Dropping a note in all my games, I am back from my week long vacation. Hope everyone who celebrated had a good Thanksgiving. Going to be working on catching up on things but I got sick over the weekend so moving a bit slower than normal. In any case, I will get caught up ASAP.
It looks like the cat took a diagonal 5-foot-step around a corner. Pretty sure that's not allowed.
Will post Shae's actions tomorrow.
Happy Holidays, all!
I'll be around to post most days (excl. Sunday and New Year's Day).
Hope everyone had a good New Year! Just dropping a note that I am back to a regular schedule again so can post more frequently once again. Hope that we can get back to a quick pace again now that the holidays are over so we can get this thing moving! We are so close to finishing book 1!
It's looking like sometime in the not so distant future I'll be taking over and GMing for all of you. I've been around on the forums for all of four months now, but I have a very special passion for this campaign.
That being said, if everyone could give me a description of your characters' personalities and interests that would be very helpful. If you have any questions for me please feel free to ask away! I'll be looking at the way the campaign is currently set up as far as character creation and rules are concerned and may make some slight tweaks depending.
I'll try to get a PM out some time Monday afternoon.
Jess has most of her details in her profile. Nothing crazy just a high energy gnome that likes blowing things up, reading books, researching and experimenting. Specific to the RotRL game she lives with Brodert Quink as an assistant of sorts, but has almost become more like an adopted daughter.
Hi Arrannai! Thanks so much for agreeing to take this on!
Matthias is a nerdy and nervous little ratfolk who was raised as an orphan in a monastery where he helped by working in the library. He loves books and information about magic or even more so history and is endlessly curious. However, he's rather fearful ESPECIALLY of social interaction.
Thanks for the info so far, everyone. Far as I can tell Bereket is also an active player?
As for looking through the original recruitment, here are my notes on the matter.
Level: The original GM stated that they would like to take the campaign to level 20. The AP is only written for content up to level 18. (Un)Luckily(?) for you, I've actually run RotR up to level 20 before so I have all the appropriate monster adjustments already on hand. I prefer to use experience points as a GM, and with RotR using the fast track I think that'll help us pace in some side-content in a meaningful way.
Ability Scores: 25 point buy is a lot, if I'm being totally honest. I like to run 15 for my home games and I'm stuck with 20 for PFS games. With all of your characters having high power relative to the intended difficulty of the AP I will likely upscale important encounters appropriately.
HP: We can definitely stick with average or roll, your choice. More to be said on this in the downtime section below.
Crafting: Given the in-world time this takes, I have never seen it break a game the way the theory-crafting types seem to pretend it does. All crafting is available as written in Paizo material.
Races: In the case someone has to reroll, all Paizo published races are legal for play.
Classes: All Paizo classes are legal for taking levels, retraining, or in the case someone needs to make a new character. Gunslinger and the occult classes are fun and I will fight this point until the day I die. (people are just mean)
Alignment: Preferably non-evil, though I don't take very strict interpretations of alignment. I care more about Hollie following her paladin code than I do the laws of whatever city she's in, for instance.
Skills: Background skills are cool. That's all I feel needs to be said on this point.
Allowed source material: All Paizo. aonprd is all of our friends. If something you are using is sourced from an obscure splatbook (or if you feel like being nice) please just throw a link in your post. :)
Leadership: Leadership is still allowed. The only options for a cohort are NPCs already established in the AP or your backstory. If you can manage a very compelling argument for a new addition that may also work out. If you have a cohort I will be running it in combat and such as if you had an NPC companion. Regular followers will stay behind at settlements unless you're looking to have your leadership score tanked by having them get killed by high-level foes.
Boon and Bane: Interesting rule, though admittedly I will likely forget to use the mechanical aspect of it.
How I GM, Generally
Posting: I do my best to post in all of my games at least once a day. IF you look at my recent history you'll see that has not been the case for the holidays. I will do my best to communicate if I will be gone for any protracted length of time. I generally do not post on weekends.
Experience: I use this as a pacing tool and it will be in my info bar when I come up with a clever alias for this game. Honestly don't worry about this much. If you miss a story reward somewhere I'll likely just make up the difference by adding another small enemy to your next boss encounter.
Downtime: There are times in this campaign where there are ambiguous gaps of time. I will be giving out downtime days at those points in case you want to use the retraining rules or crafting. You can retrain pretty much anything, including spending time and money on gaining additional hit points. We'll discuss it more the first time we get there.
I might've missed something, though at this point I think that's a good start. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
That all sounds fantastic! Thanks!
Background skills are great and should always be used. As a minor note of theorycraft interest to others, I'm working on an equivalent variant rule, background feats, in my spare time. Basically, you get a few extra feats but they can only be spent on stuff that's more flavorful than mechanically useful, especially in terms of combat power. E.g. merciful takedown or skill focus(profession). I'm going to test it in a game or two of mine once I finish the LONG list of acceptable feats, even though it's only like 10% of all feats...
I don't think the Boon and Bane mechanic has ever popped up in the game, so we could probably eliminate that altogether.
Agreed. If I recall, that mechanic was instituted by the original GM who, unfortunately, did not stick around very long.

Alright, I am all caught up. Pretty sure that it would be Fireday, 28 Rova 4707 by my count. I'm gonna catch some sleep and post here in discussion tomorrow. I'm hoping to take over GMing as soon as possible to relieve some pressure from poor Dak.
|GM The Latest Unpleasantness|
I do most of my posting from work so it may cause some light delays every now and again, but if you already have something set up far be it from me to refuse. Should I contact customer support and have them pass this campaign over to me? I can take over the GMing whenever you want to swap over, Dak. Having been the GM and GMPC for a number of F2F games (the pains of having like, two friends) I know it can really dampen the experience.
Also, just as a note, I'm 100% good with dropping the bane and boon thing.
Not so ninja edit: If you all wouldn't mind, I always have my players fill out a survey when I start GMing for them. You don't have to include your name or anything in it, but it's for the most part a list of what topics you're comfortable with in a group setting and to what degree. The link is here. This is optional, of course, but it helps me gauge what kind of tone I should set.
Sure you are welcome to take over when you are ready. If you want to use the map I setup, the link is at the top. Just let me know your username and I will make you a GM. Don't feel pressured though, if you have some other means of handling maps you are more than welcome to switch to that.

That being said, if everyone could give me a description of your characters' personalities and interests that would be very helpful.
Welcome! Very glad to have you!
Bereket is a kindly young man who has spent very much of his life traveling from town to town in a Varisian caravan. He is very interested in the history of his people, as well as spreading good will, healing, redemption, etc. as a Sarenite.
Here's a little description from his introductory post:
Hey Shaedeen! Do you have Discord? The rest of us are all on a chat room there that has proven invaluable in discussion of this (and other games) as well as for keeping in touch and notifying one another of posts.
If you have it (or get it) we can get you the info and get you on there with us!

Congrats, everyone! You've hit level 4. Before we move on I would like everyone to level up and all that. In addition to your class features, you all get an ability boost this level! Because this is the first level up with me as GM, I'll throw some stuff here.

Dang, we have a lot of healing between the potions and Jess's infusions! I should be pretty safe to use my burst of radiance rather than saving it for a CMW.
Burst of radiance! So good! And casting it, 5 ft stepping up, and smacking someone in the face to punish them for being blinded sounds pretty awesome!
Edit: Oh wait. I see the warpriest can only self-buff when casting as a swift action. Ok still a great spell tho.
Just so it doesn't get lost here is the gold from our last chunk of loot that I'm assuming we sold off before heading up to Thistletop. Please add the following values to your character sheet:
Bereket: 1,228.00 GP
Hollie: 1,228.00 GP
Jessalissa: 1,228.00 GP
Matthias: 1,103.00 GP
Shaedeen: 1,228.00 GP
Party: 903.00 GP
Party: 903.00 GP
Woo hoo! That looks like it'll be quite the party!
Remember to buy some lampshades for us to wear on our heads!
Jes's CMW extracts have an expiration date, correct? Shae will give hers to Hollie and Drax if needed.
As some of you might know, I don’t have home internet access, walking instead to my local library to use their free wifi. Currently, I have a wifi hotspot on loan. The loan expires today, and while I don’t have to return it until the start of May, as I understand it the hotspot shuts down automatically when your loan period ends. With the library closed “until further notice”—‘til early April at the very least—I may be unable to post for the foreseeable future. If this happens, please bot my PC or have them step “offstage” temporarily if that’s more convenient.
Hopefully my hotspot keeps working and there won’t be an interruption in my ability to post…but if it doesn’t, my state’s pretty much in lockdown mode for God knows how long and I have no good posting options. I’m looking into assisted/emergency internet access, but the application process takes some time.
I’m hoping I’ll post to games as usual tomorrow, but if I can’t…Stay safe and I’ll get back in touch when I can.
Just wanted to drop a note. I sent our GM a message on Discord to see if they were alright and if they had plans of continuing with the game. Will keep everyone posted. I know there is a lot of craziness right now, but haven't really heard from them for awhile no one way or the other.
In the event I don't hear back of they don't plan on continuing on how do you all want to proceed? Want me to see about finding another GM, maybe take over again in the interim to get us moving again or what is everyone's thoughts?
I'd like to keep going and would be open to any option.
I would certainly prefer not to end the game. I don't mind a wait, though--I know that present circumstances are strange for most, if not everyone.
