Just updated the food and provisions gathering for the past 4 days. Everyone gathering has gotten into a routing and is happily taking 10 on everything. With the current setup, you can gather 370 lbs of food a day.


Figured I'd move the game forward a bit while still trying to give you guys the initiative in questioning.

Also, I would like to mention that I am glad all of you are making strong characters and roleplaying well too. I find that the game needs a good balance of both mechanics and "fluff" to work well and you guys are making it easy to incorporate both.

Just an FYI - I will probably not post until Monday or Tuesday. I am running the first game of a campaign tomorrow after taking a break for the summer, am doing a 42 km back packing trip saturday/sunday, and have to pick two players for a Kingmaker game I am taking over on the boards Monday. It's been awhile since I updated Falcon. I can't figure out how I had him with Combat Expertise. I know we get them for free, but we have to meet prereqs, and there's no way Mr. 7 Int was doing that. Was there some other house rule at creation time that waived that, or let a fighter use an alternate stat? I never expect to use the feat, but I had planned on him taking the Kitsune Style feat tree, which requires an Int 13 and Combat Expertise. He does have the Dirty Fighting feat, which allows him to act like he has those two things for the purposes of the Improved Maneuver feats like Improved Dirty Trick.

Just trying to figure out if I did a major faux pas in character creation, or if I'm forgetting something.

Falcon is updated. Swapped out the plan for Kitsune Style and just went with Vicious Stomp earlier. He also now has Ki Throw, which vastly increases his tactical options to move bad guys around the battlefield. Now that he doesn't lose his attack when tripping (if it's successful), expect him to be doing that more

I definitely miscommunicated something about the troglodyte conversation. I wanted to convey that the troglodytes are very prideful, do not want to be beholden or allied to anyone, and hate surface creatures, especially humans. What side they are on, if any, is still up in the air given the conversation you overheard.

I know it’s weird for LG characters to shout things like “Laws be damned” but really? Toss them in a hole and if they can crawl out they’re innocent, except nobody ever is? Why not drown them to see if they’re a witch while they’re at it? Those aren’t laws, that’s disguised anarchy. Justice should be blind but not arbitrary.

Falcon just lost his temper. Master Tsumoto would be gravely disappointed.

Solace is displeased. Though the law is certainly s%*#, we are weighing the lives of two people against a whole tribe. Are we going to kill them all now? Are there females and children as well in this tribe? Will any remaining troglodytes team up with the hobgoblins now?

Yeah, I'm quite liking it as well. This adventure is very good at putting the PCs in interesting, unconventional situations.

As for fighting the troglodytes, from a practical perspective it definitely would have been better to negotiate a deal, but morally I don't think fighting them is particularly bad. They're the ones who were about to execute two of our companions without a real trial, and we tried to rescue them nonviolently first. It seems pretty unlikely that this group of troglodytes is entirely adults of a single sex, but we don't need to fight anyone who isn't attacking us or preventing us from rescuing the prisoners.

Yeah, I would assume the ones rushing us right now are legit combatants that we are fighting in a fair battle. if they stop attacking us and surrender, or once we beat this group and push further into the caves to find presumably innocent members of the tribe we should not keep killing them.

It's the presumption of who is or isn't innocent that is the problem. We still do not know who attacked who first. If the humans were the aggressors, then the troglodytes are innocent and should be within their right to punish their attackers according to their laws. We would have no issue with killing troglodytes for attacking us. We even recently executed a prisoner. I do not think we have any moral highground here and I am trying to decide how to have Solace act once this fight is over.

Actually... those are pretty good points. I guess the troglodytes' behavior isn't too different from our execution of Shalra.

I think we can be reasonably certain that our villagers did not seek to ambush wandering troglodytes with sticks they found under a bush. Now if the villagers and trogs bumped into each other in the woods and our people panicked, grabbed some sticks and reacted, that would at least be reasonable. There is a difference in what kind of prisoner we had versus what the trogs have, even if our people did land the first blow. The hobgoblin was an enemy soldier. I know distinctions between combatants and non-combatants don’t really exist in a fantasy setting.

Shalra hunted our foragers down, killed them, left a head behind to scare us and would gladly give our position away and come back to kill more townsfolk if left unchecked, she was executed because there was no other choice at that point. Yorc was also an enemy and his willingness to stop causing us harm was enough for him to be healed and welcomed into the group.

Despite we not knowing who attacked first, we still made it clear that we felt the encounter was a misunderstanding and that we don't wish the troglodytes harm. So I think that makes both situations quite different, not killing Shalra would get dozens killed, not killing our villagers would do the Troglodytes no harm.

Let us also keep in mind that we have no need to kill the Troglodytes. Negative hit points are a thing and unless we deal enough damage to instakill them we should be able to stabilize most Troglodytes and possibly even heal back into shape once we're leaving the cave.

Of course, if we take the morals and ethics we have in real life and apply them to the game, then we likely have no moral high ground (actually, i'd say 90% of all Pathfinder PCs ever made would be evil if seen through that lens), but we also have to take into consideration that to characters in the Inner Sea, what they're doing is not just morally right but aproved of by even the goodest of gods, Paladins do have an ability dedicated to destroying evil, after all, and Troglodytes are generally evil.

The problem is that we cant let them live now. I doubt they would leave us in peace after this. We dont know how many more tribes there are and this may give them cause enough to join the hobgoblins.
