Ezekias Silverthane |
We know little of the worldwound as yet, mighty Guardian. That is in fact why we are here. If you can help us find the resources we need, we will be glad to tell you of our findings.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Then again, some of us who can't roll dice for crap may not want to speak for a while.
Fargrim Arikfind |
Remember you can aid-another and the DC there is only ten and no consequences of failure.
Fargrim smiles at the lion. "The world wound lies in the far north of the world. Through it hordes of demons threaten the world, and Taldor too. "
She looks sad. "Why would the lion blades not be allowed to talk with you? Would you be able to help us in our search?"
StephNyan |
"The caretaker described me as a 'cocky' know-it-all! Can you believe it?" the Guardian replies with wonder in his voice. "I think he's sorely mistaken!"
The Guardian doesn't seem to be in the mood to help you. "Hmm... not sure. Perhaps if you can tell me some more about recent events in the world, I can return the info."
This is basically how this part works: you need to beat a certain DC to improve the Guardian's attitude, and telling him about the outside world lowers the DC. (A personal development is insufficient, but tales of your adventures or regional politics are very appealing.)
Negi Othollo |
"Well, there was a recent thing in Absolom about Gnoll slavers kidnapping the wife of the Osirian ambassador." Negi supplies helpfully. "That was a huge mess, with Gnoll guts everywhere. Thankfully, none of mine" he added with a smile.
Fargrim Arikfind |
"And politics in Cheliax is as complicated as ever. They recently 'disappeared' their own ambassador to Absalom. Can you believe it? A team of folk snuck into the embassy to find out what had happened to her. It was quite a mission let me tell you..."
And to avoid spoilers for those who have not done The Disappeared I'll leave it at that.
Rallas Linnderil |
Is there something specific you would like to know about? And that is not very polite to not keep you abreast of any news...not polite at all....
Ezekias Silverthane |
Mighty guardian, I can tell you tales that would curl your toes (if you had them) of
the Fallen Fortress, where I personally slayed several, falling to an almost certain death just as I made the killing blow to their leader, only to be saved by my friend Samuel at the last possible moment. There were crocodile-servants, swarms of spiders, and a deadly room of ravenous bats. It was glorious, my friend, simply glorious!
Diplomacy, Aid Another: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Not a very good story, after all, I guess.
Fargrim Arikfind |
diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
"And then of course there was a trip I took under the Kotus mountains. Undead Gillmen, raging minotaurs, crafty kobolds and rabid dogs. My goodness, the lands further from Taldor are hardly a safe place to travel."
Rallas Linnderil |
Of course....I was sent out to investigate some subjects for my superiors. Nothing overly interesting, but my connections and knowledge of the area were what was needed for the situation.
Ezekias Silverthane |
Nice roll. And that, folks, is how it's done.
StephNyan |
Bingo!
The Guardian smiles wildly, baring its sharp fangs. "I must say, you strike me as very decent people. I'll share some information with you."
"In the rooms beyond, to the east, lives the caretaker. She's blind, which is obviously an advantage to you, but be careful when dealing with her. It happens to be that the most valuable books are kept in some of the rooms beyond. Those rooms are locked, and the caretaker has the key. However, I also happen to have a key. You may borrow it, but do return it to me."
"If you're going to look for information in this room, there are some shelves that may be of more interest to you." The Guardian shares which shelves of this room you should probably check out.
The mechanic for searching works as follows:
Multiple characters can search an area simultaneously. Each researching character can attempt a Linguistics, Knowledge (history), or text-based Craft or Profession check (such as Profession [librarian] or Craft
[bookbinding]) to find texts. You might use a different skill or ability, albeit with a penalty ranging from –2 to –5 at my discretion. Those who use magic or class abilities in a particularly creative or relevant way might receive up to a +5 bonus on a check, also at my discretion.
"There's one more thing," the Guardian says. "I long for the day that I might travel beyond the library... If you're able to find a worthy receptacle to house my magical essence, I'll be able to travel with you."
Fargrim Arikfind |
"That you are chained here is a crime I would see expunged. Be assured that if we find a worthy receptacle, I will do what I can to free you." says Fargrim.
To the others she says "I have some experience in looking for facts..."
profession(researcher): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Ezekias Silverthane |
To free you from these confines would be a great accomplishment. We will do everything we can toward that.
Ezekias searches the specified shelves.
Knowledge, History: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
So the dice are telling me I'm better at reading quietly than I am at talking. Nice try, dice, you're not shutting me up that easy!
Rolan Sunsearcher |
Rolan follows the others, hoping to find the books they're looking for. Suddenly, he has an idea and moves down the aisle, seeming to know exactly where he's going.
He uses a use of Inspiration to provide himself with a +5 bonus. I'll try to use his Knowledge(Local) to know where the books would be. If this isn't an okay alternative to the skills you listed above, please feel free to disregard my roll.
Knowledge(Local): 1d20 + 8 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 8 + 5 = 31
Ezekias, I know your pain. I did pretty much the same thing, tanking a diplomacy check and now I roll well, go figure.
Rallas Linnderil |
Rallas addresses the guardian.
If I come across something worthy enough for your presence, I will bring it back immediately.
Rallas then takes his leave from the guardian and proceeds to the indicated shelves, where he looks for any books pertaining to the worldwound or military/political history.
know local: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Negi Othollo |
Negi continues keeping watch over the others' efforts.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Occasionally, he helps the others in finding certain books.
Perception(assisting): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Fargrim Arikfind |
People can use craft untrained, so an int check gives you a basic thing to try if you don't have any appropriate skills.
StephNyan |
"How kind!" the Guardian says to you. "I look forward to leaving this place."
"Now, don't waste time. Check out the shelves I referred to earlier. There may be something of interest to you on those shelves."
You find the following:
Clue: After you roll skill checks to find documents, any of you may reroll the check before learning the result. (This can be done just once while searching for clues.)
You conclude there's nothing more to be found in the main library chamber. While you were almost done searching, you noticed the volume of the music upstairs went up. After nearly half a minute the volume dropped back to what it previously was.
Ezekias Silverthane |
Ezekias speaks quietly to Rallas.
Ezekias takes quick notes of the ciphers learned and the failed prophecies, as well as the helpful bookshelves.
Noticing the volume change, he says to all,
Was that the crescendo? Are we out of time? I think we have achieved our primary goal, but I would hate to miss out on a chance to research the tomes in the rooms to the east.
If we hurry, I think we still have time.
Rallas Linnderil |
Rallas nods to Ezekias.
Aye, will do. Good work.
Rallas turns to the rest of the group.
Any success? We might not want to dally around.
While looking for information, Rallas looks for a receptacle for the guardian, in kerping his word.
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Fargrim Arikfind |
We can't have been in here that long!
"Great Guardian, do you know how long the music is due to last, and how long we have been in here? We are only permitted two hours and wouldn't wish to outstay our welcome."
Fargrim Arikfind |
Fargrim shrugs and takes the offered key, applying it quietly to the southern door.
"Our thanks, guardian."
StephNyan |
Don't worry about time yet! The music's volume just goes up every now and then, haha!
"No problem," the Guardian replies to Fargrim. "We're bot helping each other, aren't we?"
Fargrim opens one of the doors to the south.
The Second Stone Hallway
This long stone hallway terminates in an ascending spiral staircase to the north. Doors line the hall on the east and west (where you came from).
Rallas Linnderil |
Rallas writes down the information he and Ezekias found quickly. He then proceed down the hall to the left, his eyes keenly scanning for anything out of the ordinary.
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Fargrim Arikfind |
With a nod of thanks to the lion, Fargrim quietly heads into the corridor. "Perhaps away from those stairs.."
Turning right she approaches the first door and listens at it.
Takes ten for perception of 18
Fargrim Arikfind |
"nope" whispers Fargrim. "Where are the others? We are scattered to the four winds at the moment."
Fargrim Arikfind |
Fargrim cautiously opens the door and looks in.
Rallas Linnderil |
Rallas moves to open the door at the far left of the hallway. After opening it, he proceeds inward. assuming there is nothing inhibiting his moving in. I am on my tablet, cant move token. If I get to my computer, I will move it asap.
Fargrim Arikfind |
"This place looks as good as any other." says Fargrim.
Carefully she enters the room, noting the books that are out and before looking through each, notes the page number they are on, so they can be returned to the same page.
"Come on in and help"
I assume our absent players character will join in, up to the others to post.
She starts to search.
profession(researcher): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Rallas Linnderil |
Rallas goes to give Fargrim a hand in searching.
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Rallas doesnt have any other relevant skills for searching other than perception. If that doesnt apply, he will use aid another
StephNyan |
Rallas enters the room on the far left of the hallway.
The Caretaker’s Quarters
These small and simple quarters are sparsely decorated with only simple furniture and a stoic portrait of Grand Prince Stavian III. The room’s kept tidy, but there are still a few signs of daily wear and use such as a small tray bearing the remains of a meal on the desk. The few possessions here are of little value.
A brass plaque on the frame of the portrait reads, “In the end, loyalty is its own reward.”
"Hello, who are you?" an old, blindfolded, woman asks Rallas as she stands up from the desk's seat. Rallas notices several keys hanging from a key chain, which is attached to the woman's belt.
------
With Rallas temporarily occupied, searching the study chamber is up to Fargrim and Eleanor. They find a couple of interesting maps, but have a feeling there's more to discover in this room.
@Fargrim and Eleanor: You may continue searching, but when done with this room you must attempt either a DC 13 Intelligence check or a DC 18 Perception check to place everything back just as you found it.
------
Negi joins Rolan, and attempts to open anotehr door. The door turns out to be locked. Negi quickly goes over to Fargrim, who took the Guardian's key, and returns to the door. By using the key, the door unlocks.
Ancient Books Room
Bookcases cover nearly every inch of the walls in this room, which is only faintly illuminated by small lights set into the ceiling. A glass-paned door seals each panel of shelves, keeping the ancient tomes stored within free of dust. Each cabinet has a simple lock, but the glass-paned doors look like they can easily be broken.
------
While you're all busy you hear the volume of the music upstairs increase again.
Fargrim Arikfind |
"This looks like one of the books we are after."
Fargrim starts to put the room back together, guiding Eleanor in where books need to go.
Fargrim will taken ten on the perception for 18 on putting the room back together. Does Eleanor need to also roll?
