Righteous, Redeemed or Ruined - A Wrath of Righteousness PBP

Game Master GM Idyll

1 to 50 of 54 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

The Worldwound tore reality apart at the dawn of the Age of Lost Omens, murdering the nation of Sarkoris and unleashing a ravenous demonic horde upon the world. Only the quick action of several other nations of knights, barbarians, and heroes stemmed the demon army and contained it within lost Sarkoris, and for the next century, crusade after crusade tried to defeat the demons only to fail time and time again. Their greatest success, the line of magical artifacts known as wardstones that stand sentinel along the Worldwound's border, barely manages to contain the demons. So when one of the wardstones is sabotaged, a city falls and the demons within surge out in a massive assault like none before. Even before the Fifth Crusade has begun a city has fallen and some of the crusaders' greatest defenders and heroes are slain. Can anyone rise up against the demon host to prevent the armies of Deskari, the demon lord of the Locust Host, from swallowing the world?

As you've likely gathered, this is a recruitment thread for Paizo's newest AP, The Wrath of the Righteous.

Introduction
Hello, Paizo friends. Idyll here, returning after a nine-month absence from the boards. The life events that took me away from you have subsided and I have the time, energy and capacity to run one PBP game. I love you all dearly, and I've missed you much.

Now, on to what matters.

Applying for the Game
To apply, create a character using the provided criteria and write a short backstory/character profile.

Character Creation Guidelines:

1) 15-Point Buy, 1st Level (I know, a 15-point buy is tough. But I've come to love the challenge it creates.)

2) Core races are preferred, but Featured Races from the Advanced Race Guide will be considered if the back story is interesting and the crunch isn't too overpowered.
3) All Paizo-created classes are allowed. We will be playing with emerging firearms (if there is a gunslinger in the party).

4) Choose two traits. One must be a campaign trait.
Keep in mind that your trait ties into your mythic background.
5) No evil alignments. If you've read the Player's Guide you already know this, but the AP is really designed for good-aligned heroes. Keep that in mind.

6) Max HP at first level

7) Max starting gold for your class

No 3pp material will be allowed. I apologize if that causes any character development issues.

Submit a Background: Why is your character in Kenabres? Are they from there or visiting? What are his/her driving goals? Keep your background tight and focused. You can tell the full story in-game if you're selected.

Miscellaneous Information:

I'm looking for 4 (maybe 5) players. Because of this small number, it's important to have all major roles filled - martial, arcane, divine and skills. If you want a better shot of getting picked, don't apply with a character that already has a lot of applicants in that role.

I'm looking for at least one post per weekday, more if possible. If you can't post, just let us know. During combat, if you go 24 hours without a post, your actions will be botted.

If you lower an ability score to 8, there will be possible mechanical & roleplaying consequences, and it should affect how you play your character. No score may be lower than 8 before racial adjustments.

Recruitment will be open until I feel like I have enough characters/players to choose from - I'm not certain when that will be, so get the apps in sooner, rather than later. I'll try to give everyone 24 hours notice before final submissions are due so folks have time to wrap things up.

I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

Damn it all. Three Wrath of the Righteous recruitments have gone up today, and I've already applied for two. I'd be a fool to submit the same character to a third, wouldn't I? >.>

Well damn. I'll throw my hat in the ring for this one as well. He currently has a 20 point build, but the 15-point build is easy enough (subtract 1 Int and 1 Dex). Maximillian welcomes the mechanical & roleplaying consequences of having Str 8 with gusto.

He currently has a drawback to gain an extra trait, if that's allowable. If not, any issues with the Additional Traits feat?

*sigh* Screw it. I'll apply for this one as well. Three outta three should give me at least some chance of getting to play this, huh? Given my luck, I can't see an conflicts coming up. Worst comes to worst, I'll withdraw an app.

El Ronza's character, human cavalier heading to guardian. Already at the appropriate point buy. Have a backstory in the profile, but I'll sum it up when I get on in the morning, unless you're happy with it as-is.

Dotting with interest.

OK, here goes.

Melchesiech, LG* elf abjurer

Initial Crunch:
S 10 D 12 C 12 I 18 W 10 C 10

Traits: Riftwarden Orphan (slight variant), Classically Trained
Feats: Scribe Scroll (bonus), Cosmopolitan (class skills: Sense Motive, Perception)

Opposed schools: Enchantment, Necromancy

Hawk familiar

Fluff:
Melchesiech (not his birth name) was born in Kyonin in 4561 AR, scion of a family of wizards and scholars, and for a time it seemed that his life’s path was set for him. His intellectual gifts were recognized early on, allowing him to receive training in magic from his childhood and, though studious enough, his louche ways also earned him a favored place among Calistria’s worshippers. He was, in short, a dilettante. The death of Aroden did little to change this; it was something important to humans, of course, but elves could afford to wait a century or two and see what its effects would be.

Then word of the First Mendevian Crusade came to Kyonin, and something in the nascent wizard’s heart began to change. Treerazer's depredations in the south of Kyonin were a known quantity, but this was a new thing. The change was subtle at first...a growing urgency to his studies, but that could easily be attributed to the deaths of his parents, supposedly slain in Tanglebriar. But the years became decades, the news from the Worldwound grew grimmer, and the changes continued…not only internal, but also in appearance; the chameleon nature of elvenkind saw to that. His fine, bishounen features hardened and became angular, hawklike; his long blond hair darkened, and a strange mark appeared on his back, the spiral symbol of the Riftwardens. His nights were troubled by dreams of Kyonin’s fall and the death of all he held dear, and so his days filled with arcane studies to the exclusion of everything else. Finally he was ready, and in recognition of his new dedication he left his old name behind him in Kyonin, taking as his name an ancient Sovyrian word meaning only "Weapon."

What Melchesiech did not know until he came to Kenabres was that he was not the first (or even the second) crusading elf with that name. His parents, whom he thought had died in Tanglebriar, had actually joined the crusaders in Kenabres decades before, both calling themselves Melchesiech. They went missing soon after they arrived, though, lost on a mission into the Worldwound.

His alignment is starred because he has deliberately made his personality a better match for the Inevitables, whom he believes are best capable of aiding in his quest to close the Worldwound. His self-sacrifice, though, is ultimately a Good act. So he generally acts LN, but is at heart LG (for the moment).

In appearance, Melchesiech is a blade-thin elf with sharp, ascetic features that in many ways match his hawk familiar. His movements are precise and well-controlled; though possessed of the usual elven grace, in his case his rigidity of posture and stillness when not actually doing anything combine to give the impression of a well-made clockwork automaton. He has little or no emotional affect, again evincing an atypical level of self-control for an elf. (In his case, it is clearly not boredom; he is engaged with the world, but attempts to show no visible emotion beyond an occasional intense curiosity.)

Incidentally, I messed with the fluff for the Riftwarden Orphan trait a bit because otherwise it wouldn't apply to an elf; it's been less than a century since the Worldwound reopened, and the minimum starting age for an elf wizard is 120 years.

Dotting with interest. Need to check if this guy meets your rules.

Dorotea would like to apply

Dotting for interest, I think I'll try building a different character for this submission, I'm thinking rouge.

Dotting!

I've a sorcerer idea I've been kicking around since reading the Player's Guide. I'll have a submission either this afternoon or evening.

And welcome back, Idyll =)

Welcome back, Idyll! Glad to hear you're doing alright.

Background: Tabitha, (she prefers Tina and is called 'Tiny Tina' because she is short) Has lived in Kenabres her whole life and has worked with her parents in the healer

quarters most of her life. Having a steady diet of stories about warriors heading out on crusades, she decided to sneak aboard a supply wagon but got separated from the others

and was eventually helped by a mysterious woman back to the city. Tina threw herself back into her studies, determined not to allow such a mishap happen again.

I'd like to present Liliana Halse, the winsome aasimar sorcerer with a silver dragon bloodline, for consideration.

Her short backstory/personality blurb is in her profile, but I've copied it below for ease of reference.

I'm on the East Coast and have reliable access to the boards while I'm at the office throughout the week, though I can nearly always post during the evening as well if the work day is slammed for one reason or another. Weekends are less reliable as I tend to travel a bit, but at the very least a Sunday evening update is a near guarantee as far as weekend activity is concerned.

Thanks for your time and consideration and best of luck to all the other applicants! =)

Background/Personality:

Background:
Born to parents she never knew, Liliana was entrusted to the care of the Halse family by an old woman with silver hair much like her own. She grew up the younger adopted sister of Caelda Halse, who in her own right has become a central cog in Kenabres as a renown blacksmith of notable skill. The two girls share something in common in their blood, and while not from the same direct lineage, both girls have each manifested a celestial heritage.

Perhaps that is why Liliana's mysterious caretaker left the infant with the Halse family. Truth be told, twin bloodlines of note have come together within the young orphan's veins. For in addition to tracing some ancestry back to the angels, the silver-haired maiden of 19 years can also name the great silver dragon Terendelev as her great grandmother, though the girl is unaware of this.

Regardless of her heritage, Liliana and Caelda were very different growing up, but inseparably close at the same time. Both their similarities and differences drew them together in ways Liliana's foster parents would be forever grateful for.

Personality/Mannerisms:
Liliana is a soft-spoken, tender-hearted person who is often warm and empathetic, even with strangers. Perhaps because of her fantastical angelic heritage, the silver haired girl has always found it easy to see the world through others' eyes. While this makes her easy to talk to and trust, it also makes her a bit naive and, at times, gullible.

An optimist with burgeoning magical gifts, Liliana finds herself drawn to helping those in need and supporting the Crusader's ever struggling push against the dark forces of the Worldwound in whatever little ways she might.

I will run a straight aasimar cleric like this alias.

Plan is a smug cleric of Arshea with a crusading mentality.

Glad to see some early interest - and thanks for the "welcomes back," friends!

@Maximillian Akorius - I wasn't planning on using the drawbacks system, but I don't know that I have a problem with it. Leave it for now.

The Applicants
Arcane
Maximillian Akorius - Human Diviner
Melchesiech - Elven Abjurer
Nenthil Wardcaller - Aasimar Abjurer
'Tiny' Tina (Tabitha) - Human Alchemist
Liliana Halse - Aasimar Sorceress

Divine
Diurn Selestro - Aasimar Cleric

Martial
Jens Varmodsson - Human Cavalier
Dorotea - Human Fighter (Lore Warden)

Skilled

Let me know if I missed anyone.

Don't know if it's relevant, but Jens has the Honor Guard archetype. Once he goes mythic, he'll be focusing his abilities on drawing enemy aggression, demoralizing, and trying to take as much damage as he can instead of his allies - saving shield, draw fire, empathic healing, etc. Also, is the backstory alright as-is, or shall I condense it? I seem to be prone to rambling.

Seems like Tiny Tina might be angling for more of a Skilled character than an Arcane, especially with that Trickster oriented campaign trait!

I dunno if alchemists can benefit from the 'extra spell slots' that Archmage path can get.

Yeah, might as well jump in on this one, too. I'm starting to see a lot of familiar faces from other recruitments. Everything is up in the alias. He's a bard, but re-flavored a little so that, instead of performing, he gives battlefield orders, kind of like the warlock class from 4e, if anyone knows it.

Gunning for the marshal mythic path, currently on a face/buff/skills/tactics build. Isaac can be pretty utilitarian.

I'm interested in this campaign as well. I'll draw up a character later today, which will probably end up being a cleric of some sort.

Submitting Lisasha, Paladin of Iomedae.

And submitting Aaliyah El-Amin, a Dawnflower Dervish who pretty much breaks every assumption about party roles and how the mythic paths should work, but hey...

GM Idyll wrote:
@Maximillian Akorius - I wasn't planning on using the drawbacks system, but I don't know that I have a problem with it. Leave it for now.

I swapped it out anyway, taking Additional Traits instead. I think the Two-World Magic trait to get Guidance as a cantrip is pretty thematic. Aroden Lives! (Even if it's only in the form of a 0th level cantrip.)

Liberty's Edge

Will you be using the mythic rules?

I would like to submit Kyra Banior. Inquisitor that will use the trickster path.

Humbly submitting Tikhon Zolnerowich, former member of the Molthunian Imperial Army.

He will simply need to have his equipment updated, he is currently running on 150 gp.

@Jens - I'll let you know once I start reviewing the backgrounds. I'm sure it's fine, though.

@Feral - I intend to.

Here's an updated list of applicants. NOTE: I realize that your character may not fit neatly into the boxes I've included here. I'm revising my note in the original post - I'm not as worried about a balanced party as I am an interesting one.

The Applicants
Arcane
Maximillian Akorius - Human Diviner
Melchesiech - Elven Abjurer
Nenthil Wardcaller - Aasimar Abjurer
Liliana Halse - Aasimar Sorceress

Divine
Diurn Selestro - Aasimar Cleric
Kyra Banior - Half-Orc Inquisitor

Martial
Jens Varmodsson - Human Cavalier
Dorotea - Human Fighter (Lore Warden)
Lizasha - Tiefling Paladin
Tikhon - Hobgoblin Cavalier

Skilled
'Tiny' Tina (Tabitha) - Human Alchemist
Isaac of Steyr - Human Bard
Aaliyah - Human Bard (Dawnflower Dervish)

Got me listed twice. Aaliyah should be the dervish.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

I have an idea for a Sarkorian Druid I would like to try. Expect a full bio & stat set later.

I simply upgraded his scale mail to chainmail, and gave his horse studded leather barding rather than leather. Took him down to one silver piece, however.
Ouch.

For ease of reading, I will explain why he is in Kenabres here.

Quite simply, he is joining in at the suggestion of his superiors in the Imperial Army of Molthune.
They want a bit of a name there, and figure sending somebody who is good at their job is the best way to go.

His driving goal is to slay demons and gain renown for himself. A bit of the renown goes to his own country, but mostly he is there to gain it for himself.

Heading into Champion, perhaps dualing into Marshal, if you allow dual-paths.

Wow - I've started going through the applications and there are some strong characters here. As such, I see no need to drag out recruitment longer than necessary.

I will be closing recruitment in 24 hours and will hopefully have the party selected by the end of the day tomorrow. If you've expressed interest, you still have time to get your character submitted, but you'd better hurry!

Now - back to reviewing the submissions...

I just noticed Tikhon had a 12 in Cha.
This has been changed to 13 because he was short one point.

Throwing my hat into this ring, as well. This is the 20-point variant of the character, I can reduce to 15 without too much trouble.

Well besides redoing gear seemed Nenthil was ready to go. Good luck to all with this go around, so many familiar faces. xD

Liberty's Edge

I'll bow out then.

Good luck guys!

Alright, here's my entry to the pool; Suryani Chaitanya, cleric of Sarenrae. She'll take the Hierophant path eventually.

I kept her background short, but she's currently in Kenabres to escort her brother. I'll leave his fate up to the GM, but something dreadful happening to him would surely push Suryani into embracing and exploring her own abilities.

She's also got the scribe scroll feat, not sure if you're okay with item creation feats, but if not, I'll probably switch it out for Combat Casting or Selective Channeling.

Background:
Growing up in Taldor has never been an easy prospect for Suryani. Where her older brother Timeon inherited their father's Taldan looks, Suryani clearly takes more after their mother, with her thick black hair and olive skin.

Suryani's mother, once the daughter of a Kelish horselord, fled her homeland and moved to Taldor soon after falling in love with a Taldan soldier. After getting married, they've led a relatively simple life, with Timeon enrolling in military academy on insistence of his father, whereas Suryani stayed home and took up more mundane pursuits.

Suryani however, has felt an irresistible attraction to the goddess Sarenrae all her life, unlike her mother, who only pays lip-service to the traditional goddess of her people. She's even gone so far as to join an underground cult of Sarenites that goes by the name of the Dawnflower Blossoms, since the worship of Sarenrae is actually outlawed in Taldor. This connection she has to Sarenrae is a bit of a mystery to Suryani, but she draws strength from it during hardship. She is curious to learn more about it however, and especially about the recurring dream she's been having all her life.

So it was that when her brother expressed his intention to travel to the Worldwound to pledge his service to the crusaders stationed there, Suryani found himself accompanying him for the journey. But unlike what Timeon believes—that she's just escorting him there—Suryani was actually tasked by her parents to try and convince him to abandon this latest foolish notion of his. Because while Timeon has always been an adequate warrior, the truth of the matter is that he overestimates his prowess, while Suryani, in turn, has yet to discover the true strength of her faith.

Ok, as I was going through the applications, I realized that we should ideally only have one trait for each player (I know it's not necessary, but with a party this small, there's no need for overlap). As such, I updated the list with everyone's traits. There aren't any real surprises - the traits fall pretty well along expected lines based on class. But since I did the work, I thought I'd go ahead and post the updated list.

Again - the deadline for applications is noon (CST) tomorrow.

The Applicants
Arcane

Maximillian Akorius - Human Diviner - Riftwarden Orphan

Melchesiech - Elven Abjurer - Riftwarden Orphan

Nenthil Wardcaller - Aasimar Abjurer - Riftwarden Orphan

I will take touched by divinity and head to hierophant.

Aw the suspense of a deadline. xP

Hey, folks. Friendly reminder that recruitment wraps up today at noon CST. If youve expressed interest or dotted, get your submission in soon!

OK, I'll give it a shot

Dennis the tainted

Dennis was born to members of the Mendavian Crusade. From an early ages he was drilled on the physical as well as mental skills he would need to oppose incursions from the World Wound. His parents, both Paladins, had the highest expectations of him, raising him in the church of Iomedae and preparing him for a life of sacrifice and virtue.

Then something went horribly wrong. He was kidnapped by demonic cultists who subjected him to vile rituals in an attempt to corrupt him. Eventually his parents and some fellow crusaders tracked down the cultists and put them to the sword. Luckily the rituals did not take and he was not corrupted. He was, however a bit tainted. Once on a path of moral purity, he went astray. As he entered his teen years he took up carousing, wenching, and developed quite a taste for the sauce. His parents tried to put him back on the straight and narrow, but to no avail. Eventually he gave up the church of Iomedae and took up worship of Cayden Callean. This was the final straw for his parent, and he was disowned.

Finding himself on his own, he decided to use his high level of martial training, and level of expertise in otherworldly threats, he joined a mercenary company based in Kenabres, the Rampant Gryphons. The mercenary life fighting demons has suited him well, even if he remains a relative neophyte.

I should be fine. Did I need to change anything, or sum anything up? I also just realized I haven't adjusted for the max starting gold. That will probably just translate to some better barding for Alfsigr.

So, perhaps it's a bit shameless, but I thought you might like to know that, as a player, I can post several times a day most days. I can post from my phone almost any time, so as long as it's just dialogue or simple actions, I can keep going all day. Not that I'm trying to score a spot on the team or anything...just thought you'd like to know. ;)

Just saw this thread, so this character isn't completely ready, but I wanted to toss my hat into the ring before the deadline, I'll make some adjustments (he was made for a Jade Regent Campaign that never took off), but he's mostly ready.

You and me both. Still I felt no need to point that out. For shame dear Isaac for shame. ;P

I would also like to point out that Tikhon has a slight Russian accent.

This is due to me connecting Molthune and Soviet Russia together.
Whether or not the similarity actually exists, it is already that way in my head.

All right, folks. The party has been selected. As usual, there were some incredible submissions, making my decisions harder than they should have been.

The selected party is
Melchesiech
Suryani Chaitanya
Jens Varmodsson
Isaac of Steyr

Those selected can head on over to the Discussion Thread to check in and finalize their characters.

Thanks again to everyone who applied. See you all around the boards!
