APPEARANCE

Black-haired and skinny, with his nose crooked left from an old fight, Bastian is a slightly cleaner, slightly drabber version of the typical Varisian street rat. He wears cheap-looking brown leathers with a faded red, patchwork scarf.

BACKGROUND

Spoiler:

Bastian’ mother was a Varisian streetwalker who died just after his birth, leaving him in the care of Tobias Venn, a priest of Erastil who ran the local orphanage. Sadly, Bastian didn’t inherit enough of his mother’s good looks to attract the notice of a foster parent. He grew up on the streets of Old Korvosa, drifting in and out of trouble, slowly moving toward a short, nasty life as a two-copper Sczarni thug. Tobias tried to pull him back from the criminal life, but without much success until a nasty bar fight left Bastian nearly dead. Since then, Bastian has stayed clear of the Sczarni and clear of crime (well, mostly). He works as a finder, a job that usually involves tracking down runaways, shadowing unfaithful husbands, and recovering stolen items too small to merit the court fees. He’s registered as a small-time operator with the Cerulean Society because sometimes “recovering” is a euphemism for “stealing it back.”

Although he left the orphanage a long time ago, Bastian still feels a bond to the children there, particularly to the Varisians, who have more trouble finding homes. He has tried to help Tobias provide for their needs and to keep them out of trouble; he’s had a long, bitter history with Gaedren Lamm. At least one of his childhood friends now works for Lamm, but the most recent outrage was the disappearance of Zenovia, a half-Varisian girl with early signs of magical talent. Tobias and Bastian had almost arranged for her adoption by a Varisian sorcerer when Zenovia vanished on the way back from the marketplace. Bastian knows it was Lamm; he just needs to find Zenovia and enough proof for the arbiters to give Gaedren a hemp necklace. One way or another, this time Lamm is going to pay.
