Hi! I've played a couple PFS games before, though I'm rather new to PbP and I can't seem to find the guide to online play, though I did find the guide to organized play on the resources page. If someone could point me in the right direction that'd be most appreciated! I'd love to be a part of this low level thing, I can come up with a new 1st level fairly quickly. I'm good with playing just about anything from sneaks to walking band-aids to buffalo riders. I think I will roll a Human Fighter to start with, though...

Farmer Mo - yeah, I took a look at your alias after I posted - looks like we'll have to find our social skills elsewhere.
oohlookashiny - below are the links to the basic and advanced guides to Pbp. The first gives you the how-to on formatting and such, and the second tells you how to be good at it, for everyone's greater enjoyment.

DM Kludde |

DaWay, Farmer Mo, Khelreddin, Lord Zekk: I've put up the discussion thread here. Please dot in, I'll start the game when we're all in.
To everybody expressing interest: thank! I'm sorry if I'm not responding to everybody personally. Feel free to put up your name in the spreadsheet that is linked at the very top. One entry per player.
crthesis: I'll try to find you something you can play for the next opening (which should be soon-ish).

DM Kludde |

@Dm Rah: Go ahead and poach the list idea, it wasn't mine to start with and others are doing it. Let me be cheeky and invite you to become a recruiting DM on this list (that would be novel)

DM DoctorEvil |

If that's the case I'll take a group for First Steps.
If I read the spreadsheet right, that'd be crthesis, Pedwiddle (who I play with now), cyrus9553, and Merck. I'll leave a space for you to DM Kludde if you want to play as well.
I will try to get a discussion thread up and share the link here. If one of the chosen, can't/won't play, we'll slide down the list.

Dotting in with a question - like several others, I can't find the guide to online play. It's not under player resources. Yes, I've read the thread on how to format your text and all, but that doesn't say anything about the actual mechanics. for example - how does one go about putting a character into the system? How do the dice get rolled? Do I need to be on d20 or Google+ or anything like that, or is that only for real-time play? etc. Is there anything like that anywhere?
Thanks in advance! Hopefully the responses will enlighten the other newbies as well :)

Khelreddin |

I don't know of a thread that tackles all of these mechanics in one place, though it may be out there. In regards to your particular questions, here are some quick answers. If they're not immediately clear, let me know and I can elaborate:
Putting a character into the system: The character is played under an 'alias.' It looks like you already have several, so I'm not sure what your question is here. Once you post in the gameplay thread for a given PbP, you'll show up as a character for that game.
Rolling dice: Follow the example given below under the spoiler button that says "How to format your text" - it's the last item under that spoiler. Once you type in the dice code, you can hit 'preview' and it will show you the result. This is useful because it can tell if you've done well or badly on the roll, which helps you write up the result. If you're rolling an attack and your preview shows a 20, you can write up a graphic description of the attack succeeding, for example.
Google+, Roll20, etc.: These are mostly used for maps. Different DMs do their maps in different ways. Some will post them on Google Docs, some will use Roll20, some put them on various photo websites or dropbox, and some don't use maps at all. This will depend on the DM, and they'll provide a link to wherever you need to go to see the map.
I don't know if this is what you were looking for, but hopefully it's useful.

Formatting tags use square braces as delimiters.
I'll use curly braces for the discussion.
In character conversation: {b}"text"{/b}
In character THOUGHTS: {i}text{i}
Descriptive text: text
Dice: {dice=Attack Roll}1d20+37{/dice}
Out of Character conversation/thoughts: {ooc}text{/ooc}
Hidden text: {spoiler}text{/spoiler}
GENERALLZY tags are nestable. I don't think you can nest anything other than the dice mechanics inside a dice tag.
You load the information about your character into an alias with an appropriate name. Click on any of our accounts and browse the aliases. You should see a couple of formats, the most common of which is a Herolab output format.

My sister and I are interested in playing as a team in the intro modules. I've played some PFS, she's new to it, but she played Living Greyhawk so understands the idea of organized play. Both of us are new to PbP and we might need some basics on the tools the particular GM is using (I have a d20 account, she doesn't yet, I think she has G+ and I don't yet, etc).
I've added my character to the waitlist, but it shouldn't be assigned to anything until (and unless) she adds hers.

DM DoctorEvil |

I'd be up for First Steps, DM DoctorEvil. Would you be willing to accept Banon Thrune, my Ranger (Falconer), or Gian Battista, my Gunslinger (Pistolero), as a character? And, more importantly, do you have a preference?
No real preference, but if you had to drag it out of me, I'd take the Ranger.

DM DoctorEvil |

Thanks for the invite DM DoctorEvil but I have already played the whole first steps series. I know its repeatable but I would rather play something new so I will leave my spot open for the next person in the list. But please keep my name on the queue for future games.
Thanks for backing out graciously, Merck. The next name on the list is hustonj. Have a character to stick in First Steps, pardner?

I'm there!! (I'm surprised you didn't recognized Aashiana <g>) my character is Lunaea.

The die rolling example and map info are very useful - thank you!
What I'm still not sure of is, I see some key character info under some alias names. But I don't see anywhere to put that info in when creating an alias - there is space for the name and faction, but that's basically it. Do you just add all that stuff with formatted text in the name box? Also, I guess I thought that you would be putting in stats from your character sheet somewhere so that the GM could see it. Is that all on the honor system or?

I guess I didn't look beyond the fact that you have aliases, to see that they didn't contain complete character sheets. All of your character info should be put in your alias for that character (look at any of my aliases for an example). When you have the alias open, select, 'Edit my profile,' and where you've put your character background, you can paste in the character info, from Hero Lab, or whatever form you like to use. Anything you put in the 'Classes/Levels' or 'Gender' lines in your profile (and maybe 'Race' too, don't recall at the moment) will appear under under the alias name and above the avatar when you post. That's how people get their hit points, AC, etc. to show there.
Many people spoiler their background/appearance/etc. (within the 'About' box), so it doesn't fill up a bunch of space on their character profile. As you'll see in my aliases, lots of folks also put useful dice rolls in their alias, so you can just copy and paste them when needed. And finally, if you don't fill out all the little boxes on your character sheet (for abilities, languages, etc.) but just put them in the 'About' box instead, it ends up with a much neater, easier to read alias.
Did that get at your questions?

DM DoctorEvil |

Here is the link to Discussion for the First Steps game if you are in the next set.
Right now that's: Pedwiddle (Castien), DM Kludde, Saint Caleth (Anthea Karilla Ezil), crthesis (Ranger or Slinger), and cyrus9553 (Zalanda).
We'll see you over there.

I could bring the Tiefling Witch since he is at 0 XP, if the other 2 scenarios might be completed. I've never played either a Tiefling or a Witch before. If it ends up we need healing I would happily bring the 1 XP Aasimar Cleric though.
We'll say Witch for now with the option of making a call to the bullpen.

Khelreddin wrote:Did that get at your questions?Thanks a lot for that. I didn't do everything you suggested (eg preparing die rolls) but I now have a legal and decently formatted character sheet for Brodey in his alias profile out there if we get picked for an adventure.
Glad it was helpful. Once you've played a bit of PbP, you'll find prepared dice rolls are one of the better things to stick in your alias, but I'm glad you've got the set-up you needed. Have fun!

Probably true based on my other non-F2F experiences but I want to see how things work out in play before adding more to my profile. Likewise I'll probably come up with a preferred character sheet with more practice but for now, as a level 1 character, what I have should work ok.

Alrighty - after spending a lot of time on HeroForge and messing with my alias, I think she is ready to go - thanks! :)

I'm opening another game:
Calling:
cyrus9553
Merck
hustonj
Saint Caleth
Greycloak of Bowness
Have any of you done 5-11 already?
This is PFS's 'Ocean's Eleven' to The Disappeared's 'Mission: Impossible'.
Side note: I'll be on holiday during the first week of feb, and I don't plan to bring my laptop, which means posting will be very few and far between (i.e. some wayfinder posts). After that, business as usual (and more tables).
Edit: The link to the game is here. Please confirm by dotting at the thread.

If possible I'd like two of my characters to be added to the list. Shayla Amye (lv.1 elf ranger), and Clair Vavassour (lv.1 human cleric).
Shayla's been in your GRR campaign, but nothing else yet. Clair's a brand new character.
A few questions:
1) If a campaign is started, do I get to choose which character I want to play with or is it decided for me?
2) If a campaign is started and I'm in it, do I get a PM or do I have to keep checking this thread?
