Rand, to speed things up, if your initiative roll is over 15, go ahead and take your first round of combat as well. He will not be flat-footed since you are both well aware of each other.
Should your AC be 1 lower without the luck bonus from the Jingasa, and are you drinking the potions of haste and blur from Rhon?

Both warriors size each other up across the courtyard, waiting for the signal to begin. Sennaka sneers as he sees Rand's waver form, and beckons to one of his tengu guards. As the guard touches him, his form also begins to waver and blur.

Tien:
"First you, then your pathetic friends, then my foolish little brother."

"Hajime!" the man identified earlier as Kazuo suddenly bellows.

Though both warriors were waiting for the call, it is Sennaka who is quicker, charging forwards towards Rand to deliver the first strike before Rand can even touch the cork of the second vial that Rhon had given to him.

Yeouch!

His strike cuts deep into Rand, leaving a deep wound! Sennaka beckons to Rand with his blade as he holds his stance.

Tien:
"What's the matter? Afraid? Come at me!"

Meanwhile, in the background, you see Kazuo's form begin to shift into that of a large blue-skinned humanoid. He does not move to attack, but when Sennaka strikes his blow, the yojimbo leads his forces in a loud cheer for their lord. No mechanical effect, no foul play here, just background scenery.

Perception DC 40 or Sense motive DC30:
Or rather, most of their forces are cheering, but whilst the tengu cheer with savage glee, the human samurai bear sullen expressions and their cheers are devoid of enthusiasm.

Sennaka's final strike appears to be guided, if not by the gods, then at least by his supreme confidence in himself, and cuts deep into Rand, causing a spray of blood that darkens the grass around the duelists.

So... the good news is Rhon still has his first aid gloves on, and because Sennaka has been pushing forward, the combatants are quite close to the pathfinders' side...

Kazuo appears to be a shapeshifter of some sort, and was simply shifting into another form. Quite likely his natural form. You can attempt a knowledge planes to identify him.

You can also attempt another knowledge planes for the tengu to realise that they are a little special. With the way the duel is going, this might end up being relevant quite soon...

See, that's the kind of luck Rand needs.

The tengu are yamabushi tengu, a type of oni with supernatural abilities, including wings on their back that allow them to fly while retaining the use of their hands. 4 more questions can be asked.

Ogre magi generally have:
1. Low reflex and high fort
2. Spell resistance and regeneration (overcome by fire or acid)
3. Shapechanger, alter self or giant form 1; spell-like abilities (the offensive spell-like abilities are cone of cold, deep slumber and charm monster each 1/day)

Yamabushi tengu generally have:
1. High fort and reflex, low will
2. spell resistance, blur 1/day
3. steal voice (basically a target silence with a will save to negate) spell like abilities offensive ones are hideous laughter 3/day, ray of enfeeblement (3/day), scorching ray (3/day), glitterdust (1/day)
4. susceptible to pattern spells (-2 on will save)

42, Rand needs a breath of life!

Rand quaffs his potion and adopts a stance, but Sennaka's relentless assault and uncanny luck finds him ripping a tendon in Rand's leg and opening him to a devastating cut across his torso. Rand hits the ground, his lifeblood flowing freely into the ground.

Sennaka gives a cry of triumph as he raises his bloody blade above his head. His troops give a rousing cry as he points his blade towards the rest of you.

With the duel won, Sennaka has pretty much declared your lives forfeit.

Aye, well, he does have a 15-20 threat range and a +2 to confirm crits. XD But that double-20s on the last iterative attack was... unlucky. On the plus side, you will live! Well, provided Rhon lives till his turn...

I take it Earl is indeed underground, as he had no reason to surface yet. At the moment, only Matamahand 42 are invisible, so I will take it that 42 has readied an action to cast dimension door as soon as everyone is adjacent to him and Matamah signals his presence by tapping him on the shoulder as a free action. That will allow 42 to dimension-door everyone away. But before that...

The samurai appear to begin to advance, but delay a little as one of the tengu squawks a command in Tien (which only the non-conscious Rand understands). Matamah and 42 have a moment to realise that the tengu are looking straight at them. Two of the tengu point towards your group, spreading glittery dust over your entire party (except Earl who is still below ground).

The remaining 4 point towards 42 excitedly and caw, "Ningen! Ningen!"

The remaining samurai advance, drawing their bows as they move. They seem to divide themselves into two units, with one targeting Rhon and the other targeting 42.

Vs Rhon
attack roll: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
attack roll: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20
attack roll: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
attack roll: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28

Vs 42
attack roll: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
attack roll: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14
attack roll: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15
attack roll: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22

Fortunately, they do not appear to be that capable with their bows, and all their shots miss.

Appreciating the dire circumstances, Matamah and Rhon move towards 42. Fortunately, Sennaka does not appear to bother with joining the melee for now, content to let his minions finish you off. Seizing the opportunity, 42 casts his spell, extracting the party from the combat.

Combat is now over. 42 has extracted you from the battlefield. I assume you are as far from the garrison as 42's spell will take you. What do you wish to do now?

Breath of life was successful.
You are whereever 42 has d-doored you to, which I presume is beyond the compound of Shuryo Onsen.

As you asses your surroundings and Rand sputters back to life from Rhon's timely intervention, Matamah hears Exiel's voice in his head.

"There are reports of a commotion at Shuryo Onsen. What is the progress of your mission? Give situation report in twenty-five words or less."

Matamah realises that Exiel is using a sending spell, and can convey a 25-word reply.

42 whacks Rand across the back of the head. "Foolish fighter. When have one on one duels done anything?" mumbling around, "Now they know we are after them... the defense will be stronger."

To be fair, I expected Rand to win that fight. If Rand had won init and started slugging without bothering with the potion, there's a pretty good chance he would have won.

Have some time to RP, and once Matamah sends his reply to Exiel, I'll progress the plot. Feel free to help Matamah with his reply as well.

"You know we don't have time to wait until morning, right? The people providing us a distraction are probably fighting for their lives."

With that, Rand stands up and dusts himself off.

Matamah likes 42's reply.

"Initial scouting of the facility is done, will move onto the next part of the plan in the morning. Will report again after successful completion."

"Now, let's get healed up?"

Matamah will use any wands the party has (roll your own healing), or will start using his own if we are getting short.

Wow! We have been gone less than a minute at this point. How much backup could he have gotten in such a short period of time?

He hasn't gotten backup at the moment, but Matamah's message said that you were gonna try again in the morning. Come morning, even if Sennaka is still there, the place will be crawling guards.

Exiel also assumes that if Sennaka now knows there are people after him, he's not just going to be sitting there waiting for you to try again. To Exiel's mind, the likelihood is that either Sennaka will relocate himself, prepare his garrison for a second attempt, or both. He could be wrong though. How often do Venture Captains make the right assumptions about your mission? XD

If you want to return to the garrison and try to complete the mission despite the unfavourable odds, you can certainly try. The only thing certain is that waiting till morning is most likely not a viable option.

So... raid Shuryo Onsen again, or return to base?
