Alden continues to try to move toward his allies, breaking through any of the stupid barriers he needs to.... likely to no avail.
I honestly have no clue how I can help here. :-S
Rand, The Iron Fist
|
Okay, then I will just keep moving forward, breaking through walls as I go.
| FiddlersGreen |
Reuniting with Naala would be a good idea, Alden. Alot of your abilities work best when you are next to an ally, and these walls are really affecting your ability to help your allies. At least on Naala, you can protect each other.
You can roll your attack and damage before posting your action for round 3. You both suffer a 20% miss chance against each other due to the the shadow partially hiding behind the shogi screen.
attack roll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 4
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 22
Unforunately, the earth elemental is slow and easy to hit, and this time the shadow reaches far enough to make contact. Earl feels a chill seeping into his stony bones. Take 4 STR damage.
reflex save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
It recoils instinctively from the light, pulling back into the shogi screen just in time to avoid being affected too much by the light. A split second later, it is back, rasping in anger as it reaches for your face.
attack roll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 8
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 93
Unfortunately, you prove an easy target for the creature to touch, and it sinks its arm deep into your torso. You shudder as a chill spreads through your body, sapping your strength rapidly. There is no doubt... you know exactly what this thing is - a Greater Shadow!
Using your previous knowledge roll, you can ask 1 question about them.
You hear the sound of a spell being cast, and then a pained gasp. It sounds like Itamar. You tear down one of the screens easily and move towards the sound, when suddenly another of those shadowy creatures (or is it the same one?) bursts from walls of the new square you are in, and reaches for you!
attack roll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 3
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 45
This time you are ready for it, and you easily evade its touch.
Because you can see the adjacent squares, you get the most interesting round.
You see Rand tearing down a screen and stepping into the square beside Alden. You see a shadowy creature reappear from the direction that the previous one attacked you from (quite possibly the same one), but instead of going for you, it goes for Rand and touches him before flying off again. It appears these creatures are skilled in making flyby attacks.
These are the 9 squares around you that you can see:
F.A.R
_M_
___
F.=42; A.=Alden; R=Rand; M=Matamah; _=empty square
Just when you think you are going to be fine, however, another one of those creatures flies towards you. As it moves through the shogi screen, it responds to your images in much the same way, surprised that there are 7 of you, and it rasps in anger as it takes a swipe at one of you.
attack roll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 9
However, it is so disoriented with surprise that it does not even strike one of your images. It moans in anger as it flies back the way it came from.
GM hint: It might be a good idea to clue your allies in on the attack patterns of these things, and that there are at least 2 of them flying around.
You then see Alden scratching at the shogi screen between the two of you, but you doubt he will do enough damage to the screen before it reforms.
Alden, you think you may need some help tearing down the shogi screens. They seem to be re-forming faster than you can damage them.

Rhon continues to hold his ground, ready to strike.
The screen appears to be reforming behind you, but you realise that it is actually somewhat smoky and insubstantial now that you look at it closely. What remains of the screen is now transparent to you, though it still appears as a smoky remnant.
You know that greater shadows are fast (high reflex) but not very solid (low fortitude), though they are also undead and so are immune to effects that target a creature's physiology.
What is the target of your dispel? The shogi screens are blocking your line of sight/effect. The best you can do is dispel the screens around you, but removing the screens will mean that the shadows will also have a slightly easier time hitting you, and I really don't think you want to take another hit from any of them. The shadowy creature reaches for him...
attack roll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 3
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 92
And Earl feels even more of his strength ebbing away. The shadow cackles as it withdraws back into the wall.
Another shadow appears from the other side of the now-15x15ft square that the three of you occupy. It hesitates a little when it realises that alot of the walls are gone, but seeing the weakened Itamar still where he was, sees no reason to stop attacking the cleric...
attack roll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 8
Ok, this is bad. Itamar, I've looked at your character sheet, and the only way out I see for you is if you use your divine intervention feat and force a reroll. I also recommend you use one of your highest level spells, since this is potentially fatal... If you have anything else up your sleeve, this is also the time to use it.
Its business done, the shadow pulls back from Itamar and back into the wall (though because it has no wall to hide behind, Itamar can get an attack of opportunity as it flies back).
Before you have time to celebrate your finding of Alden and Matamah, two shadows appear from behind and reach for you. Turns out, you've put yourself in the path of the shadow that would have gone for Matamah.
attack roll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

Matamah has a dimension door scroll in hand, and I know that Alden can see around him, and I know that they are having little trouble seeing around here. I'd love to go to Itamar and Rhon and bring them over near Alden, into a place where I know he can see them. The fact that he can give someone +16 dodge bonus to AC is absolutely invaluable to this battle, plus it'd be great to get everyone in one place near each other, plus it may make your job easier. :)
So, basically, I want to move over and get them dimension doored next to Alden and where he can see them. It's more important that they get near him than me, if possible, due to my mirror image. Hopefully that's possible and I've got it right what's going on.

If the fight is confusing, that's good. This encounter is supposed to throw players off and see how quickly they work out a solution. Some of you have already discovered important clues, but you need to share information with each other. But then of course, you may not be the only ones listening... ;)
When I played through this, 1 out of the 4 players died before we got out, and the GM commented that this was possibly the most dangerous encounter of the book. You guys have the advantage of this being pbp, so you have more time to think of solutions. Also, Alden is a very big trump card against the shadows if you can leverage his abilities. Itamar seems to have given you a very good place for that. =)

Moment of truth: 1d20 + 11 - 6 ⇒ (3) + 11 - 6 = 8
The shadow reaches out for Itamar's heart, but at the very last moment, a burst of divine energy issues from the cleric's chest and repels the dark creature. Itamar knows he has Torag to thank for his averted demise... and that he's not out of the woods yet.
That was close. But you're still on 4 STR.
42 is surprised to find that the first screen he moves through leads to a 15ftx15ft square bordered by more shogi screens. There are no enemies in sight, but in the middle of the room is a very weary looking Itamar. The floor and ceiling above him look like clouds of dark shadow. With Itamar are Earl and Rhon, both of whom look very much on edge and point their weapons at you as you enter, only to relax when they see it is only you. It's almost as if they were expecting something or someone else to approach them through the walls.
42, that was only 5ft of movement. Do you want to keep moving, or do you just want to wait beside Itamar.

Itamar begins a prayer.

Itamar casts Daylight on top of his shovel
| FiddlersGreen |
Meanwhile, Rand, Alden and Matamah group up, and Matamah casts his transportation spell, bringing all three of them into a 15ftx1ft space. Rhon, Earl and Itamar are already there looking very beleaguered. Itamar's shovel is glowing brilliantly, but this does not hide an oddity in the 'room' - whilst it is bordered by shogi screens and is mostly covered by a wooden floor and ceiling, the 5ftx5ft space in the middle has but a shadowy darkness for a floor and ceiling.
Since the plan was to have Alden protecting all of you, I will assume Matamah managed to tell Itamar the he needed to move to let Alden take the middle.
You take up position around Alden and brace yourselves for the shadows' assault.
And assault they do. The first comes in the direction of Earl, who has been weathering a rather consistent assault from one of the shadows. It reaches in for the Earth Elemental, who takes the opportunity to strike as well.
Earl's attack roll: 1d20 + 14 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 14 - 4 = 14
Earl's attack damage roll: 2d6 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (2, 3) + 7 - 4 = 8
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 48
Shadow 1's attack roll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27
Shadow 1's damage damage roll: 1d8 ⇒ 3
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 82
Earl swings ineffectually at the shadow, which responds by reaching out to touch the earth elemental yet again. Alden is quick to respond, but with even he in unable to prevent the lumbering earth elemental from being touched by the shadow. Earl takes another 3 STR damage
The next shadow appears from the other direction, expecting to see Itamar again...but is surprised to see, not one, but 7 Matamahs and a whole lot of other targets where he had been whittling down the cleric. It moans silently as it reaches for the bard.
Shadow 2's attack roll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Shadow 2's damage damage roll: 1d8 ⇒ 7
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 69
1d7 ⇒ 1
Well, unfortunately Matamah's normal touch AC is rather low too...
Once more, Alden rushes to help, but even he is not able to compensate for Matamah's lack of dexterity. The shadow reaches for one of the Matamahs at random, and is pleased when it finds itself touching solid flesh. That's some real bad luck there. Matamah takes 7 STR damage
The next two shadows approach from the other corners, going for Rhon and Rand respectively.
Shadow 3's attack roll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18
Shadow 3's damage damage roll: 1d8 ⇒ 6
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 43
Shadow 4's attack roll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
Shadow 4's damage damage roll: 1d8 ⇒ 4
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 31
This time, Alden is on the ball and manages to fend off the shadows while pulling his friends out of the way of the shadows' touches. Matamah's strategy appears to be having some effect, but you will need to also have a strategy of dealing with the shadows before they whittle you all down one by one...
