Background:
Delia was born to a pair of Mwangi slaves in Cheliax. She grew up hearing stories of the powerful magics of her ancestors. She never met her father and when her mother died in a failed escape attempt because she couldn't bring herself to kill an "innocent" witness, she swore she would purge herself of such weakness and survive. So Delia grew strong and hardened her heart, and, though it took her decades, she eventually managed to escape Cheliax and found her way to Varisia's Churlwood.
She wandered there for a time, unsure how to relieve the frustrations of her experiences. Occassionally, she would cross paths with an unfortunate goblin who had become separated from its allies. Sometimes she would hide and let the creature pass uneventfully, but sometimes... sometimes she would become acutely aware that she was cowering in fear of a worm. The memories of her powerlessness in Cheliax would overwhelm her and, in anger, she would eviscerate the little beast.
One day, she became aware of a particular bird, a crow, that seemed to be following her. She had first noticed it weeks before, but thought little of it. That day, however, it became obvious that the creature was watching her and waiting for something. She stared at it curiously until she noticed a twig snap and turned toward the sound. No more movement. The forest was eerily quiet. She looked back and the crow was gone. Fear gripped her as she imagined being dragged back to Cheliax... back to chains and impotence. A feral scream escaped her lips as she challenged her invisible stalker to face her. She would not hide. She would die there fighting if she must, but she would not hide and she would not go back. There was no response and Delia fell to her knees as her eyes began to burn.
Fighting back tears and scolding herself for her lack of dignity, she failed to notice the armed figure quickly approaching her. She attempted to scramble away, but simply couldn't muster enough speed. The man was practically on top of her, her fate sealed, but rather than fear or resignation, the only thing Delia felt was defiance. She looked directly back into the eyes of her assailant, her resolve palpable, but neither was the man deterred. He drew his arm back to stab, a greedy look in his eyes, when suddenly he was accosted by a blurry mass of black feathers. The crow scratched and pecked at the bandit's eyes causing him to drop his dagger as he swatted wildly at the bird, giving Delia time to get to her feet. She picked up the dagger and, without hesitation, drove it into the man's heart.
After the battle, the crow landed on the ground and slowly approached Delia. She pointed the knife at the bird and warned it not to come any closer. It stopped and eyed her knowingly. Then it spoke. It explained that it knew who she was and what she sought, and it offered her help. It offered her power...
