For instance, I had no idea that Lilith was the one who chose the Rod for you, or how thoroughly she had checked sheets, so I was wondering if she had missed it or if backgrounds were more powerful than I had thought from reading over the entry at d20SRD.org.
Similarly, I was not trying to begrudge you a familiar. Essentially I was asking sideways if Parlee could get a familiar at first level as well, since nothing explicit had been said about the deviation from RAW.
I'm in the process of checking the sheets that have been provided right now. Yes, I'm aware that the rod is way over what a 1st level character would have. However, the background provided for Jericho supports the choice - as he left the Anomanexus College rather abruptly taking some things with him (said rod).
As for familiars, in both Jericho's and Parlee's case, since both had an official training before their adventure careers, I would allow your characters to start with a familiar. It's quite plausible that your characters learned how to summon a familiar in your classes, and were required to successfully complete the ritual to pass the class, and the right to call yourself a wizard.
In general (and this is vaguely important), I am willing to let certain portions of the rules slide if a compelling story reason is given. Giving me something to work with to further the story is always a plus in my book, and Jericho's "theft" of the rod will likely come into play, should he be a part of the game. (This also goes for Mercitine's circlet of persuasion - it's a loaner, and there is story reason for it.)

Goody. Now I just have to pick between owl, ferret (weasel), or cat for a familiar.
And I'll butt out of looking at people's char sheets. Jericho was right: I was overstepping my bounds. The whole reason I want to play in this game is because I think Lilith will be a great DM. I should let her. Heck, I'm playing the Elvish equivilent to an 11-year old girl. That's not RaW either.

Jericho Hill wrote:I apologize. I did not intend to chap anything, particularly anyone's buttcheeks, right or left. I was simply curious how certain things came to be. For instance, I had no idea that Lilith was the one who chose the Rod for you, or how thoroughly she had checked sheets, so I was wondering if she had missed it or if backgrounds were more powerful than I had thought from reading over the entry at d20SRD.org.
One of the few things that really chaps my left buttcheek is when other people who are not the DM (who had already okay'd the character), go over my sheet, and start complaining about it.
The rod was what I got for my background. Lilith was the one who put it out there.
Unless I'm mistaken as well, he didn't mean that Lilith had picked out the item, but had "put out" the usage of character backgrounds. However I think this paragraph explains how the "Gear" entry works better (I'd been confused for years until I just read this):
Gear
"This column provides guidance for equipping the character, and it only matters when you've finished creating the character's background. In general, a character spends up to 30% of her wealth on the gear associated with her most recent activity, up to 20% of her wealth on the gear for her second most recent activity, and up to 10% on the gear for her third most recent activity. Background choices made earlier than "third most recent" don't affect the character's equipment. You can spend the character's remaining wealth on anything you choose. "
So basically the Gear entry is for themed item selection when you're creating a higher level character. At first level a "Rod or Staff" at 30% of starting gold doesn't get much :)

Lilith |

Unless I'm mistaken as well, he didn't mean that Lilith had picked out the item, but had "put out" the usage of character backgrounds.
That is what he meant - he was in the chatroom and he rolled up the Academic/Metamagic background. He rolled for it, I picked out said metamagic rod.
Upon the initial reading of the gear section, I missed the part that you pointed out (about the gear being for only above 1st level) and realized it after Stunty rolled up his character. However, I had already stated in my initial writeup that you could get X item if you took a 50% hit to your starting gold. I don't like going back on what I essentially wrote down in stone, so I will stand by my decision (and not be the a***$&& GM and say "I take it back! Nyah-nyah!").
So, in the end, bonus for you guys that choose to take a Character Background. My bad for not reading the rules completely and fully. :P

Lilith |

Mirrana, you need to add the following to your character sheet:
Weapon Group (Basic Weapons)
Weapon Group (Maces and Clubs)
Weapon Group (Slings and Thrown Weapons)
The attack with your sling should be +4 (Dex + racial bonuses).
Disguise skill should be +6 (+8 with tools)
Found that extra skill point - keen. :)

Alright. I'm having a hard time making up my mind, so I'm going to ask the folks in this thread.
First, take a look at the portrait I posted of Parlee. Right now those are tatoos. Would thay make more sense as birthmarks, supporting the 'gifted' angle? Would elves even really be into ritual tatooing?
Second, familiar. I have three candidates. I have listed their merits below. What do people think?
A white owl: Fits the diviner theme. Can be creepy.
A cat: It's the default familiar. Not very elvish, but it seems like the kind of thing a human wizardry school would suggest. Famously nosy and opinionated.
A ferret: The reflex save bonus would prop up the idea that Parlee can see a moment into the future. Has a very hyperactive disposition that could foil well with Parlee's aloofness.

Lilith |

Mercitine, as per JJ's chatroom revelation, Chelaxian = Common. Choose a replacement language.
Add the following to your character sheet:
Weapon Group (Basic Weapons)
Weapon Group (Bows)
Weapon Group (Maces and Clubs)
As a fighter, you get to choose two other Weapon Group feats (in addition to the ones already listed).
Sense Motive should be +7, not +8.

I like birthmarks better.
A white owl
A cat
A cat would be fun - if you've seen the movie Constantine, there's a scene involving a cat that would make this interesting. A white owl is a bit too Harry Potter for me, but a white owl with "burnt" tips on their wings and/or feet would be okay.

I haven't seen Constantine. What happened?
I hadn't even thought HP with the owl. It's mostly because of the big, piercing eyes. And it's what the 3.0 version of Parlee had, but I can't for the life of me remember why.

Abodah looks good to go. Please make a note that you can cast 5 0-lvl spells per day (spell points are for 1st-lvl and above).

"0-level spells cost no spell points to cast. If a spellcaster is capable of casting 0-level spells, he can cast a number of 0-level spells each day equal to three + the number of spell points gained by that class at 1st level." <-- I guess I was adding in the bonus point for a decent wisdom score.
I may continue to tweak Abodah until you actually roll to see who's in. I'm still thinking about traits and stuff. Is being a Shoanti 'distinctive' in Korvosa?

Sollir:
Vander needs the following adjustments:
- Select three languages.
- Choose your two Weapon Groups (you already get Basic Weapons). In order to use your starknife without any penalties, you would need to choose Claw Weapons (for melee) or Thrown Weapons (for ranged).
- Make a notation that you can use 0-lvl spells 3/day.
"Doc"
- Heal is not a class skill for you - please adjust your bonus.
- You have an additional 4 skill points.
- Choose one bonus language.
- Remove Exotic Weapon Proficiency from your feats.
- Choose four Weapon Group feats (you already get Basic Weapons). To use the bladed scarf without any penalties, you would need to take Weapon Group (Exotic Weapons) and Weapon Group (Varisian).
Ashiel
- Sense Motive and Spot are not class skills for you - please adjust your bonuses.
- Choose three Weapon Group feats (you already get Basic Weapons). To use the earth breaker, you need to take either Weapon Group (Maces and Clubs) or Weapon Group (Shoanti).

Alright, I'll make an adjustment later today or tomorrow, thanks for the lookover Lilith!
Doc took Heal as cross-class and has a Healer's Kit to boost it up by +2 more, so I think the bonus is correct (4 cross class ranks for 2 + 3 from wis +2 from kit = +7)
Ashiel's Sense Motive/Spot class skills come from his background trait. Is there a better place to put that information, perhaps?
And I guess I missed the weapon groups alternate rule, oops! It's easy for Ashiel but it'll take me a bit to figure out what's best for Doc.

Ranged dagger +4 (1d4+3/19-20) or club +4 (1d6+3)

TACTICS
Before Combat Rheed likes to study his opponents to gauge their strength when possible. He's a tactician with a keen eye for forming the most brutally effective strategy possible. Before closing with an opponent, he may hurl a dagger or club if he thinks it will wear them down...but only if he's confident he can retrieve the thrown weapon once it's left his hand.
During Combat Rheed usually fights with two weapons against lightly armored foes, preferring to strike more frequently and tire out opponents before finishing them. Against those in heavy armor, however, he primarily attacks with just his longsword and uses his second weapon for defense. On a cooperative level, Rheed is also well-versed in street-fighting and recognizes the importance of outflanking opponents and cutting off their retreat. He looks for such opportunities throughout a battle, making sure to support his friends and decisively win the fight.
Morale Rheed prefers to live to fight another day when things turn sour, but he also feels a great responsibility for his comrades. Loyal allies don't come all that easily in life, so he won't abandon a friend unless they've proven themselves untrustworthy in the past.

BACKGROUND
Rheed Sepris resulted from an ill-conceived dalliance between the son of a Chelaxian noble and a Shoanti servant girl. Once the truth of his mother's pregnancy became known, his father's family quietly sent her away, unwilling to acknowledge a bastard heir of such lowly origin. She gave birth to him among the semi-permanent homes of the Shingles as part of a transient group who worked as manual laborers for the Sailmakers Guild. Rheed toiled alongside her until age 13. At that time, his mother passed away and he promised her he would find a better life for himself. But none of the laborers were willing to take him in and few craftsmen had need of such a young apprentice.
Soon thereafter, Rheed took to the streets, joining several gangs over the years just to survive. In time, he distinguished himself as a capable street-fighter and an imaginative planner. This allowed his gang to persevere against competitors, upstarts, and even the crackdowns instituted by the Korvosan Guard. The latter group actually inspired Rheed, as he came to view the disciplined training of the guardsmen as something to emulate in his own band of misfits. After borrowing their tactics to add structure to the gang, his further successes came to the attention of the city's truest crimelords -- the Cerulean Society.
An agent of the city's theives' guild approached Rheed, tasked with culling the most promising members of Korvosa's street gangs and pressing them into service -- while quietly eliminating any who refused. Outmatched and recognizing an opportunity to become part of something bigger, Rheed encouraged most of his gang to merge into the larger organization. He avoided becoming a pickpocket or second-story footpad, focusing instead on serving his masters with his swordarm. Even then, he often felt uncomfortable with assignments that seemed unjust or outright evil in their purpose.
Years later, Rheed continues to act as a mercenary enforcer and urban bounty hunter against those who cross the Cerulean Society. Though he obviously ignores and acts against many of the city's laws, Rheed has always lived by his own code of honor. Random murder and mayhem disgusts him. And he bears no ill will towards anyone marked by his masters. To Rheed, his activities are more about survival, building alliances, maintaining structure, disciplining those that get out of line, and managing the resources entrusted to him.
One bit from Rheed's past continues to haunt him, however. Some members of his original gang chose not to join the Cerulean Society. He has quietly protected them over the years by shielding their identities and passing along information to ensure they stay out of Cerulean affairs. One of his best friends from that group, a former girlfriend named Hana, fell into an association with Gaedren Lamm. Unsure of Lamm's status in relation to the Cerulean Society, Rheed has kept out of the man's affairs, while quietly worrying over the drug habit soon picked up by Hana. Three weeks ago, she nearly died in a local brothel from an overdose of shiver. Rheed knows Gaedren is the one who hooked her. And now, he intends to repay him, even if it goes against his Cerulean masters' wishes.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION & PERSONALITY
Rheed stands 5-feet, 10-inches tall and weighs 175 lbs. The rigors of surviving on the streets often makes him seem older than his 23 years would indicate. He has brown eyes and dark brown shoulder-length hair with a few day's growth of like-colored beard. A distinctive scar, the remnants of an old street fight, mars the left side of his neck. The wound also took a small piece of his ear.
Rheed adjusts his demeanor to suit any given situation, but strives to present an air of confidence at all times, knowing full-well that any hint of weakness or uncertainty can spell doom on the streets. In private, he is less guarded to his long-time friends, occasionally questioning his purpose in life and yearning for something better than the hand fate saw fit to deal him. He rarely seeks to provoke violence, but has no problems welcoming it when it comes his way. He hopes someday to escape the Cerulean Society and make a more peaceful life for himself.

Ok, I finally rolled up and wrote some background for a character.
So here's Dunzeltof Haelcannon, a dwarven cleric of Shelyn.
here's the rolls I used for him
Any suggestions, Lilith?

Alex Martin |

Hey Lilith,
Been so bogged down with RL stuff that I haven't had much time at character creation at this point. Since it looks like you have a full slate of folks who are ready to go and the new PF is almost upon us, I'm gonna bow out for now. I'll probably finish my character when I can; maybe see if someone else runs a CoTCT Pbp - but didn't think it was fair to be in the drawing this late in the thread.
If there's still room in another week or so, perhaps I can throw my hat in the ring. Otherwise, best of luck to you and also your victims...err players. ;-)

Lilith |

Eric Zylstra, the following adjustments need to be made for Bastian Venn:
- A +2 circumstance bonus on Disable Device, bringing your bonus to +7.
- A +2 circumstance bonus on Open Locks, bringing your bonus to +8.
- Include the following Weapon Group feats on your sheet: Basic, Varisian, Exotic Weapons.
Other than that, your character passes muster. Update your alias appropriately!

Lilith |

NSpicer, the following adjustments need to be made for Rheed Sepris:
- Remove Two-Weapon Defense from your list of feats. A thug does not get the fighter bonus feat at first level like a normal fighter does. Your AC goes down to 17, and your flat-footed AC goes down to 14.
- Increase Reflex saving throw by +1 (from City Born [Korvosa]).
- Increase Intimidate to +6 (as City Born [Korvosa] gives you a bonus).
Make those corrections and you should be good to go.

Eric Zylstra, the following adjustments need to be made for Bastian Venn:....

Thanks! Done, and converted to the preferred Pathfinder format.
The update includes two minor equipment changes: I added another dagger and the correct weight for the reinforced scarf.
