"Thankyou for your help Iliyana, we'll try to be more careful."
Fargrim looks at the desk, and avoids the lever.
"Anyone here good at disabling traps?" she asks.
She also starts to search the room for books.
profession-researcher: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

Ezekias gently prods a book with the tip of his rapier before losing himself in research once again.
Knowledge, History: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

StephNyan |

Does anyone take the potions?
There's nothing to indicate the lever will truly open the secret door, but the party finds nothing else that could give access to whatever's hidden behind the door.
Meanwhile, Iliyana aids Fargrim and Ezekias to find things of interest.
Clue: You may use this clue to gain a +5 bonus on a single skill check made to find texts.
Clue: Use this clue when you or another player discovers a clue or text to find one additional clue or text, if any remain in the room. (If attempting ot use this in a room that doesn’t have any more clues, it doesn’t count; this clue can be used again.)
Don't forget the clues some of these finds give you. You can use them to aid whenever your search a room for new info.

Fargrim looks at Rolan.
"We are here for knowledge, not booty. I know we made a mess in the other room, but you should put the bottles back."
Fargrim will use the Hidden Gem, no time like the present

![]() |

"And if we don't need them to find the writing, we put them back." says Fargrim firmly.
"Can you tell where the darts come out of? Maybe we could put a shield or something similar in front of it?" asks the inquisitor hopefully.

![]() |

"I'm with Falgrim here." Negi adds, "Lootning ancient fortresses and the property of your enemies is one thing, but we have no quarrel with the Lion Blades. Furthermore, if we take the potions, someone will probably notice they're gone. Our purpose is to leave as few traces or evidence as possible, and frankly, we've done enough damage as it is."

![]() |

"Put them back, if we need them we can always come back for them."
She looks around.
"So, nobody is able to try and disarm the trap?" she asks again.
Fargrim has a dex of 8. Given finding the trap was a DC20, I suspect even taking 20 on the disarm, she would be unable to do it. Anyone else want to try? I know we are time limited, but this may be worth spending the time on taking 20 on.

![]() |

The only way to get better is take 20 and someone aid on the roll.
I am unsure about the device to open the door. However, someone could use the potion and go through the door, look around and come back after looking.

![]() |

Rallas is a rogue, right? Any particular reason you don't want to just disable the trap? Fargrim is happy to try an aid-another if the GM will allow it

![]() |

I'll give it a try, it's just that the GM's description led me to surmise that there is no way in...at least so far as we have discovered.

"Well said, I do not wish to start a fight with the Lion blades, nor steal their possessions. she states with a smile towards Negi. "I agree that there is no problem with liberating items from the fortress of the forces of evil, but I do have a issue with this."

![]() |

"Even if it doesn't open the secret door,it may open something else, such as a compartment with the really rare books in it. Please try to disable the trap Rallas." asks Fargrim.

StephNyan |

Well, Rallas can't see through the stones and see all the 'wiring'. There's only so much you can learn from looking at a lever. Best thing is to just try it :)
Keep in mind that taking 20 just means you'll try until it works. When disabling a trap, that means you can still fail several times before you succeed. (And taking 10 is basically taking a single careful attempt.)
Fargrim, disable device can only be used trained :(

![]() |

So to aid=another we need to be trained in disable device? Rats

![]() |

Looks like I have to give this a try. Stand back.
Just a thought. What if someone shoves a shield against the opening where the dart comes out? would that kind of screw it up? And I will take 20 on the roll too. Better safe than sorry.

![]() |

Negi, could you jam your shield against that hole there please? and stay to the one side....don't want to wind up with a dart in the side of the head, do we?

![]() |

I don't think you can take twenty on something that has a negative implication if you fail. So you can on picking a lock, but not on trying to activate a magic scroll. I guess it depends on whether failing to disarm the trap will set it off.

![]() |

Here, I can hold the other side.
Ezekias, feeling left out, moves to help Negi hold the shield securely in place.
Shield are usually concave, right? If we're holding this one with the convex part toward the hole, Ezekias will throw his bundled cloak over the top to damp any residual energy from a bounced dart. If the concave part is toward the wall, Ezekias will simply help Negi hold it there as best he can.

StephNyan |

Rallas, what Fargrim wrote is what I tried to explain. Taking 20 means nothing more than trying somthing until it works. With a door lock that's fine. With a trap, you'll just have to roll.
Negi and Ezekias place the shield over the hole where the dart's supposed to come from. Meanwhile, Rallas starts working on the trap itself.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Rallas has a feeling he's manages to disable the trap. He double checks it, then pulls the lever. The secret door opens, and no dart is shot from the hole that's covered by the shield.
A small corridor is revealed. At the end of the corridor is a door.

![]() |

"Well done Rallas. I knew you could do it!" says the enthusiastic Fargrim.
Carefully she advances towards the corridor.
"Do you want to go first, and look for extra traps?"

![]() |

Nice work, Rallas. On we go!
Ezekias moves to enter the corridor.

![]() |

ok, thought Fargrim was right, just waited for clarification from you, since my books are awol tight now.
Right, now let's set about our goal.
Rallas proceeds to the door, then checks for any alarm or trap.
They might have multiple layers of defence ere. Be wary.
perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17

![]() |

Fargrim joins the procession, keeping her eyes open.
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

StephNyan |

Everything appears to be safe, and you open the door at the end of the corridor. Cabinets with two tall drawers each line the east and west walls of the new room. A relief carving of a lion’s head dominates the south wall, hanging imperiously over a low stone step. Six freestanding statuettes of lions in various poses stand atop the furniture. One crouches as if preparing to ambush its prey. The second is roaring as it leaps at prey. The third wears a yoke that is chained to a large block that the lion strains to pull. The fourth wears a tiny pair of spectacles and reads from an ornate scroll. The fifth is draped in the flag of Taldor. The sixth sits erect and wears a crown.
Iliyana seems to have gotten a bit nervous. "I'm really not supposed to be here..."

![]() |

Perception: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 10
Ezekias, seeing nothing out of the ordinary, moves to the relief carving on the south wall, wondering if it's related to the talking lion head in the main library.

![]() |

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Rolan reaches out and grabs Ezekias' shoulder before he can move further towards the carving. Don't! That could be a trap; I can see a secret door connected to a trap. If you touch the carving, you may set it off. Could someone try to disable the trap?

![]() |

Ah, thank you my friend. I seem to have a knack to finding the most interesting parts of these rooms.
Ezekias grins slyly at Fargrim. This one seems like the type to be attracted to self-effacing humor.
Mostly by stumbling into them and almost getting killed.

![]() |

Bahh my post got eaten by the power outage
Turning to Ilyse she says "Thank you so much for your help, and if you do get into town, try to find me and I will see what I can do to help your eyes some more. Should I hear word of your family I will also try to make contact. Do you need help getting back to your room?"
If she does, Fargrim will take her and then return
Fargrim looks around the room
Takes ten for 18.
"I see what you mean about the lion. Do those statues sit in the depressions?"
She checks out the room for magic
casts detect magic as she starts to carefully look for books.
Will take ten on profession(researcher) for 18 when looking for the books we need
"Six statues but only four holes..."
She casts her mind back to the wisdom back in the old books section of the library where they started...
"Innovation, respect, knowledge, courage, integrity, honor, excellence, glory" she says finally.
"We have already used honour, courage and glory. So Innovation, Respect, Knowledge, integrity and excellence. There are five.."
She looks at the statues, trying to work out what virtues they may possess.
The sixth sits erect and wears a crown
"The first is stealthy - hardly a traditional virtue; the second is courage obviously; the third would be hard work; the fourth is maybe knowledge; the fifth - pride? nationalism?; and the last nobility."
She looks at the statues again to see if there are any additional clues on them.
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
"Maybe that first is innovation, the second courage, which we have already used; the third hmm, the fourth knowledge for sure, the fifth honour- which we have already used and the last maybe integrity? It doesn't quite fit."

StephNyan |

Negi escorts Iliyana back to the corridor, but the old woman stops in front of the door when Fargrim addresses her. "Thank you, child. And I'll be fine, I can find the way back on my own."
With Iliyana gone, Fargrim focuses on the task at hand. She's able to figure out there's some kind of puzzle and senses magic from the trap. Meanwhile, Rallas tries to disable to trap.
Rallas is unable to disable the trap, and instead triggers it: two small ghostly lions emerge from two of the small statues, solidify into statuesque beasts, and attack.

Bite, vs. Prone: 1d20 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 2 + 4 = 20 Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 Ouch... :S
The red lion is very fast, and bites the prone Rallas again. Rallas is heavily wounded by the attack, and is now disabled.
Turn progression - round 1:
Red
Negi
Eleanor
Fargrim 4/9HP & Prone
Rallas 0/9HP (Disabled) & Prone
Blue
Rolan
Ezekias
Those in bold are up.
The results of Fargrim's search action are postponed.

![]() |

Eleanor, I think "working on the mechanism" is on hold while we're being attacked by lions.

![]() |

"Oh Hells!" Negi curses as he runs to the fallen Rallas. Drawing his sword and shield, he Challenges the nearest beast.
"Why don't you pick on someone more your speed, Pussycat?"
Fighting defensively this round

![]() |

Must've been ninja'd as the last post I saw was Rallas trying to disable the trap.
Eleanor draws out her longsword and the uses Detect Evil on the creatures to sense the presence of evil.
Detect Evil is a At Will ability, so not sure if I have anymore actions after.

![]() |

Seeing little room to manoeuvre, Fargrim kicks out at the blue lion.
attack: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 2 - 4 = 13
damage: 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
"Not again.." she murmurs as the wounds begin to take their toll on her.

![]() |

Seeing the situation looks somewhat dire, Fargrim also pronounces a Judgement of Healing.
"I shall _not_ fall this day, and leave the world to be overrun by demons."
Swift action, should have included above, the disadvantage of posting from work. Fargrim gains fast healing 1 until the end of the combat.

StephNyan |

@Negi: No movement on the map will be treated as no movement in-game. Let me know if you're unable to use the map.
Not that it matters much this time, because drawing 2 weapons means you've already spent 2 move actions. (You can't draw your weapons in 1 move action, unless you have two-weapon fighting.)
@Eleanor: Spell-like abilities usually take a standard action. At will just means you can use it an unlimited amount of times, as opposed to abilities that can only be used X times a day.
Negi draws his sword and shield. He then challenges the red lion.
Eleanor draws her sword, and tries to detect if the lions are evil. She comes to the conclusion they're not.
From her position on the floor, Fargrim kicks at the blue lion. The kick misses. Fargrim then activates her fast healing ability, and heals up a little bit.
Turn progression - round 1:
Red
Negi
Eleanor
Fargrim 5/9HP & Prone
Rallas 0/9HP (Disabled) & Prone
Blue
Rolan
Ezekias
Rallas is up.

![]() |

Rolan draws his sword, stepping up beside Fargrim and striking out at the blue lion while muttering, "Go back to your statues and leave us alone! And why are you blue?"
Five foot step towards the lion, use his move action to draw the wakizashi and then attack.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

I think Blue has a turn before me, yes?
