There. I have set it up for you, Drachenfels. The soldiers are going to make their way along the path under the river. However, I have isolated the player characters of Lucas, Lutke, and Albrecht outside temporarily. If you are wanting to force the party to stay on the foolhardy and suicidal path of the dwarves and Lackey, I am willing to play along. You have the power to now prevent those three from entering the tunnel to continue the mission in secret if you so choose.
Also, I love how Dagon keeps blaming me for Drachefels' over-zealous explosion. Current military tactics suggest throwing a grenade to clear a room is a good idea. How was I supposed to know I tossed in a 7 sticks of dynamite strapped to a pound of C4? Who would have expected that? :P

Never played that campaign myself, but apparently The Enemy Within is still considered one of best written campaigns ever. Makes me want to see if I can eBay it. Think if I recall, BL did a collector's edition of the entire campaign which was updated to 2E when 2E first came out...I was tempted then, but wasn't sure if I would ever be GMing.
Incidentally, I am still somewhat interested in running a PbP at sometime to come which would be about champions of the Old World being charged with following the path Sigmar took when he left the Empire. Remember that? Lol. It was the whole reason I suggested PbP in the first place. :P

GM Drachenfels |

I've run The Enemy Within a few times over the years, or bits and pieces of it at least. You've touched on parts of that campaign with the 'Shadows Over Bogenhaffen' adventure you all played years ago with me, though I don't recall if you had moved to Oregon at that point yet or not.
And I've also done the Path of Sigmar type game before as well. Those are always REALLY fun! I'd be more than happy to play along in a Pinvendor run PBP based on that concept.
As far as our current story, I'm slow but sure making updates here. This is kind of a complex situation so I'm trying to set things up for the way ahead.

pinvendor |

So what are you feeling, GM? Lucas, Lutke, & Albrecht are standing in the wreckage of the tower while the soldiers have now all entered the tunnel. Dwarves on the 2nd floor of a manor some distance away, and Lackey having rolled a "secret" 01 to perceive the two stocky figures is moving to their location. Are you wanting us to begin a certain death flight into the ruined half of Wolfenburg? Or will at least half of the party return to the safer road under the river?

GM Drachenfels |

I'm splitting the group (just made an update). You and your men are now in the tunnel sloshing your way down the path when the barrage begins. I'll start doing updates from two different perspectives, focusing more of my attention on the players who update most.
As far as Albrecht goes, I haven't yet described where he is. I'm waiting for him to weigh in on which road he picked, either tunnel or manor.

pinvendor |

Bah, I was wrong. There was no updated The Enemy Within. I was getting Death on the Reik (one of the modules) confused with a limited edition artbook called Blood on the Reik.
Oh well. Maybe my next eBay quest will be to pick up all the old 1E adventures. Either way, I have been wanting to play Castle Drachenfels. I glanced through the module as written, and while I know the monsters are tough, I was actually disappointed there were not deeper, longer dungeons beneath the castle in the enormous mountain. I keep thinking 0one's Dungeon Under the Mountain would be an awesome addition to that module. Ten levels of pure dungeon madness!! The best part is it's just maps. The GM can fill it with whatever monsters are applicable to their system.
Anyway, hmmm...maybe I will run the "Super Castle Drachefels Plus" edition, mwahaha!
I think a good dungeon crawl where supplies are short and desperation is high might be fun, heh heh.

GM Drachenfels |

You can easily update 1st Edition rules to 2nd edition (as I'm sure you know). The rules really aren't that different. I think I have a full copy of The Enemy Within in my gaming closet. It's a fun adventure for sure, though a bit dated.
As far as Castle Drachenfels goes, I also have a copy of that. I lost it for years and years (turns out Dana had it *shakes fist*), but it's once again in my possession! I ran that campaign once, and we literally played from dusk till dawn. I think we started at 6pm and finished at noon the following day. It was epic and tiring to say the least...
In current events, I really cannot believe the results I just rolled. There are some interesting times ahead for everyone :)

Those cannons are amazing! I love their names. ;-) I also love how you defined how the fumbles were going to play out ahead of time, so no one can say the cannon should have exploded. After all the cannons were "repaired" by our two dwarven engineers. Irony smites the party, lol!
Incidentally, I would like to suggest the cannons shots are independent of the others. In other words the '77' shouldn't change the fumbles.
I have a couple suggestions why a '77' would effect a cannon: maybe a priest of Sigmar (or maybe Grugni?) had managed to complete a blessing on that cannon before the shot, or maybe this was a cannonball magicked by a dwarven Runesmith.

GM Drachenfels |

Agreed on all accounts. I like to setup the terms for major rolls ahead of time to keep things clear and simple. The cannons fire as intended, but two of the shots have gone off their mark. To what location, either tower or the manor home, or both, will be determined soon. And yes, each roll is independent, so the 77 will not augment the fumbles.
Not bad ideas on what the 77 could be used for. I have some ideas myself. Either way, expect serious devastation among the ranks of the Chaos forces.

Clicking the person's name should lead to their profile page will provide a hyperlink just under the their post count and to the immediate right of their avatar to send a private message. Oh yes, this has to be down on their main ID, not an alias.
Incidentally. That Changer of Ways avatar rocks!!

GM Drachenfels |

PINVENDOR: Haha, yea I thought the Changer of the Ways avatar was inspired. Well done on his part! Following your instructions, I'll see about trying to msg him. I might want to see if I can sign on as a player in his game for fun!
ODV: No kidding, right? It's not like you guys have a GM with a doom inspired name or anything? Oh wait--
Also, where are you?! Tower or Manor? ;)
And yes, 3rd Edition is a joke.

pinvendor |

LMAO! Steal that description, Drachenfels!!!
Well, I am sure you won't make it that easy for us, but that's the dream Lutke will have from the dislodged stone that just bonked him the head from the tunnel ceiling. :P
About 3E: I actually like some of the mechanics of 3E. The custom dice really make combat easy, but some of the other props certainly make it seem like a board game. I think it would be fun to use the 3E dice, cards, and tokens for a dungeon crawl where you just go stomping through a monster's lair; but for a serious (or comedic) roleplaying sesssion, I'll take 2E any day of the week.

You may see I have created a couple for you guys. The link to the other game, the one to 0one's DUtm, and also, zombieneighbor's profile for GM Drachenfels.

Whew! Good, he made it. Lucas likes Steinmann. :)
Also, just so you know. If you recall, I had assigned Steinmann the role of medic. The whole reference there is the first "boss" character you encounter in the game Bioshock is named Steinman and is a crazed surgeon. An ode to a video game that I just adored, heh heh.

Re: Private Aimes
I must admit I was uncertain if I wanted to end his life or not at this point in the story, I do like his character a lot, but I also like to demonstrate the unbiased nature of death in the Warhammer world. Just because you've tossed in your lot with powerful people like the Gravin doesn't mean you'll be spared a random death. It seemed fitting, and it buries the idol in the rubble, leaving that entire story line a mystery.
Whatever the case, we have a few other noteworthy NPC's that should be fun to explore, plus I'm sure we'll invent many more interesting characters in the coming days.

pinvendor |

So what, Dagon? You're throwing in the towel?? So randomness got a fate point. It's not like Drachenfels is screwing you over. He did at least give you a chance. I admit I am surprised you don't have fortune points...thought we all got one for surviving that Bog Octopus. Plus GM was handing them out like candy earlier.

GM Drachenfels |

As I explained just now, it really was just randomness. I wasn't out to pick on Dagon or destroy his plans. I rolled a 99 and rolled again and it targeted the Dwarves location. Had I rolled anything but fumbles, the story would be 100% different. Still, I understand the frustration, but that's how things go sometimes. Hang in there :)
And yes, Fortune Points allow for re-rolls. Yes, the 10% chance is pretty low, I know. But given the situation...perhaps a 20% chance would be more fair?

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

What is the point now? Got hit by an arty shell and Gabe said the atomic snotball bombs played a factor plus our own ordinance.
Done deal.
Do you honestly think anything would survive that? Equipment included?
And if I were in that position and somehow miraculously "survived", what would I do? Continue on with what is a horrendous mission to being with with no equipment? F that! I would get the hell out of there and go somewhere to recoop.
