"They're going to take us to the reception room. I'm sure that nothing bad will come of that."
"My friend is concerned about or safety, given that we were attacked on the docks."

![]() |

42 is here... bad weekend.
42 pulls out a scroll from his pack and hands it to our paladin friend. "Use this on our friend Rand, who went swimming with the fishes. It should bring him back up to full strength." My one and only scroll of Lesser Restoration.

FiddlersGreen |

42, lesser restoration won't restore a negative level.
Ok, looks like the party's not splitting up.
You follow the woman through a sand-strewn courtayrd to what you assume must be the reception room. Shoji screens form the walls of this large, tatami-floored room. A lantern hangs from the center of the ceiling, filing the room with yellow light. Under the lantern stands a traditional, four-legged shogi-ban table, with two pillows for players to sit upon and two small side tables for captured pieces. A game seems to be in progress on the shogi-ban.
If you wish to inspect the game or the shogi-ban itself, feel free to make an INT check. The game seems use an INT check to determine whether your character knows how to play the game or is any good at it.
With that, the woman leaves you in the reception room and heads towards the kitchen.

![]() |

Int Check: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16

FiddlersGreen |

Rand is clearly not only fluent in Tian but also in the traditional strategy game of that continent. He studies the position of the pieces carefully.
Rand, you can teach the others how to play the game using the shogi-ban here if you wish. Alternatively, if another player already knows how to play the game, you can attempt to complete the game with one of the other players as your opponent. This will be an opposed INT check, with one of the sides taking a penalty due to the positioning.
The rest of you can also make INT checks to examine the position of the pieces, or you can examine the board and the pieces themselves.

![]() |

Intelligence Check inspecting the game: 1d20 ⇒ 2
Intriguing, but I have no idea how it works. I am not familiar with this culture.

![]() |

Sorry, generally I am not able to get online as much on weekends, as I'm usually doing things with my wife and the little one. I have no problem with the story progression. :)

Rhon looks over the board and pieces in an attempt to figure out how it might be played. "What an odd game. Rhon says as he shrugs.

FiddlersGreen |

The woman returns as you are looking over the board. She is carrying a tray with a teapot, some teacups and a plate of rice crackers and roasted peanuts. A hazy trail of vapor rises from the spout of the teapot.
"I see two of you know the game. Will you be playing a match whilst waiting for the master to return, or shall I clear the table for the refreshments?"
The shogi-ban board is carved and drawn into the table.

![]() |

I would love to try a new game if anyone is up for it

FiddlersGreen |

It woud be a simple opposed INT check. At the moment, only Itamar and Rand know the game, but either one of you could show the others how to play. Is anyone going to oblige Itamar?

![]() |

"I may never have played this game but am willing to give it a shot. Who knows, maybe I will get lucky and pick up on it quickly." Rhon moves to sit across from Itamar so that he can give the game a go.
Int: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

"Here is how you play..." Rand will say then proceed to explain the basics of the game to those who are interested.

Int: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4...Hmmm looks as if we have tied Rhon

![]() |

"Is the game supposed to end in a draw like this Rand? said while gesturing at the board.

FiddlersGreen |

Oh my, a tie with low scores.
As soon as Itamar and Rhon conclude their match in a stalemate, you hear the soft sound of a shoji panel sliding open, and the figure of a dark-clad, middle-aged man with a long moustache and beard and wearing a tall courtier’s hat emerges from the shadows of the corridor. Walls of semisolid shadow rise from the floor, cutting the room off from the rest of the house. The man bows politely to the you, then indicates the shogi table with one long-nailed hand.
"A boring match, but what can you expect from amateurs? The match you saw before you was a much more interesting arrangement, don't you think?" he says as he sweeps his hand at the board. The pieces rearrange themselves into the arrangement the board was in when you first entered the waiting room.
“As you can see,” the man says, “one side is winning the game. But is it the King, or the Jade General? And where do you find yourself on the board?” He throws back his head and laughs diabolically, then disappears. Your vision swirls as more walls of semisolid shadow rise from the floor, creating individual 5ft partitions, and you feel yourself lurching through the air through the walls before suddenly being brought to a halt within one of the partitions. None of you see any of your fellows around you. Even Naala and Earl are not with their respective masters!
Things are now happening in real time, so I'll put you all in initiative. Keep in mind that you can't see anyone else in your 5ft partition, so you have no idea where you are or which direction you are facing. Act accordingly.

Before I decide Matamah's action, he has Blindsight 40 ft. from Echolocation (So sound-based blindsight). Does that penetrate any of the walls here, or is there anything in this little 5x5 partition with him? Just making sure that doesn't change things. :p

Alden and Rhon?
Edit: Alden, you felt yourself being whisked...somewhere. You are in a 5ft by 5ft space bordered by shogi screens on all sides, and you can hear your allies calling out various observations from beyond the shogi screens. One of the observations is that you appear to be on some sort of oversized shogi board. Naala is not with you, but I'll say that you can hear her whimpering in confusion somewhere in a certain direction.
Edit 2: 42 is pretty much right.
Edit 3: You can do it for free this round, but from round 2 onwards, I'll call it a DC15 perception check plus modifiers for distance to use any sound as a point of reference to move towards. It will be a move action to try to focus on the sound, which should not be an issue since the need to destroy the shogi screens to move through them means that you can't move more than 5ft per round anyway. 42 might find that his blinking changes things a little.
Edit 4: Rhon will be able to tell you that Earl senses 8 individuals, including Earl himself, via tremorsense. You can also hear Naala whimpering somewhere from a different direction.

I am going to try hewing through the corner I think Earl is through.
Attacking the shadowy wall closest to were I think Earl is.
Attack: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (16) + 16 = 32
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

FiddlersGreen |

Rhon takes a swing in the opposite direction and does some damage to the screen, but does not manage to break it. Shortly after, you hear another similar ripping sound far off in the same general direction.
Your relative positions are:
EI._
_R
E=Earl; I.=Itamar; R=Rhon; _=empty 5ft square
The shogi screens around the 4 of you remain opaque.
You hear a distinctive noise somewhere between shattered glass and torn canvas, and pummel down the shogi screen between yourself and the sound, but you see only an empty 5x5 square similar to the one you are in. You move forward into the new square.
Unfortunately, the squares that I rolled for these guys were also very close to you...
Suddenly, two dark shadowy forms emerge from the walls, one from beside Earl and another from beside Rhon. Both reach for their respective targets with shocking speed, and Earl in particular has only a moment to wonder why its tremorsense had not detected these things.
attack roll vs Earl: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
pain: 1d8 ⇒ 1
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 1
attack roll vs Rhon: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
pain: 1d8 ⇒ 5
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 63
The shadowy figure reaching for Earl should have had an easy strike, but in its haste to withdraw back into the wall, pulls back just a moment too soon and stops short of touching Earl. Rhon however suffers a caress by the other shadowy form immediately feels a dark chill seep through his bones, leaving him significantly drained. Then as quickly as they struck, the shadowy figures withdraw back into the wall. And Earl still feels nothing through the earth concerning them.
Rhon takes 5 points of strength damage. If you made your DC16 will save earlier in the round, you saw the creature coming and can take an attack of opportunity as it touches you and then flies back through the walls out of sight. [ooc]Flyby attack[/ooc]
Suddenly you feel a chill passing by you. You turn your head just in time to see a black shadowy form emerging from the wall beside you. It looks like it was about to pass you by, but then notices you and reaches out towards you instead...
attack roll vs flat-footed touch: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
pain: 1d8 ⇒ 7
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 83
You are fast, but the shadowy figure is faster, and manages to brush your arm. It is a slight touch, but it is enough to make you feel some of your strength ebbing from your limbs.
Rand takes 7 points of STR damage, less the reduction from your ring of inner fortitude (so 5) - good buy! Also...it was actually heading towards someone else, but you were in its path, so it saw you and went for you instead. XD
You hear a distinctive noise somewhere between shattered glass and torn canvas, from one direction and then again from another.
Suddenly you feel a chill behind you. You wheel around just in time to see a black shadowy arm reaching out from the wall behind you...but a soft sepulchral moan of frustration issues forth when it sees that there are 8 of you.

You recognise the creature that just attacked you, and it sends a shiver down your spine. It is a greater shadow...
Itamar, 42 and Alden, the two of you are probably going to start hearing things from the others. 42 and Alden, this might influence your actions, potentially. 42, you can change your action if you wish. If not, you find that blinking does not enable you to see through the shogi screens, but it does allow you to pass through them.
Try to read only the spoilered parts that are relevant to you. I'm taking alot of effort to work out what each of you is likely to see and hear.
Oh and Matamah...good call on that mirror image! Could have been VERY nasty for you...
Need actions from Alden and Naala, and need 42 to confirm he is keeping his action and say whether or not he wants to use his move action. And then something else happens at the end of the round...

The surface you're standing on appears to be wooden, like the surface of a shogi-ban table, except that it's a little...shadowy.

Rhon raises his axes and swings through a corner of his partition. It tears apart with a distinctive noise somewhere between shattered glass and torn canvas. He is not quite able to cut down the walls, but through the damaged timber frame, he is able to see that he is both adjacent to Itamar and at a diagonal angle to Earl. Itamar for his part gets the scare of his life when the axe come swinging through the shogi screen behind him, and is relieved to see that it is only Rhon.

FiddlersGreen |

Itamar, you can't be sure since you didn't get a good look at the thing, but from the description, it seems to be some sort of shadow, or a variant of it. They drain strength with a touch, and those that have all their strength stolen die and rise again shortly after as shadows themselves! They are incorporeal and capable of noiseless flight, which might explain why they appear to attack out of the walls - they're passing right through them. The walls here give them an advantage...
In the interests of moving things forward, I'll assume 42 just activates his ring for now.
Alden bashes at the wall, trying to head towards where he thinks he heard his nearest ally. 42 activates his ring of blinking... and then it happens.
Rand, Alden, Rhon, Itamar and Earl watch in consternation as the walls reform to the condition they were in before. If you call to your allies, you find that they are still where they were relative to you, but the walls appear to reform very regularly...

Since your bardic music only requires them to hear you, it will work. You can interact with the shogi-screens to get a will save to see through them (negating some of the advantage of whatever is attacking you), or you can try to break it with a Strength check or by rolling damage against it. But some of your friends can tell you that the walls appear to restore themselves at very frequent intervals.
Btw, Rhon, your attack of opportunity missed. These things seems quite mobile when it comes to moving through threatened squares. ;)
