@GM: Ahhhh, there we go. A good sense of current events always helps when inserting a character into the moment. Much appreciated.

Yeah, the conserving, called and returning special abilities all come with serious caveats, all of which make the archetype a bit stifling. It's kind of frustrating, given how important it is for a card caster to actually throw HARROW cards, which are a bit less replaceable than a regular card. Doubly so for the Harrower prestige class I'd like to aim for.

Would it be more reasonable to aim for some form of custom enchantment after the game begins, say by talking to our Dwarven crafter friend and paying the requisite costs and time requirements? I'm totally up for playing it out and making it part of the fun on the side.

In regard to the archetypes, the level 3 arcana is the only arguable sticking point, since the card caster replaces the level 3 and the other adds new optional arcana choices; the dancer doesn't actually REPLACE anything or take it away. The card caster limits arcane pool enhancements to ranged weapons(which I can only assume they MEAN to include throwing weapons which are the entire point of the archetype) but the pool is otherwise unaffected.

My thinking is that it seems okay because nothing is taken away by both classes, but your ruling's the one that matters.

Could the same effect be garnered by just flavoring spell effects as cards? Magic Missile being several energy infused cards? Scorching Ray being a card of fire? A shield buff being turning over a Shield Card?

Hmmm...not exactly I think. This is actually treating the card as a thrown weapon, dealing damage and specifically tacking a touch spell onto it. It also interacts directly with throwing Harrow cards specifically, as does the Harrower prestige class.

Nothing says I can't describe my other spells that way, though, which now that you mention it, I think I shall...

Hmmm, maybe I should just say "screw it" and buy an extra deck...or two. I'm sure we can find crafters to produce more; I don't think the Harrow deck itself is magical...

I've been doing a little revising to make the build a little less clunky since it seems really action-heavy; I don't like to be a spotlight hog (not often, anyway) and the Harrow means I'll already have some extra dice rolls filling up my posts...

They REALLY needed to do a design pass on this archetype to make it less tricky and more functional. For something that should be so simple, it's really technical, I'm realizing...here's hoping Pathfinder 2 makes it a little more intuitive!

Major purchases and spells known done and ready for inspection. Still working on it, but profile is mostly complete. Linking everything is adding a lot of time onto generation, but it sure is nice!

Liberty's Edge

One last thing I need to make sure of, GM: do you have a preference for profile formatting/statblocks/character sheets? I've taken quite a liking to Myth-weavers.com but I know it doesn't have infinite room for ability descriptions and isn't exactly the statblock you'll see in the books...

Finishing touches to be made, pending some rulings and alias formatting upon request, I present for your reading pleasure...

So HOW did I get the job again?:
The call to settle in the Stolen lands was news that reached Lucinda later than most in Brevoy; she was traveling home to Issia after multi-year stay in Varisia and received the news by passing messenger. Talk of looming civil war and the commission for adventurers to make the stolen lands safe for settling piqued her curiosity. Upon her arrival she found a very different place than she remembered; there was a nervous tension to the populace that permeated the air. Inquiries into the matter told her that great strides had already been made towards pacifying the region, yet talk of doom and bloodshed were commonplace like never before. Knowing that most people who'd remember her were long gone thanks to their short lives, she decided to travel southward to Rostland and investigate further.

Word there confirmed what she'd heard: there was talk of new settling, trading and construction in the Stolen lands. It sounded as if official support was on offer to those who could successfully raise and defend holdings on the frontier. The political move made sense; the more she thought about it, the more brilliant it sounded. Though she'd taken charge of an adventuring party or two in her travels, she'd never raised a hold before; she certainly couldn't build a keep herself...but she did know how to motivate people and she knew a thing or two about a thing or three. Convincing the Swordlords to support her seemed a tall order in her mind. Yet in the idea she saw the potential to realize so many ambitions in one move. The notion was daunting, yet thrilling all at once. Unsure of what to do, she read the Harrow. When it was over, she scooped up her cards with a mischievous grin and set off to secure an audience.

LATER...

Lucinda had to fight with every ounce of willpower to keep from bursting into laughter at the Swordlord's slack-jawed, brow-cocked face. Pure incredulity was plain on his features, yet she held her composure. Once he cleared his throat to speak, the amusement subsided.

"Let me make sure I understand this. You are an Elf from Issia. You believe your father is an exile from your own lands, you have no skill with a sword Or a bow, no experience managing any sort of holding, and no allies to support your endeavor; you openly admit to practicing thievery and..." he waved a hand at her exotic appearance "other less than appropriate skills, you claim that a deck of cards foretold your success..." he leaned forward, holding his forehead. "And you want Rostland's support?"

Lucinda bowed her head slightly, smiling in agreement. "Not a detail missed, milord."

The man exhaled and slumped back in his high backed chair. "Alright, why not? I've entertained wilder claims. Convince me you're worth it. Why should I endorse this? What will you contribute?" He laced his fingers across his stomach, expression neutral again.

Lucinda let her eyes wander in thought for a moment before answering. "In a word? Commerce." The word solicited a raised brow. Lucinda grinned, accepting the unspoken challenge. Reaching up to her neck, she whisked her scarf from her shoulders, twisting on one foot into a spiraling twirl. As the spun completely around, the scarf wrapped around her neck, revealing the handful of Harrow cards now between her fingers. "Civil wars are messy, expensive and oh-so depressing. People need distractions. Distractions are worth coin." flashing a hand over the cards, she flipped them out of sight. "I can be very distracting. I know how to attract others who can be distracting." With her now hidden hand, she produced a gold coin from her clothes, rolling it between her knuckles and flipping it into the air. "My hold will be a center of art, performances, trade and exotic culture. It will draw visitors, both from Rostland and Issia. ESPECIALLY from Issia. Soldiers, merchants, and anyone else who craves a reprieve from the tension in the air..." she whisked her scarf around again; the coin vanished. She flashed a knowing smile.
"and the air in Brevoy is quite tense, wouldn't you say?"

Glancing into the lord's eyes again told her she had his full attention. She began to sway subtly, incorporating simple hip movements into her speech. "When people learn an elf has raised a "house of pleasures" for Rostland, there will be questions. They'll come to see for themselves. I'll gather information from their inquiries...and their spending," she winked. "In return for your support, I can provide you with extra gold for the city's coffers and potentially vital information." As her dance turned, she called on the magic in her sleeves, swiftly transforming her fortune teller's garb for a practical garment far more Issian in fashion. Once complete, she stopped, stood at ease and steepled her fingers, secretly relishing the widened eyes of her interviewer. "I could create trade routes as far as Varisia; I know for a fact there are merchants who would love to sell their exotic wares so far away and I honestly believe Brevoy would enjoy some new culture. Of course I'll maintain a standing force of guardsmen to protect my holdings and any Rostland agents will have shelter and support within my walls, should war truly come." Seeing her would-be patron giving the idea serious thought, she clasped her hands behind her back. "As a final benefit...if my Issian heritage starts to cause more trouble than it's worth, you can simply "expose" me as an Issian spy. I can scurry away with whatever profits I've built, leave some convenient "evidence" to support your accusation and disappear. Your people will laud you for exposing and driving out a traitor, I'll be off with a small fortune on my hands and you'll have a well established, lordless hold full of trade and entertainment to give to whomever you see fit."

Lucinda could see the ideas dancing in the Swordlord's head; he was a politician and she knew he could see the strategic potential in her proposition. Now was the time to make her move. She calmly stepped up to his table, placed both her hands on the surface and looked him straight in the eye. "Even if I lose...you win. What say you?"

Stroking his chin, the intrigued man finally decided to sit up in his chair again, putting his hands together. "you DO know that there is still no shortage of danger in the Stolen lands? Just how do you plan to defend yourself out there?"

Lucinda's face broke into an almost predatory grin. She stepped away from the table, reverting her clothes to her normal garb. In a single motion she whipped her scarf from her neck to a fruit bowl she'd spotted on entering. With the proper yank, the hidden razors on the underside snatched up an unattended apple, flinging it into the air. With another snap of the scraf, she sliced it in half, catching both pieces. She then tossed both pieces into the air, lining them up with the two empty chairs at the Swordlord's flanks; snapping her fingers she produced two playing cards from her sash, charged them with crackling arcane energy and flung them right through the divided apple, pinning both halves to the chairs. Her face remained expressionless, but inside she was screaming with delight. Gods I actually DID IT! YES! If that's not a sign I don't know WHAT is!

The noble's expression, on the other hand, was clearly of shock. A nervous glance at the chairs, the cards and the apples, now bleeding juice down the polished wood, was apparently enough to sway his mind, for he cleared his throat and pushed himself to his feet. "Well...I suppose I could make some arrangements..."

If you look at my Alias for Argor Constantine, that is the basic format I prefer.

I'll have to see about finding a template to copypasta to get things ported over with a minimum of fuss. Otherwise, all I've got left is finalizing my equipment choices. There's a link to the mythweavers profile with all the pertinent points so feel free to inspect; if something's off or needs adjustment/clarification, by all means say so. I've tried to make sure my shorthand is still easy to understand.

My main interest in choosing my players is less the mechanics being perfect at creation and more on interesting story and a strong history of posting and reliability in sticking with it. For those of you who have PBP history on other boards, links to your games there for reference would be helpful.

On that note, a general reminder: Recruitment closes at 8:00 AM EST on June 26th!

Other games? Here are a few that are still semi-active:

3.5 Character name Raerali, elf mage working toward Ultimate Magus

1st edition: Fire Giants: Characters: Roaky (Cleric) and Faffle (Wizard)

Pathfinder Emerald Spire: Character: I took over Anoush. Human Cleric.

Pathfinder Gauntlet. I am AGM Lemming. This is a dungeon crawl, but only two active characters are left.

And a couple on this board: (These were migrated from that other board)

Francis Thrannel, Cleric

3.5 Morrow Tue, Duskblade/Abjurant Champion

Pathfinder Shaman, Llennawar Stonecutter This one is over but GM West has indicated that he might port the active characters over to a new game if he can get interest. ??

Here is a bit of backstory to Zorin. I may fiddle with it a bit as the day goes on but he is ready to be submitted. His stats are all on the profile. I'll link a couple of games I was in tonight.

Fluff:
orins status as a half elf helped to cement his interest into biology. How could two different species mates? Why did he gain some traits but not others from each? Why could elves and humans have children but now dwarves and humans? These questions helped pushed him into the field of medicine. Sadly, he quickly fell prey to his own thirst for knowledge. Healing and Hippocratic oath quickly became second to his need to understand. When the university learned of his unorthodox experimentation and vivisection of the test animals he was quickly kicked out and banned from practicing medicine in Restov. Luckily for him, there were always those willing to pay for medicine under the table. Adventures were one such group of people. He was soon heading into the wilderness as a healer for hire, using the funds to support his experiments into biology. He soon became well known to others like him who were shunned by traditional medicine. Others simply valued knowledge's above all else, and others simply recognized a chance for profit when they saw it. He soon found himself in the center of a group of people running small errands, selling the products he discovered, and helping to acquire rare and sometimes illegal test subjects. He named this group Bleeding Edge. He lived like that for many years until the call came out for those willing to head into the stolen lands. After consulting with his team, they decided this was the big break they needed to truly cement themselves in the world. After packing up, his guild began the journey into the stolen lands.

Zorin himself has butchered himself in an exploration of the physical form. A large metal screw implanted through his skull is his most striking feature. It was done in an attempt to better preserve his brain from any critical attacks. His hair has long since been bleached white thanks to the various chemicals he works with. A large pair of wings juts from his back, a combination of insectoid and draconic flesh stitched together to offer him limited flight. A third arm juts out from below his left arm, grown during one of his first experiments. On his other side a large tumor is visible when he dressed lightly. Often it detaches from his flesh to form into a fleshy scorpion. He often refers to the creature as Vlad.

Zorin is often found wearing a heavily modified surgical coat, holes made for his extra arms and wings. Blood stains and chemical burns mar the white cloth, showing signs of repeated cleanings. Its pockets contain a variety of drugs, poisons, potions, extracts and other useful alchemical tools. He has sewn a bag of holding into one of the inner pockets to allow for ease of use. He is nearly always seen smoking, the tobacco often spiked with poison in an attempt to better immunize him.

Goals:

Development of a guild hall from which he can publish his and his guilds research and spread them to a national level.

Implementation of a series of stores he will be able to sell his products from to better fund his operation.

The construction of a secret lab where he and his fellow members can experiment and test various fields of research.

Finally, to educate and bring up the average person. In his mind, the best way to support development is to make sure as many people can peruse knowledge. To this end, his guild will look to fund schools, education programs, and other civic programs.

People close to him:

Etna Velkin: Etna is a human rogue who was Zorin's first client after a theft went bad. He had often dealt with her when he needed to acquire a drug or odd illegal ingredient. After his expulsion she had come to him after being stabbed by a city guard during a failed job. It was thanks to her that he had first realized that there was a demand for health care to those who did not want to go to a proper healer. Since than they had become partners in the business. Whenever something needed to be hushed up or evidence needed to be destroyed he could always count on her to back him up. There was a slight on again off again romance to the two, but his love for alchemy always seemed to trump any romantic affair the two would begin to cultivate.

Dr. Lavarn Trullbic was one of Zorin's teacher. He was a harsh man who beloved that traditionalism and proper respect for authority was the best way to conduct a hospital. If it worked, why bother to change it? This infuriated Zorin who's studies and research ideas were often shut down and brow beat by him. It was Lavarn who instigated his expulsion. Imagine Zorin's surprise when the man presented one of his own alchemical remedies for gout as his own. It was thanks to that doctor that no other university would allow Zorin in and his reputation was dragged through the mud. To this day he never misses a chance in the medical community to bad mouth his former student.

Those games I linked all moved very slow. I'm hoping this one is much faster! PBP is slow, but if everybody posts at least once a day that would be nice!

Thron I have a quick question to. Strictly speaking the only pain killer in pathfinder is a pharmaceutical from the tech guide. Could he devise some sort of poison or drug to use during surgery?

Also here are a few examples of my past playing experience.

Guild masters was a fun game I got really into that the dm sorta just puttered out for some reason.

This was a very fun one. A space game before starfinder really kicked off.

Here is a example of when I was in a society game and my post rate.

I've been on this board for years now. My Hell's Rebels game is probably my best that I'm most proud of.

Most of my character from that board are no longer active, but the dungeon Selann is running has one of my more amusing character in it. Torin Brimfisher. Most of my oldest characters in there have become inactive after... gosh more than six years now.

My second, and the one I find most challenging to play is Norian Abronze mostly due to his conflicted nature. Wants to be a tailor, but his talents lie in serving as magical artillery.

About the only compliment I get is how neat the characters I come up with. Between my pirate barbarian, sorcerer tailor, type A knight, hexblade twin to a favored soul, Orvos 1.0, and Quinn 1.0!

1.0 in class and name... nothing like this character.

Hell's Rebels? I am so jealous. I want into a campaign of that in the worst way.

Excuse me while I go back and read some of Norian's original campaign. It was the start of a running theme where he or his monk companion would almost die.

Lantern Lodge

I would definitely be interested in playing. I would probably play as Malthius Lebeda. He is a LN human wizard/Bloat Mage.

A member of House Lebeda, he used his family's means to dig up arcane knowledge around the world. While dabbling with some arcane rituals, he accidentally caused himself to become a bloat mage. Rather than trying to reverse his new affliction, he found the power it gave him to be too tempting to turn down. His family was scandalized and exiled him.

At this point he's probably gone to the Stolen Lands to prove himself. His wife and children have also gone with him.

His policies within his territory would heavily lean towards education, magical training, and healing arts. Any and all would be welcome as long as they are willing to follow the laws and aren't destructive.

Ruins of Arcadia -Probably one of my prouder games, as the Forgemaster Maven Brewbane, which came to an abrupt end.

Wiscrani Tales -A Council of Thieves game that, sadly, lost it's GM. It was a bit...wordy, now that I look back, but there was lots of good plotmeat and interaction, I feel. I was also quite proud of my character, Maxis Molderbin, being a set of ability rolls that included THREE -2's. Still sad I didn't get to play it very long.

War of Honor Ah, this one...another of my favorites, this one was a Jade Regent campaign with a twist I didn't expect (but in retrospect, I can just imagine the DM smiling at how easy I made it for him.) This one...actually ended because of me. I was distinctly enjoying playing as Mai Seori (family name first, then given name.) Life was being unkind and I had to make sacrifices. I still hated the choice I had to make.

Thankfully that hurdle in my life is over. Hopefully the world will not be so unkind again.

Added reference pic to profile, forgot to do that Friday.

The good doctor.

Just remember he has a pair of wings and a third arm as well. He will only grow stranger looking as the story progresses as well. Discoveries are amazing.

I kept working at it when I could. Still need to do a bit of shopping, but other than that everything is done. Tried to finish completely before deadline but am very tired.

RECRUITMENT IS OFFICIALLY CLOSED!

I will review the submissions and get a player list up as soon as possible. I will say however that I woke up wi a migraine and also have a significant chores list today, so it may be tomorrow or later before the official choices are made.

Okay, obviously by the previous post the migraine was quite significant, and isn't entirely gone away. But between its worst moments and my chores, I've reviewed the submissions and hopefully have made the best selections for the game. Those of you who didn't make the INITIAL cut, do not feel slighted. There were several submissions who were close.

Ultimately, I have chosen the following characters for the game:

Govannon Gittins
Lucius Pence
Galendir d'Arden
Flaith Menan

To you four, congratulations and please check in to the Discussion Thread for further information.

To the rest of you, I wish you the best of luck in your future campaigning, and hope to see you around the boards on another pass!

Many thanks!
