COMBAT ROUND 5

Not wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth, Ignacious fires off another Disrupt Undead cantrip. This time his luck is not with him, and the spell fizzles uselessly against the castle wall. (Ranged touch attack 2+1=3, miss)

Smarting at the loss of his second silver dagger Rhade shifts his now weaponless hand behind his back and kneeling slightly slices into the zombie with his longsword. The stroke takes the monster's head clean off and it tumbles lazily to the floor. The body keels over and starts twitching spazmodically. (Longsword attack 15+6=21, hit! Damage 8+2=10 hp; creature is dead)

Having peered back into the room just in time to see Rhade deliver the final blow, Zo nods in approval. As the party pauses to breathe and regroup at the end of the combat, she reports what she noticed about the next room. "No sign of kobolds on this side of the keep; their tracks all go in the other direction. Could be they were avoiding the zombies -- or something else. So we have a decision to make: follow the kobolds or see what they were afraid of."

Rhade looks over his shoulder as Ignacious's spell flashes past.

"Its down there," he points with his sword for a moment before heading over to retrieve the ornate silver dagger which once he's cleaned it he'll put it away.
"Its embarrassing that I was better wielding only the longsword than with any other weapon I've used today!" he admits to Gregori.
"So where now?" he asks.

Female Human (Kelishite) Celestial Sorceress 3

Cordelia stands over the corpse and sends a bolt of Heavenly Fire coursing into it, not letting up until the creature is burned to ash. She walks over to the other one and repeats the process, only then stopping to acknowledge the rest of the party.
She gives them the smile of a job well done and heads into the next room to so what Zo has found.
"Anything under that bed," she asks Ignacious, waving him over towards it.
"So what could have made the Kobolds avoid this room," she asks the room, possibly to the party and possibly to herself. "The Zombies most probably," she concludes.
"Zo, Rhade. Can you search it just to be sure?" As she says this, she proceeds to utter a short Arcane phrase, scanning the room for the telltale golden glow that would signify that her spell had discovered something magical.

Rhade sneezes.

Wiping his nose and shaking his head he looks back at Lady Crichton.
"Other than the stench of those two, I can't see anything of interest here, maybe those kobolds knew about these and released one as some kind of trap?" Rhade responds after wiping his hand on his leggings.

"Let's keep moving."

The party moves north from the stench-filled storage room and immediately encounters the narrow closet that Zo has already been through. It is approximately 10 feet in length and 5 feet in width and is strewn with small heaps of trash. On the wall there are empty hooks for hanging things and above your heads various strings are strung to also hang things from. The closet opens up on the other side into a decrepit bedroom with a large, mouldering four-poster bed in it. That room has two other exits: one to the west which opens into a hallway, and one to the north-east, which leads into another hallway. (Just a reminder that even though Zo has been through here, no one has actually searched these room yet.)

Sorry, Rhade, what exactly are you searching? I just described two different rooms (the closet and the bedroom). Also remember that one search check is only good for searching one object or one 5' by 5' area.

Definitely the closet!

Rhade avoids the bed as he takes a closer look at the closet.
"Hey, I've heard those stories about those things that hide under your bed until nighttime okay!" he shrugs.

Barely was the quip out of her mouth when she turned to catch the lovely bauble. For once, she seems at a loss for sarcastic words, turning the bracelet over in her fingers. Avoiding Rhade's gaze, she finally holds it out for her companions' perusal. "Father, Cordelia, Iggie ... any magical aura to it?"

The lovely bracelet seems to be worth about 750. It looks to be made of solid gold with real rubies inlaid. It does not detect as being magical, but something strange catches Cordelia's attention out of the corner of her eye. Turning towards the center of the bedroom she realizes that the bed itself is radiating magic; transmutation magic to be exact!

Iggie will wander over, looking disoriented. "I'll take a look at the bracelet, if you like! A person always ought to have a second opinion on matters of valuation, Abadar tells us."

"My dad was a bard," Rhade explains with a wry look.

The non-dwarves seem to have gotten the price for the bracelet about right. It's beautifully made of gold and rubies and looks like it would fetch about 750 gp.

The sorceress studies the bed in some detail but can't seem to figure out the properties of the bed. Perhaps if someone were to lie in it, they might find out for themselves?

"Hmm correct me here but how about we all move back and once Lady Crichton is far enough away she heavenly fire this sucker and we run before we're caught in whatever this thing actually does?" Rhade asks.

"I figure if this thing is evil," Rhade looks at Gregori at this point for confirmation.
"Then its probably the handiwork of Bargle and as a trap we really ought to insure nobody else falls for it, of course moving rapidly on we should be able to draw out anyone waiting nearby if this thing being blown up actually draws any attention, right Father Meghdad?" "I'm afraid my Heavenly Fire would do no good against the bed... unless of course it were an evil bed." She grins at Rhade. "Of course I do have a plain old everyday spell that would do the trick quite nicely I would think."
She turns to the others. "What do you all think: Leave it, Burn it or Lay on it?"

Sounds like the north east is the next way to go, oh hold on after finding out what happens to Ignacious of course!

M Aasimar Paladin (Warrior of the Holy Light ) 5

"Enough of this idiocy we move on!"

Ignacious does not feel anything overtly strange while lying in the moldy bed. It seems to have been left here quite some time ago and is in very bad condition. Numerous small vermin crawl around on the faded red sheets. When the dwarf sits up, he does feel extremely refreshed, however.

There are indeed three exits to the room, just as you described.

Female Human (Varisian) Rogue 3 | hp 14/21 | AC: 17 (14 touch, 13 ff) CMD 13 | Fort +1 Ref +8 Will +1 | Perception +6 | Init +8 | Attack of Opportunity +6

Zo relaxes visibly when the halfling arises unharmed from the transmuted bed. Finding the bracelet still in her hand, she looks confused for a minute, makes a move as if to slide the bauble on, then glances at the paladin and stows the jewelry in her pack instead. Nodding to Rhade to join her, she glides toward the exit to the northeast and peers carefully around the corner.

Perception (looking for creatures or major features) (1d20+6=21)

The corridor to the east Zo peers down is a very short one. Once one gets out of the room there is an immediate portal opens on a set of stairs going down. Just five feet or so beyond that doorway is another open doorway on the left (or north) side which opens into another room. The corridor ends shortly thereafter at the eastern outer wall of the castle.

There is the slight sound of muted conversation and whimpering coming from the northern room. It's definitely not in Common, and sounds a lot like the kobold's pidgin Draconic, but it's so quiet that's its hard to make sure.

Stealth (1d20+12=16)

Perception (1d20+6=8)

Looks like I'm going to have to get pretty close to hear with that Perception roll :P

Judging from their conversation, although it's hard to make out every word they are saying, they seem to be trapped in that room and trying to make their way back to the others. There is talk of dangerous undead and crazy men with swords and magic.

Female Human (Varisian) Rogue 3 | hp 14/21 | AC: 17 (14 touch, 13 ff) CMD 13 | Fort +1 Ref +8 Will +1 | Perception +6 | Init +8 | Attack of Opportunity +6

Forgot to say that Zo would have retrieved her lantern after the zombie fight. It's in the room with the magic bed now, though; she wouldn't have taken it down the hallway with her.

Stealth (1d20+12=31)

Zo creeps back down the hallway to her friends so quietly they are almost startled at her reappearance. "We've got stairs going down and a room to the north with kobolds in it -- the ones that got away from us in the courtyard, I think. They seem to think they're trapped in there. They've avoided this room because of the zombies and don't know we've destroyed them." Zo pauses. "Bargle is below us," she states matter-of-factly. "I'd bet Iggie's last gold piece on it. He doesn't seem the type to room with kobolds. And I don't think the two in that room are brave enough to try to come down behind us or warn Bargle. I don't think there's much left to this level -- the mirror-image of this side, probably, and maybe a room in the middle -- and it's all been overrun by kobolds. So," she concludes, "do we take out those two in the room and clear out everything aboveground or head below?"

M Aasimar Paladin (Warrior of the Holy Light ) 5

"I'll gladly kill everything between us and Bargle, but if he's downstairs I see no reason to waste time with kobolds."

Gregori looks to the others to see their opinions, but his preference is obvious and he almost vibrates with the need for ation.

"In Iggie's magic bed?" She frowns. "If we really want the kobolds dead, I wouldn't come at them from here. Right now, they think the zombies are still blocking their exit this way; if we come through this door, they'll just flee the way they came -- and they know their way around this place better than we do. If we could be certain of being reasonably quiet," with a doubtful glance at Gregori's armor, "we should go around the other way, through the unexplored half of the keep. Then, ideally, some of us should double back this way to cut off their escape. If we really want them dead," she concludes with a shrug.

"A place of safety seems reasonable and wise, to my mind," Iggie says" and the bed does seem to be more restful than it would otherwise seem... And while I cannot make those of us less than gifted with stealth any more stealthy, I can make one of us significantly faster for a brief time once, or cast a magic mist that obscures vision so as to better surprise the fiends. Of course, they can most definitely use it against us, as well!"

Yeah I think it was in the Blog, so I guess technically not official until publishing date.

What about sneak attacks & crits on undead & constructs? Mentioned during Beta, but I'm not sure it's in the book.

I believe, although I don't see it exactly in writing, that sneak attacks are allowed versus undead in the Beta.

Hey guys, spent the last 2 days driving from New York to Kanasas. My wife's mom is dying. I'll post when I can just to get my mind on something else.

So sorry, Mark; you've been having a terrible summer. :(

Scarab Sages

Sorry to hear about the sad situation, Mark. Post when you can, but obviously there's no pressure coming from us. Family is THE most important thing.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

Yup, here's to the end of that.

Scarab Sages

Just a reminder (while I am reminded of it) that you can only fumble once per encounter (yeah, that's 4e creep, isn't it?) and that you can "bank" your crits in order to stave off fumbles.

Having said that, please keep track of your fumbles. I can see now that on the longer combats I will forget.

Scarab Sages

I'd like to try something different to try and speed things up a bit. I'm happy if you make your own rolls using Invisible Castle most of the time, but at certain times I will make them for you, just to speed things up. If we have to wait around for this many people to roll initiative before we start combat, well, we'll be waiting around a lot, especially if someone is busy and doesn't check these boards daily.

If you don't want me to roll for you, please feel free to roll initiative a bunch of times and post the results here. That way I can always come back here and pick your next roll.

Thanks,

BrOp

If we have to wait around for this many people to roll initiative before we start combat, well, we'll be waiting around a lot, especially if someone is busy and doesn't check these boards daily.

Thanks,

BrOp

Yeah, sorry I've been busy the past few days and haven't had much of a chance to check other than to catch up and do a minor post here and there.

I have no problem at all being DMPC'd if I'm tardy.

Scarab Sages

I've been busy here and haven't checked in much. More to come very soon!

Scarab Sages

Hey folks,

Just to let you know, I'll be at GenCon this year (my first time ever!). If you're planning on being there as well, please feel free to stop by and say hello. You'll generally be able to find me in Paizo's "Pathfinder Society" room running games. I'll have a tag with my messageboard account name on it.

If you don't want me to roll for you, please feel free to roll initiative a bunch of times and post the results here. That way I can always come back here and pick your next roll.
Thanks,BrOp

I have no problem with this haven't been able to use Invisible Castle so if it helps speed things up then by all means, I don't know if I've mentioned this here but am in the process of moving home which looks like it'll happen sometime between now and early september will try and update when I know exactly when but this might mean I can't post until I can change my details with my email provider and they acknowledge it.

Scarab Sages

So far only Zo, Ignacious and Rhade have posted their actions for this round. I feel a bit strange DMPCing half the party. Should I wait a bit more?

Particularly since they're the half that can keep this from being a TPK?

"Father Meghdad" posted a while back that he had a new job that was keeping him busy, and I don't think he's posted since. I've seen our paladin and sorcerer around the boards, though. Perhaps they just need a bit more time to come save us from being eaten? ;)

Back in the saddle. Thank you for your patience.

Scarab Sages

Hi folks,

Just want to let you know that between now and the end of GenCon my posting will decline in frequency a bit as I'll be very busy. I'm running 9 Pathfinder Society games there, so I have my work cut out for me.

I hope that after August 18th we can come back strong, as there is still plenty of good 'sploring to do in Castle Mistamere, not to mention confronting Bargle, of course.

Best,

BrOp

OK BrOp, I have a problem with Cordelia brought about by one of the Rules changes from BETA to PFRPG.

Spoiler:

Humans have lost their Free Martial Weapon Proficiency, something which I think is utterly stupid and was one of the things I thought was really good about the new Rules (seriously!!! considering that every other Race bar Half-Elves gets access to a few free WPs, is it at all that powerful that Humans get to chooose 1 Weapon to be Proficient in?). This means that she no longer has access to Martial Weapon Proficiency (Scimitar), which in turn negates her ability to use her Masterwork Scimitar. I seriously do not like this rule (and one other concerning some Sorcerers, but don't get me started on that one either) and since Cordelia was made from a flavour perspective (worshipper of Sarenrae) to take advantage of this rule I am doubly not happy. What should I do?
Your thoughts please...

Spoiler:
Please keep the free martial weapon proficiency in the scimitar. This is about having fun.

Hi folks,

I am back from GenCon where I had a great time running many, many games for Pathfinder Society.

Is everyone ready to pick up where we left off? I would also like to update the characters for the Pathfinder RPG game. If someone doesn't have the new tome, you can find the rules at such sites as http://www.d20pfsrd.com/

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Looking forward to getting back to Castle Mistamere.

Think I have Zo updated to Final rules now. A lot of trouble to go to just to get eaten by a harpy. ;)

I'm still here! I've been catching up with work after returning from GenCon. Sorry about the prolonged silence on my end.

There are still a few folks who have not posted their actions for this round. As an apology for being gone for so long, and to get things started again, why don't all the enthralled PCs make another new and improved Will save to resist the effect of the harpy's song.

Also, it seems that MythrilDragon (Father Meghdad) has left us for good. He hasn't posted since June in character, and checking his page, it seems he hasn't posted as MythrilDragon since then either. We can either replace him and bring in a new character, get someone to play Father Meghdad's character or just loose him from the group entirely. The last option would mean no Cleric in the party, of course.

What is your preference?

BrOp

Did we do racial hit points in this game? If so, I guess I need to subtract 6 hp for Final rules.

It's a shame to lose Father Meghdad. His character had such an intergral tie to the mission, it'd be hard to write him out.

Zo wrote:

Yup, everyone just goes back to HD + Con modifier.

Zo wrote:

I agree :(

Took off my 6 HP. Zo still has 25 HP out of 3d8 with no Con bonus, so I must have put her favored class into hit points....

Never mind. We used Con score in this game instead of racial hit points, so I had to take off an extra 4. Too... many.... options... to remember!

I will be updating Iggie on Monday. If we're down a cleric, would it useful for Iggie to be slighly revamped to a Wizard 2/Cleric 1 of Abadar? I don't think much would change that has affected the game thus far.

I think this is a good idea, James.

Scarab Sages

Also, James, since Iggy is snapping out from under the "siren's song", he'll get to actually act this round! Go ahead and please post an action. Thanks!

BrOp

EDIT: As to Father Meghdad, why don't I just DMPC him for the rest of the adventure. That way I can have a little RP fun and the party can have more healing. If you still want to turn into a Cleric 1/Wizard 2, that's still fine.

I'll keep Iggie a Wizard then. He's more fun as an arcanist!

Ignacious Throckmorton III wrote:

Sounds good. Remember there are some changes in the new rules. First of all you loose your bonus hit dice (Con score), so your hp should now be a more modest (but still quite adequate) 17.

I think you should also get more spells. Spells/day for a Wiz 3 with Int 16 is: 0-level 4, 1st-level 3+1, 2nd-level 2+1, with the +1 being conjuration spells of course.

Also, Copying spells into your spellbook is now MUCH cheaper. The total costs for 2 second and 1 first level spell is now only 90 gp (instead of 500). That means that you have 410 gp more gold than you did before. Care to spend it on something.

I'm also looking at the new celestial creature template released with the Bestiary preview (damn, I wish they'd publish it!). It looks like the "Smite evil" ability lasts until the targeted creature is dead. It also says that the creature gets its Cha mod as an attack bonus against the smitten creature and its HD as a damage bonus. Since the 3.5 fire beetle (as an example) has 1 HD, but only a 7 Cha, I'm going to rule that it gets a +1 to attack and damage until the creature is dead. Not bad for a little celestial critter, especially since it does 2d4 damage.

Also note that the summon monster tables have changed, and you are no longer able to summon the same creatures you did before.

More comments for others soon!

Adjusted Rhade accordingly, one question do we still get that bonus skill point for either a Craft or Profession?

Scarab Sages

Rhade wrote:

Yes.

In other news, here are a few specific comments regarding character conversion. Please let me know if I did the math wrong, or if I didn't account for something.

Rhade:
Your max hp should be 30, I believe (10+7+7+6 Con mod), unless you take your favored class bonus in hp.
Speaking of which, where did you take your favored class bonus? I'm guessing skills, since I see 25 ranks in skills when you should only have 21 (6+Int bonus per level).
CMB +5, CMD 17

Gregori:
Max HP should be 30 (10 + 7 + 7 + 3 Con + 3 feat), unless you took your favored class bonus as hp.
All medium and heavy armors have gained a point of AC in the conversion, so your field plate should give you a +8 AC bonus.
You should be able to Lay on Hands 7/day with the "Extra Lay on Hands" feat (1 Level + 4 Cha + 2 feat).
Longsword damage 1d8+2
Warhammer damage 1d8+2
CMB +5, CMD 15

Zo:
HP should be 18 (8 + 5 + 5), unless you took your favored class bonus as hp.
Your Perception bonus at the top of your sheet should match the recalculated one at the bottom.

Cordelia:
HP should be 23 (6 + 4 + 4 + 6 Con + 3 Feat) unless you took your favored class bonus as hp.
Your Heavenly Fire ability now only works 6/day and does 1d4+1 points of healing or damage.
Your Bloodline Arcana now gives all summoned creatures DC 1/evil. I don't know if that would make you want to change your spell selection, but if you does, please go ahead and do so.
Heal is now a class skill for you, so if you put 1 rank into it, you would immediately get the +3 class skill bonus.

Father Meghdad:
Since I'll continue playing him, here are my changes.
He'll have 18 hp (currently 10).
Domain abilities are largely unchanged, although he can only use them 6/day.
He gets domain spells again, so he'll take Burning Hands and Produce Flame.
His spells per day are now 4/3+1/2+1
I'm going to remove his Combat Casting feat and take Selective Channeling instead.

I went back and checked the character generator, and I did put her favored class bonus in hit points so 21 should be correct. I don't know why the Perception at the top was off; it's a standard output from the generator stat block. I just deleted it.

Just wondering what everyone's status is. I've heard from Zo and Rhade recently. Is everyone else (with the exception of Father Meghdad, of course) still into the game?

Thanks,

No problem. Thanks for letting us know.

So far, only Zo and Rhade have posted their actions for this round. I am loathe to DMPC everyone else, considering that's three other people. Is everyone else still around?

At the moment I can still post until the 10th hopefully as sometime that day i'll lose my internet connection until I move home and quite probably won't be back online until at least the 25th when it gets reactivated.

Sorry, a bit busy in real life. I'll head over there.
