Ralleck was born the youngest son to a family of shepherds on a remote farm, located in the hills near Wicken. It was, all in all, an isolated sort of place, home to some long forgotten tribes and faded fey magic. Or at least those were the rumors, for the sheep there always seemed a little wilder, and a little more restless than anywhere else, and the grass grew ever taller and greener. All in all, it was a fairly nice, idyllic sort of place, at least compared to the rest of the world, and while Ralleck's childhood was never the easiest, it was, all in all, a fairly happy one. Yet, he was never quite satisfied. Why live so small, with the city of Castorhage lay just a few days away, perhaps filled with dangers, but also endless opportunity, and surely a better life than cleaning up after sheep? Perhaps it was simply the restlessness of youth, or perhaps he had indeed been touched by the spirits of the ancient fey warriors buried beneath those hills, either way, he grew determined to leave his distant home on the hills. Ultimately though, it would be economic factors that finally pushed Ralleck to go to Castorhage. There was simply more money to be made there, some of which could then be used to keep his family afloat through the harsh winters. It was not as if the family desperately needed the extra hands(and an extra mouth) around, when he already had three older brothers and a sister besides. And so it was, that Ralleck began going to Castorhage. At first it was only during the winters, when there was less food at home, and an extra source of income was desperately needed. He would for the most part work the unpleasant odd jobs he could find, in the shadows of those twisting, sprawling streets, scrounging up whatever coppers he could for when the time came to return home. It was, perhaps, not the most pleasant first look at Castorhage. But, somehow he felt safe, despite the unpleasantness that surrounded him. Indeed, this was when his strange abilities would first begin to quietly manifest themselves. A surprising skill at fighting would see him become a bouncer at a rather disreputable tavern, yet, he was never meant to be just dumb muscle. He began to develop a knack for healing magic as well, though he tried to keep that quiet, so as to not attract the wrong sort of attention. However, it soon became clear to him that his gifts needed to be used, for the good of those less fortunate. By this point, it was clear that Castorhage was not the city of his dreams, but if that was not the case, then surely he could help make it so? And what good was it, to be granted these abilities, if one did not put them to work? Thus, while his days would be spent cracking skulls and removing drunks, at night, he would venture out, to quietly do what good he could. An orphaned child with a broken leg, or a man silently dying in a gutter, it was hardly more than a drop in the ocean of misery, but as far as Ralleck was concerned, it was enough to be worth it. As time went by, however, he began to engage in more dangerous activities, such as the nighttime "cleaning up" of petty criminals. As the years went by, Ralleck began spending more and more time at Castorhage, practically becoming a resident of the city. Eventually, some determination, connections, and a bit of innate martial prowess, he would wind up joining the City Watch. It was there, that he would meet Sergeant Smiles. Smiles was, of course, hardly her real name, but she'd had a truly horrid childhood on the streets of Castorhage, as a nasty scar across her face could attest, and if she'd ever had a real name, she'd either forgotten it or was trying to do so. She was an easygoing and humorous young woman, just as corrupt as any of the other members of the Watch, though not nearly so morally bankrupt. She had, as she put it, joined the Watch so that for once she could be the boot, rather than the one getting stepped on. In other words, she could not be more different than Ralleck, Yet, somehow, the two became close friends over the following years, with Smiles keeping the more duty-bound Ralleck out of trouble. Ralleck would, however soon grow disillusioned with the notoriously corrupt organization, finally seeing the city for what it was, a rotten structure from top to bottom. At first, he would react with ever more determination. But, nothing stuck, nothing mattered, and in the end, that became clear to Ralleck. Sick of the seemingly endless incompetence and lies, and realizing that he could just as easily work on his nightly to-do list of wrongdoers without working for the Watch, Ralleck would resign from the watch, and turn to doing odd jobs, guarding merchants and wares in dangerous parts of the city, and whatnot, though he remained good friends with Smiles. Some time later, Ralleck would decide to head back to Wicken for the summer harvest festival. It would be good, to see his childhood home again, after all, and he had always maintained close ties to the town. By this point, his parents had both passed away. A particularly devastating winter had seen the untimely deaths of his three older brothers who had remained in the family business as well. Life in those hills had always tended to be nasty, brutish, and short, and at least Ralleck had been spared that sort of fate. Thus, at this point, the only close family he had left was his older sister, Candace, who had sold whatever was left and had managed to set up a small tailor shop of her own in town. Of all his siblings, Ralleck had been closest to her, and he intends to stay at her place for a few days, while he sees what opportunities is hometown might have. Overall, Ralleck's view of the world has been considerably tempered over time. He remains something of an optimist, and an idealist, with the hopes of a new Castorhage, one without the crime and corruption of the current one. But, he also acknowledges that such is not likely to be a task for one man, nor is it something that he expects to see come about in his lifetime. Nonetheless, it is a goal he is perfectly happy to strive for, and the idea of gradual change is one he has come to accept. For the most part, his ideas are closest to those of the various Revolutionary factions, who wish to see the current monarchy toppled in favor of a more competent and egalitarian form of government. After leaving the City Watch, he did grow close to one member of the rebels, a young singer and political firebrand by the name of Ygritte Caitiff. Though more inclined towards rapid, violent and radical change than Ralleck, the two got along well, and during this time, Ralleck would often quietly work with various rebel-aligned individuals, even considering officially joining the cause. Overall, Ralleck is generally a pleasant and polite individual, who generally makes many acquaintances, but few close friends. He is, however, fiercely loyal to those friends he does have. He is often willing to do unpleasant and brutal things, and is quite remorseless in pursuit of what he considers to be the greater good, though for the most part he at least tries to avoid resorting to such.
