As the party dries itself off after the late night bath, the wind rustles the cool air and Kalkamedes once again tries to drudge forward before Amnur is ready.

With Orion and Shilyn watching Kalkamedes to make sure no more injuries occur, Amnur, Mylvwara, and Varian all realize why the Pathfinder's destination has been hard to track; about thirty feet ahead is a canyon that spans 30 feet across. The depth is hard to gauge at this distance.

Kalkamedes shows no sign of stopping as he continues to walk towards the edge of the cliff.

Varian walks to the edge and looks down while Amnur holds Kalkamedes back. He tries to gauge if the cliff is climbable in any manner... and wonders how to get Kalkamedes down the cliff-face if he can't be encouraged to climb himself. He looks from side to side as well, to see if the canyon narrows in either direction, with the idea of somehow spanning the canyon if it can't be climbed.

@Varian: The cliff goes down for a hundred feet give or take. The canyon itself goes on as far as you can see in the darkness in either direction. As far as the cliff walls are concerned, it appears that it would be quite difficult to climb the sheer cliff walls without support and/or tools.

@Shilyn: Without the rope, you'd feel VERY uncomfortable climbing down the ravine. With the moonlight's assistance, you can see this easily descends 100 feet down, and you're only 15 ft down yourself. You're going to need more rope, for sure.

@Mylvwara: You do not see anything particularly dangerous, other than the sheer rockwall that would make free climbing incredibly difficult.

With rope use, I'm reducing the DC of the climb from it's otherwise very high number to a DC of 10; typically, this would be a DC 5 check, but the slippery rock walls, make poor support to brace against. Still better than the DC 15 unknotted rope, however.

Amnur, holding steady against the pull of the rope calls out, "Can the rope be grappled onto anything on the other side? I got one in my pack." He seems to think for a bit, then adds, "And who else has rope?"

So try to grapple a tree or something on the other side, and who else has rope? Amnur is using one, Shi used one to climb a little ways down. Amnur owns 1. If we have 3-4 total Shi can reach the bottom.

*Edit* looking at everyone. Looks like we have 3 ropes. 1 used on Kalkamedes. So two extra for roughly 100' unless knotted. So try to grapple across with one of the 2 unused.

@Varian: As a gift to you (and to help out Amnur's number), we'll say Gryne used his rope before remembering he had a family emergency. So you still have your silk rope!

@Mylvwara: It is about a quarter mile by the time you'll reach a much easier part of the canyon (only 10' gap; this continues for a bit further). Walking to that point is going to take you about 25 rounds give or take. Are you ok with that?

@Amnur: With Shilyn using some rope to secure it topside and trying to combine, there will be just over 10' short of hitting the bottom. This does mean that I'll need an Acrobatics check to safely land.

@Amnur: D'oh, you're right! In lieu of that, Kalkamedes will be back 40' instead :)

Immediately, upon seeing Mylvwara try to chart out a better path, you pull hard and keep the Pathfinder at bay although he doesn't make it easy.

However, only once does the man overpower the dwarf and his allies, and even then Torag blesses him with the strength to pull him back.

Kalkamedes never stood a chance of continuing his journey the long way down.

Shilyn, what are you doing over this time period?

"Maybe if we could get one good climber up on the other side we can attach a rope to an arrow or bolt, shoot it across and the person on the other side can secure it to a tree or rock. If you guys wish to go this route, Amnur will be able to get Kalkamedes over to the narrower gap without penalty; the process will take about 15-20 minutes time given the slower speed and the occasionally successes that will counteract successful CMBs. Over the course of 15 minutes, it's tug of war back and forth, but ultimately, Amnur's heavier base and higher strength prevent Kalkamedes from making an untimely passage downward.

The gorge ahead narrows to just over 10' in width before opening up again. Mylvwara does take some note that a river must have been through here years and years ago, but now rocky terrain and a few sparse bushes and plants dominate the bottom that she can see.

Now... how to cross to the other side? A couple ideas were brought up, but a consensus, still!

Amnur thinks for a bit, "Let's just have everyone go to the other side except me and Varian, then string a couple ropes across. Then we'll give the end of this one tied to him Varian, who can climb across the gap while I hold the slack. Then when Varian's across we just let Kalkamedes go over the edge, still tied, and pull him up from the other side?"

@Shilyn: To point a GM note... it's still 100 ft down from this point. But only 10' across, which is only a 10 Acrobatics check to cross if you get a running start :)

So if I have a +5 athletics (and an extra +1 when jumping) I can just take 10 to get across? If so I do that, carrying one end of the rope with me. I missed the part about us walking to a narrower part of the cavern.
