Hello people I selected. Please take the next few days to integrate yourselves as a group. You would all know each other to some extent so talk together and figure out how you know each other. I am travelling and running a game today so I won't be around much. I will work up a bigger 'start' post by Tuesday. I figured getting an earlier start isn't a bad idea though.

So have fun, talk amongst yourselves, and get to know one another. Also, if you have any suggestions/ideas/comments/concerns let me know as they come up.

Hi, everyone! Damn, that's a handsome Warpriest! So glad to be a part of this campaign! Can't wait to play with you all!

How you might know Zig:
Zig here has become a bit of a social pariah in the past few years. You all probably know him as the child who survived the Ramgate massacre by "Hiding under the corpses of Hobgoblins," but rumors abound that Zig (or something evil inside him) was responsible for producing those corpses.

Since his return to Phaendar, Zig has grown to an enormous size for a 16-year-old, towering over the villagers at 6'6" and gaining an intimidating amount of muscle mass with little to no perceived effort. Rumor has it that at one point, seeking the aid of the Gods for his strange condition, he prayed at the shrines of Desna and Erastil only for the shrines themselves to reject him; flowers wilted, the wood of the statues cracked, and it's widely known as a fact that he is barred from praying there.

Now Zig is rarely seen: Only on his journeys to the woods to cut and deliver timber, at the Taproot Inn speaking awkwardly to young Alice Greenfens, and making his way to and from the Sexton household. At any given time, he can usually be heard muttering to himself in languages that most of the townsfolk don't understand... unless they're fluent in Abyssal.

"નહીં, વાત કરવાનું બંધ કરો હું વૂડ્સમાં ઊંડે નહી જઈશ. હું તમને જે જોઈએ તેની કાળજી નથી કરતો! બસ બંધ!"

Translation: "No, stop talking. I won't go deeper into the woods. I don't care what you want! Just shut up!"

As you can imagine, most of the townsfolk keep their distance.

Very excited about this one. I have wanted to play this sort of character for a long long time. It will be interesting to see how an older character fits into things.

Connection Starting Points:

As far as connections well, Claustipher has been in town for what I would imagine is the entirety of most of your lives. A former adventurer and teacher he has been out of service for quite some time working as a scribe when needed and helping where he could.

I would think anyone with an arcane predilection would be very familiar with him. Also he would head to a local tavern fairly regularly. He would also have a soft part for anyone a bit outside of society.

GM: A request. Could we Dot AND delete in the gameplay thread? That will get the game listed in our 'current campaigns' tab which is always a big help for seeing things have happened in discussion.

connections:

Looking at the line up I think Daniil would have a good relationship with Oliva and Solace (they all worship the same deity and have spent a lot of time at the Riverwood shrine. He would also have met Yarro and Elyas there.

He would have a passing knowledge any one who spent time at the taproot inn Zig & Claustipher.

Ian he would know the least about. Daniil is 6 years older then Ian and that is probably enough that they weren't friends.

Sander Yarro connections capsule:

Yarro, oldest party member other than Claustipher (42), has been in Phaendar for 10 years as a surgeon and healer, as well as leader of a small congregation of Sarenrae.

He would be on most familiar terms with those connected to the healing arts (Oreld, the various herbalists and medicinal dealers) and the other practitioners of faith (mostly Erastil) in the community.

Suggested Connections:

Daniil - Sander would know the main practitioners of the other faiths in the region, especially Father Shamus, and would therefore know of his acolyte Daniil and the story of his family's slaughter

Elyas Tamran - passing acquaintance, as Sander would know the main practitioners of the other faiths in the region

Olivia - Sander would likely know of Olivia through her sister the herbalist, as Sander would know all those dispensing or supporting the healing arts in Phaendar

Solace - Like most of Phaendar, probably knows of the half-orc paladin

Zig Druzzar Sander has seen him about town, likely knows he speaks Abyssal but can't translate and thus would be troubled by his condition

Claustipher Whetwistle - Probably Sander's most likely friendly connection, as Sander has been brought into the fold of Phaendar's "village elders" and may know him via those discussion. Also likely to have utilized his services as scribe, though Sander himself is a literate cleric

Ian Ros - Probably knows _of_ him from the infamous Hobgoblin attack

Hey, folks - Ian is a trouble-making, neglected little boy with some magic powers. Odds are, your character either feels sorry for him or thinks he's a massive pain in the ass.

I agree that Solace would likely know Olivia and Danii based on our worshiping the same deity and likely spending time at the Riverwood Shrine.

Aside from the Shrine, Solace would likely spend some time at the Taproot Inn, occasionally helping with her family's stall at the market green and spending a good bit of time out in the woods.

As for Ian, at 14 you're old enough that Solace wouldn't view you as a child. If he can't act like a proper young adult, Solace would have no use for him.

Here is my character alias. I'll touch up the stats formatting shortly.

Elyas would know the other religious characters in town, especially since it was mentioned that religion doesn't play a huge part in people's lives here.

I need to read through some of the other profiles to get ideas there

So, our group of 8 has 5 religious characters (2 clerics, 1 warpriest, and 2 paladins). Maybe they have all gotten close over time through friendly discussions on philosophy and the spiritual health of the community.

Elyas knows of claustifer and ian, but likely doesn't know them well.

He may have met Zig in his studies as a healer, as maybe has tried to help him understand his transition.

Will Ian be insufferable enough we will want to kick him out of the group? I'm just trying to determine how annoying you plan on playing him because I have no desire to play in a game where the annoyance of a character ruins my enjoyment of the game.

Sander Yarro I am certain that Claustipher and you would have some familiarity with each other. I would imagine he would have need of your services form time to time and he would have brought you little items over the years. Also, great map!

Ian - Clearly, in my mind, there would be a connection as your magical powers developed. I would imagine Claustipher would have at least spent some time trying to get you on what he feels is the right path.

Having been in town a long time Claustipher would have a passing acquaintance with pretty much everyone else so i am open to whatever connections people would like to throw in.

Elyas Tamran wrote:

Elyas has indeed most likely tried to help Zig, but the big guy's become a bit wary of good-aligned gods since his mere presence cracked a statue of Erastil and caused a bouquet of flowers on Desna's altar to wilt. Iomedae, known even to laypeople as being a rather uncompromising Goddess, would certainly give him a bit of pause.

Nonetheless, he'd certainly heard of your more lax attitudes than other Clerics of The Inheritor, and probably approached you asking if you understood the language of his murmurs (Abyssal). When the answer to that was "No," he would have looked around to see if others were listening in, and said:

"Well... there's another one. Another voice that I don't understand. It sounds like: 'ឆ្កែខ្មៅរត់នៅពេលយប់។ នេះជាទឹកហើយនេះគឺជាការទទួលទានសាប៊ូពេញហើយបាត់មុតគឺពណ៌សនៃភ្នែកនិងពន្លឺនៅក្នុងន ោះ...' And then it just repeats, always. From the moment I wake until I sleep."

Aklo:
"THIS IS THE WATER AND THIS IS THE WELL DRINK FULL AND DESCEND THE HORSE IS THE WHITE OF THE EYES AND THE DARK WITHIN THE BLACK DOG RUNS AT NIGHT"

What Zig has just spouted is a handful of what sound like precise burbles and growls. He says he's heard that one series of sounds over and over and over again to the point where he can repeat it without thinking, despite having no command over "whatever language it's in."

While not detectable in any way (unless someone has the "Detect Expertise" feat or access to more potent divination), Zig's literal inner-demons are still probably quite disturbing. Elyas may think that more strict adherents to the word of Iomedae would brand Zig as a threat rather than a deeply troubled boy.

Sander Yarro, Zig has most likely approached you for advice as well, hearing of The Dawnflower's emphasis on compassion and redemption. He most likely has uttered the same phrase in Aklo, as it's the only thing that specific voice ever says to him.

Claustipher - agreed

Zig - That makes much sense. An acolyte of Sarenrae would be receptive to your need to understand the condition. Yarro would've likely recognized and identified the languages, but have been unable to translate. Troubled by the nature of the language and your unnatural growth, he would have written the nearest lsrge temple to Sarenrae to seek advice and counsel. I think we can assume at the start of the campaign that no such useful information has arrived.

@Claustipher - I just made the gameplay thread, so people can dot and delete if they want to.

@Sander - the map is awesome, thanks for making it.

@Ian - While I don't think it will be a problem, I am about the same as Solace with my tolerance for immaturity. If I had known you were describing Ian as "insufferable and obnoxious and immature" I would not have selected him. Please keep it to "mischievous and delinquent" with a "strong sense of righteous anger". There's plenty of room for growth from there without being overly annoying.

That being said, please let me know of any issues I or other players cause you in the game. I want this to be a strong group that plays together well, and communication is key to that. PM me if you ever need to talk about something and don't want to in discussion, even if its not related to the game.

Oh yeah - I never plan to be bad enough to be unlikable. Don't worry. Consider him like Eggsy from Kingsman, if you've seen that movie.

Ian wants to be good. A bunch of faithful older adults around him, all Good-aligned, will be exactly what he needs.

Ian is likely only to have a friendship with Claustipher.

First of all, great map, Sander!

With five divine-type characters in the party, I'm thinking about roleplaying Olivia as a more reluctant one, less experienced in divine matters.

Claustipher would have a relationship with Ian, trying to steer him and what not. As he would say.

"Yes, yes. I got into some myschief as a youngster myself. No I belive in order and law but in my youth... well lets just say Color Spray can really annoy the neighbors on the side of their house." he chuckles "Oh did my mentor tan my hide. Ian has a responsibility now to go with his arcane predilection I will see him true."

Well it looks like everyone is getting set up and the connections are coming together.

Phaendar is a town of about 400 people with two main satellites, Gristledown and Shoren. Gristledown is a logging thorp of about 15-18 people depending on the day, growing as large as thirty when there is a push for more timber. Shoren is an agricultural village of about 80, mainly devoted to farming the fields to the south and logging on its north side.

Of the people in Phaendar, there are a few prominent people you would know of, mainly owners of businesses:

Jet - Owner of the Taproot. Generally friendly and well respected by all.

Vane Oreld - A surly old man who dislikes having to act as the town healer, but also to vain to let those of lesser skill treat others. Most people respect him quite a bit for the services he renders. His shop also supplies all sorts of potions, oils, tinctures, and other remedies for issues of all kinds.

Kining Blondebeard - The best smith in Phaendar, Kining is cold, grouchy and dislikes pretty much everyone. However, no one in Phaendar can work the forge better. Currently the town council and her are having a disagreement about repairing the bridge. Kining raised her price after rendering the bridge unusable without a scaffold and brace to hold it up and won't fix the bridge until they meet her demands.

Noelan - Noelan is the caretaker of the Riverwood Shrine and the Shrine to the Green Faith. Many seek him out for advice regardless of their faith.

Rhyna - Noelan's apprentice

Aubrin "Abby" the Green - Former Chernasardo Ranger, this one legged woman is one of the fiercest and most boisterous persons in town. Always quick to help others, and quicker to tell one of her many stories, Aubrin is well liked by all in the town.

There's a bit more background to help you dig into the game. You will get to know these NPCs as well as many of the ones on the list better as the game progresses.

The game starts with all of you having a drink/meal in the Taproot Inn, so if you want to give a description of your day at the festival and your reaching the Taproot Inn and either meeting each other or taking a seat with another group (there are no open tables so you'll have to share with someone) that would be fine with me. If you haven't posted by the time I do I will simply stick you in the Inn somewhere.

I look forward to running the game and as promised will put up the first post on the 21st. Seems only fitting that the campaign and gameplay start on the same date.

Has Kining's dispute with the council strained the local logging industry? If so, how long has this dispute been going on? Are the woodsmen of the village able to work without use of the bridge?

When out and about he is more of a spectator then a participant but at this point in his life it is his nature. If there are food offerings he will taste here and there, he would also stash some at home on his frequent trips back for a little quiet.

After a full day at the festivities Claustipher would certainly look for Ian before heading to the Taproot Inn.

Once there if there are any scholarly, the religious bent members of the party spring to mind, he would guide Ian to that table with him. At this point he would have had enough of the rowdier part of the crowds.

Olivia would likely be helping her family over the day and going to the Inn to rest a bit, she probably doesn't care about which table she would sit in as long as its far away from Rikel.

Updated the Chernasardo hex map. Paizo's area maps leave something to be desired thus far in the AP.

Arbeck - Small transshipment location. You can't see it in the map but the Inkwell river is pretty much directly below Arbeck. This makes Arbeck a great location for putting goods coming from the north and west onto boats to sail east to Tamran or south to a variety of locations (The Deepcut River and the Marideth river west of Phaendar are not easily navigable). Arbeck is a village of about 60, with those not involved in the shipping trade farming the plains to the north.

Cavlinor - Link to Cavlinor info. Cavlinor is a thorp, with between 5 and 30 inhabitants at any given time, thoug usually there are around 10. Cavlinor has no real industry and is primarily used as a trade post and temporary home for the travelling Elves in the area.

On another note, none of the rivers are to scale. That's just how Paizo likes to draw their rivers.

They would move the lumber by land from Gristledown to Arbeck (just added it to the map) on the Marideth River to go by water. Some wood would also go by land as it can be faster and safer depending on water levels/time of year and the amount of traffic on the Marideth.

The bridge is unusable without a scaffold, but Kining has currently left a scaffold in place until she decides to fix the bridge's capstone. With the scaffold the bridge is fully usable, just more likely to be broken during flooding, bad weather, etc. Because the bridge is still usable, no one is really concerned enough to hound Kining about it other than the council, who understand the importance of a fully functioning bridge.

Solace doesn't care too much for festivals in general. They just mean large groups of people gathered about and more people means more chance her appearance/heritage will be commented upon.

She'd likely just spend the day by helping her family haul items from their family farm up to the market green stall to sell during the festival.

Then, after a busy day of hauling and unloading goods, she's be in need of a drink and meal at the Taproot Inn.

The Market Festival is the one day of the year when Sander Yarro pulls down his scimitar and shield from above his hearth, and dresses in the yellow and red accoutrements particular to the clergy of Sarenrae. He wanders the square all day, greetings friends and acquaintances, purchasing nick-knacks from visiting merchants, and all together trying to show the friendly face of his faith.

By the evening, tired by the day's activities, he retires to the Taproot for and meal and drink among friends. If he spots Claustipher and his young charge, or village elder Barlowe, he would certainly pull up a bench and reminisce about festivals past, but would make sure the table was served by the widow Harmon, who'd he would have some noticeable trouble keeping his eyes off of. As she passes by, they occasionally exchange pleasantries. Others at the table notice she always sees to his needs first...

Now that logging details are sorted out, now to Zig's day during the festivities!

Despite music and cheer audible outside, Zig's day was destined to be unpleasant.

He awoke, dressed, ate, and bid good morning to the Sextons. Malik leaves Zig with a forcible slap on the back, exclaiming:
"No work today, Ziggy! You know damned well there are no wagons to Gristledown on festival days! You should get yourself out there! Live a little! Who knows? Those big muscles of yours might attract the attentions of a certain barmaid..."

At this, Zig's face plunged into his hands. Having busted his friend's chops, Malik skipped gleefully out of the house to his job at the Trading Company.

But embarrassment had not been the cause of Zig's facial withdrawal. It was horror. At that moment his best friend ceased speaking, a familiar voice scored Zig's mind like teeth on the skin of an apple:

છોકરાને હટાવો તે ખૂબ જ જાણે છે તમારા ઇન્ફેક્શનને આ જ્ઞાન આપની જરૂર નથી. તેના ઉશ્કેરવું અને તેના શ્વાલ તરીકે શાહુખ વસ્ત્રો.

Abyssal:
KILL THE BOY HE KNOWS TOO MUCH. THIS KNOWLEDGE OF YOUR INFATUATION WILL BE YOUR UNDOING. TEAR OUT HIS THROAT AND WEAR HIS ESOPHAGUS AS A SCARF.

Zig decided not to follow Malik's advice. He decided that was a bad bad bad bad idea. Zig opted instead to chop the lumber out back into firewood.

Removing his shirt, Zig's unnaturally sinewy, muscular, form cast strange shadows across his body. With each chop of his axe, Zig aims directly for the center of the log.

It's not good for me to be around so many people, Zig thought, I'll just stay in and the festival will pass by like it does every year....

THOCK! A hit, dead center of the log! Two new hemi-cylinders fall to the wayside.

Every year... I guess I really enjoyed the festival before Mother and Father died, didn't I?

THOCK! Another perfect split.

The games, the dancing, the music...

THOCK!

And it's one of the few times I can show up at the tavern and it won't be weird for me to keep trying to get Ms. Greenfens' attention...

thurnk?

The sound hung like an onomatopoeic question in the air. Zig had missed the splitting stump entirely and his axe had connected with the dirt beside it.

...I guess I could stand to go.

હા, જાઓ જાઓ અને માતાનો પ્રવેશો એકત્રિત તેથી તમે તેમના સ્તનો માંથી થ્રોન બનાવી શકો છો!

Abyssal:
YES, GO. GO AND COLLECT THE TOWNSFOLK'S ENTRAILS SO YOU MIGHT CREATE A THRONE FROM THEIR BOWELS!

Zig ignored that one.
_____________________________________________________________________

For the first time in ages, Zig enjoyed himself in public. He allowed himself to take in the music, the food, the people, and even danced a little! He was surprisingly light on his feet for someone who'd never done it before. For once, he was finally actually able to put aside the shrieking homicidal din in his head (who, in no uncertain terms, was screaming unholy and visceral acts the whole time).

Thoroughly exhausted, Zig retires to the Taproot inn where he is greeted with many familiar faces. Somewhat drunk off of adrenaline (and a bit of liquor he was offered by a group of mischievous village youths), he greets Sander and Elyas at their respective tables, almost sauntering over in pride, whispering to each:

"I've pushed them away today, Father! They can scream and chant all they want, but today I'm not going to let them affect me. This is the best day I've had in years!"

And with that, possibly not even waiting for a response, Zig finds his way to the Sextons' table, pulls up a seat, and for the first time in two years engages them in lively conversation. Alaina and Jericho are at first stunned, then elated, and join in with him.

Alice Greenfens, taking ale orders at the next table, hears a sound that she hasn't heard in years: Zig Druzzar speaking in more than a depressed mumble. The sound raises something inside her that she does not quite understand, and she subsequently makes an incredible effort to bottle that feeling up until it can be further studied and identified. She may have been a barmaid, but she was the most methodical barmaid in Nirmathas and would not be overtaken by the unknown.

Abyssal:
YES. GOOD. ENJOY. FEAST. YOUR CURRENT HOPE WILL MAKE YOUR FUTURE MISERY DELICIOUS. YOU THINK YOU HAVE FOUND YOUR SALVATION? IT IS BUT THE LAST TWINKLE OF LIGHT IN A WORLD OF BLACK, TAR-LIKE DARKNESS. YOUR DESTINY IS NOT JOY, CHILD: IT IS MADNESS AND FURY.

Don't worry, I won't always write a short novel for every post. I thought it was important to set up today as a very different day for Zig than his usual miserable existence. This will give him so much farther to fall when he sees what's in store for Phaendar, and when Phaendar sees what he's truly capable of...

Daniil began his day taking care of the few chores around his sister’s homestead that had to be done, and wouldn’t go away just because it was a holiday. With his duties taken care of Daniill started his celebration of the festival by spending time in quiet reflection at the Shrine with Father Shamus. Before he left he reminded the old man, ”Make sure you come see me in the archery competition.”

The bowman spent the rest day in the company of his fiends partaking of all the festival had to offer. A little footsore and parched he retired to the tavern for a cool drink and fellowship, hoping to find his friend Cob there.

You can place him anywhere in the tavern.

@Zig:
Personally I thought that was excellent for setting up a character.

Elyas isn't much for festivities, but he feels that it is important to be seen at a public gathering, and to use the festival as an opportunity to rub shoulders with as many of the townsfolk as possible.

This is a rare day that he actually wears his full vestments. A white outfit with a red cape isn't very practical for your everyday homestead living. He even strapped on his ornate longsword, which hasn't been out of it's case since the last big festival.

He spends most of the morning wandering around the festival, talking to different vendors and joining any conversation circle he finds. He isn't really seeking anyone in particular out, just being seen and getting a feel for the pulse of the town.

As the day goes on, he works his way over to the Taproot and finds a quiet spot, being quite tired of chatter. He is joined by his best friend Corin, who complains loudly about not being allowed by the council to set up a card game/gambling table at the festival. Elyas just listens, letting his friend do all the talking, while looking around the inn at the others who have filtered in.

Updated the campaign tab with a list of languages to use when positing as something other than common.

@Zig can you tell me what language you are using for Abyssal as I like it more than the one I have. Also, I think I am going to enjoy opening the spoilers to see what your inner demons are saying.

Also updated the calendar link with the current days weather. Food, water, and a day to day activity log will also be on there once they become relevant.

I am working on the first gameplay post now. Should be done soon.

EDIT - Will also note for Daniil that COb was unfortunately unavailable and had to stay in the Market Green. And for Elyas, after enjoying Corin's company for a while he mentions he needs to be going back to the Phaendar Trading Company to check on some things.

First post is up, hope it isn't too slow. Some APs have a bit of a preamble before the action...

Yeah, I can see this is going to take awhile before the action starts ;)

Were playing PbP slow is not a problem I would guess. It gives us time for collective storytelling.

Links all seem to work fine.

It's Gujarati in Google Translate! Also note that some words just don't translate into that language. Sometimes I find a synonym that works, other times I just delete it and pretend the Gujarati still includes it because it's not a word-for-word translation anyway.

GM - since we're jumping into this right away, I think it's worth bringing up: How do you want to organize combat?

Obviously the problem with combat in PBP is balancing time vs. organization. Are we going to be posting our actions in initiative order, or are we going to be posting in any order, and then you recap?

If I can be so bold as to give a recommendation:

I use the header to track initiative, with big bold You are up! signs to show when it is somebody's turn. Like this:

1. The Monsters
2. The Paladin
3. The Ranger
4. The Hapless NPCs
5. The Bard <--- You are up!
6. The Wizard <--- You are up!

I find it makes the order very clear, the gameplay thread very organized, and it keeps everyone on the same page a la what's happening right now.

We're still waiting for the first turn Hobgoblin actions, right?

I believe so.

LOL I did not see them GM post before I wrote my response. Hi-larious.

@Zig:
Wow!

@Ian:
I think the turn order he listed was pretty good. What is bold is up to post. What isn't bold is waiting on the Hobs.

Going to post in about 4-5 hours, running a game irl. Today did not go as expected sorry for being late.
