My inner applied economics student prick wants to point out that answering that question will only encourage other people to answer it, but you handled it well enough.

Lol my inner copywriter says I should present three concepts to give the client two sacrificial lambs
"...And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high saying: Lord, bless this thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, that with it thou mayest blow thine enemies into tiny bits, in thy mercy. And the Lord did grin, and the people feasted upon the lambs, and sloths, and carp, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats..."

After great consideration, much hairpulling, and hair splitting, (many of which suddenly turned grey), Ladies and Gentlemen, in no particular order, I give you the final selections:
Cuddles: Orc Tetori Monk
Katya: Human Lore Warden fighter
Leandric: Human Arcanist
Harsk: Dwarven Warpriest of Torag
Cander: Human Sohei Monk
Anton: Human Transmuter Wizard
Again, thank you everyone for applying. I have been agonizing over things for a good two hours now, and I appreciate the large number of quality submissions. Thank you all again for your interest.
Those selected, please report to the Discussion thread, and dot Gameplay, which are now up.

Hey don't be bummed out. We actually need a cleric in another PBP I'm in. Please check it out.
Warning: Old School Feels.

Kingmaker Devon |

Come one come all!
After a bit of a rough start this games is under new management and is looking for you! That's right YOU!
Who are you? A trail blazer, a path finder....a....king...maker?
Yeah yeah you know what this is about let's get to it:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Character creation:
Level? 3!
Materials allowed: Paizo products only, no 3rd party. If its on the SRD you can use it. If its not (I am looking at you Occult Adventures) you can bring it but no being sneaky. I'll need you to include ability descriptions in the character sheets until I confirm the text another way. (I should get my copy eventually)
20 point builds, No stat lower than 8 before racial adjustment. I confess a bias against dump stats. I will honestly try to see "past" it if the concept is good.
Races: All Core races, any swaps on race features (APG, ACG, etc) Featured or Uncommon races subject to approval. ONE accepted applicant can be a featured or uncommon race. They are uncommon for a reason...So please keep that in mind.)
Characters: All classes allowed. Seriously. Shoot away. No psionics. Yes I know Dreamscarred is good, its just not what I'm ready to deal with, nothing personal.
HP: Max at First, PFS standard [half die +1] thereafter OR you can roll. You can pick this each time you level.
Role: All applicants need to explain how their character intends to function, both in and out of combat. (Just a brief description is fine) The original recruitment for this game noted Ultimate Campaign rules. I am not super fluent in them but if we have enough interest we will go there.
Gear: All characters start the game with 3000 for starting gold. (WBL) No more than 1500 on a single item.
Alignments: No evil, no questions. Any neutral character, especially CN needs to have a strong background reason for being so.
Traits: 2 traits allowed, one must be from the Kingmaker AP. 1 drawback for a 3rd trait is optional.
Backgrounds: Please take your time to give a background as to your character, where they are from, how they came to their current occupation and lifestyle, and why the message that they have received from the Swordlords of Restov draws them to the Greenbelt. This can be succinct but at this point the mission has been given and things are not going well. (The bandits are basically winning and the exploration has been slow.) YOU are the reinforcements. How'd that happen?
Posting Rate: 1 per day Mon-Fri, 1 per weekend preferred. (I'll mention more on this in my "bio")
------------------------------------------------------------
Who are we?
Current characters:
Cuddles the Orc Monk Yes you read that right, yes he is "intelligence challenged" and yes he hurts you when he hugs you. But he is lovable...and dangerous.
Alleria EagleEye the Inquisitor (Monster Tactician) of Erastil Our former glorious GM decided to swap seats and is now on the hunt.
Anton Marakov the Transmuter. He transmutes. He wizards. He has a lot scrolls.
What's our deal?
Basically we were off to a great start and then life sucker punched us. I opted to take over to keep our kingmaking dreams alive. I have advanced the plot a few months and have put us about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way through the first AP. It was a giant hand wave, its fairly ugly but it will hopefully get us where we need to be. You can read the last few posts of the gameplay to see where we are at.
In the future expect to see a separate thread for the kingdom, optional chances to expand on the opportunities in the area and a voice in crafting an experience that everyone can enjoy.
How Many and When?
I'm looking for 3-4 new players. At max that would make us 7 but there have been some attrition issues and the AP lends itself well to larger groups if you handle it right (and I believe I can). I propose to handle some of the more problematic elements that can chew up game play (like the exploring part) in interesting ways but some of that depends on the group that forms. Some folks like the exploring part more, some less so it depends on who we get
Anyone who dots the thread by August 7th will be in the running. Final submissions will need to be completed by 9:00 PM Pacific Standard Time (-7 GMT) on August 9th. Final submissions will be announced by 1:00 PM Pacific Standard Time (-7 GMT) August 10th
Special note: In addition to your basic submissions 2 of the slots available will be given to steady PbP veterans here on the boards. Why? Pacing and participation. I want new players to apply, I want folks to try something new but games lose people all the time and one of my commitments is to do good by the original folks who are still around. I figure if I feed 50% of the slots to the "solid and steady" I can create a space for the new and experienced alike.
Additionally note that current players will get input on who they like and what they think will work best.
Who are YOU, GM?
Just a guy. Playing and running D&D for almost 20 years (ack!) AD&D, 3.0, 3.5, Shadowrun, d6 Star Wars and on and on and on. You can comb through my profile I have been around. I also have a 5yr old and a recently graduated wife who is starting a new career. I mention that because some weekends are harder than others to get on and be present. Mon-Fri I am usually fairly around and I try to communicate if something is going on.
I'm working on my map-fu. Probably my biggest challenge.
I tend to be a "liberal" GM who is game for most things. I tend to value conceptual work over "builds" that optimize. That said I am not "writing a novel" or "creating art" in the game play. We are playing a game together and we will find our stride as a group.
Anything else, folks can ask.

JDPhipps |

Potentially interested, depending on whether or not I'm accepted into a Kingmaker recruitment I'm already in. The recruitment for that ends before your deadline, so I'll let you know either way whether I'm interested.
Character would be a Swashbuckler/Slayer, once a Gray Gardener of Galt who left the nation on his own terms, becoming sickened with the perpetual rise and fall of corrupt governments. In combat he's a Dex-focused melee fighter, who is focused on dirty tricks and other means to catch opponents off-guard. He's also very skilled at Intimidate, and I plan on taking the Dazzling Display/Gory Finish chain to make a character who's prowess at the kill is absolutely terrifying.
Out of combat, he's a skill-monkey, focusing on things you'd expect like Stealth and social skills (except Diplomacy). When it comes to kingdom roles, he'd be well-suited to the Royal Enforcer/Spymaster roles.
PS: I am running the AP myself, and so I have read the books. Figured I'd be open about that. If that means you'd rather pass on me, I understand. I don't remember specific details of places, and I won't be inclined to look at maps and such during play.

Duška Umírajícíkrev |

Very interested - pitching Duška Umírajícíkrev - a Half Elf Ranger (Wild Shadow). This was originally a concept character that my wife was to play in a real life Kingmaker that sadly never got off the ground (pesky RL and all its pitfalls!). I've rejigged the character and would jump at the opportunity to play her in Kingmaker.
I've been lucky enough to play alongside El Ronza and Choon so they know me as a player (I'll let them make their assessment of me to you :)
Version of Duška currently built is a 1st level kick-off, so will need to advance her to fit the requirements of the game. She originally was to be a bow-mistress, but you've already got that in spades with Aleria, so would likely go the 2 Weapon Fighting route with this little lady (with Weapon Finesse as the spine).
She's a former bandit (bastard child of legendary bandit leader Duma the Sly (who I'd conceived as having fey blood) and a Varisian gypsy woman (fortune teller) - hence some of the story elements in her equipment etc.
Duška is fey touched (her surname is Slavic for fey-blooded) and as such I'd see her as potential diplomat/go-between for the fey of the forest and the growing kingdom... A Warden of sorts?
Again feel free to comment on her as she stands - will post her build for levels 2 & 3 (as well as any tweaks to her current character profile). Will also flesh out her background pending any input from yourself and the group. Gut instinct is as a former bandit she might have skills/insider knowledge that will help deal with the stubborn bandit threat/foes the group have been dealing with. "Poacher turned gamekeeper if you will", and as such has been pressed into service for the Swordlords (possibly in lieu of a criminal punishment? - although she's more of a "Robin Hood" style bandit a la her erstwhile & rumoured father).
Cheers

Poor Wandering One |

dot.
Greeting Greenlanders. Looking over the characters so far I am seeing a dearth of both noble blood and divine might.
Would a cleric of Abadar (Trade & Protection domains), noble scion of house Garess be welcome?
I know Abadar is not a major deity in the region but it would create a nice conflict with Erastil's inquisitor.
House Garess should also lead to some infighting/stress with the Lebedan transmuter.
Could also go Erastil if Abadar is an issue though that might be over-egging the divine pudding.
Alternately should you want to avoid politics in this game the character also works as an Issian halfling priest of Hanspur looking to open up a new area for trade and maybe make a bit of Brevory into a halfling homeland.
Looking at a caster/support cleric. Though like any cleric able to hold the line with the fighters at least until the spells run out.
Let me know if the concept grabs you, I'll be fleshing it out as time passes.

Kingmaker Devon |

Well for my part I think the play between inquisitors and clerics can be fun and there sure is a lot of Erastilites in the area between PCs and NPCs. I play an Abadar faithful (not a cleric but vocal) in another game and I think that there is some good fun in the banter between the
Have to admit that the halfling angle appeals as well and halfling a halfling cleric and a orc monk would strike me as especially amusing...but I have a weird sense of humor perhaps.

Kingmaker Devon |

Oh sorry.Let me see if I can be more specific about the issue of divine overlap from a couple angles...
The kingdom tends to develop around the characters so if there is a lot of divine influence then it might lead to a more faith oriented society and like many places a diversity of religions. Obviously some are not as oriented towards "sharing" political space but Erastil and Abadar strike me as gods and churches that can find some common cause in creating a society.
As far as game balance/party balance I wouldn't consider it an issue to have a bard and a mage in a group so I don't really see a conflict between inquisitor and cleric.
On the Abadar topic I think that is a fine choice (as would be Erastil). That he doesn't have a major influence in the area could be the very reason why a church like that would send folks. If the writing is on the wall that Brevoy is looking to develop the area, or allow it to be developed by others, I can see all the major churches contemplating gaining a foothold or at least sending someone to see what is going on.
That said it could be "go team Erastil" which I imagine could lead to some very interesting developments in the area.
tl;dr I don't see a problem, I only see different opportunities. Go with what feels like a good concept.

Poor Wandering One |

I think the Halfling cleric of Abadar it is then. The halfling section on the Players guide notes that we hairy footed buggers wash up in the River Kingdoms from all over so that works
hmmmm likely LG, or LN to tweak Aleria.
Now Issian or could House Garess work..... How much do you/does this AP stress politics? Will we miss much without noble PC's?

Kingmaker Devon |

Well it can go either way. At some point the PCs will be sort of cut loose to do their own thing and external politics won't really be a thing...unless they are. So if players have noble connections, they can play a role, if they don't they won't "suffer" for it.
Obviously over time there will come a point where no matter what the origins of the kingdom are, external politics will exist but that will be about what has happened in the area over time as much as it will be what connections PCs potentially have, if that makes sense.
Edit: This would also be good moment to note that I am totally willing and able to let the "AP" part go off the rails a little or a lot. I try to let things unfold naturally over time and so with something as mercurial as kingdoms and politics it might make sense that certain things escalate or never happen as the group becomes a stronger and stronger presence. That is guided by the investment and the enthusiasm of the players and the group's interests. If most everyone wants kingdom politics "lite" and heavy story, we can go there. If most everyone ends up enjoying the politics and exploring more and the story less, we can go there too.

Kingmaker Devon |

Having run or played the AP is fine, I mean as long as you are not 3 chapters early saying "HEY lets go THIS way I've heard of a GREAT treasure..." I think the AP more than many others can be a very different experience instance to instance even if you recall AP contents. Besides it gives me more excuses to fiddle with things ;p
Unchained Rogue is just fine.

thunderbeard |

Potentially interesting. I'm currently in a kingmaker game that might be ending in book 1 (I didn't want to deal with spoilers by joining a second game, but this one's been stagnating for a while), and my character would be at level 3 from there...
So...how much of a focus do you intend to see on kingdom-building? And what does the post rate look like?

Kingmaker Devon |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

@Black Dow: Sorry! I got wrapped up in thinking about her potential bandit connections (and you know, how to leverage that to my totally benign dm interests) that I didn't give you any feedback. She looks good. I haven't really seen her archetype in action but it looks fun on paper. The fey aspects provide some interesting hooks. If you are willing I would go ahead and level her to 3rd just so I can get a sense of what you will look like if you join the group.
@thunderbeard: The group will dictate some of the focus on kingdom-building. Right now I think the current group is smack dab in the middle of "that sounds fun" but haven't gotten a taste for investing in it all the way because ---> Post rate is an issue. We have lost some players, had some challenges. My taking over the game and bringing in fresh blood is all about getting that rate up and running to, at a minimum, the PbP "standard" (1/ day Mon-Fri +/- a weekend post) if not more if the group can find good ways to split roles or even split up if there is the right group.
@Fly Rider: You wound me! I love fighters....though they can be mechanically boring. Zen Archers can be fun, I'll be interested to see what you come up with.

Aleria EagleEye |

The Archlich |

Hey there! I dotted before, but here's the character I'd like to submit :) Krayn is a reformed burglar, a chaotic good heart that worships Cayden Caylean and lives to run from his past.
I have been playing in the Paizo forums for a while and some of the players might know me already :) If it's the case, it's a pleasure to be playing with you guys again.
@GM, please feel free to ask me any questions or provide feedback.
The survivors scattered through the lands. Living in hunger and poverty, Krayn's life now became anything but easy. He started grouping with street bandits and invading nobles houses - at the beginning, just for food. As he grew up, for bigger profit.
His newborn "career" didn't exactly bring him many friends, and he kept a nomadic style of life in the slums of the biggest cities. Eventually he'd be caught, but after a while, free again, he'd go back to his low life.
As an accomplished burglar, he became sought by bigger thieves leagues to steal bigger treasures, and for a while enjoyed the challenge; but, as always, it changed one day.
While invading a church, he found himself confronted by its priest. Krayn always avoid open fights and preferred to hide. The coward outlaw tried to bluff his way out of the situation, but failed.
Instead of being beaten or thrown again in jail, however, the half-elf found another thing: understanding. The priest started teaching him about Cayden Caylean, how he became a god, and how a good heart could be a righteous tool even inside a chaotic soul.
He started helping at the church, abandoning his old ways, but eventually his past caught up to him. His head was now at a premium, after breaking his contract and helping the priest defend the treasures of the church.
Once the situation became just overwhelming and the priest was killed, Krayn fled. Fled to the north - to the further lands he could, to the most unexplored place he could find...

Here is a bard for your consideration:
He is the face of the group, and knowledge monkey. He is mainly a support character and he will eventually (at level 7) be gaining a cohort so that he can be even more helpful.
Jonathan is from North Brevoy. He's been dreaming of striking it rich, but there is not much chance of that on the misty shore where he lived. He's heard about the difficulties taming the wild river kingdoms, and this is his chance for glory and wealth.

@Archlich - Looking good. Brevoy certainly is a good long way from the Expanse...or is it? ;) Seeing an entry for hero points under your abilities. Though I have used the system I wasn't planning on it or this game, let me know if that causes any issues or concerns.
@Ira kroll - Curious about spell selection (or I might be missing it).

Duška Umírajícíkrev |

Got a bunch of the crunch done as requested Devon. Still have to settle on gear and 3rd Level Character Feat, but should give you a feel of my pitch in Duška.
Am considering Harrowed as her 3rd Level feat - which would add to her background flavour and also provide another wee dynamic - but wanted to check if it would be do-able through a random pick (from Harrow deck) or if you'd want to assign the card selected per day.
Am in two minds on it... as the obvious option is to plough into her combat style feats (2 Weapon Defence or Double Slice)...
RE: The PFS alias, just don't select a faction when you create the alias and your good to go.
