thanks for the info on the guards.
Did we locate tracks? could we tell how many bugbears? Could we tell which way they headed?
Elathras Narcinal
[dice=Survival]1d20+10
I'm assuming that Cuthalian rolling for survival is a verification that he is still willing to accompany Elathras tracking the bugbears.
Shouldering the pack he heads back to the edge of the woods where the goblins seemed to exit, looking for tracks, if he finds any he will follow them, moving slow keeping a keen eye out.perception for tracks: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (19) + 15 = 34
survival, follow tracks: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Earlier Elathras rolled these rolls for finding tracks and following them, I assume they still stand? Did we find anything?
Elathras Narcinal
not excessively far, a few hundred yards? Just wanting to make sure they actually leave. Will move very slow, half speed to track, half speed to keep a good eye out. So quarter speed? Using survival for track and perception for ambushes. How many rolls do you want?
also looking for any info the tracks would tell us, like how many goblins and if they stayed together.
brvheart
Just give me a perception check. There are 16 tracks of hobgoblins, over a wide area.
brvheart
You see a group of hobgoblins ahead, roll init. You and Cuthalian.
Elathras Narcinal
I assume as slow as we were going that they have stopped? Or do they seem to still be moving away from the fort?
init: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Seeing the Goblins, Elathras asks Cuthalian, "They didn't go very far, you want to fight them or go warn the others?
Elathras Narcinal
You said yourself, you are 200 yds out.
Ok, but I'm not sure what it is in relationship to. Had they stopped or did they seem to still be moving away and we just caught up to them?

Cuthalian whispers back "I think we should wipe them out before they show up at the castle in the middle of the night."
Cuthalian

Were we spotted?
brvheart
Yes, they were lying in wait. Bugbears are sneaky that way, but you spotted them also.
Elathras Narcinal
"It looks like they may have been waiting for us. Let's move back and see if they follow." Standing up straight, He fires an arrow at the nearest goblin. Then retreats thirty foot.
attack: Bow, moves back 30 ft.
attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26 for damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Cuthalian

Cuthalian follows suit.
Atk: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 191d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Elathras Narcinal
yes, moved back 30 ft. did either arrows strike true?
Turning to face the goblins, Elathras fires another arrow at the same bugbear. Calling to Cuthalian, "Try and stay close, we will withdraw again, then drawing weapons" Dropping his bow, He turns and runs back, moving slightly towards Cuthalian as he runs.
attack: Bow, free action drops bow, moves back 30 ft. drawing reach weapon.
attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20 for damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
brvheart
You both hit, but one cannot just draw an 8' long spear. You going to call one of the guards that is 200 yards away to bring it to you? It is way too long to carry on your back.

Ok, when the time comes, he will draw the longsword. Nothing had been said previously, so I assumed it was ok to have it available to draw when needed.
Shaking his head, "Thanks for trying Thoron, but I still don't feel so good." Looking from Silvash to Cuthalian, "I still don't feel so good. Could someone else take point?" He sheathes his glowing sword and drawing his guisarme follows nearer to Alana.
Scratching his head, Elathras sheathes the magic longsword, pulling out his guisarme he thrusts the tip through the doorway, deep into the mud attempting to see how deep it goes.
so whoever is using the holy longspear will need to carry it? Or can we put it in a handy haversack or bag of holding or the efficiency quiver?
brvheart
Efficient quiver- The third and longest portion of the case contains as many as 6 objects of the same general size and shape as a bow (spears, staffs, or the like). So that does not work. Nor would a handy haversack as it only holds 2 cubic feet. A type 2 bag of holding or larger would. Otherwise you need to carry it.

cool
At first level Elathras' primary weapon had been a reach weapon. When he was injured he left the Guisarme at the fort. In town he replaced it with a Lucerne hammer, which he left on level two when he saved the thief. He then started using other weapons he had found. The last time we went back to the fort he retrieved the Guisarme, but the reach weapon was no longer his primary weapon. I didn't think about how he would carry it, and when I wanted him to use it I had him draw it out, not thinking about it's length. I will need to decide which weapon to carry, and how to use the different weapons in his possession. I was hoping to use this battle to test using the reach weapon with combat reflexes. Seems a moot point now.Cuthalian Elathras will withdraw the next round.
brvheart
What can I say? Where are you going to carry a polearm? That is why most people do not take them as you pretty much are stuck carry them. They are not an effective weapon in dungeons either due to tight spaces.
Cuthalian

"The judgement of Muir be upon you!" Cuthalian yells declaring a judgement (justice +2 to hit) on the bugbears. He then fires off an arrow and hustles back toward the castle with Elathras slinging his bow as he goes.
1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 9 + 2 = 181d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Ok, both of you make 3 dex checks to evade the pursuit.
dex: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
dex: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
dex: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Elathras Narcinal
This is true, but by that logic all two handed weapons should be carried not stored. What can I say? Where are you going to carry a polearm?
Ok, both of you make 3 dex checks to evade the pursuit.
why? they couldn't move more than 60 ft in the last round to stop us.
Or is it a dex check to cover the 540 ft of even ground?Realizing he hadn't brought his Guisamre, Elathras tells Cuthalian, "Lets retreat to the castle and tell them the goblins didn't leave.'
withdraw from combat

Cuthalian follows as Elathras withdraws.
I didn't think we were trying to avoid pursuit, just utilizing space to pick at them until they closed the gap.
Elathras Narcinal
ninja'd by Cuthalian: I don't know Cuthalian, the original plan was to utilize space. Not having the pole arm I decided to withdrawal, so I guess I changed the plan. I'm not sure what the three dex. checks are for.
dex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
dex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
dex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

Cuthalian cannot move faster than the hobgoblins. These are the rules for evasion and pursuit in Pathfinder.
https://aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?Name=Evasion%20and%20Pursuit&Category=Mov ement
When the speeds of the two concerned characters are equal, there’s a simple way to resolve a chase: If one creature is pursuing another, both are moving at the same speed, and the chase continues for at least a few rounds, have them make opposed Dexterity checks to see who is the faster over those rounds. If the creature being chased wins, it escapes. If the pursuer wins, it catches the fleeing creature.

My point was we were not trying to escape. We were purposefully making a single move action with an attack to hit them as they moved until they caught up. Now, once they are upon us and if we decided to run at that point I see the pursuit being required. Which apparently it is now.

sorry Cuthalian, I didn't know.
If the bugbears catch Cuthalian, Elathras will stop and fight them as well.| brvheart |
Well you need to decide as the bugbears are now within 30' of Cuthalian.

Cuthalian is withdrawing with Elathras.

By winning rounds 2 and 3 the two of you will be able to get back to the castle without the bugbears catching up.
brvheart
After the three rounds they will break off pursuit and leave. Encounter is over.
Elathras Narcinal
Sorry about the confusion Cuthalian, I need to figure out what I'm going to do with Elathras, and if and how we can change his style to make him more conducive to protecting the front of the line, instead of rushing off.
Reaching the gates, Elathras, breathing hard, bent over palms resting on his knees he tries to catch his breath. Eventually Gesturing over his shoulder with his thumb, "They were waiting in the woods. We got a couple with our bows, but we retreated back here."
He looks from Cuthalian to Thoron, "Now what?"
Brv, still morning?

"We could wait for the mages to finish sharing spells then go after the bugbears. I want to drop off orders with the town before Alana starts crafting but at the same time, I don't want to leave the castle unprotected with a horde of bugbears waiting outside while we visit the town."
Elathras Narcinal
Nodding, "I saw just over a dozen, I know we hit a couple with arrows, but don't know if we killed them. As for ambushing them, they seemed pretty savvy, I would need to loose the armor if we were going to sneak up on them."
Turning as Cuthalian speaks, "We have the six guards that we hired, do we want to arm them better? Maybe they could use the armor and weapons in our loot?"

Turning as Cuthalian speaks, "We have the six guards that we hired, do we want to arm them better? Maybe they could use the armor and weapons in our loot?"
I think this is a good idea. Should have the side effect of instilling a little loyalty in the hirelings for the better equipment. Besides, it should also be cheaper than buying them new stuff...
When the ambushers come to inform the mages of the marauding bugbears, they relay that they can easily take a break from the learning time to defend the keep. "Perhaps we can spend a little time this evening and plan our next move against them?"
Also, I am monitoring the posts daily, but since my PC was not in the action I chose to keep quiet until the action was settled.
brvheart
You spent the better part of the morning dealing with the Bugbears and finding out they are now gone. It is now around noon.
Elathras Narcinal
Nodding, Elathras removes his pack, taking out the bag of holding. Pulling out the masterwork armors and weapons, "These are quality arms, they can split up." He turns to Marthek, asking, "Hey Marthek, since Cuthalian gave you the magic armor do you want to give the breastplate to one of the guards?" He then draws out his Masterwork Silver Greatsword, laying it on the pile as well.
Scratching his head, he Asks Thoron, "Are the four of us still going to town? Or are Silvash and Alana going too?"
The list of MW items: MW Silver Greatsword, a masterwork heavy steel shield. a masterwork heavy mace, 3 masterwork scale mail, 3 masterwork heavy wooden shield, 3 masterwork light mace, a masterwork dwarven breastplate, a masterwork dagger
I would recomend still selling the magical items, it is the largest share of the wealth
