RE: CURRENT EVENTS
It wasn't my initial idea to have the Kurgan waiting for you, but as any good GM should, I allow the dice to tell the story. Njord's 100 has dire repercussions for not only himself, but also the party.
And yes, I'm ok with offing Njord at this point. It seems the proper time in the story. Besides, there are plenty of other NPC's I enjoy playing, so I'm not too worried about that.
pinvendor |
Very interesting choice...an NPC's agility fumble which should have woken the enemy and perhaps caused injury to himself instead translates into a complete alteration of the story by now making it so that there is no way we can accomplish this mission covertly since "they knew we were coming all along".
I admit I am a tad flabbergasted by this turn of events, and (as a tactical officer) Lucas would realize this situation has just become impossible to resolve and would have to weigh the now -0%- chances of success with the notion that unless at least one of his men returns to Commander Nulner, no one will be aware the enemy already knows of the tunnel.
Lucas' Command check will be to try and assist Lackey and clear the room (I presume much here). However, once it is clear they knew we were coming, Lucas is going to order a retreat down the tunnel and with the intention to rig it with explosives and collapse it. Naturally there will be a rush to inform Commander Nulner since it is likely there is a traitor amidst the surviving force.
From Lucas' perspective, if the horde knows the small squad is coming, success is not possible and they are just throwing their lives away. This is no longer a mission to destroy the Hellcannon, but one to survive the ambush, destroy the tunnel, and begin the investigation to root out whoever betrayed the allies.
GM Drachenfels |
Well, 100's are (as you know) the most horrific events possible. Plus, I'm about to expand on what's happened with a realization that dawns on Lucas. As far as retreat down the tunnel goes, that will be difficult. If you read back in my description vs the squid, the tunnel collapsed behind you when Njord (again rolling badly) was slammed into the wooden beams behind the party and thus caused a collapse. I suppose you can fall back and work at clearing it, so anythings possible.
Either way, I understand your frustration. But the story is far from over. Bad news for the Warriors of Wolfenburg and Lucas? Certainly. But I have faith you'll all find a way to salvage the situation.
GM Drachenfels |
And to continue that line of thought, had the 100 simply been something like Njord tripping and falling into the fire, waking up the entire room, the result in the story would still be the same. You'd have been discovered. I just felt that Njord's time had come. It felt like it was time and a dramatic death due to a 100 is always a good reminder to roll carefully :)
GM Drachenfels |
Ball is back in your court. Lucas can take another action. Still waiting on Albrecht to make himself known. Some options for escape are on the table, though the fate of Lackey hangs in the balance. Still, I have some ideas regarding that as well.
Prepping for my pre-work nap. I will check the updates in a few hours.

Silly, I didn't shoot the canister of gas. I tossed up one the soldiers bombs. Remember all of them are carrying one? Lol. Fortunately, since you're trying to kick the canister out of a soldier's hood, unless Drachenfels is going to be a complete hose beast Albrecht and Lucas shouldn't be anywhere near each other.
Incidentally, heat rises! Make the smoke hot and it goes up. I don't know why you had to be so disagreeable about that... :(
GM Drachenfels |
Ok, a couple things that were totally awesome:
Had a small tentacle handed it to him? Lutke shook his head. No, that's ridiculous.
So great! +10 XP!
Wait! Wind! Heat!
"Albrecht!" Lutke reached out and pulled the mage close and shouted into his ear above the din of the soldiers. "Make heat! Heat the air, Albrecht. Make the smoke rise!"
That's brilliant thinking in a really bad situation. Lutke is wracking up the rewards here with another +10 XP!
"I'VE GOT IT, I'VE GOT IT!!!" A triumphant Boom's voice echoes hollowy from his leather mask as he hold up the spewing canister high above his head.
Haha, it's hard to hate those clumsy Dwarves. Funny stuff! +10 XP! for Krak and Boom.
1d100 ⇒ 99 vs BS (Its sorta like throwing, but like soccer right?)
Oh.... Oh no...
I know it doesn't seem right to reward people xp for rolling fumbles, but that couldn't be funnier to me! +10 XP! for Albrecht. Haha, good stuff.
Lucas can see the few casualties of the two Kurgen who were now blowing kisses at the retreating men and calling what were most likely lewd suggestions in their garish tongue.
^^ And all the rest of that description were simply amazing. I can see the Kurgan in my mind as clear as day. Crazy followers of Slannesh. For that and:
Lucas' voice could be heard yelling, "Lackey! Turtle!"
I salute you. +20 XP! for Lucas.
You guys really outdid yourselves with the updates today.

Pins, baby, I love you, but it seemed like if I started heating up the tower it might get to be an oven and I don't want to be responsible for cooking ourselves. And I'm aware you're shooting a bomb but the bomb is in a towering building we're inside. Jusssayin.
Also, I didn't see the canister hood post till after I had written mine so I was hesitant to take back that sweet sweet 99.
Edit: also, I believe tear gas is fairly heavy and doesn't rise like smoke. If I heated up the air (aside from making it uncomfortable) I think it'd make us lose usable oxygen and be completely filled with gas. But I mean, I'm not a scientist.
GM Drachenfels |
I briefly described in my update with Krak that the roof has been blown clear off, and the entire upper tower is also gone. However, let's also assume some good luck. The collapse has sealed the tunnel behind, hiding the secret passage back. If you want I'll leave that description to you as you rally the troops.
I think you'll also enjoy some of the other posts I just put up ;)
GM Drachenfels |
Need someone to step it up here and make the first post. Get things rolling. The tower is gone, smoke is rising from the crater you created, the enemy is on the way to investigate and the Imperial gunners are targeting your location with heavy artillery! What's not to like about this?! Update update :)
pinvendor |
Okay, I have a post in the works, but I am thinking several things which could affect what I say.
Since I had Lucas have all the soldiers move into the tunnel, sealing the entrance would be bad as only those still in the room would be about to face the music. I am thinking this: Lucas (having remembered the broken wall inside the tunnel) would realize their exposed situation and that surely Imperial and enemy attention will now be heading in our direction. Assuming the way to the blocked tunnel is still available, he would rather retreat into it and take the alternate route where the bog entered. This would allow the Imperial artillery to begin destroying whatever forces the enemy army is deploying to the location without risking any of the party to either.
So is the way open, Sahib?
GM Drachenfels |
You can play it one of a few ways I suppose.
One) The soldiers were preparing to follow your orders and march into the tunnel when you blew the explosive. The tunnel collapsed, maybe killing a Wolfenburg Warrior or two? Maybe some comic relief as someone half buried scrabbles to get free. From there, you have to move quick and find cover before all hell breaks lose.
Two) The tunnel is open, but this means the enemy will likely discover it. There's nothing left of the tower or the secret door that concealed the room you are in. This would change the story into a hold and defend scenario very likely.
Three) Let fate decide. Make a roll and determine if the tunnel is intact or not.
Does this help?
I'll play off whatever you come up with. Many different ways this can go.

Random post regarding why Ghostly Gespana called Lutke "rabbit".
LUTKE: You've never felt such fear in your life. A primal, almost animal like terror overcomes you as you try to put as much space between you and the wretched hag on the hillock. You can feel her gaze burning holes into your back and she snarls, watching her [prey] flee like a pitiful rabbit.
Just wanted you to know, Drachenfels...I pay attention most of the time! Lol.
GM Drachenfels |
Oh, you did reach waaaaay back into the past for that one! Nicely done. I had forgotten that description and didn't make the connection until you pointed it out!
As far as the story, anythings possible I suppose! Things can go any numbers of ways at this point. For example, I had initially foreseen that the infiltration of the tower would have gone very differently. A couple quick and successful agility rolls and the sleeping Kurgan would have all been put to death, and the infiltration of Wolfenburg would begin. Things definitely didn't work out that way.

There you go, Drachenfels. Since we seem to have lost everyone to the weekend void early, I made a post so you can roleplay back to me with Steinman if you wish. Love the Pieter avatar by the way. Totally fitting.
I didn't mention it yet because I wanted to make sure Lucas' attention was on Steinmann initially, but I am going to kill off Sergeant Kakfa. He never got an avatar, so no big loss, lol. He is crushed under the piece of rubble the men are trying to move. Not yet dead, but I figure he will die quickly after they free him (which also clears the tunnel entryway).
Don't forget you can change the name of an alias as long as that alias hasn't posted more than 10 times. (hint, hint) You may want to consider "ephemeral" titles such as military rank may be better suited for the "Race", "Class/Level", and "Gender" fields which can be altered at will and display next to a character's name.
GM Drachenfels |
I searched high and low for a half fitting Avatar for Pieter. It's not perfect, but it works. Glad you like it!
I'll be posting up some responses from Steinmann and working to move the story forward soon. At present I'm preparing for another exciting night at the Den of Slannesh.
And alas, poor Sergeant Kakfa. Some NPC's never make the spotlight, though in the future if you're really fond of one you're more than welcome to Avatar them like I do a lot: Aimes, Steinmann etc.
As far as changing names on Avatars, I leave the old ones intact even if the character is dead or only used briefly. This way anyone reading the story from the start won't get confused. Changing an Avatar late in the story will also change any use of it early on. At least that's my understanding.
And not a bad idea about using the ranks in the race/class/level fields.

Man, First Albrecht, then Lucas, now Brother Pieter (who's now a priest of Sigmar it seems)!? Drachenfels, I REALLY didn't want to play Jurgen but I feel so railroaded. On another note, this week had some of the funniest stuff I've ever read. With all the fumbles going around I'm surprised you guys made it. Good job guys!
P.S. I wonder if Cpl Steinman's going to see any adverse affects later on in life after seeing all his fellow soldiers die face down in the mud. HAHA that pic should have yellow tinted glasses.
GM Drachenfels |
HARLEN: No problem. We'll catch you up to the story when you return and work on your plans then.
STAVO: It makes me happy that you've been reading along with our updates, and I agree there have been some really funny moments. I think one of my favorites is when Lucas described the Slanneshy Kurgan at the top of the ladder cat calling and blowing kisses. That made me chuckle. Or the scene with the Dwarves knocking the canister around shouting "I got it I got it!" haha. Good stuff :)

The discussion thread is not really my cup of tea. I like that you guys are enjoying it as a forum to chat, but I usually dont have much to say about the intricacies of this or that.
Point the direction and I'll make my way.
But I will say this of out following situation:
S#$+!!!!!
I was going to add the gas canister as a fun way of being involved and bringing comedic fun to the scene.(which I think it did), but I really was trying to get it to the second floor. Next time I will actually GET to an opening and toss it through to minimize misses. :)
lesson learned.
Blowing up the tower was BAD!!!
Talking with Gabe on the side, I was hoping we would use it to stage our operation on the hell cannon...using the second floor to assess the area around us.
The situation now calls for SUPER quick action.
You are in the middle of enemy lines.
There has been a HUGE explosion alerting everyone.
(even though we dont know this) our side is going to fire cannons into the explosion.
And now there are Chaos troops advancing.
If I were you, I would get the hell out of there.
I know Gabe will try to give everyone chances, but there's also so much he can do for bad decisions.
I am willing to draw fire and make some noise and give you a chance to escape, but I might change that decision and go after the cannon myself.
I've set things up with my last post. Depending on what the rest of the team does, I will react.
Dagon Waters |
BTW, I have decided that Pvt. Aimes is my favorite Warhammer NPC of all time! :)
Although the path that he is on is truly terrible. I'm sure it will not end well for him. :(
Perhaps, by some stroke of pure luck or chance he will escape his fate and continue his funny demeanor, but probably unlikely :(
GM Drachenfels |
DAGON:
The entire tower scene went a totally different direction than I had planned it. Fumbles have a way of doing that. The canister scene with your Dwarves was probably the funniest thing I've read in a long time. I thought it worked out well regardless of the bad rolls. That's the nature of Warhammer anyhow: Embrace the horror.
Had things gone another way the Kurgan would have been killed in their sleep and as you and I talked about, the tower would have been used as a base of operations to spy on the enemy and prepare for your mission. I even had a fun idea that the tower might have had a small cannon with a stack of cannonballs on the roof that could be used to open fire on enemy positions.
Alas, though, things did not work out that way. Still, I like how the current story is going. And as you say, I'll make things challenging for sure, but I won't drive everyone into a hopeless situation. There will always be chances for victory, despite the overwhelming odds.
And I like Private Aimes a lot too, heh. A big reason why I felt it was ok to let Njord die was the fact that I have some other NPC's kicking around in the story that I enjoy playing. We'll see what happens to Aimes. He's definitely on the wrong path so to speak, but heroes can come from unlikely places as well. The story is writing itself at the moment :)

The destroying the tower was a bad decision? Dagon, I have to point out Drachenfels chose that. I had assumed the thing was little more than a grenade which would not have taken out stone walls but merely assisted in clearing the room above. Drachenfels himself even said he kind of got a little excitable about that description.
We still have a path. I had the same feeling as you do now about us bring trapped in tower with a small entry to floor above being over watched by Kurgan and tear gas filling the room. Drachenfels threw in one of his descriptions that we could enter this side of the city by going back along the tunnel to where the bog octopus broke in which strikes me as a much better idea at this point for all of the reasons you just listed. But you seem to have chosen to ignore that option listed in both the discussion thread and the story thread. *shrugs* That's why no one else seems inclined to join you in what appears to be a suicidal move to "entrench" your characters.
GM Drachenfels |
Yes, I got a bit excited. The grenade turned into a small atomic bomb. I guess they really packed those babies with some serious gunpowder, haha!
But let's not quarrel. The story is moving along fine. I've played off the choices everyone has made and we'll make it into a meaningful and entertaining game.
At this point, need some roleplay/descriptions/decisions from Lucas, Lutke and Albrecht. It appears Lackey is alive and well, so now it's time to get the party moving to relative safety before all hell breaks loose.
In the meantime, the Dwarves will lay down some suppressing fire from their vantage point.
Dagon Waters |
Pivendor....I am going to set aside being "insulted". While you seem to be a person that likes to calculate everything to its most infinite parts....well, I wont go there. You made a mistake..period.
Stay at the tower. I will enjoy seeing your demise through my binoculars. :)
The dwarves are officially freezing their actions until either:
a) They themselves are attack (which is probably what will happen now that I have put a spot light on Pivendor) or...
b) the group gets themselves together and starts to emerge from their death pit. IF that happens, Krak and Boom will begin their rocket assault on the chaos warriors that are heading to the group's positions.
