Thank you for clarifying

Seth86 you have not actually mentioned which edition you'd prefer. Any preference?

EVERYONE, I am currently tracking votes for HERE. If someone says they are open to either, I am casting half a vote in each edition.

1st Edition: 6.5 votes
2nd Edition: 4.5 votes

0.5/0.5 then :)

So non-paladin LG copper (race yet to be decided)

I would be interested in a 1E game.

1E (or Pulp Cthulhu)

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

You’re looking for Pulp, not Steam, right?

My vote would be a full vote for 2E
My character can be a Prohibition Agent who gave away booze at a brothel.
(he'll be out of business after 1933)

Having played a load of CoC and other such Horrow games and in a H&M one one here, very much interested. I am also running a DUNE game E1 here if you would like some advice on the low to no magic level of things.

E1: Pulp 1930s Gum Shoe sounds fun.

First Edition is my go-to, so I'd vote for that.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. As it stands, 1st edition currently has 11 votes and 2nd edition has 6 votes. I am heading into work now, and will likely give until the night to gather anymore feedback/votes.

To the couple comments/questions:

Zahir I am not sure what you mean by "Pulp, not Steam?"

GM_Panic this won't be "low/no magic" per say. While magic will not be a part of "normal society", it will exist and the players will be aware of that (and some may be able to wield it).

Dark Archive

I'd probably roll up a museum curator/librarian occultist if we went 1e.

Cool, Lovecraft for all he odd views on things, like magic in the old world way of Grimoires etc.

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

Well, I recognize that Pulp is a very different genre than Steam Punk, but I wanted to make sure we're talking straight Pulp here.

I could actually go with either. I'm definitely more comfortable with 1E than I am with 2E, but I've got no issues with playing either.

I was in a game several years ago that was part of "our world" set in "Merrie Olde England". It was pretty fun. Pretty cool to run pc's in the real world. The guy I ran was a Brawler.

Thinking a Fighter (Steelbound/Trench Fighter) could be fun: a WWI vet who knows his way around a gun, but also carries his family’s ancestral sword (which will turn out to be a legendary weapon like Excalibur, Joyeuse, Gram, Crocea Mors, etc; maybe it was even known by several of those names over the years). Maybe throw in VMC Paladin or something to give him a little extra spice, since Fighters have plenty of feats to burn.

Grand Lodge

Ie I think a Questioner Investigator or a Sacred tome Inquisator would be interesting.

With the better part of 3 days to collect feedback on the topic of 1st edition vs 2nd edition, the growing divide has become increasingly clear:

1st Edition: 12.5 votes
2nd Edition: 6.5 votes

At this time, I will be closing the debate on edition, as 1st has claimed the prize. Over the next few days I will get the recruitment thread set up and posted. I look forward to seeing you all on there.

Zahir (Pulp vs Steam?):

My apologies. I have never heard it referred to as just Steam, nor had I brought up Steampunk in any form (nor does it make sense in the 1930s), so I hope you can understand my confusion. In general, Steampunk is typified as an pre- or early-industrial setting where "steam tech" allows access to more advanced technology through the wonders of invention. Then 1930s is already well into the industrial age, complete with factories, metal warships, airplanes, electricity, telephones, and much more.

As for "Straight Pulp", I am once again not sure what you are looking for. Pulp magazines were a broad literary group that lasted from the 1890s until the 1950s, coming on the heels of the Penny Dreadfuls before them. They were fast paced action stories with exotic locations, exaggerated characters, and more than a few stereotypes. Within that framework there were stories of all types: medieval fantasy, swashbuckling pirates, western, investigation, police/mystery, sci-fi, adventure, military, and much more.

I did reference influences like Indiana Jones, the Mummy, and Hellboy, saying it will be a 1930s Pulp adventure with fantasy and horror influences. I am hoping this clarifies what I will be offering?

I would have applied regardless of edition, but I am definitely happy it's in 1st edition (still not 100% familiar with 2e). I sent you a PM with a couple questions, let me know your thoughts.

Grand Lodge

it would be Desiel or Deco Punk, maybe Tesla Punk

I know what you are actually referring to with "Tesla Punk", but in current day, that could mean a whole other genre!

I’ve also heard “Dieselpunk” used for the post-steam punk era, roughly WWI-post WWII (and the development of nuclear, I guess). But whatever you call it, I think we get the general drift.

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

I’m all good. I speak “Pulp,” for sure. Read my share of them, watched them, even listened to old radio versions. My query was more that “Pulp” and “Fantasy with Magic” don’t mesh completely in my brain, and I was trying to make sense of that. Whereas Steampunk and magic work fine in my brain.

Anyways, consider me the blind man, trying to understand this “rainbow” you speak of. I’ll need to take it on faith, and I’ll watch for the recruitment.

Tesla punk is the 1900s begin with Tesla Coils, Eletric Ray Guns, Electric pacs, think Nicola Tesla Inventions along side Art Dexo.

Disel Punk is full world war 1 and 2 vibes. Heavy greasy machines, oil and gasoline are life blood in the hellish wartorn land scape think Rebels v. Empire of star wars tech yet co gined to a WW2 asethtic.

Deco Punk is the Roaring 20s art style. Similar to Batman The Animated Series style Deco and Tech

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and happy Monday. As I continue to work on the recruitment thread, I thought I would take a few minutes to respond to a few PMS publicly, as well as address some of these questions about tech level.

Setting: real world 1930s - in most ways, this game will be set in the world as it was. 99.9% of people go about life as normal, with know knowledge of magic, monsters, demons, or their like. The game will not have dwarves barkeeps or elves running wizardly schools.

Historical accuracy: On the other hand, once gameplay starts, this will be an "alternate timeline" to history. Do not expect things to happen exactly as they did. And though historical figures may be used, they may be altered and/or in wholy different places that do not align with history. Your characters will visit real places, though it is unlikely I will have period accurate maps of streets, buildings, and their like.

Technology level: the game will primarily use the appropriate tech levels of the 1930s. If you encounter a mad scientist, they may have unique creations, but these will most certainly not be the norm. You will not see soldiers running around with laser guns.

Gender, ethnicity, and related concerns: I want people to be able to play the characters they desire, and the societal restrictions of the past will not be a constraint on the players. During gameplay at some point it is possible the party will encounter bigotry, but the offender will definitely fall into the villainous category. I am happy to speak 1-on-1 with each player and ensure an inclusive and enjoyable role-playing experience.

yosh, revolvers :P and maybe shotguns :P

You Might light Helena, A German who fled post war germany to the USA.
She will need some tweaking but I think she is sound

Re Magic and the real world, are you imagining something like The Dresden Files or the Alex Versus novels where magic 100% exists but most people are unaware of it and some agency tries to cover it up?

My immediate though was "Bright"

Silas I have read neither series, but just did a bit of google research, and I would say closer to the Dresden Files, but with less of the "large supernatural factions" as powers behind everything.

Grand Lodge

I might tweak an old character for this setting... A Voodoo Priestess from liousiana

GM Panic here,
Helena is a Rogue/spy, why? because she errr... Picours things for the university of new york, with ways and means other may less use so to say.
Wink wink say no more.

As a German Jew escaping a more and more hostel germany she moved to NYC and works there now, as an information broker, {she has a small book shop in the west side} and dose odd jobs for the Ancacy when needed.

She is also level 3, but that was the starting point for ast game.
She can be changed with ease.

IMAGE HERE = Helena Conradina Von Der Ahe
She is 50 year old and not a lot shocks her now.

:)

Not a lot yet, BUUUT

Here's my budding idea

Alice Pinkerton of the Pinkerton Investigation Agency

Steel Hound Investigator

Weapon of choice: shotgun

Her great grandfather founded the agency in 1850

She's the youngest of 5 children. Also the only daughter. Also the only one who followed the family business

FWIW Pinkerton already had its own London operation by this point, launched by Harry Smale, the founder of the Association of British Investigators trade group (still around!).

Question on races -- though there are no actual Dwarves tending bar or whatnot, would races be allowed from a mechanical perspective? (Chiefly concerned about favored class bonuses, racial traits and so on.) For in-campaign purposes, that bartender isn't a Dwarf, he's just a stocky guy with a remarkable resistance to alcohol poisoning.

Interesting. So I'll be able to play her in either EU or US

Infomatic have you been sneaking into my office and Snooping through my campaign notes?? I won't say anything for specific here, but take this as you may - despite everyone being "human", there will be some options for uniqueness in character creation once the recruitment thread drops.

Grand Lodge

Mine is a Witch. Not sure which type but a Lady from Louisiana, a Voodoo Priestess.

Helena can be based in NYC or London, what ever is needed.
I know just the book shop in london too.

Humm would be cool if we have Half Races, would love her to be a half elf.

Mind you, I would love her to be a 50 year old, valkyrie With a

Seer: Though they are most known for their skill in battle, many valkyries develop natural prophetic abilities. A valkyrie with this trait gains the ability to cast augury once per day as a spell-like ability, treating her character level as her caster level. The base chance for receiving a meaningful reply is 70% + 1% per caster level + 1% per Wisdom modifier, to a maximum of 100%. This racial trait replaces the valiant steed racial trait.

and

Planar Sense: Due to their travels amongst the planes, many valkyrie develop a keen sense of direction when it comes to strange realms. A valkyrie with this trait always considers Knowledge (planes) to be a class skill. She always knows what plane she is on, and knows the direction to the nearest gate, planar rift, or path to another plane. If she can sense a gate, planar rift, or path to another plane, she can automatically discern the plane it leads to. This racial trait replaces the fated sight racial trait.

She gets hired becouse she can sense Portals

Grand Lodge

i'll toss my hat in...this is interesting...

Gotcha. Thinking of a guy called Errol “The Eye” Faherty, an Irish partisan who relocated to London after coming up on the wrong side of the civil war a few years earlier. Would work well as a mesmerist only dimly aware of any magical talent; but could also work as an intimidating-glare barbarian depending on how the magic rules sort out.

Liberty's Edge

I'm thinking an old grizzeled veteran in 50s. Now a Hobo, but had been in the phillipines war, the Spanish American war, and ww1. I'll make him a 'gunslinger' or a Ranger.

I was thinking Helena is like really old, old Nordic old, and has just survived to the current day, kind of doing her job reluctantly. Keeping a very low profile. I can make her Finlander

Liberty's Edge

Was considering making the character 'like Casca', if you've read the series.

An eternal warrior.

Not a heroic type. More like he's cursed to always be alive in every century. Reincarnated for a particular period of war and danger.

I'm going to rework this character, built for a Call of Cthulhu game some time ago.

I've not decided on on a class yet, but it will need to be one with high skill points. Alchemist, Rogue, and Investigator are contenders for sure. Billie's strengths will be she's a medical doctor, she drives/flys, she charms, and she's rich. Her weakness will be combat; she's very civilian. Billie (true name Shen Wei) is from Shanghai, a very wealthy Chinese family, but has been abroad for university and medical school for several years. Human obviously. She'll probably be relying on the non-magical healing skills and feats rather than magic.

The current iteration of the character is set up for a 1920's campaign located in the UK, so she'll need to be updated for the different decade and possibly location.

Grand Lodge

A Voodoo Priestess and Seamstress. Eventually commanding special Puppets (Poppets). Using the Witch as the base. The Tatterdemalion Witch.

I'm still hoping someone makes this into a TV series. Of course, I've been hoping that for 40 years now.

Grand Lodge

Might switch to a disgraced nun eho preaches strange versions of christianity and beats people with her holy book. Aka a Living Grimoire and Preacher Inquisitor

Wow, there are some great concepts being tossed around. I am truly excited about all the interest. Working hard on the recruitment and support material, I am hoping to go live with it by Monday.

Awesome. Looking forward to it

Very late but I'll be checking for the recruitment thread. This sounds so cool.

My PC LOOKS like this

And she sounds like this
