[PFS - PbP Game Day 3] 5–11: Library of the Lion (tier 1-2) (Inactive)

Game Master StephNyan

Each researching character can attempt a Linguistics, Knowledge (history), or text-based Craft or Profession check (such as Profession [librarian] or Craft [bookbinding]) to find texts. You might use a different skill or ability, albeit with a penalty ranging from –2 to –5 at my discretion. Those who use magic or class abilities in a particularly creative or relevant way might receive up to a +5 bonus on a check, also at my discretion.

Fargrim looks around.

"I thought we had searched all the rooms?"

Then she remembers the first hall.

"There are two rooms near the entrance are there not?"

She heads towards them.

"Good thing they're by the entrance." Negi said quietly as he followed behind. "Let's be quick but discreet."

Of the two pair of doors that you skipped, Fargrim decides to first inspect what's behind the southernmost pair of doors. (Going by where she positioned herself.)

You open the doors, and a classroom is revealed. This well-lit room holds many chairs aligned towards two giant chalkboards that hang on the north wall. Along the opposite wall, several shelves hold books on sundry topics. Simple but colorful tapestries hang along the north wall, giving the room a bright appearance despite the lack of sunlight and the dour portrait of Grand Prince Stavian III affixed to the south wall.

A 15-minute hourglass sits atop the desk. A brass plaque on the frame of the portrait reads, “To serve Taldor, I must first learn the history of Taldor.”

With a quick glance, you determine the shelved books cover a wide range of topics. You may be able to find some more interesting information here.

Rolan glances about the room, picking up the oldest-looking book on history or philosophy, scanning it briefly. What say you? Should we move on, or stay here and read?

This may be useful, but it will take some time to find out. Checking the other room will only take a moment.

Fargrim nods and quickly heads to the next room.

"We lose no time, as this is on our way out."

The other room turns out to be a recital hall. This room’s well-worn wooden floor sets it apart from the others. The west wall is lined with shelves that support books, a variety of instruments, and dozens of rectangular baskets that contain loose sheaves of paper. Several chairs are pushed against the wall, and a portrait of the Grand Prince hangs to east, surveying everything in the room with magisterial authority.

The brass plaque on the frame of the portrait reads, “Persevere, persevere, persevere!”

Most of the texts in this room seem to relate music, yet there may still be some noteworthy clues that you can find in this room.

The time required to search a room is divided between each actively researching player. You still have somewhere in between 30 and 45 minutes left, and haven't used the clues your found earlier.

Fargrim uses the card catalogue to determine how many clues are left in these two rooms.

I've not been keeping track, but do we think we have found enough real texts yet to meet the VCs requirements?

She will then (assuming there are texts in this room) start to search, with the aid of biblographical references.

profession: 1d20 + 5 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 5 + 8 = 32

With the card catalogue, Fargrim's able to determine each of the two rooms contains two more texts.

Considering she's currently in the recital hall, that's where she starts searching.

You did find all that was required for both the primary and secondary success conditions. What you're doing now is basically extra.

Bibliographic References: Several relevant books have extensive indices and bibliographies that might point to even greater discoveries.

Clue: You may use this clue to gain a +5 bonus on a single skill check made to find texts.

Hidden Gem: Right next to one great discovery, you make another incredible find!

Clue: Use this clue when you or another player discovers a clue or text to find one additional clue or text, if any remain in the room. (If attempting ot use this in a room that doesn’t have any more clues, it doesn’t count; this clue can be used again.)

Are these useable by every PC, or must we choose?

Take the gem, too, as you are our best researcher. I will see what I can find in the other room.

Knowledge, History: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Not much, and the references wouldn't have helped.

Once she finishes searching the room Fargrim realises the team has what they need.

"We have what we need for both the VC and our sponsor. Let us get back to the main library, hide the cards and be hard at work when the librarian returns."

@Ezekias: The clues could be used by everyone, but once used they couldn't be used again. (Unless a clue specifically mentioned it could be used multiple times.)

With only Fargrim and Ezekias actively searching this room (there's no skill check from Rallas), it takes them about half an hour to find the following two texts:

Esoteric Alphabetization:
This library uses a strange system for organizing its texts: it alphabetizes its texts based on the progression of major musical scales instead of using the Taldan alphabet.

Clue: You may use this clue to grant a +2 bonus on all checks made to find texts in a single room for the rest of the scenario.

Prolific Author:
It appears that a long-dead historian wrote more than a dozen books on the topics you’re researching. Perhaps you can find other insightful books by this author.

Clue: You may use this clue to gain a +3 bonus on a single skill check made to find texts.

I forgot to post this one when you were in the room where you defeated the lions:

Enemy Analysis:
This tattered, leather-bound book describes the tactical considerations that the generals of the Shining Crusade had to consider when fighting supernatural foes. It includes many ways for the rank-and-file soldiers to mitigate the damage dealt by powerful spellcasters.

Fargrim realizes there isn't much time left, possibly just a few minutes, to return to the main library. You all return to the main library, where you find your illusions 'reading' books. After removing the cards you take place on the chairs, and Tobias returns to pick you up several minutes later. "Hello again, I'm here to escort you out of the library. I hope you were able to learn something interesting. You sure seemed occupied when I peeked inside earlier."

Tobias escorts you out of the library. After Negi's reunited with his companion, you safely reunite with Venture-Captain Muesello.

Conclusion

Venture-Captain Muesello excitedly welcomes you back and inquires what you were able to learn. Any hitherto unknown facts about the Shining Crusade excite him to no end, and he heartily congratulates you on a job well done.

Muesello sends your discoveries about the Shining Crusade to the Grand Lodge, which studies them in detail, writes up a report, and sends it to Mendev in the hope of providing the Mendevian Crusade an extra edge against the invasion that threatens all of Golarion.

Grand Lodge Faction:
You found the correct cipher to translate the encoded message that Venture-Captain Muesello gave you. You also translated the message, earning the Codebreaker boon on your Chronicle sheet.

Thanks for joining this scenario! I hope you enjoyed it! :)

Feel free to roleplay some more. Chronicle sheets will follow soon. I need some more info from Negi before I can report this game. (See discussion thread.)

There's a lot of competition for "Sucked Most In Combat", and I've got a pretty good claim to it. :-)

I probably don't have much of a claim, not because my stats are any good, but because apparently the dice roller really likes me. So as someone who isn't voting for themselves, I vote for Ezekias because not only did he hilariously fail in combat, he did so across multiple characters(sorry Ezekias).

After cleaning up as much as you can, you go back to the Guardian and present the lion shield to him.

"That's quite a resourcefulness, I must admit," the animate statue praises. "Hmm... This shield seems to have once held an enchantment similar to my own. If you're willing to smuggle this shield out, I'll be able to see the outside world!"

The Guardian gingerly grasps the shield in its mouth and concentrates for a minute. As it does so, the shield's patina recedes leaving a bright and burnished surface. The inside of the shield also bears the inscription "Glorymane," and the Guardian jovially informs you "That's my real name—one that I share only with true friends."

"The shield now contains a spark of my awareness, while my main body will stay here. I will happily assist one of you so long as the cause is just, or the potential glory great."

The shield is an intelligent lion's shield, and these details will also appear on the Chronicle sheet:

** spoiler omitted **

You estimate you have somewhere in between 30 and 45 minutes left to search the rooms you haven't yet.

"Thank you, great and noble guardian." Eleanor bows her head to show respect to the creature and turns to the group "Who wants to wield the shield?"
