a part of the journey to enlightenment that she must walk to gain knowledge and a deeper understanding of the source of her power. She sees Saranrae and the sun as necessary for life, and while its power may be harsh at times, it is ultimately a nurturing force. She feels guilty about leaving her people, and as such takes requests from them incredibly seriously in an effort to apologize from straying from the path they intended for her.

Nuri stands at about five feet and nine inches tall, with red-orange hair and cloudy eyes that burn with inner flame. Her skin is a light bronze color, slightly darker than many of her Shoanti kin, and at times, especially in heated moments, a glowing halo manifests around her head.

Yeah, that doesn't make sense to be called a 10 minute background. Probably deemed that way by the roll vs role arguments and somehow stuck. Whatever lol. And understandable Sven, no hard feelings. I wish you luck in get him into a game! As for everyone else, I may let this run until tomorrow evening when I get home from work, unless there's a mass influx of interest in which case I'll put the deadline for the day after (Thursday evening EST).

Glad I got this character done when I did then! Here's Rowan the Hunter. Intended to be a switch-hitter between a bow and his sword, though does a lot of tracking/hunting. His wolf helps with that part

    Background and Drawback added. :)

For what it's worth, I only started playing on the Paizo boards recently and for my first character the DM asked us to use the 10-minute background format, so that's where it came from. I believe it originated within the roll20.net community.

And if you're curious, the background decisions were made originally for Reign of Winter but adapted recently for RotRL applications, which is why it seems a bit inconsistent. The fey take a more prominent role in that AP and I thought it was an interesting jusxtaposition between torn between multiple worlds. The mechanical decisions were things that seemed interesting from the context of the background. That said, you've encouraged me to rethink the background if I were to apply to a different RotRL game - something more straightforward would probably be better for this AP, so thanks for the advice!

That makes a lot of sense to me now Lite. Seems to me as if the other GM you had has a different style than I have. And while I haven't played Reign, a lot of what I did see makes sense now. As a piece of advice, I would recommend creating new characters rather than trying to change older characters originally meant for a particular campaign. You're still more than welcome to create a character if you'd like!

So a few more notes from what I've seen. Thank you Ispen for the extra bits, helps me out. Delia still needs a background, you still have time though. Furnok, you would certainly give me use for the pig farmer mini at a table lol. I like the idea of starting from humble beginnings, obviously I would need some questions answered but that's something that can be taken care of later. I like the Nuri concept you bring, though same for you, some questions would have to be answered that can be done later. And finally Rowan looks fairly solid to me. If you wanted to flesh things outs, I certainly wouldn't mind that.

So like I said earlier, I'll close this up tomorrow evening unless there gets more interest, in which I'll extend until the following day. Hopefully that allows everyone to finish up and ideas they want to finish up.

I remember the NPC commoner image of a pig farmer with scythe. Might get a pig animal companion

I was also inspired by the Muramasa video game story where some peasants were being taxed to death and tried getting justice with hoes, bamboo spears and sickles.

Actually I'm Goofygeek, I usually use that instead of 2nd generation cleric since I couldn't change it lol.

And dowsing things out is something I can do, any part in particular you'd like to see more of about Rowen?

i get off work soon and will write up this background.

Alrighty, I am home from work, and at this time, the recruiting is closed. Those characters already submitted are:

    - Rowan Meyer, Human Hunter by TheGoofyGE3K

I will take the evening to go over things one last time, and then I will get with the other half of the group to make sure that they're okay with my picks, and I'll have an answer for you guys by Friday evening!

    background is up now.

Added my drawback ideas, torn between two

And of course I posted that under the other alias lol. Good luck everyone

    Good luck to all!

Okay everyone! I have made my decisions and sent them out in private messages. You guys put up some great looking characters, and I thank you for your interest! If something happens over the next few days in which someone can no long participate, I will send another invite to the next character I would like to have.
