Background and Appearance:
Prothero Crace hails from Taldor, the son of a lesser noble family with little hope of becoming a greater one. He spent his youth, and an unfortunate number of his adult years, amidst the self-serving, scheming nobles at the Taldan court. Though a thoughtful soul, Prothero is not naturally gifted in the calculating ways of court life, and found himself passed over for many opportunities because others had charmed, bribed or bullied to get what they wanted. He was a disappointment to his parents, and to himself, until he came to see that it was the court that was misguided and wrong, rather than himself. Not long after this realization, he determined he couldn’t stand it anymore, and decided to dedicate himself to something pure.
He left court with no real preparation and no goodbyes and, after wandering for a time, made his way to a community of brothers in Qadira, where he sought to retreat from the world. In spite of it marking him as a Taldan noble, he couldn’t bring himself to shave off his beard – he’d feel naked without it. He worked hard at the simple tasks of the community, appreciated the ordered, regular life, and found escape in a committed study of the bow. He was pleased to find that he excelled at it, and was proud to have a skill that he was coming to master. Sadly, his rising above his brothers in this arena stirred envy, and trouble followed, and he came to see that even in a small, tight-knit community, people schemed and strived and sought to better themselves at the expense of others. After struggling to come terms with this, he left the brotherhood as well, and returned to his wanderings, ending up in Absalom, where he hoped to be but a drop in a vast sea of humanity, untroubled by the schemes of his fellow men.
He soon made contact with the Pathfinder Society, and has decided to attempt a life with them. Its simple creed – ‘Explore, Report, Cooperate’ – gives him hope that he will find like-minded souls, who wish only to work together to achieve a goal, without selfish aims and hidden agendas. Whether it’s possible to find something so pure in Golarion remains a question he has yet to answer.
Prothero is older than many Pathfinders of his rank, having wasted years of his life at court and in monastic seclusion. He is a bit awkward at times, his thoughtful nature making him slow to read social situations – but he is a decent fellow. He dresses simply, in faded grey robes, his only extravagance a beautiful bow of black wood extending over his right shoulder. His coloring – the bronzed skin and brown hair – indicate his Taldan birth, and his neatly trimmed beard marks him as being of the noble blood of that land. But his calm, focused demeanor is very different from the typical scheming, simpering attendee of the court of Grand Prince Stavian III, and it is clear he has left that life behind.
