Boge Granitefist |
@GM: I think this is the breakdown of Jaysin's damage: +2 str, +2 specialization, +1 point blank, +1 enhancement, +4 from deadly aim
Boge performs an examination on the bodies.
Heal: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (15) + 15 = 30
Floggentop Wizzbottle III |
Wizzy casts Detct Magic and looks around..
Perc: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17
He also pulls a wand of curing and tops everyone off..
Heal Voros: 4d8 + 4 ⇒ (3, 4, 5, 6) + 4 = 22
Jaysin Deckert |
That is correct as EF has it. He would know, Jaysin has been in enough of his games. I should have stated all that since this is likely my first game with you, apologies for assuming you knew.
What about these blokes here, they look dead to me. Maybe give them a proper search before we move on? Jaysin doesn't look like he is about to touch the bodies, however.
Aviendha-RK |
"Havok go seek if you can detect anything in the area, maybe there are more creature around." Aviendha asks her companion.
handle animal: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19
perception Havok: 1d20 + 5 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 5 + 8 = 32
Havok has both seek and detect tricks. Both run on his perception
The hippogriff screeches in confirmation and flies around the room sniffing around for weird scents and sights.
Voros |
Panting, Voros answers Aviendha, handing her a wand of cure light wounds:
"I may need... A little healing. Would you mind...?"
DM Stylz |
@ Jaysin: no worries. Just wanted to make sure is all :)
@ Aviendha: I cannot find the "detect" trick? Please reference or link :) thanx :)
Voros gets some of his wounds healed, but still feels pretty beats up.
Wizzy, after healing his exploring buddy, casts detect magic again, hoping this time he isn't interrupted...he isn't.
He goes around, and finds a handful of goodies as he searches the room. The ghoul has a ring of protection +2. The dead, twisted wreckage that used to be a man in the pool of sludge (area 11), had a cloak of protection +1 and ring of swimming. The twisted flesh of a man, slumped against the altar had a pair of bracers of armor +1, and a wand of chill thouch, with 15 charges left.
so to recap: +1 bracers of armor, wand chill touch (15 charges), ring protection +2, cloak resistance +1, ring swimming
On the altar is a book, despite being stained and damp, is still in fairly good condition. The book itself is relatively large, weighing 10 pounds and consisting of about 500 pages of thin parchment. The cover bears a large inset crystal and a series of metal insect-like clasps along the edges lock down and keep the book from being opened.
To the south (area 12), This cavern contains what looks to have been a campsite for five, judging by the number of empty bedrolls along the walls. A few shelves with scattered books on them, a fire pit, and even a crude wooden table provide the furnishings for the site.
Intel check or disable device check if you want to open the book.
Knowledge arcana on the book in general
Jaysin Deckert |
If no one else does Jaysin will use the ring of protection +2 for the time being.
So what's the book all about?
Intel: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Voros |
"*Cough* May I give it a try, Idemi?"
Disable Device: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (4) + 18 = 22
Knowledge (Arcana): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15
Seriously? xD
Aviendha-RK |
should be in animal archive. Also wouldn't it be better if one of the frontliners take the ring?
"If you boys are done playing with the book... Let's explore further. "

DM Stylz |
Wizzy, can tell that the book is a copy of a copy. That isn't very rare as it is such and old tome, so there is nothing unusual about it being a copy.
Don't forget, the book can be taken with you above ground as well to see if the Mayor can get it open and decipher it if nobody can get it open. It is a DC 25 intel/disable device check to get it open
Voros |
"Ok, let's go further." Voros takes the book in his backpack.
Boge Granitefist |
Boge puts on the bracers (which won't stack with his mage armor but just in case) but leaves the ring of protection to someone else (I can spend ki on AC if I need-unless none of the other frontliners wants it, of course).
Boge lets the others deal with the book but will offer to carry it along if no one else wants to carry it. He then checks each of the passages for anything interesting, particularly looking for concealed doors and the like. If he finds nothing he motions that everyone return to the surface and report the findings.
Aviendha-RK |
I can buff as a swift action so no need on my end.
Voros |
Yay!
Before putting the book in his bag, Voros tries to open it a little bit longer...
Disable Device: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (19) + 18 = 37
"HA! It wasn't that hard..."
DM Stylz |
With another try at the book, and a little more patience by Voros, he manages to figure out how to open the book. He looks at the book, but it is written in a language he doesn't understand, but tells Wizzy about it.
Wizzy, still under the effects of comprehend languages, takes a look at the book, and sees it is written in Aklo, a very very old language.
The inside cover of the book bears the following inscription: “May we, the Keepers of the Oldest, prevail over the scourge of simplistic thought and lesser men.”
\Wizzy, how much are you going to read...reading the whole book will take awhile...or are you going to skim it?
Voros |
Has anyone explored area 12?
DM Stylz |
Viros, not yet, but I did give a short description a few posts above
Wizzy, sees under the inscription 5 names scrawled in what appears to me the same spidery script:
Keeper Baskerwhel
Keeper Crove
Keeper Hyve
Keeper Marshan
Keeper Myre
A section near the end cautions those who would attempt this ritual, warning that forcing open such portals draws forth the spiritual essence of the casters, and that any entity contacted by the portal can make hideous use of this essence by consuming it, growing more powerful in the bargain, such that only the end of such essence can challenge the intruder’s rights upon your world.
Floggentop Wizzbottle III |
"I would say its possible someone made a dark pact and drew whatever's rampaging the town from one of the outer planes.. Do any of these names look familiar to you all?"
Wizzy wil take 20 for a 38 on Know Local for the names written..
DM Stylz |
Wizzy, thinks back to the lore of Carrion Hill that he learned as a young Society member.
Glem Baskerwhel is a hunch-backed hermit who lives in the Wrythe about a day’s travel east of Carrion Hill. The swamp druid is nonetheless well known in Carrion Hill as a potion-maker, and he visits the city often, always staying with his friend Arlend Hyve at the Elm Way Church on these visits. The body, lying in the sludge bears a resemblance to this man, but the condition of the body you cannot be sure as it is mangled beyond reproach.
Waldur Crove is well known as the warden of Crove’s Asylum, a building located in the Crown that the Crows have long used to dispose of lunatics and the insane too dangerous to keep in regular prisons.
Arlend Hyve is an authority on regional history and lore, a sage who dwells in an abandoned church of Aroden on Elm Way on the southern slope of the Tangles. There are whispers that he dabbles in the black market poison and drug trade.
Sulm Marshan is a goggle-eyed man said to have moved to Carrion Hill recently from the coastal town of Illmarsh; he owned and lived in the house in Slipper Market that was destroyed this morning. The twisted wreckage slumped against the altar bears a resemblance to this man, although you cannot be certain.
Rupman Myre is a middenstone baron. He owns a large vathouse down in the Filth along the river banks, and is rumored to be involved with illegal necromancy, but to date the Crows have not been able to find enough evidence to arrest him.
Aviendha-RK |
"Hmmm so that is five individuals that are possibly starting a dark ritual and we must stop all five? Quite a list."
DM Stylz |
K arcana check please
Idemi, thinks to what Wizzy mentioned a few moments ago, about making "hideous use of this essence by consuming it, growing more powerful in the bargain, such that only the end of such essence can challenge the intruder’s rights upon your world". He can't understand about how it fits together.
Voros |
Knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
Floggentop Wizzbottle III |
Wizzy takes 10 for a 27 Know Arcana..
He also shares what he knows about the 5 names mentioned. "I think Glem and Sulm's remains are over there so that confirms that all 5 Keepers are involved with what happened here.. The campsite with 5 bedrolls also confirms this. Two of them are dead and perhaps the ghoul was another one." Does the ghoul wear clothes or have any identifiable features?
DM Stylz |
Nothing about the ghoul seems to be connected to the Keepers.
Wizzy, recalls the back of the book, and the notes about the "creature being tied to those who summoned it".
He realized that if the entity kills the summoners, it gains power...but if anyone else kills the summoners or moves them far enough away from the entity that connection is severed, limiting its power.
Aviendha-RK |
would there be a way to confirm the identities those two bodies? Not sure we searched them already?
-Posted with Wayfinder
Voros |
"Well it looks that we have three more individuals to find. Do we have to search the area further or can we get back up?"
Idemi N'josk |
"If we wanta be absolutely sure which ones we got here, I tink da best way ta confirm which a dese five we got here is ta talk to da mayor, see which a dese keepas ain't shown dere face around town in awhile."
Idemi taps his pen against his mask. "Dese fellows sound like dey probably have some good artifacts for de Archive, so we may wanta talk to de mayor about securing dose for later."
He grins. "Once we done wit' whatever's killin' dese men, of course."
Aviendha-RK |
"I think there's one tunnel we haven't explored yet. And the ring suggests something might be on the other side of the small lake."
-Posted with Wayfinder
Jaysin Deckert |
Then we better get to it. I don't want to spend the rest of my life down here. Somebody lead the way.
Floggentop Wizzbottle III |
"I think our next move should be to locate the 3 remaining men. Perhaps the crows can help in this task.. No doubt the creature is searching for them as well. It gets stronger if it eats them so we need to move with haste before it becomes to powerful to deal with.."
Just to recap we have left:
Waldur Crove is well known as the warden of Crove’s Asylum, a building located in the Crown that the Crows have long used to dispose of lunatics and the insane too dangerous to keep in regular prisons.
Arlend Hyve is an authority on regional history and lore, a sage who dwells in an abandoned church of Aroden on Elm Way on the southern slope of the Tangles. There are whispers that he dabbles in the black market poison and drug trade.
Rupman Myre is a middenstone baron. He owns a large vathouse down in the Filth along the river banks, and is rumored to be involved with illegal necromancy, but to date the Crows have not been able to find enough evidence to arrest him.
"We should inform the Mayor and the Crows and head to whichever one is closest.."
Boge Granitefist |
Boge once again nods in agreement with Wizzy's plan and leads the way back up to the surface to find the Mayor or anyone else willing to help. He passes out more pamphlets proclaiming the Good News about the Green Faith along the way.
Aviendha-RK |
should we do something with the lake since we found the ring or will it lead to a dead end as well?
-Posted with Wayfinder
Jaysin Deckert |
Yes, very well. Keep the solicitations to a minimum though. We really don't need the attention.
DM Stylz |
The group realizes, that the only thing left to do is go topside, and figure out about these Keepers and hopes they can find them before whatever entity finds time and grows stronger. The figure maybe Mayor Heggry may know more about the people on the list.
Once topside, they find the Slipper Market in a state of chaos, even more so than the time they were below ground. The Crows are in full force, trying to keep the riots and looting to a minimum. The streets that were abandoned when you arrived, are starting to fill with panicked people, who are trying to arrange transport out of the city.
Upon returning to the mayors building, the Crows standing guard, allow you to pass. You enter Mayor Heggry's office, he eagerly looks at you for a report, what you found out, and the status of finding this threat.
Aviendha-RK |
"Show him the book. We are looking for three individuals that are performing an evil ritual. Arlend Hyve, Sulm Marshan and Rupman Myre"
Voros |
Voros hands the book.
