As I prepare to cast one of my more powerful enchantments, I see Orion's graceful leap across the canyon.
"Well, that was impressive." I call enthusiastically and give a brief round of applause.

![]() |

"Now tie Kalk to that rope and pull him across gently to he doesn't smash up on the other side. Then we all have to get over quick to keep him from running off without us. Let's get to this..."

Brayden Green |

Do you want a rope tie roll for the tree? I have a +4 disable device.
If so:
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

![]() |

"I agree with Varian. Fashion a harness and I'll pull him across," she says with confidence. "Sure beats swinging him across.. well, from his standpoint anyway."

![]() |

@Orion: Either or; I could assume you could take 20, but that gives Kalkamedes more time to make a leap of faith :P It'd actually be Escape Artist for the roll, which for you would be roughly the same.
Kalkamedes CMB: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Kalkamedes puts more effort into breaking free this time, but still can't get past the dwarf's bulk.
@Shilyn: Give me an Escape Artist to work a harness; you may choose to take 10 on this, but in either case, it's going to be 1 minute to make the harness with the materials you have. After that, I'll need 2 successful grapple checks to hold Kalkamedes down long enough to strap him in.

![]() |

"Hey! A little help over here!" Orion yells to the stranger. "We have a man here who is trying to jump!"

![]() |

The man walks with an arrogant stride towards the assembled pathfinders.
"What is the matter here? I am Mahasi Mi Khaing, Pathfinder. You must be the ones I was sent to assist." He pauses. "Why is that man trying to jump?"

![]() |

"If only were it as easy as 'he is trying to jump'... instead he is willing to simply walk off the edge... We are instead trying to 'jump him' using this rope and harness. Our intention is to get him safely across." Varian smiles at the newcomer. "And it is good to meet you Mahasi. If you were sent to find us and assist, you too must be a Pathfinder, I'm assuming, so on that note, doubly well met."

![]() |

"You lack the magic necessary to transport him across. That is unfortunate."
He idly picks dirt from him his tunic.
"I wield the secret of magic and can cast dweomers to slow the a groups fall, if such a thing would help deal with these trivialities."

![]() |

"Might be handy if the harness fails. We want to keep him alive, and find out where he's trying to go, so getting him across is of primary importance. I don't suppose you have any translocation magics?"

![]() |

Mahasi gets an excited look. "I have been studying those; very interesting magic! Twisting the weave, therefore space, and forming a shortcut between the two. I have attempted such manipulations, yes!" He stops and frowns. "I attempted to translocate a cricket recently, but no luck. I hope he finds happiness in its next life. I will master it soon though."

As Shilyn starts crafting the harness, Kalkamedes continues to try and press forward, albeit at a diagonal angle now due to the party slowly dragging him so far off of "his" course. Only once does Kalkamedes press closer to the edge, but Amnur pulls him back to a safer distance 40' away.
Assuming Amnur that over 10 rolls you'll succeed at least once, and mathematically you can 50%, so easier to handle it as such.
What's everyone else doing over this minute period?

![]() |

Varian is helping Amnur hold Kalkamedes back from the edge, adding his own strength to that of the dwarf.

Muttering to herself, Shilyn attempts to fashion a harness then stuff the crazy man into it..
"Oh yah.. sure.. now you come along and offer to *poof* him someplace.. how about just giving me a hand getting this silly thing on him?"

![]() |

@Shilyn: You immediately get into a grapple... and secure it pinning him (+5 bonus when you are winning a grapple)! However, Kalkamedes doesn't take your attempts likely and swings at you twice (once for each round).

Shi gets cracked in the face twice, a little blood oozing from her lip as she finally manages to hold Kalkamedes down to strap the harness onto the rope Orion secured.

![]() |

As Shi gets hit Orion leaps over the cavern and proceeds to jump on the somewhat bound sleepwalker.
"You rutting coward hitting a woman like that! I don't care if you are asleep."
Orion would attempt a swing at him if he were able, but I imagine that someone in the group would decipher his intentions by the time he got there and have held him back...

![]() |

Varian puts a hand gently against ORion's chest to hold him back. "We're supposed to follow the sleeper, not awaken him... I'm sure Shilyn is fine... and if not, I will heal her injuries. Be calm, Orion. We still need you across the chasm to collect the sleeper and prevent him from going on without us until we are all across."

![]() |

Letting out more phrases that would make a Cheliax sailor envious, Shilyn wipes the blood from her lip, she somehow manages to fight the urge to draw her dagger and continues to stuff, albeit not gently, Kalk into the harness.
"There, now let's get this guy across before I do something he's going to regret," she says with a bit of venom.

![]() |

Orion thanks Varian for saving him the embarrasment of hitting a sleepwalker and jumps back over, awaiting the cargo. He can point out to anyone how he was able to make the jump (assist) if possible.

![]() |

"If I take my time and a running start, I think I can make it. We can always help Amnur across with the rope and harness like we did for Kalkamedes." Varian winks at Amnur, but his tone of voice was kinda half serious.

"I will help from the other side."
Mahasi gets a determined look on his face. "Irori grant me strength! Nyaaaahh..." he makes a furious run towards the gap and jumps...

... and sails clean over it, overshooting the other ledge and stumbling past Orion. He turns to the others. "I am master of my own will! Now, shall we get the sleeping one across?"
He moves to aid Orion in holding and pulling the load - rather poorly, though.

Shilyn hooks the harness to the rope and carefully climbs out onto it, laying on top of the rope, with her legs hooked over it at her ankles. "Ok.. lower that cretin onto the rope and i'll pull him across," she says with a quick look over her shoulders. She gives a tug on the lead tied to the harness that connects to her sword belt making sure everything is secured..

@Orion: Your first pull is almost enough; Kalkamedes is yanked from the ground across the gap down below and is only a couple of feet from the edge to the other side; one more good pull from the archer is all that is needed to finally secure him from the ledge.
Kalkamedes is now on the other side! Now to get the rest of you.
However, the sleepwalker immediately presses forwards, dragging Orion 10' before he can dig his heels in and stop him!
Everyone give me an Acrobatics check or some other nifty idea to get across.

![]() |

acrobatics: 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 - 2 = 12
Varian attempts to jump across, but does so directly over the rope, so if he falls, he can grab the rope. He takes a good long running start before jumping though.

![]() |

@Mylvwara: Not without using up a significant amount of time. While the gap is narrower here, it doesn't ever "close up", at least within reasonable walking distance. That being said, since nothing is trying to kill you, I'd allow a Take 10 on this; with your natural elven Dexterity and the lack of an armor check penalty, you can easily make the 10' leap :) In fact, thinking back about this, Amnur is the only one in the party I really need to make the check at this point (since Varian and Orion had already crossed).

![]() |

Oh, fair enough then.
Having given it some thought, I hop over the gap and continue after thr group.
As I'm not tugging on any ropes, I try to peer ahead and get a sense of the coming terrain.

Climbing up off the rope, Shilyn mutters as she wanders over to Kalk. "Hrm.. maybe we just leave this harness on him and use it to control him like you would a stubborn mule.. not that there's any resemblance mind you.. purely coincidental, I'm sure."

![]() |

Scouting ahead, the trail returns to forest. However, the trees are somewhat easier to navigate thanks to them being spaced apart more as Kalkamedes' drawn direction heads towards a looming mountain in the distance.
What really catches your attention though, is an unknown voice calling to you. "You know, you're the only person in this lot who seems to honestly care about making sure Kalk's safe. I appreciate that." Your ears can tell that the voice is coming from behind, but close.
I know Amnur's been busy with lots of RL stuff... but time to move on!

"His destiny would take him to the bottom of that cliff, if he didn't have such nice babysitters! He better be a good tipper, that's all I have to say!"
"Thanks for the help Mahasi. Are you curious enough to where this might lead to help out some fellow pathfinders and see this through with us?" As you can tell, we are a little out of our depth here. And the only one of us that is good with ropes here is Shilyn, although she uses them for ... different reasons. The ropes are a little more silky, and ... well, I'll let you imagine it." he says loudly enough for Shilyn to overhear.

![]() |

Mahasi looks a little uncomfortable at the direction the conversation is heading.
"It is... ah... good to practice arts in all their forms, especially those that master the desires of the flesh. But perhaps the personal studies of the chaste and honorable Shilyn are not a proper topic, particularly when we have such an unusual task is at hand. I have been asked to accompany you, and yes I have deemed it worth my time to do so."

Finally continuing!
With the party all secure across the gorge, Mylvwara returns from her scouting to note that the forest continues on, but the walking should be somewhat easier.
The full moon continues to loom overhead and great bands of stars sweep across the cloudless night sky, illuminating a series of game trails that chase through mountain shrubs and berry bushes.

Varian: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
While most of the party is preoccupied one way or another, Shilyn and Varian, once again at the lead with Kalkamedes, spot a different obstacle than they've faced before: a large bear with a pear of cubs are munching one a blackberry bush.
Shilyn and Varian: You two are the only ones who can react before Kalkamedes approach gets the attention of the bear trio. After your actions, I'll mark initiatives and we'll go from there.
Map updated!

Varian will try to slow Kalk long enough to cast Ghost Sound and make a loud sudden noise like crashing through the brush and the howl of a hunting cat like a puma coming toward the trio of bears from the general direction of the party (maybe off a few degrees to one side or another) with the intent of getting the mom (and cubs) to flee rather than stand and fight.

Varian stands ready to make a weapon just in case the Ghost Sound doesn't work to frighten the bears away. not really a readied action, since he already used a standard and we're not exactly in inits yet, but just saying, he's prepared for the ghost sound not to work.
